I suppose when starting on the second room part of my layout is a good time to start a thread on my layout here. If anyone not familiar with my layout wants to see more of it before this you can go to http://www.janbouli.com (http://www.janbouli.com) or http://kitforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=5114 (http://kitforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=5114)
My layout rooms are finally at a temperature to work in again.
Started with the LED lighting in the 2nd room, just experimenting how many strips of LED I need to have enough layout lighting and enough to take photographs without extra lighting.

What do you guys think? Myself , I am satisfied with this as layout lighting but think for photography I need 1 more strip.
I'd forgotten about your thread on the other forum Jan. I just checked it out and I really liked the way you were doing the landscaping, the grasses look terrific!
Please keep us up to date and more pictures are always welcome! ;D
Great to have a thread on your layout here - thanks for getting it started and I'm looking forward to watching your progress.
Hi,
nice to have you here with your fantastic layout. So keep the progress coming.
The LED strips are looking fine....I´ve only one strip and not two.....how much LED´s per Meter do you have on those strips?mine are 60/m and the color is coldwhite on must of them...
Cheers,Chris
Hi:
You're doing a great job on your layout. Looks like you've made a lot of progress in the development of the layout.
Have fun with it. :) ;)

The Athearn Challenger with Tsunami Sound is a great steam locomotive. I have six on the roster of the "new" JJJ&E. The Athearn "Big Boy" is also a fantastic steamer. Have fun programming the sound and running your new "Challenger".

Janbouli:
I've been working with Soundtraxx sound decoders in N scale for a long time Below are some CV values for the Equalizer that will enhance the sound performance of your 'Challenger" Soundtraxx decoder. You can also use these values in other N scale locomotives that that have Soundtraxx decoders.
CV 153= 7
CV 154= 0
CV 155= 0
CV 156=240
CV 157=200
CV 158=180
CV 159=120
CV 160=120
Have fun with it. ;) :)

Bob,
Will those CV values work in HO as well? Inquiring minds and all that.

Tom:
Those values should work in HO Soundtraxx sound decoders. I'm sure the HO Soundtraxx decoders have an equalizer. The difference in the sound will amaze you after you plug in those numbers.
Let me know how it works. BTW, you can modify those values slightly. Those values do work extremely well in N scale. ;) :)
Stay cool and run steam...... 8) 8)
Thanx Bob , will certainly try it.
My first youtube video , it's of an Athearn Challenger in N-scale comparing the sound of the Tsunami Decoder before and after programming equalizer CV's
I know this is a repeat, but I still watch and enjoy both forums!
This sounds so much better after programming the equalizer CV's! (like I know what the chit that means!)
I'm just lucky to build an old fashioned DC layout (well, work on it occasionally - but you boys are pushin'
my buttons lately!)
The "Challenger" sounds great after you programmed in those equalizer values Jan. ;)

This is what I plan for the upper deck in room 2, with the crossing at the station and an exchange between the UP and the Rock Island.

I don´t know if it´s difficult to wire it but it looks a bit complicated......
Cheers,Chris
Coming together nicely Janbouli!
Thanks , we're trying to figure out how we can get the depot a bit further away from the backdrop , we think either place the track somewhat inward or place the depot in one of the triangles and build a pedestrian bridge.

The station looks so impressive head on, I don't think it would look as good turned around on the other side of the track. As for wiring, you'll need a reverser for the inside of the 'Y'. Otherwise I don't think there are any wiring issues.

Thanks Jeff, I too think this is the best side of the station , so I'm leaning to just move it 2 inches inward, and of course I could still install a pedestrian bridge.
On top of the foam a 4mm layer of cork, saw and especially heard what cork can do to noise.

The real world is full of weird configuratations!!
A real world truth, though!! As soon as you change it, someone will send you a picture of a prototype! ;D ;D ;D ;D
There would have to be a reason to curve the track here. A natural object (water, rock) or a structure or structures that couldn't be moved. I think it looks OK, and with scenery in place will look much less noticeable.
Jeff
New situation after some rearrangements, I think it looks more natural now. Also added some buildings that I think will look good here.

Final trackplan of this section, now for my achilles heel , wiring , does it matter where I connect an autoreverser and does it matter where the track is isolated , what's better between the turnout and the curves or somewhere further in the curves.
I was told to make the feeders as close to the joint as possible (on both sides of joints) to ensure there was enough "juice" to make the reverser pop! You may recall my wiring problems went away immediately upon upgrading to a more powerful digitrax system.
good luck...it worked beautifully once I got it solved.
John
From the Dutch forum I understand that I only have to isolate one of those red tracks , and that part of track should be longer then any consist I put on thetracks.

