Title: MORRISTOWN & ERIE RAILROAD - WESTERN DIVISION - PART THREE
Post by: Erieman on March 17, 2020, 11:31:48 AM
i have decided to start a new thread on my railroad. This portion will cover the large city area at the end of the layout. The cities are is located where the layout starts and ends. The layout is a double dogbone at one end. I'll post a pic of the layout design that appeared in 2019 Great Model Railroads issue. More to follow over the next several months or more.

The city are consists of many large structures constructed from kits from City Classics, DPM and others. Several are being re arranges to fit the location, many need window glazing, fire escapes ,etc to complete the structures. Many of these builds were build several years ago without consideration to a formal location on the layout. Now they may be modified to fit a specific location.

So follow along on the continuation of my layout journey.

Frank,
Try taking 2 photos to post with your phone or tablet, take one holding your device in a vertical position and then take one holding it in a horizontal position, post the 2 photos, see if they are both upside down or if one is correct, etc. If both are bad, it is a software issue , if it works one way of holding your device, then jump up and down ...

Sorry for the progress delay on my layout progress. I have been plagued with photo inversion with the photos from my phone. During a conversation with John Siekirk this morning, he recommended that i go back to photos using my camera.

Over the past twenty or so years, i have rearranged the city of "The Oranges" several times. Recently as i near the end of the layout, i have modified the cityscape once more. This time i have added an elevated highway thru the city. The highway is almost 14 feet long, comprising of three segments. I will be adding structure beneath the highway as well adjacent to the elevated highway. There is lots of cutting and gluing of styrene structure to make this all happen. I have also cut one large building to let the highway pass thru the building. Let me know your thoughts.

The photos are displaying correctly - I don't have to turn my computer around to look at them and they zoom properly - The new area looks great.

If these are with your old camera then I think we have found the problem. Cell phone cameras were the best on my last version of my phone.  Now they are trying to do too much for us and screwing up the photos. I don't like what my iPhone 8 does to the colors and it's worthless to see if things are straight - like looking through a fisheye lens. As I told you during our phone conversation I'm going to get my old SLR out for my model evaluation pictures.

Can you still get into the build that the highway passes through?  Some interior lighting and interior detail would look great.  Just a thought - if you can access the area anymore.

Post by: Erieman on May 11, 2020, 11:00:06 PM
Each day i try to make more progress on the cityscape. This is large area of about 7 ft. x 16 ft.. A portion of the city scape has been completed for quites some time. Most of the structures in the completed area are single story buildings, mostly kits or scratchbuilt structures. The rest of the cityscape  will be multistory buildings, an elevated highway thru the town. I have been attempting to break this large area into smaller, more manageable area, to allow me to compose, arrange and detail each portion of the cityscape. Easier said than done, but i am working on it. Here is a series of photos showing an aerial view. The Aerial view allows you to conceptualize buildings within this space. The additional photos show modified buildings of cardstock or plastic, which allow me to select, add or rearrange the  structures within the location.
I have started along the back wall, working forward. This requires the use of the topside creeper to get access to many of the buildings. While the creeper aids in accessing the area, it is difficult on the body. You can withstand just so much of reaching across the layout. I guess i should have planned better, but it i too late now. So-o-o. i spend quite some time on the creeper.

Enjoy the pics. I will be posting progressive photos as i proceed with this journey.

Vince,

Thank you for your kind words. You are right. I used Rix Early Railings for the guard railings. Now you asked how did i bend them. Actually my first attempt was a disaster. I used a propane torch and you can guess what happened. After putting out the small blaze ( actually it just lights up and totally warps) i looked for another option. If you look close to the inside of the guard rail, you will see notches. I took the railing and cut notches with my band saw on 1/16 increments at the base of the part to allow it to bend. Voila, it worked perfectly. A bit of putty and it looks like new. The elevated highway is a bit over 14 feet long, not including the intersecting bridge road.

I purchased sheet styrene for the road and cut the curve as i desired, then glued on the guard railings. Some grey primer and viola, it was done. Installing it on the layout was another challenge. As i mentioned, thank heaven for the topside creeper. The elevated roadway was built in three sections, so installing it was a "bit" easier. The section that is shown in the photograph is installed. The section to the right of the yellow building is only installed " temporarily". The support system for this portion of the roadway is different. I'll take some pics today and post tonight. Thanks for stopping by.

