Title: Bar Mills Seckler's Cold Storage Background Flat for the A&S
Post by: ReadingBob on December 26, 2019, 02:19:11 PM
Time to get moving on my next project.  This one's for the Atlantic and Southern Railroad.  It's the Bar Mills Seckler's Cold Storage Background Flat.

It comes well packed in a sturdy box.

Some of the walls are a pressed fiberboard type material.  There's also some Masonite pieces included.  I'll get into what those are for in a little bit.

Here are the instructions and another large Masonite piece.  This one doesn't look like Masonite because it's got a sticky surface on one side covered with a peel away sheet of wax like paper (think 3M Transfer Tape).

There are several bags of assorted goodies which include castings, strip wood, laser cut clapboard walls, etc.  Also some roofing materials.

I started by removing the windows from their sprues using a sprue cutter (definitely a tool worth having on the workbench).  Some folks prefer to paint the windows while still attached to sprues because they're easier to handle that way.  I just prefer to do remove them prior to painting.  No wrong way here.  Either works.   ;)

Even though the sprue cutter is a flush cut type tool I still prefer to clean up the edges with a swipe or two of an emery board.

The windows had just a small amount of flash in a few of the openings.  I used one of these pointing sanding stick type things I picked up at Hobby Lobby (Tom also gave me a few) to clean them up.  Gently scraping them with the edge of a #11 X-Acto blade works too.

I'm jumping ahead a bit on this one and cutting out some of the parts that make the subassemblies that get added after the walls have been put together.  I decided to do this so I could prime and paint the subassemblies at the same time I did the rest of the windows and the castings.  The parts that are on the micro fiber board carriers are easy to remove with a single edged razor blade.

Again, the old emery board comes in handy for smoothing out the edges where I cut them from the carrier.

A little folding and gluing was done to construct the first unit, basically a box with some vents on the front, and now it's time to add some of the details.  In this case the detail is a peel and stick type thing too.  Peel off the backing and stick the part in place.

And we have our first of several subassemblies ready to paint.  :D
(http://www.modelersforum.com/gallery/56-251219115930-42201414.jpeg)

The vent that runs up the wall in the center of the building has some 'bands' that get glued into place.  These are a rather tiny but not too difficult to glue into place if you have a decent set of tweezers to hold them with.

Thanks for following along Curt!  Tom has this one slated for the 'uppers' so it'll be at eye level in the background.

More subassemblies prior to painting.  The water tank supports.  I actually made a mistake on the first one I finished that's in the photo.  The two pieces that are glued over the center of the X, upper and lower, are both the same part if you go by the instructions.  I didn't notice it when I did the first one but they are slightly different sizes.  I had the larger one on top and the smaller one on the bottom.  I carefully removed them and swapped them and they look better now.  ::)

It was around this point, while I was gluing the plates to the second support, that I realized the two parts were not identical.

Next up was the fire escapes.  There are three of them and they were fairly simple to assemble.  Just fold the ends and front up (after gluing a support piece underneath) and glue the edges together.

I used anything I had handy on the workbench to hold them in place while the glue set.  :P
(http://www.modelersforum.com/gallery/56-251219120030-422062214.jpeg)

This was my first 'what the heck' moment.  There are three metal chimney castings and three small metal vent pipes include in the kit each of which has base that's angled to go on a roof with a pitch.  All the roofs for this structure are flat.  Looking the photo's I can see where the three chimneys each have the small vent pipe coming out of them.  ???

So, I took them out to the workbench in the garage and use a cutoff wheel in the old Dremel to cut the base of each chimney square to it'd sit on the flat roof and then I cut the base of the vent pipes.  I then drilled a hole into the top of the chimney so I could glue the vent pipe into the hole.  In the process of drilling the hole in one of the chimneys I got a tad too aggressive that the casting shattered.  It just so happened I had a smaller version of a casting with a chimney/vent sitting on the workbench so I'll use that in place of the one I broke.  ::)

I mentioned earlier the large sheet of Masonite had a peel and stick surface.

