I've put the building together with tape to get an idea of size (overall) and whether I leave it as it was designed or do some bashing with it. I think its just about time for a new cutting matte, this won is getting pretty bad.

In these shots I've measured and cut out my base and started to play with the positioning of how I want this to look. This also gives me the chance to sit and ponder whether I need to make some new walls etc based on how I've set it up. I like to do this early in the build process. Once I decide on how I want to lay it out and what else I need to build, change etc, I start the bracing process... Currently have cleaned and prepped the windows and castings for primer. More pics later. Hope you all dont mind but I take lots of pics and will share lots with everyone.   Its time to get things underway. Thanx for looking

Pretty Hum Drum stuff here, got the windows and casting in primer. Although this kit supplies a good assortment of castings, I found they were very poorly done, I spent close to 90 minutes cleaning them to the point I could spray them, Ive never built a JL kit before so not sure if its normal, Also had a few broken pieces of wood, maybe I just got a bad kit. Other than this, I really like it so far.  You will see that I went overkill with the bracing so far, this kit uses a different type of wood than Ive used before, calls for very little bracing.. thought this was strange so did some tests... it warps very quick and and VERY bad... maybe its just me but you can never use too much.

I really like it as well the more I do ... I had ordered another kit to do for the contest but its still on route to me. I have to admit the one thing that somewhat bothers me is I think they went overkill with the signage (too much all in one place) Ive sorted that to my satisfaction by breaking the layout of the 2 buildings. and have laid it out in an L shape, not sure how Im going to finish the area in between yet. You can see in a previous pic, I have a piece of card stock placed, Im leaning to putting a squared building there or perhaps a fenced in area for cars, trucks or junk... By splitting it up, it leaves more area visible so Im playing with doing a crackle finish in certain area's This is what the pics show, playing with the colors under as well how thick a topcoat to get the look Im after. I think  a bit here and there will just add a little something to it. Feedback here would be welcome if anyone has worked with a crackle medium.  Thanx all. The picture with the arrows shows both 1 coat of white and 2 coats of white.

Thanks... Well some more pics of today's work, not very exciting yet. Had some areas to fix that were broken when I opened the kit. Airbrushed the windows and door trim, all I had on hand was a gloss green so I went with it, Ive since sprayed with Krylon Matt Finish to give me the look I was after. Got the 1st coat of AI wash on,  Also got the 1st coat of base white so tonight's task will be to do some crackle medium, add some signage and paint techniques... thats the plan anyhow. We will see.

Hello all... been a few dayz since my last post, got a dumping of snow in the land of igloos. Was left with no power, internet or heat for a few dayz so haven't really progressed much. Managed to find a battery lantern for some light so did a small amount. Started to put the 1st coat on some of the casting. Didn't think I was doing a bad job until I took a few pictures. No worries lots of time to fix them up. Also got the basic structure put together for the covered gas-up area. Although it may look a bit out of proportion in the pics, it has just the rite amount of space for 2 vehicles between the pumps and the building. I think once  painted it will blend much better. Hope to make some substantial progress soon.

Thank you David,

I have to admit my favorite as well. Been about a week since my last post. Some update shots to view. I left off with the casting, Ive since cleaned, a coat of primer (automotive) and painted most with a 1st coat. They still need to be weathered to bring out the detail. Ive also started to build the sign posts for the main garage. I found that these were extremely flimsy so I had some left over thin strip-wood from a few other builds so I doubled the thickness. I personally feel this had to be done for obvious reasons. I still have 3 more various shape and size posts to do. One thing for sure about this kit is there is a lot of signs and options for them.

Over the last week I decided to do something Ive yet to do in this scale... Detailing the inside of a building. I did this quite often when I was building in G Scale. Not sure if I felt I wasn't capable of doing a good job or not but looking at it sitting on the work bench I figured there was no time like the present to jump in and give it a shot. I went to the local hobby shop and picked up some 1/32 x 4 x 24 basswood. As you can see I went with a checkerboard floor. Yes its bright and you might think Im crazy but just wait it is coming together nicely (those pics will be posted hopefully in the next few days) To do this it was just as easy as finding the pattern on the interweb and print to scale, glued and weighted it down until dry. Because this stock is so thin and I didn't want to double up the floor or the walls, I had to add a lot of extra bracing. I didn't like the look of it doubled. I figured by adding the extra braces, it would make this building really strong.