Tom,

Thank you for your kind words. Progress is slow, but steady. Here are a couple of new pics. The overall view give you a feel for size and scope of the city. A lot of the structures are just placed there and need detailing and painting. I continue to move things to get to a place where i think everything is where it should be. Sometimes I work on the right side and sometimes on the left. Even the small areas get detailed. The second pic shows the MW storage track with equipment and junk. Lots of junk and ties. That area still needs more stuff. Well, back to the layout. Have a great day.

Super nice, Frank. So many excellent features. Congested city scene, a peninsula without the need for a backdrop, great backdrop on the walls, craftsman kits (I at least recognize the SRMW Tucker & Cook), truss bridges, major industry (steel), hiding the sharp-radius turnback curve underground for the peninsula, and more. Excellent, excellent, job. Really top notch. Also gives me a couple of ideas I can leverage for my own layout. Thx.

Vince,

Thank you for your kind words. There are currently three SRMW kits in the photo ( Tucker & Cook, Streeters and Blackstone, a fourth ( Currier & Son ) will be added near the base of the bridge and three scratch built structures in the foreground. There will be additional structures along the backdrop going to the left in the photo. These will hide the tracks in this area. The track in the foreground is a point to point trolley line. So much to see and even more to complete.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Her are a couple of photos of the steel mill blast furnace. Still under construction is the material bins that will be installed behind the blast furnace. The first material i used for the bins was mdf, but it turned out to be quite heavy. I bring this up because there are three levels of track below the material storage bin. All the area behind the blast furnace at the upper level needs to be removal to gain access to those three levels of hidden track. Mt second attempt to make the storage bins lighter was thru the use of foam board. That worked, but had a tendency to warp/ They were indeed light/ Hmmmn what next. I purchased some large sheets of styrene. I have yet to construct the bins, but i believe i will get the strength and rigidity that I need. More about that in a future post.

The blast furnace is the only structure 95% complete. I have included internal and external photos. The casting floor has a brilliant red clay in the casting runners. The crane has operating red warning lights and overhead lamps illuminating the casting floor. All around the other portion of the structure are illuminated catwalks.

The conveyor from the storage bins to the blast furnace is complete, but not yet installed because of the continued work on the material storage area.

Next to the blast furnace will be the open hearth furnace. I have quite a bit material collected for the construction of the open hearth along with drawings of the furnace. Just need a bit of time.    Stay tuned.

Thank you for stopping by. I thought you might want to see some pics from the other side of this scene. To the left of the bridge overpass in the top photo will be another SMRW complex/ I have started Currier & Son bldgs, as you can see in the cardstock templates. As  mentioned, this cityscape will have many, many buildings that have yet to appear on the layout. The back wall will have many building covering the tracks below. Details on all this are still being worked out so stay tuned.

You can also look back at the earlier post on this layout. You can find it in Layout tours. A side note. Toms River, New Jersey. I used to have family there many years ago. Good Morning All,

Progress is slow but ongoing. Here are a couple of new photos of the overall area along with an almost finished photo of the MW storage area. I have started a SRMW Currier & Sons. Lots of interruptions makes the build quite difficult. The good news is that it is going to get hot in the next couple of days, and i'm going to be in the train room, not working on the yard. Summer appears to be here in Arizona. Once must do any yard work very early otherwise the heat will get you.

The only good news is that our tomato garden is producing. Now i'm not a tomato fan, but my wife, neighbors and grandchildren are, so i tend and pick the garden. The plants are about four feet tall and very prolific. We probably have a couple more weeks of picking before the heat really does a job on the plants. I just water then and pick them.

Have a safe Memorial weekend and remember - play with trains.

Tom,

Thanks for your kind words. I had a bit of a mishap today. I was looking at placing a large building (nine stories) somewhere at the back of the layout to potentially hide track and give the impression that the cityscape continued beyond the background. I put the building down on the layout after looking it in a potential location. After a few minutes , i picked the structure up and proceeded to move it to another location. Well this building is about 16 inches tall and has a bit of weight to it. Moving it to the right, i completely forgot about the raised bridge and highway. You guessed it. WAM. Things fell down and a few expletives were muttered. After a quick review, everything that moved was able to be put into its original position. Whew. Needless to say, i need to be a bit more careful when moving large objects around the layout. I can thankfully say that I can't remember ever doing this before. ( That does not include any prior memory losses. It has been over 26 years that I have been working on this monster). My motto is now - look before you move anything!!! And NO, I did not take any photographic evidence of the mishap.

