Hey Guys:
Here's the next kit on my list to build. Sierra West's Loco & Service Shopsd;
Karl
Karl,
I'm in of course.
Tom ;D
Hey Tom And Bruce:
Thanks for following along.
Karl
Hi All:
Started working on the laser cut framing walls. I did this by the instructions and want to know how you think it looks.
Wall is coated with clear alcohol and then brushed with chalk powders. I used light brown and rust colored chalk powder.
Let me know what you think.
Karl
Karl nice. That is great coloring.
Whose chalks did you use??
Jerry
I think the color looks great so far.
You'll have plenty of opportunity to experiment since this kit has like 2 lbs of strip wood lol.
Hey Jerry & Paintrain:
Thanks guys. Chalks are Bragoen Enterprises.
Karl
Hey All:
Got some more walls done. I didn't think I was going to like this but it is a pretty coll way to color the walls.
Here's another pic.
Karl
Walls look terrific, Karl.
Cheers, Mark.
Cool looking walls Karl
Jim
I'll be following and great looking walls.
I need to add this one to my stash before Brett quits production of the kit. I'll be looking to this build Karl. ;)
Karl
I'm following along, too. The wall coloring looks good - the big issue with this coloring technique is not getting things too dark.
Karl, what's the plan for floors in the shops? That's something I kinda agonized over in my roundhouse, and wasn't quite happy with my final solution there.
dave
Karl,
I look forward to seeing your progress on this kit.
I have seen other versions and think your version will turn out great, as usual.
Sort of curious to see how long it takes as well.
Have fun.
Darryl
Hey Mark, Jim, Curt, Greg & John S:
Hey Guys thank for the great compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Dave:
Not sure about the floor. I will check the directions and see what I can tell you.
Karl
Hey Darryl:
thanks for following along. We shall see how long it takes.
Karl
Dave:
The floor is a wood plank floor. Says stain with black alcohol stain and then color with #408.5 Raw Umber chalk p[owder and rubbing alcohol.
Karl
Karl, thanks! dave
Cool looking kit. Your beginning work is looking real good, Karl.
George
Hey Dave:
You are quite welcome.
Karl
Hey George:
thanks appreciate your compliment.
Karl
Karl,
The framed walls look great, nice technique. Is this something new you tried or something SW came up with, just curious. Either way, you did a great job on them.
Tom ;D
Hey Tom:
Thanks and its by the instructions.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Need an opinion on this. This if peeling paint. What color looks best?
Left to right over Black A&I wasH:
All Floquil Colors--- Antique White, Reefer White and Zinc Chromate Primer.
Thanks for your input.
Karl
For an utility structure, the red on the right looks best. Save that weathered blue color for an old house. (Blue pigment wasn't cheap, so it would be unlikely on a railroad/logging structure.)
dave
Hey Dave:
Thanks for the reply. That is not actually blue it Antique white. I sent the picture to my friend I'm building it for. I will let him make the choice. Also said he could do just A&I wash. No peeling paint.
Karl
That middle one looks good for an exterior. Looks like a sun bleached version of the left most paint job.
They all look good in close-up. I like the middle sample most, but of course it's up to your friend.
--George
I like the middle one best.
Hi Karl,
Just catching up on this. I got this kit from Brett just before Turkey Day - I haven't even had a chance to crack open the box with all the holiday craziness - but will certainly be following along with your progress.
Marty
Karl I like the red to.
Marty will be interesting to see what you do with this kit.
Jerry
Hey Jerry:
I'm going with the white as that is what my friend chose as first choice.
karl
Hi Guys:
Thanks for all the input. My friend chose Reefer White as his first choice.
Karl
Hey guys:
Ok here are a couple of photos. One is from the instructions with peeling white paint. The other is what I did with the model. Tried to copy what Brett did.
Karl
That came out very nicely, Karl.
Cheers, Mark.
Great job Karl.
Looks great. I like the white as well.
That looks a lot more "white" than the sample. Definitely well weathered!
dave
Looking good!
Hey Mark, Curt, Marty, Dave & Cuse:
Wow Guys thanks for all the great compliments. Much appreciated. Glad to have you all along for this one. It's gonna take A while.
Thanks Karl

Karl
Hi All:
Got the left wall finished today. It took me about 2 days to finish it. It was kinda warped. I straightened it out by adding A 1/16th X 1/16 piece of wood top and bottom on on the top and bottom stud. Hope it looks OK. I painted my windows to mach the walls. Instructions call for gray on the outside. I used Earth. Actually Krylon Camouflage Tan.
Karl
Shaping up nicely Karl.....
Hey Greg:
Thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Hi guys:
Sorry haven't posted any photos lately but I'm just building more walls. Maybe I'll post something tomorrow.

Jerry
Hey Jerry:
thanks buddy very much appreciated.
Karl
Karl
Looking great!
Thanks for sharing your build, Karl.
The more I build these kits the more I want to make them look like the landscape I see daily in my part of the country. It's funny how wood and metal weather differently in different areas of the country. Out here where I live metal roofs end up rusting a deep burgundy. You hardly ever see that in craftsman kit pilot models.
Anyway, your model will turn out fantastic, Karl.
Jaime
Nice work on the walls, Karl.
--Opa George
Hey John:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Jaime:
Thanks for the great reply. I have to say I've never seen a roof rust A deep burgundy. Feel free to post a pic of one here if you want. Would love to see how it looks.
Karl
Hey Opa George:
Thanks for the compliment. Glad you like how they turned out.
Karl
Hi All:
Finished the doors on one of the side walls. here's a Photo.
Karl
Hey All:
Been working on the engine house doors today. Quite A job. All separate boards.
Karl
Hi All:
Got the doors done for the side shop done. All separate boards stained with A&I the each board is dry-brushed with peeling white paint. Hinges are laser cut and are rather fragile. So they take A little time to install.
On to the Loco Shop Doors.
Karl
Karl, fantastic job. The wood grain is very nicely done--I think I see some knotholes and everything. The peeling paint look is very effective. The old strap hinges look authentic.
--Opa George
Hey Opa George:
Thanks much for the compliments much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
All the doors are finished up. Been suffering with A cold so laid up for a few days. Here's a picture of both sets of doors. These are also board by board and take A little time to assemble. On to the inside wall.
Karl
Doors look good.
Hey Curt:
thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:

Hope your cold is better.
--Opa George
Hey George:
thanks buddy much appreciated. The cold is still hanging on.
Karl
Hi All:
Finished the floor today Here's a few pics. Any word on fixing the original opening page? The floor is not glued down. It is assembled with 3M double faced adhesive tape. I also added a piece of card stock uder the template to stiffen it. I will also not be adding it to the diorama base. All the rest of the Sierra west kits I assembled are just loose so we can install them on the layout as we wish.
Karl
Very impressive work. Very impressive.
As usual you are building a great structure, is it talent or lots of practice or a little bit of both.
Nice work Karl.
Hey Janbouli:
Thanks for the great compliment. Yeah I guess it's A little of both.

Hey Jim:
Thanks buddy much appreciated. Got the drive belt system done for the lathe today. heres A photo.
Karl
What are you using for belting? Any suggestions on how to hook up the belts to the pulleys??
dave
Hi Dave:
Bret provide a piece of some type of paper to use for the belt. You cut it to the width of the wheel on the shaft. I used Aleen's Tacky Glue on the belt. It worked quite well. Tried Elmers first and didn't for this application.
Karl
Hi All:
Rafter tails have been added. On to the roof.
