Promised myself not to start a new build until I went back and completed these from a year ago.
Hmmm...some posts will stick, others not.
Nice colour scheme.
Looking good. Are these scratch builds?
Cheers, mark.
Posting issues...
Sorry, guys...I'm caught up in the posting problems we're having. This is FOS' Mathias Spring and the '17 Expo show kit, Altoona Brewery, both cut down to serve as background "flats". More to come as I can post...
What's the problem Dave , I see them just fine.
Can only post 1 out of every 10 or 12 tries.
Dave,
Great kitbash of the kit. Love the colors and weathering.
Tom ;D
Thanks, Tom. More to come as the posting errors allow.
I'd like to do more with elevation changes, something like this...
...so out comes the pink foam...
For a retaining wall I had these New England Brownstone samples from the final CSS. I glued them together, filled the gap with spackle, stained with a variety of Hunterline stains, and added the vines. As you can see I should have used plaster instead of spackle. Maybe the seam wouldn't be so visible. More vines, I guess!
I should probably sketch this out ahead of time instead of flying by the seat of my pants with the picture in my head of where I'm headed. The idea is to have a mess of background structures up high above the rest of the town, kind of the way George did his town of Franklin, and then the town sloping down toward the viewer. Of course, I'm working in less space.
This is very interesting...I've posted the last several updates on my PC rather than my iPhone or iPad and I'm experiencing none of the posting issues I've had for a couple of weeks, now.
I've used AK Interactive concrete, so I thought I'd give their asphalt a try.
Need to add a dock, and realize I forgot the canopies over the docks.
Work on the canopies. Realize after the fact that the replaced panel probably would have been better someplace other than where the support wire goes. Oh, well. :o
Will need to repeat this for the other structure.
Very nice modeling Dave.
Thanks, Curt!
Looking good Dave.
Jim
Goin' to be a good looking scene.
Dave, buildings look really nice and the elevation change presents a very pleasing variety of angles and rooflines. That spot of spackle on the retaining wall could disappear soon as the vines "grow."
--George
Thanks for the support, Jim, Bob, and George. You can bet those vines will grow when I finish the scene!🤣
Added building #2.
As you can see, working from a mental picture (at least in my case ::) ) can lead to problems. I came up short on the size of the pink foam. No biggie...easily fixed when I plant it into the scene. Secondly, I forgot to allow for the loading dock when I installed the asphalt drive (intended to be truck-served...no spur). Since I want to keep this as narrow as possible so as not to eat up too much real estate for a background scene, I'll have to fudge things a bit. So I'll scrap the dock and park a vehicle there.
Now, you say, what's to keep the drivers from backing in, cutting it close, and just rolling down the hill, over the edge, and onto the town below. Exactly. So I'll have to noodle something to address that little issue. So much for careful planning. :o
I considered several types of fences/barriers to keep Foley's intrepid drivers (relatively) safe. Decided to try my hand at masonry and go with a low stone wall such as those I encountered daily when I drove a 1937 White tour bus in Glacier National Park.
About a month ago, thinking I might like to play with molding my own stone walls for structures, I ordered some Baby Building Blocks from Dr. Ben's. Being pretty bad at estimating sizes/quantities, I ordered two 2-pounders. Anyone need some to play with?
I know some of you have used these before. They're pretty cool...actual little pieces of granite. So I started messing around with them. This is just as they come from the bag...no cutting on my part.
Started gluing them together using Gorilla Super Glue Gel and then thought, "Wait a minute...I should be experimenting with coloring them before I get too far. So I pulled out all of my Hunterline stains and started putzing around.
Wanted my color variation so got a little bolder with the various stains...
...and finished with this...
So I'm thinking a low retaining wall. Nothing to really stop someone from going over (memories of Montana ;) ) but also not too tall so as to obstruct the view of the structure.
Looks like the work of a Master Stone Mason.
Jim
Hey Dave:
Nice work.
Karl
Nice modeling Dave. The difference in colors looks great.
Looking good, Dave.
I think an interesting technique to try with these stones would be to place them together as a wall, and then paint the wall like a stone face, with all the different colours blending into each other. Then dismantle the wall, mix up the stones and build it again. In this way you should get each stone with a variety of different colours, but still different to the stones surrounding it.
Cheers, Mark.
Thanks Jim, Karl, Mark. Got sidetracked doing yard work...back at it ASAP!
Been working on scenery.
Hey Dave:
Looks just great.
Karl
Thanks, Karl...a ways to go, yet.👍🏻
Dinner...gotsta quit. >:(
Dave, the hillside scenery looks fantastic. The entire scene is really cool.
--George
Thanks, George! Still more to add...cinder blocks, a couple of old tires some jerk dumped down the hill...then on to the other half of the scene. Likely this will have to wait as today is mowing and then packing for a 10-day trip to New England, including our pilgrimage to see George Sellios.
I'm happy to report they're no longer shelf orphans.
Already started the next scene moving down to the right...
The buildings look great Dave.
Thanks, Curt.
Dave, Getting better every day.........Dennis
Thanks, Dennis!
Dave, absolutely super results! The brickwork is excellent, and the foliage makes the scene for me.
--George
Thank you, George!👍🏻
Wow! That's really nice. Well done my friend. :D :D :D
Thank you kindly, Bob.
Outstanding. The foliage, the fence, and, of course, the structures came out great!
Thanks, John...on to the next one!
Hey Dave:
Beautiful job. Love the scenery. Especially the retaining walls.
