Title: Riverbend Chapel by FOS
Post by: ACL1504 on September 06, 2020, 05:56:01 PM
First, my apologies to Mr. Reading Bob. I've decided to build this one myself. I have a few ideas for it other than a stock build so I'm taking it off the builder's market.  :P

Bob Dye did a very nice job on his build of the neat FOS kit and I hope mine comes out just as good.

I have some ideas I want to change, can't remember the last kit I built without kit bashing the heck out of it. I'll share these ideas as I go.

I've followed Bob's build thread and have reviewed the directions twice already. I believe I can make my changes without to much of a problem.

To me, this looks like a Greek Orthodox style church. The fine folks in Tahope are all Southern Baptists.

Now, I haven't yet decided if this will be a well maintained church, fitting of the South. Or maybe a southern church in the South where the church member ship has declined. Church revenue declines when the church membership drops and this leads to the church not keeping up with the necessary repairs and upgrades like painting and cemetery maintenance.

Only time will tell or only Tom will tell.

Good or bad, the church will be located on the other side of the tracks.

Bob,

I appreciate you following along on the adventure. I think the spot will dictate the condition of the church, maintained vs run down. It will most likely be run down in appearance.

I decided I wanted to change the look of the church steeple. I want a more Southern Baptist Church look. The angled roof portions on top part of the steeple don't fit that look.

The four angled pieces are nine boards high. If I remove the nine boards, the steeple is that much shorter. If I remove the angled sections, and add a nine board extension it will remain the same height. This would be the hardest of the two options.

Angled steeple sections.

Here is a view of the angled sections over a nine board extension.

I wanted the same steeple height so I chose the harder of the two options.

I marked the top straight portion and then removed the nine upper boards. It's good to keep some scrap wood around for just this purpose.

I measured thrice and cut once.

The next piece is a small wall portion of the steeple. I didn't want it mixed up with the others so I marked it "S" for steeple.

I then removed the upper nine boards.

More in a few.

Each new additional upper wall piece was cut and lightly sanded to fit each steeple wall section.

Prior to gluing them together, I marked each one to correspond with the section it was cut and sanded to fit.

I found my additional/scrap walls were just slightly different. One was Kappler and the others are Northeastern Lumber.

No worries, I pressed the three wall sections against a thick metal ruler and then used and new #11 blade and smaller metal ruler and trimmed them at the top.

Nest comes the bracing of the walls.

There is a small rear addition on the back of the chapel. This won't show where I plan on using the chapel so I won't be taking the time to add it.

However, the rear wall is cut so the addition side walls fit into the rear. If I decide to light the chapel, I don't want any light coming out of these openings.

I measured the width of the opening as an HO scale of 5". Of course, I only have scale 4Xs and 6Xs.

I took a piece of 6X6 and used a heavy duty sanding stick to sand off a scale 1 inch.

I then cut two pieces to length for the wall "plugs".

These were glued in place with the glue being applied from the rear so no glue gets on the exterior wall face.

Seems to me I have less and less time to post these days. So, this is my tomorrow post from six days ago.

This kit has several different options if you are a kit basher like me. I've already modified the steeple and now I'm changing the side substructure as well.

Here is a look at the kit with the substructure on the right.

For a small country Southern Baptist Church, the smaller the better. So, I'm going with just the main church and steeple.

Here is a look at the chapel in the area I plan on it fitting. I definitely like the smaller version better.

The smaller chapel will also give me more room for the old cemetery. I purchased the additional cemetery fence and tombstones.

I decided to take a different approach to painting the walls, windows and door on this kit.

Normally, the windows and doors would be painted separately from the walls. Since the church windows are more card stock, I opted to try and paint them all at the same time. After they were installed in the opening that is.

I first stained the walls and windows with a light application of Hunterline Light Gray A&I. The A&I soaked right in the paper and then became very light when dry.

I didn't want to chance a second A&I wash as it may have turned out to dark.

I also applied the same light wash of A&I to the walls. I decided to not have any nail holes in the walls.

I removed the arched windows from the stock sprue and made a test fit in the opening.