By putting the extra bracing in, its given me the surface to glue the walls to. Ive also added a wall to separate the now 2 area's. The front area could be used for either a customer area or possibly a "Get your groceries here" undecided at this point.

The smaller building is coming along, Im going to be adding the extra bracing as well hopefully tonight or tomorrow to do the same for the walls and floor. What I have managed to do is build a small overhang for the front area for possibly some kind of signage. Here are the beginning pics of this. Im close to the finish of this small add on, will post more pics on my next post.

Ive done more to both buildings but been lazy in transferring the pics to my computer. I hope you enjoy what Ive done so far and can see where its going. Thanx for viewing.

A few Random items Im working on,  A car lift, used a few pieces of scrap, and a lid from a Krazy Glue tube. You will see 4 lil tables, these were from Interaction Hobbies, Im going to make them into work benches and a counter for the front area. Wish me luck there... very tiny. Also shown in one of the pics is a chair, I have quite a few of these to make, dont know where I will use them but will find a place. And finally added a base to one of the sign posts Im working on, hopefully it shows in the picture, you can see a black line both vertical and horizontal, this was the original thickness of the post, this is why I needed to add the extra strips.   Enjoy the pics everyone and Happy Building.   Ken (aka Hellocharlee)

Hello everyone,

Since my last post Ive managed to get very little done (Flu Bug). Ive been working on making some progress with the signs. Im almost finished getting a few done. Im trying to get them to look as though they've hanging for yrs. Not quite there yet.  A few pictures below. Some of the extra Items I ordered to go with this build have started to arrive, it would have been easier to buy die-cast but I figured since this was a build contest, I would build all my cars and trucks.. not to say I wont use pre-built items. I do have a few I will use to enhance the finished build.

A few shots of the chain link fencing. Ive had this kit for close to a yr, I thought this would be the perfect build to use it with. So far its been pretty easy to put together. Ive decided to mount it into some strip wood to replicate a cement foundation. I think once all put together and painted it should be a good fit for the scene.

As you saw in a previous post I started to detail the inside of the larger building which meant I had to do the smaller as well. As before, I added the extra bracing and put the wall skins on. Pretty boring stuff so no need to show that again. What you are seeing below is a Heavy duty truck hoist (or lift) This took maybe 30 minutes to put together. I just have to put on something that would represent a control panel and some wires. Overall once put in place and add some garage items it will fit in just right. '

More posts and pics to come soon. Thanx for looking.

This is a neat build, love the two lifts and might have to make one or both for the empire. Thanks for sharing!

David, Bob.... Thanx very much for the words of encouragement. To be honest I was feeling pretty low in the confidence dept knowing Im going up against some Master Builders. Win loose or draw, Im really enjoying this contest. Im pushing myself to try things Ive seen from other builders but never thought I could do. I will be posting some pics of those later tonight.

Thanx again for the kind words.

Bout time I added some recent pics, decided to make some changes that I mentioned in my last post. Ive seen this plaster effect done on a few builds in the past and always liked it. It was one I searched for a way to do it but couldn't find a tutorial. I figured I would just jump in and give it a try. Now that I have some paint on it (shown in other posts) I personally like the way its coming together. My technique will only improve on future builds.  Enjoy. Ken

Ive also changed the fence since my last set of posts last week, What Im using now I feel is a much better fit, this grouping of pics was taken a few days back so they dont yet show the finished look. Will get some recent overall shots soon... times running out so have to speed things up. Im still in the put it here and put it there stage of this. I feel  like it will  never get done.

A few exterior shots of the main building.  I realized I cut the sign slightly crooked after I glued it in.. jumps out at you in the pictures but not so bad. I  came up with an easy fix for that that actually improves the look of the sign. Thats pretty much where Im at, I have quite a few almost finished items to add so it will start to look more finished this weekend, (I hope). Pretty sure of that actually. Hope you enjoy the progress so far. Enjoy everyone.

Ken... More pics soon.

Ken,

Beautiful job on the model and the details are fantastic. I agree with
Bob in that it seems to be the case of "can you top this"?

Well done.