Good Day All.
As many of you know, Summer has arrived here in Arizona. We are now in triple digit temperatures. It is currently 93 degrees going to a high of 106. Dry heat or not, 106 is a bit too warm to be outside. So-o-o, here i am in the train room!!! Over the past week i have been working on SRMW Currier & Son. The building is a bit larger that the original kit. I found a couple of two story walls in my stash that were left over from a prior SRMW kit. So i have added onto this structure. I have posted a building pic on the work bench and one on the layout. I will post more pics as the scene develops. The building on the right side of the street is a Downtown Deco built by a friend here in town. There is another building that Don built for me. He was getting bored by the covid restrictions, so i gave him a FOS building "Rankins Steak House" to build. After a few touch up details by me, the building will reside on the layout in close proximity to SRMW Currier & Son.
With the hot weather, work on the layout hould proceed with dispatch. Too hot after about 9 am.

Good Day Mark,

A pleasure to hear from you. Hope a is well in kiwi land. As a side note, one of my favorite movies was made there, or at lest a part of it. "The World's Fastest Indian" with Anthony Hopkins. Probably have seen the movie 20 plus times.
As i told Greg, this structure, because of its proximity to the viewer, will get a great amount of detail. I have digging thru my parts drawer (s) and have a large selection of components to add. More pics later in the week.
Thanks again for stopping by.

Hi Frank.

My father used to go and watch Burt Munro do his test runs down the tram road between the Waimakariri river and Oxford.  Apparently, he used to drive up from Invercargill (some 7 hours drive), do a couple of test runs, put the bike back on the trailer, and drive back home.

Cheers, Mark.

Okay, the Currier & Son has made some progress today. The shingle and tar paper roofs are complete and a chimney has been added to the shingle roof structure. There are also many cast metal pieces that have been filed and primed. Several more cast pieces need to be completed. I have fire escape steps that need final assembly and painting. There are many cast roof vents and dust collectors that are also being assembled. Tomorrow i will install the signage. There are probably more items to install, but that is all I can remember at this time.

The overall photo has a white foam board  piece sitting on the layout. That is a template of a future building. I have several City Classics buildings on the layout. This building will be an assembly of the Tiles buildings. I have taken many of the fronts and turned them into several panels of nine story panels. I will added some additional foam panels to the white base to simulate the basic structure. Once that is completed and I like it, i will integrate the actual panels into the final structure. I'll be working on and off on this structure over the next couple weeks. There is a lot of tunnel action with this building as you can see.

That's the progress for today.

Thanks Karl,

While i am working on Currier & Son, I have been thinking about the rest of the area in the photo. I think the big building over three sets of tracks will be a challenge, but exciting. Hope to have a white model of this area late this week. I hope that happens. With the hot weather settling in for the summer, i have pretty good chance. There are our dog days. Good Morning Tom et. all,

Spent quite a bit of time yesterday working on Currier & Son. I added the water tower and fire escape. The chimney is different than the one provided. The fire escape and water tower were a bot time consuming, but the end result is good. The stone foundation was also completely painted around the entire structure. Hopefully the extra windows show up tomorrow, then i can complete that portion of the build.

I may start building two tomorrow, depending on how much the wife wants done around the house. The temperature is going to be a lot lower tomorrow and Sunday, so the second building might be early next week. Happy wife - Happy life !

Tom, After looking at the model, I realized that the circus billboard was hidden by the fire escape. This would have never happened, unless the fire escape was added later. SO-o-o, I carefully removed the fire escape, cleaned up the glue and re glued it to the boarded up window opening to the right. I hope this looks better. I have been adding the soffits on the wooden structure. I had a little scare as i was moving the structure around. Apparently, one of the small plaster pieces between the wooden structure and main building was not secured properly. So, before it met the floor, i spread out my big mitts and caught everything. Once the problem was diagnosed, i spread a generous quantity of Elmers yellow glue in the correct corners. Problem solved.

I'll post the revised photo in a bit.

Looking really good, Frank.

It looks like nice fine detail in the tank support framework.

Yes - I have seen the movie and enjoyed it.  I think Anthony Hopkins did a pretty reasonable job of the New Zealand accent (most actors don't).  Southland has arguably the only regional accent in NZ - the quite distinctive rolling 'R'.

Cheers, Mark.