It's the 'bracing for the rear of the front wall and has to be position in the correct place on the first try.  There's no mulligan on this one.   :o
(http://www.modelersforum.com/gallery/56-251219120031-422102255.jpeg)

Okay, it was at this point in the construction that I realized I was missing one of the Masonite pieces.  The one that makes up the floor inside the structure.  I know I could have contacted Bar Mills and asked them to send me one and they would have but I was on vacation and on a roll so I made my own.  I had a scrape piece of Masonite in the garage that would serve the purpose.  I used the roof piece to determine the correct width (including the tab) and cut a strip using my 30+ year old Craftsman Scroll Saw.  I think that was the first time I've ever used the guide it came with.   ;D  ;D  ;D  Then I marked where the ends should be and the tabs using the walls the tabs would go into.  It was interesting to say the least but I got it done with only a minor hiccup.

The minor hiccup was I forget to factor in the freight door openings.  I should have thought of them as giant tabs.   :D  No biggie.  If I leave the doors open, or partially open.  I'll install a board by board floor over the Masonite and cover the gap.  It'll look better than a Masonite floor anyway.

There are a bunch of little triangular pieces to brace the walls.  These were a little tough to cut out.  I ended up using a chisel blade in an X-Acto handle and kind of tapped on the handle with my other hand to drive the blade thought the connecting piece.

I used some Titebond II to glue the Masonite floor, ceiling and triangles in place and tried my best to keep everything square. I also glued on the end walls.

And there you have it.  The 'non' clapboard portion of the structure.

I painted the little exposed brick patches with some cheap craft store acrylics (Georgia Clay and Charcoal mix).

Then I used some Hunterline "Cement" weather mix for the mortar.  The walls are rather porous so they just sucked it right up.  The mortar is kind of dark as a result but I found I'm kind of liked the way it looks and left it as it.

I dabbed off any of the "Cement that got on the surface of the bricks with a paper towel.

I deviated from the instructions just a little bit when I painted the walls.  The instructions call for using a thick craft store acrylic rather than the runny kind and stippling it on the surface of the walls.  I used the runny kind but alternated between dipping my brush in the paint and then into some Durhams Rock Hard Water Putty I keep on the work bench.  The paint picks up the powder and as I work on the wall the two mix together and make a nice, textured paint.

Prior to gluing the chipboard roofs in place I applied 3M Transfer tape to the top.  I know the roofing material that comes with Bar Mills kits is peel and stick but I've found that it's not as sticky as I'd like and, over time, it tends to lift up.  So I'm hoping the 3M solves that problem.

I trim the 3M Transfer tape with a pair of Friskar Mico Shear scissors I keep on the work bench or with the old X-Acto.

Last picture for today and this one will bring you up to where I'm at right now.  The roofs are glued on leaving a 1/16" overhang on the front and side.  Well....I found if I put the lower end roof on with a 1/16" overhang on the end, like the instructions show, I'd have about a 1/16" gap where it should connect to the wall (where the pencil is pointing).  So I discarded that one and made a new roof 1/16" longer than the one that came with the kit.

That's all for now!  Thanks for following along!  :D

Looking good, Bob.

I thought this kit from Bar Mills looked like a real hit.  Very nearly bought one, but have so limited space left for large structures on my layout I just couldn't make it fit.  I thought this one would sell very well.  Enjoying your progress along with all your little tips!

Cheers, Mark.

Thanks for following along George!  I think the paint/water putty powder technique is really just a lazy mans way of getting texture on the walls.  Heck, the standard method is to mix the powder with water, stipple it on, let it dry and then paint it after it dries.  I figured why not just mix the powder with the paint and stipple it on.  I've done something similar in the past when painting sidewalks to give the paint just a tad bit of texture.  I just used a little less powder for the sidewalks.   ;)

I'm afraid it's all an optical illusion Curt.  ;D  Having the week before X-Mas off and the house to myself for the first four days allowed me to get a lot done in a short period.  Now it's back to earning a living so progress will slow down quite a bit.  :(  I figured that was like practice for retirement.  I think I'll be able to handle it.   ;D  ;D  ;D

Okay, time for an update.  I have been working on this one but I just haven't taken the time to upload pictures and update the thread.   :-[

There isn't a ton of strip wood with this one so I didn't bother getting out the little staining tub I usually use to soak it.  Instead I just brushed on some Hunterline Light Gray Weathering Mix.

To keep track of the different sizes of strip wood I sorted it by size, bundled it and labeled it using some blue painters tape.

Next up I removed the clapboard walls from their carrier sheets using a single edge razor blade.

Then I squared up the edges by running them over an emery board.  This is a habit I picked up from Tom (ACL1504) but it's also mentioned in the instructions.  The laser doesn't produce a perfect 90 degree cut.  It's close but off just a wee bit.

I applied bracing by running a small bead of glue down the bracing material first.

Then I spread it out with my finger tip.  I have a paper towel handy so I can immediately wipe off my finger tip after I do this so I don't transfer glue to the surface of the wall or anything else.

More in a moment... ;)

After I add the bracing to the walls I weigh them down for a few minutes until the glue grabs.  I have few marble blocks scavenged from old bowling trophies I use for this.

The bracing was squared up with one end of the wall and overhangs the other end.  I trim it to fit by flipping the wall over and cutting it with a single edge razor blade.

Once the walls have been braced I started finishing them.  First a coat of the Hunterline Light Gray Weathering Mix (being careful not to get any on the stucco finish lower wall section.

Next up I painted the clapboard walls with PollyScale Reefer White.  Normally I'd thin it a bit my dipping my brush in water then the paint but the last few bottle of PollyScale I bought were pretty darn thin to start with so I didn't bother doing that.

I then 'dry sponged' some Folk Art Dove Gray onto the walls.  It's really hard to see this light gray color on the white walls but it does make a difference.  It's supposed to represent places where the white paint peeled away and the primer beneath is showing.  I first dab the sponge in some paint and then on a piece of scrap paper to remove most of the paint.  I'm not trying to paint the walls with the sponge.  I'm just trying to speckle a little bit of paint onto the walls.

Then I repeated the 'dry sponging' with some Folk Art Khaki Tan to represent places where the wood was showing through the paint.

Next up I added some nail holes using a steel straight edge and a ponce wheel.

After the nail holes were added I beat up the walls a bit by lifting individual clapboards here and there by slipping a chisel blade beneath them and, in some cases, twisting it slightly to break a small piece loose or off entirely.

I cut out the big sign for the front wall a little bit oversized in preparation for distressing it.  A nice touch, the kit comes with two signs in case you mess one up.   ;)

I start by sanding the back of the sign to make the paper as thin as I can get it.  Be careful not to sand through it or tear it!

I used fine steel wool on the front of the sign, scrubbing from the top down, to take the edge of the black ink and lighten it up just a wee bit.

Jumping around (I'm doing a lot of that on this build) I next prepped the roofing material.  I first sprayed it with a rattle can paint (don't have the can handy right now that) that's a chalkboard black.  Then I used pan pastels to turn it gray.  More on this later when I apply the roofing material.

After installing the windows I tried using the precut glazing but found it didn't quite fit to my satisfaction and required a little trimming so I immediately aborted and used MicroScale Industries Kristal Klear for the glazing instead.  There are other glues (e.g. Canopy Glue) that can be used for this but I like working with the KK.  Working from the back just draw it across the opening to form a film.

I painted the back of the clapboard walls black with a cheap craft store acrylic.  I should have done that after I installed the bracing and before I did anything else but I forget.  Not a problem.  Just had to be a little more careful because the windows were already in place.  Next I added window shades made up of a sheet of printer paper painted light green on both sides and trimmed to fit over the window openings.

A little glue around the window opening first.

Then put the shade in place.  Vary the height from window to window a little bit.  No need for them all to be drawn exactly the same amount.

