Hello everyone,
My next kit in line to be built is FSM Chippy Hollow Hardware Co.
I figure most everyone knows this kit but here is a photo of the box.
Lots of lead castings in this box. Most of the work with this kit will be painting all of them.
This is all the wood included with the kit.
Primed and sorted the castings that mostly represent wood. I used Rust-Oleum Khaki for these.
Anything that represents metal is blackened with Jax Pewter Black.
I primed the walls with gray auto primer.
Next I washed the walls with A&I.
I wanted some variation in the different stones but still keep is subtle so I used alcohol and powdered Rembrandt chalks to color some of the stones. The colored the walls with A&I before this so it didn't wash away all the chalk. The A&I really helps create some depth between the stones.
I used a thin brush to wick some A&I between the stones to give some shadow to them.
I dry brushed the walls with a very light tan color.
I liked the Floquil Depot Buff color for the windows but I substituted it for Apple Barrel Khaki.
2 washes of A&I really helped tone the trim down a bit.
The kit calls for gluing these wooden spacers to the bottle of the cast walls. I primed them with gray just incase they were visible somehow but I don't believe it is necessary.
I started working on the windows and doors. Still need some work before I installed them.
I'm jumping around a bit with this kit while I wait for things to dry. While the epoxy was drying between the walls and the wood filler pieces I painted some of the castings. I'm a big fan of these fuel canister castings. I haven't seen these in one of George's kits before. I use double sided tape and a tongue depressor to hold the castings while I paint them. For metal castings the 3M double sided tape from Staples or Walmart won't hold them so I use carpet tape from Home Depot.
Thanks for following along.
Does anyone have any photos of Brian Nolan's build of this kit? I remember seeing his years ago but when I google it I only find a thread on the railroad-line forum and the photos are super small.
Off to a great start Steve, I'll be following.
I just picked up a Chippy Hollow wall & windows set from Jimmy at a local MRR show. So I'm following... might pick up a thing or two. ;)
--Rich
Steve
You are off to a great start. I will be following along.
Looking good, Steve.
Cheers, Mark.
Steve, I am happily following along. Those masonry wall castings turned out great. Very effective technique. Thanks for that.
--George
The stone work looks awesome.
Thanks everyone. Glad to have you following along.
Rich, It's great that Jimmy has these castings for sale. I haven't seen them up close but the photos look like they are very crisp and clean. I built a few of his hydrocal kits and the castings were very crisp and clean so I'd expect the same from the FSM details. Tons of great structures can be built around these wall castings. I've been thinking about buying his Sewall Foundry set for a project I'm thinking of. I really like the fact that they have very low lead content also. I have 2 young kids and a baby so I really have to be careful working with these older kits. I always change my clothes and take a shower after working with them.
Nice start Steve. Really like the coloring on the walls.
Jerry
Hey Steve:
looking great so far. I really like what you have done with the stone work I'm following along.
Karl
Steve,
I agree, great start. I'm following along as well.
Tom ;D
Neat kit.....I'll be looking in Steve. :)
Very impressive modelwork. I think you have another winner on your hands.
Btw, the layout looks amazing.
Thanks everyone.
I made a little more progress on the stone walls over the last few days.
The wooden pieces glued to the top and the bottom of the walls interfere with the other walls they are glued to so I used a razor saw to notch them.
I was having some trouble getting a clean cut with the razor saw so I just hacked this out with a X-acto chisel blade.
I mocked the corners together to make sure I had a tight fit.
I started adding the windows and doors to the walls.
I glued the walls together using 2 part epoxy. George recommends adding the open windows and the little smokestack before assembling the walls but I prefer to do it after. Less chance of knocking them off during the gluing and clamping.
While the walls were drying I colored up a few crates. If I paint 6-12 castings every time I'm waiting for something to dry I should have most of them done when it comes time to start detailing.
Thanks for following along.
The walls are looking great!
Hey Steve:
All I can say is WOW. The stonework is just gorgeous.
Karl
Steve,
As always, outstanding work.....
Loren...