These frames fit on the inside of the window opening, flush with the rear of the wall.

Post by: ACL1504 on September 16, 2020, 08:27:32 PM
Most of the window frames were to loose to fit the opening without falling out. Here is how I solved the problem.

I applied a very tiny amount, tip of a tooth pick, of glue to the inside rear of the opening. I then placed a spare piece of wall section behind the opening and then placed the frame next to the glue.

I used a broken piece of 4X4 to press the window frame flush with the wall section. I then slid the spare wood piece off the interior side of the wall.

Here is a look at the window frame in place and flush with the interior side of the wall section.

I may add interior lights to the church and I wanted to see how the glued in frames blocked the light.

They didn't.

Here is how I solved this issue.

I used the edge of a clean tooth pick and applied a thin layer of glue to the rear of the window frame and the wall section. I then smoothed the glue with my finger and let dry.

Here is a look at the frames in place.

Knowing the glue would dry clear, I carefully painted the rear of the frames, over the glue, with Floquil Weathered Black. Any dark color will do. I was very careful not to get any black on the window mullions. The mullions will be stained with a thin wash of white.

The rest of the wall will also be painted black.

When the wall was held up to the LED work lights, no light shinned through.

The church entrance has a solid double door, no windows.

I followed the same procedure as the church windows for installing the doors. I decided to glue a small scrap piece of wood to the rear/interior wall around the door opening.

The walls have the laser burn on the inside of the windows. This doesn't take staining to well so I used  full Strength Floquil Reefer White to lightly coat the area.

Using a light coat of paint allowed me to keep the window paint looking faded.

I then used a "white wash" of Floquil Reefer White to cover the walls. I thinned the white to 40 parts white and 60 parts/% thinner. Once the first coat was applied and dry (not cured), a second (final) coat was applied and allowed to dry and cure.

The finished walls aren't as white as they appear in the photo.

I've decided to light the church. More on that later in the build. Also, I decided to add more windows to the right side where the attached portion of the church was supposed to be. I'm after a small southern town church look. So the church would also have stained glass windows on both sides.

Unfortunately, I didn't decide to light the church until after the windows and window frames were already glued and painted on the left wall. I could have used the other side wall as a pattern for the right wall. This made it more difficult to draw and cut out the new window openings.

I'll fast forward here a bit as well and just state that the new window openings were cut and the exterior wall side was lightly stained with Hunterline Light Gray A&I.

The cut marks around the window openings won't show once the exterior window frames are added.

I reached out to Doug Fosscale and he is sending me more laser cut window mullions and exterior frames for my kit bash. The manufacturers are great at helping us with extra parts. Thank you Doug!

Wall bracing was added to the interior side.

NOTE: No window opening on the left side of the wall as this is where the church steeple goes.

The new wall is ready to be painted. However, I'll need to wait until the new window parts arrive and the wall and window frames will be painted at that time.

I also decided to build a small structure from the parts not used on the right side of the main church.

I cut a new gabled end and braced it as I did the others. This gabled end will have no windows as it will face the rear of the layout.

Once the A&I was dry, I used my Floquil Reefer White wash and stained the walls.

I like this method better than the sponge method. To me the sponge method can very easily be over done. The walls look unnatural and blotchy from the sponge painting. The weathering effect models are after just doesn't work for me. The sponge leaves big globs of paint on the clapboard edges and doesn't look consistent.

My 2 cents worth on that subject.

I like the walls to be faded and weathered consistently with some paint flakes under the edge of the clapboards.

Lastly for the day, I reversed my procedure for the windows and door. I painted them with full strength Floquil Reefer White and will still wet, dipped them into the Light Gray A&I. I set them on a paper towel to dry.

Tomorrow I'll start adding the stained glass to the church windows.

Greg,

It seems to me with age, I loose interest more often than I did 40 years ago. This is why I have a tendency to go from one project to the other while working on the layout. IE, brass, structures, layout and scenery, repairing freight cars, reading and so on and then repeat!  8)   Oh yea, throw in estates of deceased friends into the mix.  :'(

Busy day today on the build. On almost all my builds where color signs are involved, I make a copy and place it in a sign file/folder.