Back to the roofing material.  I cut the sheets into 9 scale foot lengths.  I'm experimenting a bit with the roof because I know where Tom plans on putting this structure (on the summit) the roofing material isn't going to be visible except to visitors who are 7+ feet tall.  :o  I applied 3M Transfer tape to the cardstock roof first even though the material include in the kit is peel and stick.  I've never found the 'stick' of the material included in some kits to be good in the long run.  I applied the strips in a pattern by offsetting the end seam each row by 1/2 of that of the adjoining row.

Pitch was then added to all the seams.  This is simply white glue mixed with PollyScale Grimy Black paint.

When I glued the walls together I had some joints where the stucco walls met.  I went back and stippled on more paint/Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty to cover up the joint.  I protected the brick patches and other things with Blue Painters tape while I was doing this.

After gluing the large sign to the front wall with a thinned out white glue I dry sponge some of the same cream color I used on the stucco walls over the large sign to age it a bit more.

Next I added the trim along the top of the walls.  This took a fair amount of time.  There are a couple of pieces of strip wood at the top of each wall and I mitered the corners for a clean fit.

More trim being added.

For the stucco walls one needs to cut a bunch of the these 3/32" inch square by 1/8" long pieces.  I used my NWSL chopper for this.

I used the strip wood I was cutting to clear the piece I just cut from underneath the blade.  I learned the hard way not to use my finger for this.   :P
(http://modelersforum.com/gallery/56-020220120227-428201149.jpeg)

These little pieces get glued into notches cut into the top of the stucco walls.  After they were glued in place I stained the ends and then touched them up with Reefer White followed by A&I to finish them.

That's all for today!  Thanks for following along.   :)

Just found this thread.  Wow; that is one great looking model...Masonite?  How did that work out?  Looks great; might have to get me one of those Cold Storage outfits

The Masonite worked well for bracing the main structure.  Only two negatives.  One piece was missing so, being impatient, I made a substitute myself.  I have no doubt what so ever had I contacted Bar Mills and ask for a replacement I would have gotten one ASAP but I had a big enough scrap of Masonite in the garage so I just cut one out myself.  The other negative, I discovered late in the build, came when drilled .018 holes in two places to install gooseneck lamps that light up.  Drilling through the Masonite took a bit of time/effort but I got it done.  Had I done a little planning up front I could have drilled a 1/4" hole in the Masonite in the location where I planned on installing the gooseneck lamps and then I would have only had to drill the .018 through the softer fiberboard walls.  Live and learn.   ;)

Time to wrap this thread up so I can start a new one.

I installed the fire escapes on the left hand wooden structure.  These are a neat detail.  The instructions mention they can be installed on either the left hand structure or the right hand structure.  I suppose that's true but considering the left hand structure has slots in the wall for the supports and the right had structure does not it would require extra work to install them anywhere other than shown.

After gluing the supports in place the fire escape landings were glued to the supports.

Next I glued the loading dock in place making sure to keep it square.  The loading dock comes in three pieces and I learned something when I went to add the second and third piece.

When I went to glue the second loading dock in place there was a noticeable gap between the first and second piece.  These are 'tab in slot' type assemblies.  Not wanting to get cited by OSHA for a safety hazard I had to take corrective action to close the gap.

I removed the first loading platform assembly that I had just glued in place.  Trimmed the tabs to so they'd be a bit shorter which would allow me to slide the platform a bit to the left and butt it up against the center platform.  I did the same with the platform on the other side of the center platform.  Problem solved.

Next up was the lower roofs that cover part of the loading docks.  There are peel and stick 'seams' that go on the roof.  I found I could quickly cut the batch out with a pair of micro shears.