Very nice!
Jaime
Colours look fantastic, Steve.
Cheers, Mark.
Thanks for all the positive feedback everyone. I apologize for taking long to reply to the thread. Sometimes I try to reply on my phone and it gives me the database error and I forget to try again later.
I've had trouble finding time to work on anything lately with the holidays and the new baby in the house. I wanted to wait till I had some more progress to update the thread.
In preparation for installing the roof card I added the cross support. Lots of heavy lead pieces glued to the cardboard so it's important to keep the roof from sagging.
The roof card is glued in place. I'm doing individual shingles so I didn't shingle the roof card first.
These 2 pieces will be the base for the lower gable detail.
Here they are glued together.
I made one for the other side and cut them both with a miter box and little hand saw to match the profile of the roof.
Next step is gluing the pieces that go vertically up the bottom of the roof. I used a miter box and a small handsaw to cut these as well.
I added all the roof details before shingling the roof. I prefer to do it this way if I'm using individual shingles. All the chimneys are drilled and I insert half toothpicks in them. I can then just poke a hole in the roof, slide the toothpick in the hole and I don't have to worry about the chimney moving while it's drying.
I started shingling the roof. Its a little hard to see but I use a piece of scale 1x3 or 1x4 before the first row to bring the first row of shingles up a bit and simulate a starter row. I'm using cedar sheets from Sierra Scale Models. I cut them into strips and then just chop random shingles out of the strips.
Moving along..
I do about 1 inch at a time and then alternate between the next row and 2 rows on the other side. This way I don't mess up what I've already done.
I added a little piece of patch corrugated metal just to give it a little more character.
Almost done..
I ran a piece of scale 2x2 across the ridge to give the ridge shingles some support and something to glue to.
I finished the ridge cap shingles.
Thanks for following along everyone. Hopefully I'll get a few chunks of time to work on it in the next couple days.
Very nice work Steve.
Looks great, Steve.
Really nice work.
Cheers, Mark.
Wow, fantastic work. I have a huge amount of respect for anyone who applies individual HO scale shingles.

Yes indeed , I wouldn't even think about such tedious work, great job.
Steve,
The stone work is top notch as always....
Loren...
Excellent work on the wood shingles, especially the ridge shingles, Steve..... 8)
Thanks everyone!
Next step I installed the cupola roof card.
Installing the shingles..
I made a copy of the roof card, cut out the the top portion and will use it as a cap under the finial. This is just the test fit.
First coat of color is on the shingles. I used a thinned out wash of Apple Barrel Pavement to start.
Next I washed over the shingles with a light gray thinned out heavily.
I washed over everything with A&I to darken it a bit.
I drybrushed the roof with linen colored paint. You can see the right has some highlights and the left isn't touched yet.
I brushed some chalks across the roof to add a little more color.
I drybrushed the roof again to bring everything together and blend it a bit.
Thanks for following along. I'm going to be building the little brick extension building next.
Steve that is one beautiful looking roof. Great job.
Jerry
Wonderful job on the roof. One of the nicest I've seen.
--Opa George
Well done Steve.
Great looking roof. I don't think I'd have the patience to do individual shingles, but it's a nice effect.
Jeff
Great looking roof Steve.
Steve,
Great roof work. Isn't it fun doing them shingle by shingle? The cedar ones also smell real good....
Loren....
Hey Steve:
All I can say is WOW!!!!!! beautiful job on the stonework. Love the roof and it's details also.
Karl
Fantastic looking shingles and the roof details are great.
Steve
Great workmanship! Great looking build! Love it.
Thanks everyone.
I jumped ahead and started working on the small brick building to the left of the front. The instructions have this assembled after the main building and the loading docks but I thought I could get a better feel for the diorama spacing if I put it together first.
I primed everything with earth. I think black would've been fine too. The 2 small walls are part of the loading dock.
First coat was Apple Barrel Barn Red followed by a wash of A&I to tone it down.