One just never knows how I may ruin a sign or want to use one later. It's good to have copies.

When adding the stained glass window papers, I didn't want to use a water based glue, even on the edges. The moisture will, by virtue of some capillary action, seep onto the paper and possibly staining the stained glass paper.

For gluing the windows in place, I chose to use Elmer's Natural Glue. It's tacky and works very well for this purpose.

Using the edge of the glue, I applied a small amount of glue around the outside edge of the window as shown below.

You can use your finger to spread it around more, but if you do,  be sure you wipe off the excess glue from your finger. No, I don't have first hand, er, finger experience here.

Oops, I forgot to mention how I cut the stained glass paper.

I cut them so I had a small white border around each stained paper. This gave me some wiggle room when applying the paper to the back of the wall.

While the glue is still tacky, apply the paper to the rear of the window. Turn the wall over to the front and using your fingers move the paper so the stained glass is centered.

Here is how they look from the rear.

I used a #17 flat blade and chopped it off. I plan to use it as a fancy cross on top of one of the tombstones.

I painted the exterior framed truss in the same manner as the rest of the church. I set it aside to dry and cure prior to gluing it in place.

I assembled the four walls of the upper steeple walls together. I used small weights, actually the inside of them, to hold it square until the glue dried.

These walls are small and delicate so I decided to add more bracing. I glued four short pieces of 6X6 scale lumber to the inside of each corner.

It's always a good thing to have it all on the level. I certainly don't want the top spire to look or be crocked.

I have a lot more to add so now is a good time to get "moi" a Diet Pepsi.

I glued the exterior arch in place and also added the cross. The cross was painted with Floquil Brass.

To ensure the cross was correctly positioned, I used a metal square to align the cross vertically.

I then glued the church spire together and set it aside to dry. I placed it on the mat and used the mat lines to ensure it was square while drying. I needed to reshape it only once as the glue dried.

Doug includes, in the kit, a small piece of wire. He suggests the builder use this wire, cut to fit, to fill in the cut/edge lines once the spire is together. I didn't use the wire but it will give the spire a more defined appearance if used.

Since I changed the steeple walls, I knew this wouldn't fit properly as shown below.

I measured the width of the heavy cardstock and found it to be 1/16 thick.

For the church spire I wanted something that looked liked weathered copper. Incidentally, Doug didn't mention, in the instructions, how the steeple should be painted. If you have this kit and haven't yet built it, here is how for several years I've been representing weathered copper.

I used some scrap paper used in the kit and painted a small section with Floquil Antique Bronze. Any brown color will work for this. I just happened to still be using the Antique Bronze.

While the paint was still "tacky" and not totally dry, I used some of DR. Ben's Light Patina, item #1131.

I used a soft bristle brush and "dusted" on some of the powered patina. I then used my finger to blend the patina with the tacky paint.

I pulled the patina down from top to bottom. This was a sample for me to see how much patina I wanted to use.

The Babe needs me for a minute, I'll be back as my good friend Arnold says.

I painted the church spire with the antique bronze and set it aside to get tacky.

I also painted the two platforms with the bronze color.

Using the method I described above, I added patina to the spire and smaller platform and then carefully glued them together making sure the spire was centered.

The larger platform was also weathered and glued to the smaller walled section. Again, I made sure they were centered. The small cross was glued to the top. The two subassemblies were glued to each other and set aside.

This will be added to the church as a last step after the roof and rolled roofing paper is added.

Bob,

Thank you, I like to change the original look on kits. It gives me a unique look and not just what the manufacturer had in mind. This one was pretty much a no brainer as I wanted a more southern church look. I have more planned in the church appearance as well. Stay tuned.

