Wow...what a great design.

That peninsula to the left is going to be amazing. Makes me think of Dick Patterson's HOn30 Dolly Varden, which was featured in MR many many years ago...just lots of complexity of bridges, controlled viewing angles in and out of a deep canyon and track coming and going unexpectedly popping out of tunnels.

Happy Birthday Frank!! (looks like I checked in on the right day)

Came this close to dismantling and starting over...the layout design isn't 'moving me' to continue...I'm now leaning towards making some significant design changes but maintaining the significant base I built - completely supported by cabinets.

I came to realize I really miss the backdrops for the overall effect I seek and my flirtation with a more 'caricaturish' design was fleeting. What I really want are more panoramic mountain scenery but also more room for my existing structures. Back to the drawing board...which is a favorite place for me.

Hope all are well. Life has had me away-but I'll be checking in.

Thanks Mark, your modeling is certainly an inspiration. I've never been as "multi-level" or multi-grade as I'm trying to be this time. I love the way you've incorporated steep roads with buildings set on angled foundations, etc to accommodate...just adds so much more interest and you've nailed it.

Quote from: PRR Modeler on January 08, 2024, 02:27:13 PMGreat progress John. Are you building it similar to your last layout?
Absolutely nothing like it...I have a 5' x 5' space, so it won't be linear with a backdrop like the last...this one is looking to be much more "cartoonish" for lack of a better word...dramatic scenes, lots of very vertical scenery, 3 independent loops with trains popping in and out of tunnels and across precarious bridges no engineer would put their name on...long way to go, obviously, but I plan to have a couple of peaks over 6' above the floor and very controlled viewing angles on all 4 sides to make it seem larger...nothing like I've done before...I guess I still haven't judging by the pics.  ;D

So...I'm trying to stoke the creative fires again (Happy New Year)...I did some thinking and just screwed a few vertical 1x2's to help give a sense of the verticality I hope for. I'm planning on using the Bragdon rock making system extensively and these posts and some additional formers, when the time comes, will support the initial foam/mesh landscape base that the castings and other scenery will be attached to.

The pictures are from 3 of the corners, just to give some context of the layout and the dramatic scenery I'm shooting for.

Man, it's good to be back to the place where I initially met most of my existing MR friends initially, heard about and attended the best conventions and, basically, took my modeling to another level

good to be here-thanks to those who made it possible.

Two years, a new home, and a whole new layout that's just getting going.

Talk to you all soon.

I think it's a great re-release for four reasons. Firstly, it's an awesome kit. Nothing else to it.

Secondly, it's in the name of celebration, therefore a one off. I know there will not be any re-releases of other kits.

Thirdly, this kit was premium ammo for scalpers on eBay. Anything to cut scalpers off at the neck is always going to be a good thing.

Finally, it's an awesome kit ;)

My thoughts exactly...it's a model railroad kit. No offense to speculators and resellers...but it's a model railroad kit. If more people are dying for them, let Doug make the money he deserves for his awesome designs. They can go play with bitcoin or something more traditional.

Morning All and Happy Monday from frigid Florida (I don't expect much sympathy  ;) ).

Jerry, those trucks are great...I'd forgotten Woodland Scenics had those white metal kits...I used to enjoy their mini-scenes and those trucks might really work for my layout.

Have a great day and stay warm. Haven't talked to my Northern family yet today...I assume my Mom's home on Cape Cod is buried in snow. Heading up for a visit in Feb. maybe one of you can do something about the weather before I get there.

I just booked my hotel room...

The Convention Hotel appears to be sold out, so room rates are effectively doubled...the NNGC website lists two others "within a block", so I booked my room at the Marriot Tacoma Downtown and hope it's really just a block. I like being able to run up to my room with my loot from the vendors and unload, etc (like childhood Halloween tactics). Might want to book a room if you're thinking about it...you can always cancel.

Hope to connect with some of you there!

Looking forward to Tom's vigorous return to the Forums. The hard part will be slowing him down for his own good...I know he must be chompin' at the bit.