I painted a few bricks with dark gray,
(https://craftsmanstructures.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_2588-e1580918328846.jpeg)
Next I use some thinned out off-white or light gray and just touch it to a crack so it wicks into all the stones.
I painted all the little details and installed the doors and windows. The walls also go another A&I wash plus some drybrushing. Then I glued all 3 walls together.
As much as I tried I found it difficult to get a really tight corner joint. The lead walls and just too flexible. I'll have to disguise this with vines.
This is how it looks next to the main building.
The kit included these gutters. They are U channel type wood. George recommended just staining them with A&I but I felt like they are a little large and a touch out of scale but I like the detail so I painted them flat gray to tone them down a bit. Plus I've never seen wood gutters before.. Maybe this was common in the past and they all rotten away and were replaced with aluminum?
I made the base for the diorama. George recommended 9x18 but I made mine 9x24. I plan on adding a building or shed to the left of the building.
I glued the main building to the base.
Thanks for following along. I already started staining the wood for the decking. That's going to be the next step. Plus a few smaller details on the main building.
Great looking build.
Steve, fantastic job so far. The small brick building has tons of character. On the gutters, I use U-channel wood on all my builds to represent gutters, with piano wire downspouts. I paint all a rusty blackish gray to represent old metal. The old gutters were usually half-round metal, but I find the u-channels do a nice job representing this most common detail even if not the most accurate look. I think our "mind's eye" accepts it.
Really, really nice build. -- Opa George
Super looking build so far Steve! ;)
Hey Steve:
WOW!!!! you are doing the coolest job on this kit. It's one I always loved but do not have one. Love you stone & brick work.
Karl
Great modeling work Steve! I'm learning a lot from this build on painting these wall castings, thank you. I almost picked this kit up at Springfield but got Sewall's Foundry instead.
Thanks for the positive feedback everyone!
George, after I colored and weathered them up a bit they grew on me and I like them now. Do your get your wood for the gutters from Northeastern?
Bob, I'm glad I could give you some ideas of at least how I color them. Pretty simple and easy. I just try to keep everything subtle. I'd like the build Sewall's and the price has come down considerably. I've also thought about buying some of Jimmy's castings for Sewall's and doing something different with them.
Small update today...
Since the main building is glued down I added the finial to the top of the cupola. I sprayed the piece of paper cap I made earlier with flat black, blackened the metal finial piece and colored it with a little green mixed with white. I weathered it with some A&I and drybrushing. Even if I'm careful I'll break this off at least 2-3 times before I'm done.
I started putting together the rooftop cranes for both the front and the back of the building.
I added the thread that will represent the cable. It's super glued at the top but wont be finished off till later.
I glued it to the roof. I thought this might be tough to keep from sliding or moving while drying but I had no problems. It's a little front heavy with the lead casting.
Last step was adding the side supports.
I started getting ready to build the loading dock. This is the bag of wood for it. It's mostly all pre-cut so it should go pretty quickly.
The stripwood was all organized by rubber bands but the ravages of time have caused them to turn to dust and goo. I made little piles of all the sizes.
That's all for today. Thanks for following along.
Tomorrow I'll try to get some of the deck assembled.
Nice work Steve. I've got Jimmie's version of the castings so you've given me plenty of ideas for finishing the stone structure.

Enola is a great little town. AND you can watch trains 24/7 if you wanted.
this really turned out very nice. I like the way your stone walls turned out.
Really neat lady that runs The Station George..... 8)
Thanks everyone.
I made some progress on the loading dock these last couple days.
I use double sided tape to secure the framework for the loading dock. The instructions recommending gluing directly to the template but I prefer this method.
I started with the longer boards. I ended up cutting up the boards for a more realistic look. Most of the dock will be covered with castings and other things so I didn't get too crazy,
(https://craftsmanstructures.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/img_0032-e1581557753696.jpeg)
This area was next. The kit was short a few boards so I had to make a few. I think this is the first and only time I've built one of George's kits that was short or missing something.
Finished running the boards.
The vertical boards are made from these little pieces of siding.
I test fit the loading dock in place and marked it's location.
