Title: FSM # 170 Sawmill
Post by: tom.boyd.125 on June 23, 2019, 07:48:10 PM
What's India Ink and Ammonia on the wood look like without a box of those Fine Scale Miniatures # 170 Sawmill metal castings to complete the picture ?
Here's the reference photos ! Note the NWB items have been installed...

Dick,
Note : Wood was stained with india ink... Bombay brand brown 20 percent & Higgins black 80 percent mix with ammonia in a large metal pan. This is dangerous to do ! Even in a open garage with a fan on and wearing long rubber gloves...you can burn your skin and your airways with the fumes...but the result is really something. Read my next post with some additional info.

Bob,
Note : Wood was stained with waterproof india ink... Bombay brand brown 20 percent & Higgins black 80 percent mix with ammonia in a large metal pan.  THIS IS DANGEROUS TO DO !  Even in a open garage with a fan on and wearing long rubber gloves...you can burn your skin and your airways with the fumes...but the result are really something. India Ink is waterproof but it remains sensitive to ammonia and other alkaline materials. Ammonia (NH3) will change the PH and therefore Rheology of ink. Now we are talking chemistry.....Should mention each bundle of wood in the kit was soaked for 10 minutes at a time and when removed from the bath to dry will be jet black in color. The wood stayed damp for several weeks while drying. Then the magic happens ! So that's why most modelers use rubbing alcohol mixed with india ink...

Hi Tom and Others,
Greetings from the Pacific Northwest. I'm new to the forum and have been following several builds over the past six months. Great craftsmanship abound!
I've been wanting to gently join in and couldn't resist on this build! The FSM #170 Sawmill was my first craftsman kit many years ago and I've been building ever since! Tom, you'll enjoy this kit. And you're off to a great start.
If there is a "newbie" section... that's where I'll be seated and watching from.

Lynn,
Great to hear from you. Working on more than one project is usual.
Summertime here means lots of wood gets stained in the garage and can primers are used to spray detail castings, plaster and resin walls a lot in the driveway for the fall & winter projects.

Dick,
Thanks for the comment. Your Sierra West shack looks great. Well Done !
Need to practice more with those Rembrandt chalks that were picked up last year, ... the ones mentioned on the Sierra West website.