Thats correct Jan. :) How long is either section marked in red?
Stay cool and run steam..... 8) 8)
Both are about the length of a piece of flextrack.
On Nscale.net soemone told me I could isolate the whole branch and hook that up to the AR, like this
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-w1EzwBG0JDo/VHuRuZLBYUI/AAAAAAAAHMM/2c8Gd44d1CE/s800/Jans%2520Wye%25203.jpg)
I'd put the whole tail of the wye (branch) on the AR too.
The AR is in place , on the left side of the wye the longer piece of track between the turnouts. All turnouts have cobalts underneath , feeder wires placed and everything works like a charm.
Smaller valance , 3 rows of LED's , and up goes the lighting. It is studded for the time being , tomorrow I will hang it up on the ceiling.
Plenty of light , but I mite end up adding a colored LED strip to be able to control the warmth of the lighting, of course if I do that I will have to do that with the entire layout.

Thanks Mark , the Hinkle Mill is a kit from American Model Builder , I think sold out in H0 but still available in N
Thanx Chris, some people think N-scale is good for people with small space to build a layout , I'm the kind that thinks N-scale is good to do vast scenery and long lines with enough space.
I must say since I have gotten to know some of the people on the Old forum ( most of them are here now ) and what they can do with H0 kits I have also gotten a liking for the detail that larger scales bring.
Because I feel I don't have the right backdrop for the Clay Center scenes, and I don't want to model a scene before the backdrop is done from now on , I decided I would place backdrops to those scenes I did make the mistake of modeling before the backdrop. This is the Riley scene , and the backdrop is imho perfect for this. Started on the right hand side.

Here is an excellent way to make concrete roads http://www.nscale.net/forums/content.php?153-Making-concrete-roads (http://www.nscale.net/forums/content.php?153-Making-concrete-roads)
Most people make asphalt roads using plaster or tile grout, google how to make model asphalt roads and you'll find toooooo many ways.
While I wait for some backdrops to arrive I will start on the next part of the layout , a bridge near Morganville and the Morganville grain elevators.
First scene in Morganville is a bridge over Mulberry Creek, not sure if it existed , but it is very plausible.
Benchwork adapted to a river scene. The bridge is a BLMA single track truss bridge , very lucky find on German Ebay , I won it for € 56,- , the going price for these when not sold out is 250 dollars. The WOW factor on this bridge is very high , it looks phenomenal.

It would be prototypical to place these "company houses" closer together. Often such lots provided 10' between houses, but on deeper lots with a little bit of room in the back for a garden or dog house.

Thanx for the info Dave, the next building in the row will be a railroad boarding house, that would be appropriate wouldn't it?
Thanx Gregory
Hi,
Great looking scene with the houses....Are they available in HO scale?

Thanx Chris , they have a few HO items but no structures. https://www.republiclocomotiveworks.com/shop.php (https://www.republiclocomotiveworks.com/shop.php)

Definitely! Detached houses for the married workers, and the boarding house for the bachelors. All on land owned by the railroad (and from the land grant if it's a western road.)dave
Something like this?
The railroad boarding house in Clay Center.

Several company houses and the boarding house along the tracks in Clay Center. These were owned by The Rock Island.

Now you need a bar and maybe a barbershop and/or pool hall.

Coming up.
The Ledbetters would be in hog heaven to live in one of them houses, but might kick the boys
out to live in the boarding house, and would definitely would need a bar/pool hall close by!!

I forgot fertilizer , is that a cr*ppy excuse ;)
Looks great Jan. Lots of development. That water tower is especially interesting. Thumbs up!
John
So this is what happened next, I gave the whole structure a wash of A & I and then glued on the tank, and put a weight on it to hold down the tank. But because of the A&I the glue of all the trestles weakened , so this is how I found the structure the next day.
So what to do , build the trestles again using the jigs or try to repair the trestles, I chose the latter.
And this is how it looks like after 2 days of repairing and patiently waiting.
I can only stand for a small amount of time , so I decided to do a small job on the Clay Center scene.
The front side of the tracks has several company houses and the railroad boarding house. To fit them in I cut out their floor plans , stuck the floor plans to the cork , then added several types of static grass . After it had dryed I removed the paper floor plans and I will now be gluing down the structures so that their foundations will look as if they are in the ground not above it. I will add paths and details later.

Jan, the grass around the foundations is nicely executed, but going back at least to the 1950s almost all US homeowners and landlords have been Slaves Of The Lawn. Except in arid areas, there will be at least a strip of mowed lawn on two or three sides of most houses. When I see grass as tall as you've got around the all-dark-gray house, it gives me an 'abandoned house' feeling.

