Title: Cherokee Auto Parts
Post by: richbeau on July 23, 2019, 04:28:33 PM
I've been hanging around here for awhile (~2-1/2 years) without making many posts and just generally being a pest. I'm guessing I should contribute something. I'm a bit slow with all the things going on here at home. We're trying to sell the old homestead and downsize. So bear with my slowness. In any case here it goes...

Walker Evans photo - 1936, Atlanta, Georgia
Look familiar?

I always fancied scratch-building it but never got around to it when Frank Bernard (fbernard65 (http://www.modelersforum.com/index.php?action=profile;u=218)) pointed me to this...
(http://www.modelersforum.com/gallery/641-230719162109-3939986.jpeg) (https://branline-structures.com/shop?olsPage=products%2Fbranline-yorke-cherokee-parts-store-ho-scale)
It's an HO-scale resin kit designed by Thom Yorke and produced by Dennis Brandt (Branline Train Sales, Norfolk, Nebraska). If you click on the photo it will take you to the website. I don't have any affiliation though Frank did the signage.

I'm doing something a bit different... It's 18 years later (1954). It should still look pretty much the same as the original though the paint is a bit worn and not as much clutter. Well maybe it's just a different kind of messy. I'm thinking a little diorama (about 8"-10" square) - add sidewalks, a street, junk out back, some vehicles (probably my first ever Sylvan kit or three), etc

The kit arrived in the mail about a week ago. Give me a bit to clean up the pieces.

Hey there Rich, hope all is well with you ...
Looks like an interesting project there and looking forward to your interpretation from the 1950's ...

And good luck with your pending move and downsizing.   We recently went through a new build and move as well into what is planned to be our 'last' home ....
All the best,

Here's a glimpse at the major kit parts.
The castings definitely have some nice detail.

While cleaning the castings of flash I discovered that I'm missing a couple of pieces - a couple of rear walls and a window from the front wall. After messages back and forth I should have them on Friday.

In any case I primed the major walls.
I've decided to fill the hole in the front wall. Just won't work for me.  ::)
Instead of the missing kit window I used an old Grandt Line that looks more like the original.

With luck I'll have these walls painted if not complete before the missing parts arrive. The rear wall pieces will have to play catch-up.

A few weeks ago I went through a purge of my much too large collection of paint brushes. I still have a few sable brushes but acrylics tend to dry them out. I tossed 90% of the cheap ones. And because I'm hell-on-wheels I kept some - they make good dry brush tools. So most of the synthetics ended up in the barrel.

The other day these arrived...

So far I really like these. I'll probably 'need' to purchase a few more. 8)
--Rich

PS I should have a pic of three walls later today.

I use those angle shaders A LOT.  I have them in several different sizes, mostly sable/synthetic, but also some bristle.

I am fascinated with the 1936 photograph.  The "clutter" is too much to carry inside every night and place outside every morning.  I suspect the threat of thievery was lower in those days.  Today, anything not nailed down would be missing overnight.

Very interesting model.  It captures 1954 very well.

As a documentary photographer I have an affection for many Walker Evans' photos. This one is from a book by Evans called American Photographs.

And you're right about all that stuff hanging off the building. I'm probably not going to add the same kind, or amount of clutter, to the front. Maybe put that stuff (a bunch of it came with the kit) out back in a junk pile.

The front wall was primed with Rust-oleum Gray Primer. Then using a piece of dry sponge I dabbed Oil Ochre MIG Jimenez Ammo Paint. It's really thin so the primer bleeds through. After the yellow dried I dabbed some Vallejo Gris Marina to create gray splotches.

The two side walls were primed with Rust-oleum Camouflage. Then they were painted using a mix of  Americana DecoArt Neutral Gray and Mississippi Mud. In some places I let the primer bleed through. The metal patches were painted with shades of gray. I hit the walls with some black paint heavily diluted with water to deepen the wood look. I'll need to hit these with a dry-brushing of light gray paint, and add some signs. Maybe add a bit of rust using pigment to the metal pieces and some rain stain.

The missing rear wall pieces arrived. I'll prime those (along with the base) over the weekend. I've got a bathroom vanity countertop I need to cut and install. So we'll see how far I get.

I need to finish the office walls and put in some roof support. I'm not sure I want to finish the interior. Maybe I should make the roof removable. Then if I get the notion I could decorate the interior.

Thanks George. Layering the colors, deepening the shadows (A&I), dry brushing, and dusting with pigments (some folks use chalk) does really work wonders.

I will say that this particular resin kit is really well cast. It has a lot of detail. My copy had minimal resin casting imperfections. My only criticism (minor though), the walls are not easy to get square. Mainly due to the fact that the rear wall is three pieces. And maybe that just lends itself well to the worn aspect to the walls supporting the cool front wall. It's a really fun build. Many folks could probably put this together over a long weekend. It also would do quite well with some lighting and an interior for those so inclined.

Thanks for all the comments and encouragement.

The usual method - black paint & white glue applied with a tooth pick.

Note the 1950s garage doors and the office.

Next I need to get this down onto a piece of plywood. Then add some scenery, details, peeps, and vehicles.

Thanks so much...
Karl, George, Dave, Dennis, and Tom

My wife took me to Cape Cod (a.k.a The Beach) for a few days.
Here's what I left behind...
I know it's a weird angle photographically. My only excuse is I took it with my phone.  8)
The piece of plywood is about 12 square inches. There's some road and sidewalk work. I just placed the structure so you can see where I left it.

While away these arrived...
I'm hoping to build a few of these rather than the various stand-ins I normally use. Dan (Raymo), and his builds, have been most helpful. We'll see how many I can destroy.  :o

Thanks again for the kudos folks.

Karl
I'm updating this to 1954 (read the first post). So I'll probably use those details as part of the junk in the rear of the garage. Also the original front doors are now on the rear opening. The new front overhead door is a scratch-build which is more representative of the 1950s.