As i mentioned earlier, the fire escape was installed in the wrong location. If you look close to the older photos, the fire escape was over the billboard and that just would not happen. It bugged me enough to remove the fire escape and move it slightly to the right over the walled in window. Much better!

Good Afternoon James,

I have been away from the forum for quite some time. It is good to hear from familiar folks. Regarding the next GMR article, I still have a few more years of construction to go. "Finish" is a big word that i am not going to use, because you are never finished, it the railroad sense anyway. Lou Sassi continues to ask when he can come out again to photo the layout. My guess is another year or two. There is still a lot of scenery in this area to complete and another building in the steel mill complex.
So in the meantime, thank you for stopping by . Glad you are enjoying the build.

Tommy,

I have a stable of colors, many of which i purchased years ago. In many of the early SRMW kits, Bob recommended several colors/ manufacturers, many of which i used and continue to use. These are nice colors that represent New England, in my humble opinion. There are some others that i have added to my stable. There are several manufacturers of specific colors that are in my library.

Would you like to know what they are? and what type of materials ie wood, brick, stone, etc, they are used for?

There is no way to guess that dry brushing this build with a fan brush was your choice of applying the base color.

Tommy,

I have several acrylic colors that i like to use including: Delta Charcoal gris anthracite carbon#02436, Terra Cotta 02071;Folk Art Greenscape, Linen, Italian Sage, Dove Grey and Barnwood Red; Apple Barrel  Lemon Chiffon, Sandstone, Americana  Hertiage Brick, Georgia Clay, Slate Green, Warm White, Slate Grey, Uniform Blue.

These are a few of the colors that i use. Hope that this helps. And of course, as Dave says, white and black, but that is quite boring, in my humble opinion.

Good evening all or good morning to the folks on the East Coast,

A little bit of history and help for Tommy Boyd. In the old days when most modelers paint as supplied by Floquil, I used grimy black for the roofing tar paper color. I have been hard pressed to find a suitable replacement in acrylics. Wait no more. Delta Acrylic paints called Ceramcoat has an exact duplicate color, based on my humble eyes. The color is called Charcoal Gris Anthracite carbon #02436. Once it dries, it looks identical.

Both of the Currier & Son buildings have tar paper roofs. Photo one shows a piece of kraft paper with the application of the Delta paint. Photo two shows the paint dried and rough sanded to give the impression of wear. Give it a try. i highly recommend the color. Don't forget to use 80 grit sand paper to rough it up.

Now here is the progress on Currier & Son. Both buildings are quite far along in the assembly process as you can see from the attached photos. The small building is quite a ways along. Still to be assembled is the porch, stairs and signage.
The large building had a couple of platforms to build. rafter tails and bracing, finish painting and lots of cast parts everywhere. And of course, those that have followed my build of other SRMW kits, there are the birds and bird poop. Many of my local friends  kid me about the bird poop, but that is an integral part of the scene.

It will probably be another week before i post any pics of the finished model. All those little parts take a long time to paint and rust. In the meantime, enjoy the photos below.

As many of you know, my wife has been helping me with my railroad. Almost 40 years ago, she asked if she could help. We were at a national train show in California at the time of the inquiry. I said sure, how about painting people? She agreed and i purchased her 18 boxes of unpainted Preiser people. Now that's a lot of people considering 100 plus people per box.
Recently, she has asked about painting some of the plastic buildings that i have assembled. Now that's a big step. So starting with a small building, here you go. She still has to paint the "DRUG" sign. Now i won't kid you, she had a lot of help from yours truly, but she is learning. I guess i'll keep her!!!

She has been painting people for almost 30 years. She has gotten very good at and even holds clinics at the regional NMRA Conventions. The only problem is that she sometimes gives them away. Now that I am working on the city area, i think I will have to buy her a couple more boxes!!!

Well, Currier & Son is done. Well almost. A few details then install. I used a structure mounting system many years ago and have decided to use it again. I cut a very thick piece of cardstock the size of the building footprint. I determine the final location, mark the location and then glue the cardstock base to the layout. Fill in all the scenery, ground cover, etc around the cardstock base, then put the structure on top. I may use some double sided tape to adhere it to the cardstock base. My earlier buildings were not adhered to the based. The advantages are many. The building can be easily remove, lighting added, etc... Most of my building are permanently affixed to a foam base. This makes any subsequent work almost impossible.

Anyway, here are the pics.

Thank you for your comment. Progress is slow. Working on the building sub structure (cardstock mounting surfaces and surrounding earth) and then will install all the junk, greenery, etc... More soon.

