Title: Barnstead Lumber Scratch build
Post by: fsmcollector67 on October 11, 2017, 02:02:04 PM
So the last two mystery builds, someone guessed it in under an hour. I put up pics of the cut walls, and could not stump you all. This time I have made a copy of one of the doors used in the kit. I am hoping this might take a little longer. I used the old school method of stacking the layers of wood to build this. (been reading some old 50's MR lately, and this was the only way they knew how to do it). Let the guessing begin........

I think Tommy has one on his workbench. ;)  Some of the techniques from the 50's really do look good.

John,
So that might explain it. I just thought some modelers have every aspect of kits cataloged in their heads....It is amazing some of the techniques that back in the 40s-60s what modelers did to create what we sometimes take for simple today.

Howdy All,
Been busy replicating doors for the build. Decided to get them all built at once this time, to get it out of the way. I have all of the walls cut, and started to color them last night. I am also playing around with coloring the stone foundation, as you can see in the last pic. Thanks for taking a look...be back soon....
Loren...

Just realized a day later I never put nail holes in the freight door on the right....OOPS!

Okay all, back to building stuff. Here is the progress that I got to in the last couple of days. The main building with the exception of the roofs, and front office door is done. I have to try to print something up for the office door. The last photo is of a test I did using some acrylic inks I came across the other day at Jerry's Artarama. They look to have some promise on color variations. This sample has raw umber, and burnt umber applied to it. Thanks for taking a look...
Loren...
The first picture came out really weird, looks like the building is sinking?

Bob,
Thanks so much. If only I could take better pictures, with the right lighting, it would look even better. The Bar I believe was a piece of 1/32, or 3/64 sq basswood. The clamps are from .002 brass just bent as close to size as I could get. I painted grimy black, and used my homemade rust wash on the clamps. I try to make due with whatever is at hand.

Afternoon all,
I finished up the warehouse last night. With the exception of the windows, chimneys, lamp shades, and cornice at the roof peak (copied from original casting), all is scratch built. The decorative lamp bracket was pretty easy to make from brass wire. The hoist is wood, with a brass bracket, and small slice of tubing, with brass spokes for the wheel. The biggest challenge was carving the corner support post. (took two tries). I weathered the shingles a little different this time. I used several different raw umber, and raw sienna Rembrandt chalks mixed in water, and applied as washes. Than finished up with Bragdons straight chalk. Now on to the storage shed....Thanks for taking a look.....

Mark,
I still have the lumber storage shed for this to finish up.......I was leaning towards a mill that I have pictures of from on line, which is unique that it has stamped pattern metal siding. I was trying to devise a way to replicate this. I have a plan on possibly how to do it, but just need to do all the drawings for it.  At this point not sure. I always say that I am going to take a break, but the next day I am bored, and come up with something else to build.  Time will tell.....

The Storage shed is in the works, just need to do roof, and catwalks......Those Acrylic inks that I bought a couple weeks ago, came in handy. Used them to put a little color back into a few of the boards... should be done in a couple of days....Thanks for taking a look... The boards are a much more gray look to them, but that is just my terrible lighting for the pictures...

Dave,
They are Liquitex Acrylic inks. (Raw Umber, and Burnt Umber) I diluted them just like india ink, in alcohol. I used about the same most commonly used dilution rate of about 2oz of alcohol, with about 50 drops of ink. They are light at this point, and I brushed on two, or three times for some. I also used a Raw Sienna Rembrandt chalk, mixed with a little alcohol, for a couple here, and there. Thanks for the comment...

I finally finished up the storage shed, and machine shop. Seems like this almost took longer to build than the whole warehouse. I tried to be faithful to George's build, and get the board by board as close to his as possible.  Anyways, onto the cutting shed, and fence, and then she's done....Thanks for taking a look...

I managed to finish up the frame work for the wood cutting shed. I used a little different method this time for the siding. I started with the driftwood pickling was, than a light coat of the barn wood gray. I then, in spots streaked on some dark gray chalk. I did a light black wash. Then I did a heavy highlight of normal driftwood. Finally I add the various browns in. I have to order some corrugated roofing, to finish it up. The saw, and work bench I copied from the originals. Thanks for taking a look.....and A Happy Thanksgiving to All...