I turned the whole dock upside down and cut some pieces out of the vertical boards to give it some weathering. I also added some nail holes.
I gave the whole assembly another A&I wash to get the color I wanted.
The instructions recommend gluing the dock down at this time but I chose to build the brick loading dock in the front first so I can make sure them fit together well.
This is the base for the front smaller loading dock.
I was happy with the fitment so I glued both assemblies down.
I placed the brick building in it's position so I could get an idea of how everything will look together.
Next step is the little wooden shed on the right side of the building.
Thanks for following along.
Steve great coloring and weathering. You doing a fine job.
Jerry
Looks terrific, Steve!
Cheers, Mark.
Really nice work on that large dock. The board coloring is spot on. I also like how you weathered and broke some of the front vertical boards for an individual look.
--Opa George
Hey Steve:
I always loved this kit because of all the stone & brick walls. You are doing a beautiful job with it and I just can't wait to see more. The platform looks great.
Karl
That looks fantastic.
Beautiful platform.
Great looking, the decking came out especially nice.
Jim
Thanks everyone for all the positive feedback!
Next step was building this little shed that goes on the right side of the building on top of the decking. I painted the walls with that same color as the tan on the main structure Apple Barrel Khaki. The trim is also the same as the main building Folkart Clover.
I glued the shed to the main structure. I ended up with a gap where the walls meet the stonework so I shimmed the bottom front up with a few business cards while it dried. It will be easier to hide the gap on the flooring then it would be if I had to hide it on the wall. Lots more options to cover it up with details.
The roofing for the shed is a precast piece of white metal. I was a little apprehensive to use it but I decided to give it a try. I primed it with khaki color and used some A&I on the wood parts.
After the A&I dried I used a couple shades of chalk mixed with alcohol to paint the wood pieces.
I painted the corrugated metal pieces with gray paint followed by A&I. Of course the metal looks heavily weathered so I wanted to really rust it up. This is just the base.
I painted all the gray areas with a slurry of alcohol and rust colored pastel chalk powders to rust them up.
I liked the way the roof looked at this point so I glued it down.
Next step was adding the platforms and staircases. I added the upper platform to the front upper door.
Next I added the second platform and the lower supports for the upper platform. I figured out the placement of the second platform using the little stair casting as a guide.
The small stair casting is glued in place.
I had to cut one step off the large casting to fit it in place. Once I got the stairs in place I wasn't happy with the color of the wood. Between this photo and the next one I washed over the steps with A&I to better match the decking.
Added the railing posts. You can see the stairs are a little bit darker.
I added all the railings and the little one on the left of the upper door.
I darkened up the railings with some A&I after the glue fully dried. I've done this too early in the past and the alcohol causes the whole thing to fall apart. Everything is glued with TiteBond II carpenters glue. This photo also shows the small gap between the bottom of the shed and the decking. It's pretty manageable and won't be noticeable once I add all the dock castings.
I glued the platform on the rear of the structure. This one has no stairs. I also added the concrete dock. It's a piece of wood colored with gray paint and weathered with chalks. I didn't spend a ton of time with this area because it will be impossible to see once I add the structure to the layout.
That's all for today. Next step is the roof for the brick building.
Thanks for following along.
Something to try on the corrugated roof: rub a soft pencil on it, which will add a small amount of 'graphite shine'. If you don't like the effect, it'll be easy to clean off with water or alcohol.
dave
all the stacks and vents on the roof. You need tar flashing. White glue applied with toothpick and then very small pointed brush to apply black paint to simulate tar. All adds greatly to the finished look.
mike lynch..............HAIRBALL
Beautiful modeling.
Great detailing Steve.
Jerry
Good choice keeping the cast metal shed roof. It's gorgeous with detail. Also a good job in getting the cast metal wood stairs to match the weathered wooden decking. That can be tough to get close, but you did it.
--Opa George
Thanks everyone.
I added the roof to the brick structure.
This is the way I install my chimneys. I drill a hole in the center and super glue a toothpick in place.