Thank you , the dark gray house is hasn't been lived in for a few months , waiting for the next tenant, so I suppose it looks exactly as it should. The other grass is actually a bit high as well , but in N-scale static grass of 1/2 mm would be correct , but strange enough that wouldn't look realistic.
Hi Jan:

Thanks Tom and John , I did slip a couple of times John but luckily it still looked natural.
And Tom or anyone else if you do see something you don't like or would do otherwise please don't be afraid to tell me so. It's very hard to correct things and learn from mistakes if no one makes you aware of them.
Since you ask, I noticed bubbles in a couple of shots that show the new backdrop. Are they at risk of being visible when you've got the scenery & lighting the way you want them?

They are visible but not nearly as much as in the photo's , the shadows are more visible in the photo's. I only now saw that really big bubble , haven't checked that out after drying. The bubbles do go away some what after drying.
Thanks for the heads up.

The field in the last 3 photo's are 3 different static grasses from Polak. Built up from short to longer grass.

I'm pleased that you have joined the NMRA. We intend to make the British Convention really something.

Thanks Mike , I will be in England sooner then the convention but don't know when yet.

When you travel to England........... is there any way to avoid the chaos of Heathrow ? ? ?
I went through there last fall and they never told you which terminal might have your connection and they would not tell you the gate until about an hour before............. I need more lead time that that ! ! !

It depends where you're going. But try Birmingham or Manchester airports if you're going to the middle of England, or Glasgow or Edinburgh if you're going to the north or to Scotland. Continental at one time had service from Newark to Bristol, which was great for Wales and the West Country, but I think that was discontinued.
Heathrow is OK if you're going to London, because of the high speed train. It's a real pain for making connections.
dave
I think we flew from Gatwick on our way to Canada a few years ago , and when I fly to Schotland to play golf I fly to Edinburgh, the convention will probably be flying to Birmingham. I have many choices from nearby Dutch , German and Belgium airports, maybe I'll even drive there , but I don't fancy driving the wrong side of the road ;)

Driving on the wrong side was a bit disconcerting. Shifting with the wrong hand was tough. But what almost got me killed a couple of times was entering roundabouts/traffic circles from the wrong direction!

I'm not sure what you mean with light strips? The roof is peel and stick paper included in the kit.
On the roofing there are lighter horizontal red lines at the edges of the peel and stick roof materials. I'm not sure if it is the thin edge of the peel and stick material or just artifacts from taking the photos.

Ah , the peel and stick was white and I sprayed the roof from above , thanks for pointing this out Marty, I still have to weather the roof so I'll be sure to take care of that.

Yep , the building cost me about 4 dollars , but just one combine or a set of tractors costs 2 -3 times the the kit I used. Luckily rolling stock and engines are a lot cheaper in N-scale then in H0 , and structures are too but you need a lot more to fill a town or city scene.
I do like the way the building flats look--- nice coloring and layout of the structures. Is there anyway you could take a closer photo?
Finally did some work on the layout , inspired by Tom and his beautiful scenery, not as good as Tom's but practice makes .........
Just outside Clay Center the CC Elevator resides, I started working on the scenery for this part of the layout. First I filled the gap between backdrop and layout and built up a slope towards the fields using Plaster of Paris.

Belleville will be the last town on the Rock Island Clay Center Line, this scene is the outskirts of town with a river , mill , bridges and a small spur with the American Flag Co. Several images to give an impression of the scene.

Good looking layout you have going on there, more bridges the merrier.
Thank you Lynn, I have several bridges on my layout and there will be more.
On with the Belleville scenes.
Soil added.
First water poured.

More water poured and abutments made, the steel bridge is from Hack Brucken (https://www.hack-bruecken.de/)
Small wood bridge handmade , bought at Gangelter Modellbau Tagen.

Everything looks great. Just a comment on glue and staining. I have eliminated the issue of glue changing the way wood takes stain by assembling the project and then taking it in the paint booth and priming it with Khaki Camo paint. Then, I use chalks and paint pigments to do the staining. I should note that I still use the stain or color the wood first for board on board structure building. It all depends on the final look you want.

Thanks John, I normally am very careful with glue and I always have cotton swabs at hand. Oh and remember this whole bridge is less then 3 inches long.
I have already stained the bridge and I don't think there are any shiny spots , photo's later.
John has a very good point with priming first, I actually have started priming when I'm building laser cut pieces, hides the burnt wood look from the laser cuts.

Can't wait to see the wooden bridge stained. Great job on it as well.

In between those rails soldered on to the screws will be where I cut the rail with a Dremel , the soldered rail is the best way to keep the rails perfectly aligned .
Thanks Jan.i thought that but we know what assume means! :o
looking good Jan, and that should hold the rails just fine when you cut them lose.