Hello Tom, I have a question about your weathered copper look roof method. You said that any color brown would do for the base layer, but my question is regarding the powdered patina you used. Is it a light green and could I use some pastel chalk to achieve the same result ? Thanks in advance for any information you are willing to give out.   Jeff

Jeff,

I would say yes, you could use a green pastel chalk. Look at the Statue of Liberty, it has a nice green patina and also has various shades of the green patina look from dark to light. The one caution I would tell you is to practice on some scrap to see how the pastel works with the "tacky of dry" paint. I think it will be fine and look forward to you letting us all know how it worked.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for stopping by and posting a nice compliment. I'm more of a Southern Mattress as well. I grew up in a Presbyterian Church, dated a Catholic girl, got married in a Methodists Church, joined a Baptist Church, well you get the idea. I've had my fill of "organized" churches, etc.

I'm sure most of you noticed the notch on the soffit board in a previous photo. If not,  here it is.

It was necessary for me to cut this in order for the steeple walls to fit square. This was the same problem Bob Dye found when he built his version of the River Bend church.

The problem is that when the corner trim is added to the steeple wall, W6, it makes the wall to wide to fit properly.

Here is how it looks with the corner trim in place. Out of square. I always test fit walls prior to gluing them in place.

With the trim and without the corner trim shown below. Either way, the wall won't fit squarely and flush against the side wall.

With -

Without -

I braced the wall (W6) per the diagram. This corner trim isn't necessary. I had to carefully remove the corner trim from my W6 wall.

With the corner trim removed and the notch cut into the soffit board, the steeple walls are now square.

However, these walls won't be glued in place until the right side wall is glued in place.

The right side wall was test fit and then glued in place. I made sure it was square to the rest of the structure.

As the glued dried, I made sure that the structure was flat. I didn't want to run the chance the newly added wall, while the glue dried, pulled it out of square and not completely flat/level.

When the side wall was glued in place, I added the steeple walls to complete all the main walls.

I made sure the walls in the corner were flush an square to each other. I then checked the level of the top of the steeple walls and then added a small top weight while the glued dried. Also, the steeple walls were clamped tight while the glue dried. In the second photo, the clamps were added after level of the steeple was checked.

Once the four walls were glued together, I test fit the roof. It didn't fit to my liking. I needed it to fit more flush. The roof card was scored and when bent to fit the roof, the cardboard layers separated and caused a little misalignment.

I cut the panel in half and added some 10X10 bracing to prevent the roof from sagging.

This gave me a better fit with just a little "light leak".

I'll now need to glue the roof in place and figure out how to wire it from the bottom. I wanted to have the roof removal and hang the LEDS from the center of the church.

I placed the church over one end of the stock lumber making sure it was square. I then drew to top and right side line on the wood.

I used a metal square to make sure the lines on the wood were square prior to making the cut.

I used the square and a new #11 blade to make the two cuts. Second cut not shown.

As my wall bracing is 10X10, I added some 6X6 bracing flush with the top of the 10X10s. The 6X6s will give me a fit for the floor and overlap the bottom and not allow any light to "leak out".

I used the floor 1/16 basswood for the LED base.

I used Microlumina's copper tape for the wiring base. It has an adhesive side and I just stuck it to the basswood.

I soldered the 90 degree corners as shown. You can see the three LEDs wired in line with the Current Limiter.  When looking at the CL, the flat side facing you, the (+) is one the left. Looking at the photo, you can see the (-) on the CL is wired to the red (+) of the LED. One CL for every three LEDS.

For this build, I chose to use Miniatronics LEDs, #12-625-04. I chose these as the wire leads are very stiff. As I'll show in the next post.

Also, I didn't use heat shrink on the wires after soldering the LEDs together. I used Weldwood Contact Cememt to hold them in place.

The LEDs were then positioned so each one shines up and between the two stained glass panels. One LED for the two in the rear/left and one LED for the front/right panels.  I'm not concerned about lighting the right side as this side can't be seen from a visitor's point of view.

One was used to shine on the front/main stained glass window.

Tom,

Your build of the chapel is coming along beautifully !!
And thank you for the pictures and the in depth explanation of how you did the lighting with the current limiters, much appreciated.   This along with a lengthy explanation from Bob (ReadingBob) on his recently completed service station for the A&WM and additional emails to me have really helped in demystifying the whole LED lighting process.

Thanks again and keep up the great work all around on the A&S RR !!

