Selling Kit... / FS: Two Bar Mills Kits
June 23, 2020, 08:15:53 AM
I've got two Bar Mills kits that I'll never build for sale...

Wicked Wanda's: Open box with everything in there. The box top is creased but if you're going to build it, probably doesn't matter. Sells for $65 on the Bar Mills site. I'd like to get $40 plus whatever it costs to ship it to you.

O'Doul's Flop House: Open box with everything in there. Sells for $68 on the Bar Mills site. I'd like to get $45 plus whatever it costs to ship it to you.

Kit Building / Cherokee Auto Parts
July 23, 2019, 04:28:33 PM
I've been hanging around here for awhile (~2-1/2 years) without making many posts and just generally being a pest. I'm guessing I should contribute something. I'm a bit slow with all the things going on here at home. We're trying to sell the old homestead and downsize. So bear with my slowness. In any case here it goes...

Walker Evans photo - 1936, Atlanta, Georgia
Look familiar?

I always fancied scratch-building it but never got around to it when Frank Bernard (fbernard65) pointed me to this...

It's an HO-scale resin kit designed by Thom Yorke and produced by Dennis Brandt (Branline Train Sales, Norfolk, Nebraska). If you click on the photo it will take you to the website. I don't have any affiliation though Frank did the signage.

I'm doing something a bit different... It's 18 years later (1954). It should still look pretty much the same as the original though the paint is a bit worn and not as much clutter. Well maybe it's just a different kind of messy. I'm thinking a little diorama (about 8"-10" square) - add sidewalks, a street, junk out back, some vehicles (probably my first ever Sylvan kit or three), etc

The kit arrived in the mail about a week ago. Give me a bit to clean up the pieces.

As a teenager while all my friends produced great chopped and channeled models, I was a miserable failure. It's 40+ years later...
Usually I buy assembled HO-scale vehicles but on a whim I thought I'd try working out of my comfort zone.
I just purchased my first Sylvan Scale Models 1937 Chevrolet Panel Truck Kit (V-036).
Any and all tips, tricks, or informative links are welcome.
Seriously at ground zero.

The Official F&SM Layout Thread! / Changes in Belverton
November 24, 2017, 05:38:28 PM
First there was a hole...

Then George patched it...

Now he's filled it...

Looks pretty neat. I got good photos of the diner and the small structure to the left. The new small Belverton station photos just &$#@%!  I'll have to get a better one  :-[

The Harbor Fish Market...

And there's the new Sisson's Diner...

I have more photos but I'll surprise you.  8)

I was speaking with George Sellios yesterday and he stated that the FS&M layout will be open Friday morning (9am-noon) the day after Thanksgiving (49 Main St, Peabody MA). Might be a nice escape  ;)  if want to stop by.    Pass the word.

PS rumor has it there's a couple of new items. And RMC is working towards a Feb/Mar publish date for a GS article.

Some of you might, maybe know this location.

As I stated in another thread I visited the F&SM for the last open house of the year. George has been busy adding some nifty little scenes and structures. There is one amazing diorama he's been working on - it's based upon this cover article...

It's a beauty!

The Official F&SM Layout Thread! / New FS&M structure
October 14, 2017, 06:54:08 PM
Visited George today and he's added an little scene to the layout. He asked me to type up a hand written note but I told him I'd just scan it. He said, "They don't want to see my chicken scratches!" I told him otherwise.  8)

In any case here's the scene...

BTW This is George's pick.

Here's another...

And here's George's description in his own words and hand writing.

Scratchbuilding / A Background Structure
July 31, 2017, 07:09:15 PM
This could be another one of those "What building is this?" structures in that maybe you can guess what this thing is based on. It won't be exactly the same but similar enough that folks should be able to recognize it at some point.

I mostly post on another forum but I've known Jimmy for awhile so I felt I needed to hang around here a bit. I've had the opportunity to take photos of many layouts, some well know, including The Pennsy.

I'm constructing a small layout and I'm in the process of putting together about 7-feet of background consisting of side-by-side buildings. Mostly you'll see the fronts and roofs. And most are scratch-built structures. There are a few instances of seriously bashed kits. Anyway, this one build will be just the front. The roof will be added later when it becomes wedged between two others.  Other than a strip on one side you won't see the rest.

Here's what I'm starting with...

A plan, some sticks of wood, some chipboard, windows, sand texture, and paint.

And away we go...

Scratchbuilding / A little structure combo...
July 16, 2017, 08:26:53 PM
I am a retired commercial photographer with a bad HO-scale MRR habit.  :D
I've been around awhile, though not here. I have created many structures for layout builders.
So just to give you an idea of what I've been up to lately here's a little piece I've been working on...

George has been at it, again.

Here's what the Bedford Falls corner looked like at the end of 2016...

From the "Franklin & South Manchester Railroad - 2016 - From the Air" thread (part 1 - page 72)

Here's what it looks like as of May 2017...

I was there yesterday (June 24, 2017). Saw a number of folks from the forum... the ever present Tom (tct855), Karl (postalkarl), Frank (fbernard65) and Dan (Raymo). Dave K. was there in the mix but unfortunately we did not shake hands (or my poor old brain doesn't remember it  :o).  BTW got to see Frank's exquisite version of I.M. Dunn.

Lastly after spending some time with George I'm thinking there's some pent up need to build something larger. Rather than just poke around on the 'old layout.' He definitely has 'the itch.'  8)
As someone else mentioned there's a small 4'-6' section where the casting equipment now resides that is a prime candidate. First he's got to find someone to purchase that gear (and the molds) so he can clear it out. There's also the area at the rear of the layout behind the Wolf Hollow to Dovertown stretch. It will be fun to see what happens.

Kit Building / FSM Mackenzie Milling Co question
April 25, 2017, 01:28:14 PM
Is there a build thread anywhere for Fine Scale Miniatures' Mackenzie Milling Co (#215) kit?

Mostly I'm wondering if it's possible to build it as a 'normal' structure. That is, not as the ramshackle, rundown building I see everywhere. I'm curious to see if anyone else may have done so.