More in a moment... ;)

Title: Re: Bar Mills Seckler's Cold Storage Background Flat for the A&S
Post by: ReadingBob on May 03, 2020, 11:24:30 AM
The roofs were finished and you can see the 'seams' in place and painted.  Next up came adding the brick supports to the loading platforms.  The spacing had to be determined by looking at the photo's.  The templates in in the instructions didn't really help.  I used 5 minute epoxy to glue on a couple at a time and put a piece of strip wood beneath them to ensure they were up tight against the platform until the glue set.  Any gap with the base, after the model is complete, will be covered with ground cover.  That'll be Tom's job.  ;)

Next I constructed the small, wooden, water tank that goes on the roof.  I made one major mistake with this.   :-[  I failed to read the instructions closely enough.  You first construct a core and then wrap it with a sheet of micro plywood like material that resembles board by board construction.  Well, I tried to wrap it an glue that sheet in place but it simply wasn't flexible enough.  I missed the part in the instructions where they mention breaking the sheet between each board to make it flexible enough to warp around the core.  I removed it and tried that but still wasn't happy with the results.  So I bought a piece of 7/8" dowel and cut a 1" long piece (same size as the original core).  Then I glued 2" x 6" strip wood around it and across the top to scratch build my own version of a tank the same size.  I used the original tank as a guide to drill holes in my new water tank where the bands (thread) would go.

Then I pushed some track spikes down into the holes to use as an anchor for the thread.  This side of the tank will face the back of the structure when installed and not seen.

The tank sits on a little support that's then glued onto the small roof top structure seen next to it in this picture.

At this point here's what the main structure looks like as well as the support structure for the other, this one metal, tank that will go on the roof.

Here's the structure before the lighting was installed.  I really need to make a backdrop for taking pictures on the kitchen counter.  :D(http://modelersforum.com/gallery/56-020520110120-440842097.jpeg)

To light her up I build a few boxes with lights that could be placed behind the walls.  These will prevent (I hope) light from bouncing off the wall the structure is placed against and unrealistically leaking out the sides.  You can barely see the fine wires that are attached to the goose neck lights installed in the front of the structure.  They're part of the circuit too.

Here they are, held in place with masking tape.  2/3 of the lighting has been completed at this point.

Bob,
What a fantastic job, (of course) as usual.  This is an awesome job, love the lights!  Tom will love this and many who visit will take lots of pictures.  Thanks for sharing.  Thanx Thom...

Thanks Thom!  Very much appreciate the kind words coming from someone who's spent so much time around the FSM.  That sets the bar pretty high.    ;)

Bob,

Holy Moly, what a beautiful build. I'm speechless, this is absolutely fantastic.  I'm curious though, do the Oreos come with the build?

Now, I really do owe you lunch forever. Thank you so very much for this build.

Tom  ;D

Sorry, the Oreo's don't require cold storage.   ;D ;D

You are certainly more than welcome.  Now I need to figure out a way to sneak it down your way and drop it off.   ;)

Bob,

No need to sneak, I'll be here this Saturday morning. Lunch on me.

Tom

Oreos are kosher.

Learned that from a Jewish friend when I was in the Army National Guard.  She kept kosher,  even in the field, and always had a bag of Oreos.  I said, "Can I convert?"  She replied, "You gotta get circumcised before you get any of THESE cookies."    ;D

I like the "depth" that the different colors present when you look at the building straight on. Great work

Thanks John!  I just matched, as closely as possible, the colors of the pilot model.  I wasn't sure about the different shades of white at first but the way it turned out I like it.

I just saw the build in person Bob and it's fabulous.  I can't believe how thin and smooth you got the stucco on the walls.

That had t be interesting how she kept kosher.  You're just lucky that she wasn't a mohel.

Thank you for the kind comment Curt!  :D

For this one I mixed the Durham's water putty with the paint and stippled it on the wall.  I figured why mix the water putty with water, stipple it on, let it dry and then paint it?  Why not kill two birds with one stone?  It was a relatively thin craft store acrylic.  Some come out of the bottle like toothpaste and need to be thinned with water.  Not this one.  It had a nice flow to it.  I just dipped my brush in the paint and then the water putty and mixed the to together directly on the wall as I stippled it on.  When it got too thick I'd just mix in more paint.  Not thick enough more water putty.  After a bit I found a nice consistency that seemed to work well and had at it.   :D