All the chimneys are secured with Liquid Leading. This secures them and looks like roofing tar.
Mike, I use Liquid Leading to represent roof tar. Its a flat grimy black colored glue from any craft store. I think it's used for stain glass windows. I try to have it hardly visible around the chimneys if possible. All the main roof chimneys were installed this way.
I started adding the shingles. Same as before.
I glued the building to the main structure before I finished the final row so I could get the shingles right up to the stone.
Beautiful shake shingle roof on the brick. I like the contrast of the brick and shakes with the stone main structure. Very striking!
--Opa George
That is coming along nicely.
Looks really nice.
Steve when you get a chance. I sent you and email here under messages.
Jerry
Thanks everyone!
I finished adding the shingles and colored them using the same methods as the main roof.
I added a couple pieces of corrugated metal to the roof to represent a makeshift repair and add a little character to the roof.
Now that the roof is in place I started adding the downspouts. They are made with thick wire bent with a set of needlenose pliers.
I also added the downspouts to the other side of the structure.
I added some wire supports and weathered with some rust powders. I'll add moss and vines once I get the ground cover down.
Thanks for following along.
Next step is laying the tracks and the base ground cover.
Great work Steve!
Very nice build Steve.
Wow...that is some fantastic work. The roofing, stonework, and overall weathering is really great!
John
Agreed--all beautiful work. I particularly like your downspouts.
--Opa George
Hey Steve:
you have done just one beautiful job on this one. All looks just great.
Karl
Very outstanding work Steve. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks everyone!
Small update today, not much modeling time these last few days.
I need to add the track and scenery to this area before I can proceed with the cranes.
I added some ground cover and the lower mounting plate for the crane.
The crane assembly came in 2 pieces. The majority of this casting is wood so I primed it with khaki spray.
I colored all the metal parts with Apple Barrel Pavement and added the air pump and the gear. I also weathered it with some chalks and dry brushing.
I added the hook and mounted the crane to the loading dock. I really didn't like the way the hook was sitting.
I glued a few of the crates to a pallet, added some rope and mounted the hook this way. This looked more natural to me.
I colored the wood for the overhead crane. Hopefully Ill get some time to work on that tonight.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm glad to have everyone following along.
As expected you have done some great modeling Steve. Thank you for taking the time to share and comment.
ed
Oh, oh, that really looks good.
Very nice Steve
Thanks everyone! I appreciate the feedback.
Hey Steve:
WOW!!! beautiful job on the crane.
Karl
Steve,
Can't think of anything else to add to all the other comments. Well done.
Tom ;D
Steve,
Outstanding build !
The coloring is fantastic !
Tommy
Steve, very nice! Ingenious and common sense solution to getting that crane line taut. Falls in the "why have I never thought of doing that?" category.
--Opa George
Looking superb, Steve.
Cheers, Mark.
Thanks Everyone!
Todays update...The overhead crane assembly.
I assembled the first side of the crane assembly. Pretty straightforward assembly..lots of small NBW castings though.
I added the compressor to the backside of the crane.
Started working on the other side..
I added the rail assemblies to the top of the traveling crane. The kit doesn't provide the rail. George recommended code 100 but this is darkened rail from micro-engineering and I think it's code 70.
I added the small 90 degree metal plates to between the rail portion and the uprights. I also added the boom assembly.
I'm probably going to work on the color of the wood portion of the traveling crane. Maybe add some more gray tones to match the uprights.
I still need to add a bumper to the track. I had a Hayes type from Tichy but I didn't really like it once I put it together. It was too fragile and I didn't think it could take even the slightest bump from a boxcar without falling apart.
After I finish some little details on the crane I'll be moving to the long dock roof assembly.
Thanks for following along everyone.
So many gorgeous details, and the traveling crane is really nice. Beautiful job, Steve.
--Opa George
Steve that is some wonderful modeling your doing.
Jerry
Beautiful modeling Steve.
Very, very, very nice.
What an awesome modeling job! Thanks for sharing it on the forum.