Most impressive build Tom, but I have one major concern others may be too shy to share.
Given the A&S's success with kits and lighting, those non- shrinkwrapped wires both me. I hope this structure when mounted on the layout will be no where near the ill fated Middletown station. There are recorded instances of lightning having struck in the same place twice despite the old saw to the contrary.
Just sayin'.

Bob,

Thank you. the lighting came out better than I expected. I did  try all different LED. Slim's spot and floor lights didn't light the interior as I wanted. These, the Miniatronics, gave me the "ambient lighting effect" I wanted. This LED gives off light very evenly and makes the church look as if all the lights are on.

Doug did a very nice job of capturing the stained glass. I bet the church he photographed for this kit is wonderful.

Chip,

Thank you for the generous compliment. Can you believe it has been 10+ years since Slim's defective LEDs got me into trouble?

I hope lightning doesn't strike in the same place twice as I'm not sure I'd survive one again. I was on the golf course in 1969, in a rain shelter with a lightning rod, and got hit in the same spot where Forrest Gump took the bullet. I still have the scar but I'm not showing it here.  :-X

But alas, have no fear for the Middletown Station is still here. And, the lights, err, the new LEDs still work.

Okay, lots to share this evening as I was busy with the church build.

I made a visit to my HO scale lumber yard and found some very thin siding material. I'm using this as the floor for a front porch on the church.

I cut a piece 7 scale feet long and 7.5 scale feet wide.

I wanted it flush with the church doors so I glued a thin piece of card stock to the bottom. I stained it with Hunterline Light Gray A&I and placed it on a napkin under a weight until dry. The weight kept it from warping as the A&I dried.

More in a few.

While the floor was drying, I cut a piece of card stock and test fit it over the doors. This is the shape of the porch roof.

As you can see, the pitch is quite different from the pitch of the main church roof.

I removed the porch floor from under the weight and made a second test fit to the front doors. I then flush glued 2X4s to each side of the flooring section. I didn't glued a 2X4 to the rear.

I then stained it (not shown) as I did the walls and set it aside to dry.

Fast forwarding here to show I made two porch railing and roof supports. I used 4X4s for the posts and 2X4s for the railing.

I glued them to the church front wall on each side of the door. I used a metal square to make sure they were installed correctly and level.

The River Bend Church came with a solid foundation but many old country churches in the south were set on brick support columns.

Here is a small KC's Workshop structure I set on brick support columns.

These columns are an HO scale 2 feet in height.

For this church, I decided to use Monster Modelworks brick columns. I stained one with Floquil Zinc Chromate Primer.

Not shown here but I then added a thin wash of Bragdon Mortar mix and let dry. I didn't add much as I planned on extensive weathering of the column.

When thoroughly dry, I used three different reds and randomly dry brushed on Polly Scale DTI Cherry Red, NYC Pacemaker Red and Floquil Red Oxide.

My church in Eustis actually sits on brick columns, but you wouldn't know it, because the outside curtain wall extends to the ground. Then again, it looks like a stone building, but it is actually a wooden structure with exterior blocks that mimic stone, but are actually concrete blocks. It is just over one hundred years old as well.

Hard to believe it has been almost three months since I last posted any updates. Actually, until today, I didn't have any updates. :-X

I got the roof on, painted and weathered. I started by painting the underside of the roof edges with Floquil Reefer White.

When dry, I added lines on the topside for the rolled roofing.

Using a little "fast forward" license here, the rolled roofing was glued onto the roof. I used 3M Transfer Tape to hold the roofing paper in place.

The two roof panels were then glued to the church. Once the two roof panels were dry, I added a ridge piece of rolled roofing.

I weathered the roof using Pan Pastels. I first applied some Payne's Light Grey, then blended in some Payne's Dark Grey and then a little Black. I used a very light amount of Raw Umber for a final touch.

Note, the Raw Umber appears much more visible than it is. The camera picked up the brown. The Raw Umber on the roof is very subtle.

This afternoon I added the front steps to the entrance. I'll also add railings.

The church heater vent pipe was also added. I painted the pipe with full strength Floquil Weathered Black and while the paint was still tacky, I brushed on some Bragdon Rust power.