Tom ;D
Had the day off today before I work 7 days , so I did some switch and track work.
Soldering wires to the DPDT switches for turnout control.
Cobalt switch machine installed. I use double sided tape to temporarily fix it to the layout , if the turnout works correctly I then screw the Cobalt, checking if it still works after 2 screws and the full 4.I prefer Cobalts over Tortoises because the wires are not soldered to the switch machine and are therefore easy to change if they make a short or are the wrong way around.
When I have to use other wire then the one in the box I use piano wire, which I let stick out quite a length, easier install then when the wire is exactly long enough , and it's easy to cut afterwards.
Very thin styrene with a slot in it for the wire so I can ballast right up to the wire.
My water filled milk jugs to weigh down the track while waiting for the caulk to set.

Wow , haven't done anything in this topic for so long.
Painted a few DPM/WS shop fronts , they will become Mainstreet Belleville. It will be a low relief backdrop.(http://janbouli.com/images/gebouwen/mainbel/mainbel1.jpg)

Choosing different sizes and different interiors for my shops.

Then I glue the whole to a piece of black polystyrene sheet.

Thanks Curt , Bob, Tom and Greg, much appreciated. Bob your interiors look great , but in N-scale it's hardly worth it , just too small , besides that , this row will only be 2cm , 3/4 of an inch deep.
OK............ you got me ! ! ! !
Either way this is very cool.

Very nice work. Love the interiors.
Thank you John, appreciate it.
To connect the 2 decks of my layout and the 2 yards I will be building a helix.
My helix will consist out of 8 pieces of 4mm thick plywood , that together form an octagon, much easier to saw then round pieces with almost no waste of wood.
Using the first piece as a jig I'm making 58 pieces to make 7 1/4 loops.
First loop with the ramp starting on the right side , each loop will climb 6,5 cm in about 260 cm of length making a gradient of 2,5% , with a radius of 16 inches , in total climbing 18 inches. Almost all my engines , except for maybe a UP Big Boy and Challenger should be able to cope with this.
The loops still missing a straight piece in between to connect them , after that is done I will begin with the risers.
Jan...
Understanding that N scale does not weigh much........ how far can a 4mm span go unsupported before you see some sagging?
Great stuff here.
Thanx
Bob
I will start by supporting it at every corner, and see if that sags or not , I've tried bending the 4mm ply and seems to me N-scale trains won't bend it at a length of about 30cm , remember an H0 engine is about 8 times the weight of an N-scale one. I think a bigger problem is actually that N-scale is so light , I'm hoping cars won't be pulled off of the track going up in a curve.
Jan I approve of your use of both cms and inches in describing your engineering feat. I will be watching with interest. Years ago my model club built a similar helix using metal bars to separate the levels.

Thanks Mike , I was a bit worried about that , it seems however quite logical to me to do lengths , heights and math in metric , but radius in inches on account of my tools for track being in inches and the forums I visit being mostly in inches . I have always wondered why anyone would want to calculate in imperial , metric , decimal is so much easier, but to each his own.
Interesting method;
Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Thanks for sharing.

The UK did not go metric until 1965. I had left school by then and had been taught only to think in Imperial. :) We still use miles, gallons and pints etc to this day...........

Did a little bit of work on my Helix this weekend , progress is slow because you can only do one layer at a time.
First loop built.
Ready to hold down track with caulk.
Second loop with track weighted down while drying.
Very nice Jan. Is it staying a single track?
Thanks Curt , yes it will be a single track , no need for a double track , I believe I won't be using it a whole lot anyway , but I like building things like this.
Jan,
Nice work with the Helix. I took me a few months to complete mine as you may remember. I too enjoyed the building process of the Ovalix.
Tom ;D
Still following along, looks good.
Thanks Tom and James , and yes I remember yours Tom , was a bit bigger then mine.
Well done Jan!

I'm half way now , so I tested this evening , my BLI PA with sound ran like a charm , on with the next loops .
Slowly but surely to the top.

Nice progress, Jan.
Cheers, Mark.

Thank you Karl , now for the 2 staging yards in the adjoining room , problem is I'm out of wood and the DIY stores are only Click & Collect at the moment , I like to stroll around in the store and see if I need anything else , plus I want to choose the wood myself.

Oh , that , lasted 2 days in a few cities , then speed law was administered , lots of arrests , and sentences up to 1 year were given for throwing a brick at the cops , looting ( someone got 3 months of jail for stealing a candy bar ) , people were arrested and convicted for encouraging riots on social media even if it was just for fun. And that ended it . Plus the fact that 99,99% of the Dutch people were openly showing video's and photo's of rioters , and mom's and dad's were handing their kids to the police.
We are a very tolerant people , and one of the most free countries in the world , but we're not going to tolerate a minority of hooligans think they can rule our country.
