Super Detailing / Phone Booth - The Art of Detail
January 26, 2022, 08:31:01 PM
Here is the next segment in "The Art of Detail".

It is about building our new phone booths in O scale, but more importantly, it is about the precise painting and application of glue when assembling small components.

Enjoy and I hope you can learn something from it to help your modeling.

New Structure Kits / Janbouli's Golf Tees in N Scale
December 05, 2021, 04:41:28 PM
Finally got this kit out the door. I don't know how it slipped by for so long.

Sorry Jan!

Named after a famous N Scale modeler who has a thing for golf here on the forum. Janbouli's comes with alternate signage (shown), dust extractor and air conditioner detail kits.

Janbouli's Golf Tees.... "Built one at a time since 1926!!"

It was a real building up in Edmonton on Boyle Street and rounds out our collection of Jacobs Welding, Boyle Street Apartments and Janbouli's.

New Structure Kits / "GENE" 40 ft Workboat in HO Scale
December 01, 2021, 02:33:39 PM
Well, not technically a structure, but the kit goes together like one.

The "GENE" is a 1912 West Coast work boat.  In 1912-1915 she was owned by Clarence Wakeley, Vancouver BC. In 1918-1921 she was owned by the Dolly Varden Shipping Co. Ltd., Victoria BC and operated near Alice Arm, BC. In 1926-1930 she was owned by Walter C. Hanson, Butedale BC. On July 10, 1930 she was destroyed by fire in Deep Cove, on the North Arm in Burrard Inlet, BC, Canada.

Bigger scale than most of us work in, but the techniques are the same...

Here is my new work bench I build a few weeks back. So far it is great!

It is built from a 36" hollow core door and the old side panel from my old desk. Then I added some left over drawer faces and cupboard doors for the back frame. The base is an electric powered sit/stand frame (3 legs). I can raise and lower the desk at the touch of a button from 28" all the way up to 5 feet!  With growing back and knee problems, this thing is a god send!  Now I can bring the model to me instead of hunching over the desk and always dropping things on the floor!

The Sorters are all custom laser cut to fit my personal needs like the xacto knife and paintbrush holder. This was inspired because of our cat Peanut. He likes to join me on my desk quite often and I was worried about him getting cut by my blades all over my desk. These are now recessed a bit into the stand and out of harms way.

I pop rivited the aluminum tubes together with some corner mending brackets and set 3 2 foot x 2 foot LED troffers on top (5000 lumins each, 5000K)  This casts zero shadows on my work and is easy on the eyes. The troffers were $120 for 5 units so the other two will go on the side table above the paint booth.

I bought 11 - 2 drawer units from ikea on sale for $8 each (Godmorgon) and also the three white metal and cork letter trays for storing work in progress.

Also, the black and white thingy with the cord in the 3rd picture is a test tube stirrer. Fantastic for mixing paints. No more shaking for 20 minutes to get that 4 year old paint going again. A few seconds on this and things are mixed again!

I have yet to set up my soldering station and microscope on the right side of the desk where the last to Godmorgon drawers are (around the vices) and add my microscope, but am pretty happy with the layout and organization.  Joanna has a bet on about how long it will stay organized, but we will try!

I can't speak highly enough about the sit stand thing. I should have done this years ago. Especially if you are spending lots of time at the modeling bench!

I thought this was a great video on some structures painting techniques from the military modelers world.

Some really great methods and great video shots of the process.

PS, was not sure what category to put this under.

Now here is something you don't see every day.

In 1930 they rotated the Indiana Bell Building to make more room for a new building....
...while people were working in it!

Ever wonder how they constructed those stone bridges before the day of steam?
Must have been an army of masons...

Smell that fresh air and listen to the relaxing sounds of birds chirping and the waves lapping against the shore. This cozy cabin is typical of memories from lake visits all over North America, and prototypical especially to mountain lakes and river retreats, lodges and rental cabins from the 1950's to present day. In particular, this cabin was inspired by Joanna's childhood memories of her families' cabin (the "middle" cabin as the Mullen family knew it) on the Shuswap Lake in BC, Canada.[/size]This kit comes loaded with detail. Full interior (wood stove, couch, chairs, loft, stairs, bed, kitchen cabinets, stove top, fridge and even the kitchen sink!), micro LED interior lighting, deck chairs, lawn chair and 3D printed propane BBQ, beach ball, float toy, air mattress and beer cooler. We have even included the flower boxes ready for you to plant your favorite flowers and herbs.

Vehicle Modeling / CR LAMB...one more time in O Scale!
January 02, 2021, 09:35:53 PM
Thought I would share our latest kit that is finally in the production stage. We pulled out all the stops on this one and it has been a monumental undertaking! I think this is the final version after doing it in HO and N Scale! I Kind of feel like Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind!  He feels compelled to keep creating models of Devils Peak, but don't know why when it is driving him crazy!!

Anyways here is a few photos of the kit prototype model in 1:48...

Not quite sure where to post this, but Jeff's technique for making aged concrete roads is fantastic. Would be great for eroded walls / retaining walls as well.

He has some other great weathering videos as well.

Cheers!

Super Detailing / Pandemic Hoarders Shipment
June 22, 2020, 11:47:22 PM
Too Soon??

Get your railroad ready to survive the next pandemic. The hoarders shipment has everything you need to operate in a lockdown situation. Masks, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, mac and cheese, along with a weapons shipment to ward off any zombie attacks that should occur. Lastly if all else fails, just open the Ark and evaporate your enemies and viruses all at once!

This was a fun kit that I had to do up to highlight one of the most unusual events in our lives. (hopefully only once!)

Cheers!

This was a fun one to put together.  Something you see everywhere, but have never seen a kit produced in HO Scale. Fits every layout set in the past 30 years.

Kit Building / Moonshiner's Cabin in HO
October 28, 2019, 06:34:40 PM
Here is the new Moonshiners Cabin Kit in HO Scale with an optional motorized Rocking Chair Animation and interior detailing kit. This one was a lot of fun figuring out.

The cabin is based on the Cabin that was in the Untouchables Movie with Kevin Costner and Sean Connery. It is from the scene where the Untouchables stake out Capones Canadian Whiskey Deal at the bridge. I have tried to keep the same layout of the interior and furniture!

It includes corrugating tooling so that you can make your own scale corrugated metal roofing with supplied self adhesive foil tape.

Here is a video of rocking chair animation:
