Good question.  Maybe photography and/or building models of sailing ships.  More likely, however, would be wasting time playing video games.

That's a most scary question for me to come to face with.

So many things in my life revolve around trains. ha.

3 of my past jobs were on the railroad, since age 1, I always had trains for Christmas, I basically walk, eat, sleep, think, imagine trains 24/7.

What's wrong with meeee? ha. Thanx Thom...

Well now, such a deep subject for such a shallow mind as I.

I gave up high school track after breaking my ankle.

I gave up college when I graduated.

I gave up the NMRA after they disqualified me from an entry calling me a professional.

I gave up my first marriage when the wife ran off with someone else in the church. I then gave up church!

I gave up Law Enforcement after retiring.

I gave up the ocean after sharks starting biting people in the water.

I gave up water skiing after alligators starting biting people.

I gave up Softball at the age of 46.

I gave up Golf soon after my two shoulder surgeries and a constant sore back.

I gave up Bowling at age 70.

I gave up my prostate after getting prostate cancer. :'(

All during those trying times, I never gave up railroad modeling.

But to really answer the question, if not trains, I would be building models of some sort. Matters not what, I just love working and building models.

I like building things that ultimately move, so if not trains, I'd most likely still be flying R/C airplanes, or wrenching on cars (more than to just keep my old clunker running).

Love the question. Can't stop laughing after reading Tom's reply. Like Bob Parrish, my father bought me a train at a very early age, about  two. Its the only train I no longer have because I took it apart at the age of 4. My bad. Additionally my neighbor was Grif Teller, famous artist that painted many of the Pennsylvania Railroad calendars. I also lived four house from the Erie railroad, and as a little kid, was mesmerized by the sound, smoke and smell of a steam engine.

I tired model boats, airplanes and duco cement ( smelled great ), but they did not stick. After 75 plus years, I still love playing with trains. I do have another interest that comes and goes. I love painting with watercolors. I still dabble with them from time to time. I have a file of photographs that I would love to paint. Ted Rose was my hero. He could paint steel like no one else.  Perhaps after I finish this layout, or not.

I agree, I love Tom's reply. My nephew delivered a kit of mine to Tom. He commented for days how nice Tom was to him. I have not had the pleasure of meeting Tom, but I agree he is a good man. A damn good man.
After not building kits for 35 years, I started again a little over a year ago. I felt my depression was at a point were I could enjoy the hobby again. Also like Tom at 74, running my business keeps me very busy, and my baseball, golf and strength training, are done. I do a lot of stationary bike riding, some gym (at my home) work, and swimming.
The joy I get would hard to replace. Modeling while listening to music is very relaxing. I need a clear mind to do it. This is often a difficult task for me. I am basically happy or pissed off. Very little time in between.
I would also miss the camaraderie among forum members. If I didn't do it I would read more, go to more concerts, wrestling matches and the beach.
Oh by the way great question.
My I add, has anyone read the book My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent?
May all Florida residents be safe for the next two weeks. I live in Lithia, Florida. It's already getting crazy.

I'd be doing more hiking and bicycling, my house and farm would be neater and better maintained, I might even have found time to re-finish some of my old farm equipment.  But I probably wouldn't have as good manual and electrical skills; I developed most of them working on models and layouts.  And I don't think  removing railroads from my life would have done much to improve either of my marriages, and I wouldn't be as well equipped to invest in RRs.