;D ;D ;D
HeySteve:
All I can say is WOWIE!!!!! what a beautiful job you are doing on this kit. It is one of my favorite FSM kits and yes I have one.
Karl
Thanks everyone!
I added the bumper to the track. This is from Peco. I sprayed it with gray paint and weathered it with some chalks.
I started working on the roof of the canopy. I wanted some areas where the tarpaper had worn away exposing some wood so I cut some pieces of the cardstock and added wood filler.
I decided not to use the construction paper included with this kit. I wanted to experiment with some black tissue paper for tarpaper. You can see where I tore the paper before I installed it.
I glued the paper down with some white glue spread out thin with my finger.
I covered the whole roof and added some tears to the paper with the blunt end of some tweezers.
I added the canopy supports, the framework and the 86 rafter tails.
I knew it was going to be challenging to glue the canopy to the platform. It's very top heavy so I drilled out the center of the posts, cut down some T pins and glued them in the holes. I used foam for the base of my diorama so I wanted the pins to go through the platform and into the foam.
I stuck the platform into a piece of foam to work on it. I also ended up painting the paper again with some Apple Barrel Pavement after this picture was taken. The primer I originally used started to get some sheen to it once I handled it a bit.
I weathered the roofing paper with some chalks and glued the canopy in place.
I'll finish detailing the roof once I installed the signage.
I took a lot of inspiration for this build from Brian Nolan's version of the kit. I liked the office he added to the left side of the structure using a Master Creations Office kit. My next step is building a small building in a similar location. I won't be using the Master Creations kit only because I already have one very close to where this kit will be installed on the layout.
Thanks for following along.
Mr. Nolan would be proud to have his name mentioned with your outstanding modeling.
ed
Wow - those rafter tails are perfect. I mean perfect. Amazing. Love the NBW castings, too. Great stuff, thx.
Looking good Steve..... 8)
Excellent modeling Steve.
Wonderful modeling Steve! Simply wonderful! ;D ;D ;D
Apple Barrel Pavement you say? I need to get me some of that. ;)
Beautiful build. Thanks for sharing, and please keep us updated.
Mark
Fantastic modeling! I think it would be more prototypical if one of the rafter tails was a little warped or slightly out of place. ;) Great work.
I appreciate John's comment on rafter tails. If you do just one it looks like you screwed up. So how many do you do? Always a modeling dilemma.
That is some really fine modeling...even the tiniest details like NBW castings hold up to close up pics. Really great!!
John
Steve,
I remember when Chippy Hollow first came out. I saw the ad in MR and decided not buy it because I thought it was not interesting....too toy-like. Your build seems different. Looks very real and plausible. Really beautiful job.
Really impressive modelling Steve. I was really impressed with the small end shed casting for a roof. Your experiment with the tissue roofing came out great. So much nice modelling , well done.
Hey Steve:
The platform looks just gorgeous.
Karl
Thanks for the positive feedback everyone!
As far as the rafter tails go when I make them uneven it always looks wrong to me even on a heavily weather building. One of those things that might be prototypical but feels wrong to my eye so I try to make them as straight as possible.
I make some headway over the last week. I decided to rename the building as a tribute to Brian Nolan. His build of this kit is one of the main reasons I bought it and I've been referring to it throughout the build. I never met Brian but I'm a huge fan of his modeling and I rewatch his video on building techniques frequently.
This is the sign I made to rename the building. I stuck with the original style of the sign.
(https://craftsmanstructures.files.wordpress.com/2020/04/img_0285-e1586133997510.jpeg)I scratchbuilt this little office for the scene. It's a pretty simple design. I used windows and doors from my scrap bin but I don't know where they came from. The front door might be from the original FSM Pile Driver. I made the foundation out of wood and the texture is from Liquitex Ceramic Stucco from Michaels. Karl Schulz told me about this product and it works really well.
Another angle of the same building. The roof is done with black tissue paper same as the other roof.
I glued down the office and prepped for the first layer of dirt and grass.