I'll add weathering to the wall under the vent pipe later.

I started to get the parts and pieces ready to complete the cemetery.

I purchased the cemetery extension kit and found that I was a few parts short. Now, in all fairness to Doug, I may have misplaced the pieces needed to complete the extra supports posts for the wrought iron sections.

I didn't want to bother Doug or wait for replacement parts so I made my own.  I measured the base for the posts and found them to be a scale 6X8. I used HO scale 6 X 8s to make six bases for the posts.

More in a few.

There are small rings that fit on the bottom and top of each post. I found these to be very tight and difficult to get on the posts.

In order go get them to fit properly, I needed to sand the posts. Not a big deal but time consuming none the less.

More in a few. A Diet Pepsi is calling my name.

Doug mentioned to use CAA (super glue) to attach the wrought iron fence to the posts. The tabs for doing this are very small. You would need to edge glue them to the posts.

I decided to make life a little easier for me when doing this. I used HO scale 2 X 2s, cut to fit and glued to each side of each post.

This gives me some room to glue the tabs to the posts.

All the tombstones were painted with Floquil CN Gray and set aside to dry.

I took two photos for some unknown reason so you get two photos here.  :-X   These will be weathered later. Oh, yea, I added more stones to the second photo. :o

All the support posts were painted with Floquil SP Dark Gray. The coffin was painted with Floquil Rail Brown. These will be weathered later when the paint has cured.

The wrought iron gate and fence sections were pained with Floquil Weathered Black. These will also be weathered once the paint has cured.

Done with this one for today.

Well, I hate to complain but I need to get this one finished so I can start the 2021 challenge. I think my lack of progress is due in part to the recovery of covid-19. I just don't seem to be able to concentrate as I did prior to the crap.

I painted the wrought iron fence with Floquil Weathered Black as previously mentioned. I used Pan Pastels, Burnt Umber and Raw Sienna, to add rust to the fence.

I then blended on some Pan Pastel Black to tone down the rust.

I previously painted the posts with weathered black. I didn't like the look as they were to dark.

I repainted them using a lighter gray, Floquil Concrete. Forgot to take the photo.

All the tombstones and fence posts were weathered/dry brushed using Floquil Aged Concrete and Antique White.

I'm building the graveyard on the work bench in stages for a test size with the available parts. This grave yard will be smaller than I wanted. The FOS graveyard is up against the church and not all the fencing is needed so the grave yard is larger.

I've relocated the church and grave yard to best fit the space. One major consideration was the ability to view the stained glass.

I still need to cut in a road across the tracks, ballast the track and redo the scenery at the church. Finishing the church and grave yard is only part of finishing the area.

I finally finished the grave yard posts and fencing.

It is very fragile and with adding the HO scale 2x2's I'm not sure how I would have glued the fence to the posts.

Some of you may have noticed the HO scale 4x4's glued to the inside bottom of some posts. Since the fencing is fragile, I tack glued these to give the fence some stability while it is being installed. They will be removed one the posts are glued in place.

Also, there is a section of fence that has been damaged by a falling tree limb. Well, the limb hasn't fallen yet but it will, trust me.

I wanted to have an open casket so I made one. I used the kit casket as a template and drew the outline on the fence board as shown.

I drew three, one for the top and bottom and a smaller one for the top.

Using one piece for the bottom, I edged glued some HO scale 2x8's to the side. I tried 1x8's but they proved to be to flimsy and difficult to work with.

For the angled side piece, I used a new single edge razor blade and cut down on the 2x8. I then reversed the board and edge glued it to the upper side of the bottom. This gave me the perfect fit for joining the two side pieces of the casket.

An hour later this is what I had. I used the smooth side of an Emory board to clean any fuzz.

After four months and 221 photos, I'm calling this one finished. Since it will go on the layout, the rest will be covered in the A&S RR thread.

This is a great kit and the church can be built as is or kit bashed as mine. I did so in order for my church to look more like a southern style country church.

Building the grave yard was a bit "tricksie" but when finished, it really is a nice touch Doug at FOS came up with.

I thank all who followed and any comments positive or negative are welcome.