It's starting to come together now that I add the dirt base. I do a simple first layer and add more weeds and details after everything dries. I had some issues with the decking warping especially the vertical siding around the base but everything started to settle down once it dried.
The ground cover is still a little wet here.
I thought the area around the office needed something other than a few castings so I made this wood rack. I wanted the wood to look fairly new but still toned down a bit so I used some Hunterline Driftwood to tone it down a little.
I glued the wood rack in place.
I added a couple little details around the office. I also threw some trash on the roof to break it up a bit. This is just a start of course. This kit comes with tons of castings.
Thanks for checking in. I'll be finishing up the details and finishing up the model over the next couple days. Stay tuned.
Very nice Steve
Awesome workmanship as usual Steve!
Hey Steve:
the lumber rack and the small building look just beautiful. Can't wait to see this guy finished. Also great to to see the Brian Nolan sign.
Karl
Beautiful Modeling Steve.
Very nice finishing details. Your workmanship really holds up and shines in the close-up photos.
--Opa George
Your finished photos look fantastic, the tar paper roof is spot on.
Simply, an awesome build and tribute to an awesome builder by an awesome builder of an awesome kit.
I am definitely stealing the black tissue paper roofing idea. Would love to see a tutorial on that some time...
Looking wonderful, Steve.
I think even rafters would be very prototypical. They would all be cut at the same time so one would expect them to all be the same.
Cheers, Mark.
Steve, Great modeling as always. I have also admired Brian Nolan"s modeling. I have a question for you and others. Who started the practice of throwing tires on the roof? personally, I don't get it.
Extremely well done.
Thanks everyone. I ended up finishing up the kit this last weekend.

Beautiful!
Man, that's nice, Steve. Thanks for posting.
Looks magnificent.
I agree Beautiful build Steve.......Dennis
Beautiful modeling.
Very well done indeed.
Tom ;D
As good as it gets.
Thanks for all the really great detail pics, they really represent your attention to details. Great job on the build.
Wow , what a beauty, love all the different textures , and how the dull colors all make it blend. Great Job
Excellent build. Thanks for posting! The details are superb and bring it all together!

Can't get any better than that. A beautiful job indeed.
Wonderful detailing!

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone!
On to the next project....
Great work Steve.....beautiful scene to add to the layout. 8)
Hey Steve:
All I can say is WOWIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most beautifully done.
Karl
Hey Steve:
I also have this FSM kit. I was looking through my stuff stored in boxes just see what was in them. Your not gonna believe what I found. I didn't even know I had there nor do I know where they came from anymore. As can be seen they are plaster castings. As can be seen one wall need to be repaired somehow.
Karl
Just beautiful, Steve.
Cheers, Mark.

KARL..........from the looks of those hydrocal castings they most likely are very thin and thin equals fragile. Will take a lot of creativity to duplicate some doors and windows to fit those openings. Because JIMMY offers them as a licensed re-issue ?? I would buy the complete set for the structure/kit.
If you somehow manage to crack a wall, never insert any type of glue into the broken joint and the joint will not close up. Better to use 1/8 or 1/4 sq basswood behind it as a stiffener.

The best way to attach the walls together is use a 1/4" square basswood stick and coat two a-joining sides with HOUSEHOLD GOOP . It will bond to the hydrocal and still offer a little flex to the goop. You will be able to pick up the walls assembled and handle it , safely.
Thanks guys!
Karl, very cool find. Do you still have the original metal castings from the kit? I would say you could use those wall castings with Jimmy's window castings but I've never tried to secure heavy white metal windows to hydrocal walls. Might have some issues there. Before I started this kit I made molds for the walls and windows/doors of the little brick shed but not the main building. If you still have the original unbuilt FSM kit I'll walk you through making some resin copies of the windows and doors if you'd like. The resin should glue to the hydrocal easily.

Hey Steve:
I also have this FSM kit. I was looking through my stuff stored in boxes just see what was in them. Your not gonna believe what I found. I didn't even know I had there nor do I know where they came from anymore. As can be seen they are plaster castings. As can be seen one wall need to be repaired somehow.