I have been working on one of the final elements to attaining my MMR. I have been building a curved crossing from scratch. I need to cut the gaps, wire the crossing and demonstrate the functionality. The last portion of my MMR categories will be officer. I will have completed my officer requirements by mid September and receive my final certificate, then my MMR. Whew. Another dust bunny to hang on the wall !

In the meantime, i continue to work on the layout. Lots of city details to be completed. Slowly but surely they are getting done.

The scene is slowly filling in. Currier & Son is almost complete with just a few details remaining. Several of the other buildings will also need a great amount of detailing, the road needs to continue across the tracks, there will be a large crossing signal after some potential repair, filling of stone walls along the elevated track and so much more. There a some buildings in the background that will need to be completed before the front structures are finally placed and wired with LED lighting. I'm getting tired just thinking about what needs to be completed. In the meantime, here are several status photos of the current look. Enjoy.

Good Morning All. Thanks to everyone that stopped by during my last post. Continuing to work on the cityscape. I decided to added a spur below the elevated line. I found a curved left hand switch in my box of track parts. I still need to cut the existing track to add the switch, switch machine, etc...The elevated line had to be modified, which meant digging the parts box to find a few more truss parts. The original elevated line was built several. no many years ago. It was spray painted with Floquil green in a rattle can. Well, you know about that product. More digging and i found a small bottle of floquil green that matched the right color. WHEW!!!! I still need to cut the switch location, bore  hole for the throw rod and put it in the right place. The REA building is another story. It has sat under the layout with only three sides assembled. I found two boxes of parts for the same building and after a few hours / days, the building is complete. Well almost, i still need to add a platform to the trackside of the building. This part of the cityscape is coming together, so stay tuned.

The tracks under the elevated structure remind me of a scene in Cambridge, MA where B&M industrial spurs served a warehouse under an elevated trolley line. Alas, the trolley line was the last survivor and it was removed earlier this year.

I didn't know you'd worked in Boston.  There were two parallel spurs under the Lechmere Viaduct on the Green Line, next to (I think) Cambridge St.  They stand out in my memory particularly because Erewhon Trading Co., an early natural foods business, had their warehouse next to the viaduct in the 1970s.  They received leased airslide covered hoppers of grain on the spurs.  A quick search doesn't turn up a photo of the brown/white lettering paint job, but I will ask other B&M modelers.

Tom,

The elevated track is a total of 10 feet long. it is broken into three power zones that will be controlled by a small computer. The trolley will idle in station one for a set period of time, the accelerate to zone two. Upon reaching zone three, the trolley will slow down, stopping at the opposite station. I had considered extending the line, but shelved it. I am working on filling in the open spaces with lots of other structures. I think i am closing on 300 structures on the layout. Hard to believe.

Good Afternoon Judge,

The pulpwood load is scratch. I have a couple of palo verde trees in out yard. When the branch dies you get a beautiful looking series of dead branches. Most are grey, but several look more like a birch bark tree. After several dead branches and many times with the band saw, i had enough pieces to glue up a load. i used Elmers white glue to put every thing together. At a quick glance it looks like trees harvested from the woods of Maine. Glad you enjoyed the video / layout and pulp car.
You guys need to make a journey out here to see it in person.

Jeff

Good Morning Jeff,

Thank you for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed the video. Depending where on the hillside you are referring to, most of the surfaces start with an application of static grass. The small foliage is Woodland Scenics Foliage that I break into small, medium and large chunks and glue into place. This is the most tedious part of the scenery. As an example, in four hours you might complete about 2 sq. feet or less. Much less if you have to reach long distances that occur on my layout. On top of the base foliage, i may scatter smaller pieces of foliage clumps, clusters or pieces. I work with light medium and dark foliage colors to break up the potential visual boredom. Since dust is omni present, i occasionally spray a fine mist on the ground cover to brighten everything up.

Hope that is of some help. If not , feel free to call me and we can discuss this in greater detail.

Good Evening All,

Progress on the layout is slow but steady. Lots of little details on both side of the island. The elevated trolley station continues to grow. I have had the elevated track and bridgework for quite some time. I decided to  make some change to the trolley station in East Orange. They say that pictures say a thousand words, so i'll be brief, because the pictures say everything. The ticket office is completely detailed. I have ordered some more LED's to light up the interior. The roof will be removable so you can see even more detail versus looking in the windows or skylight. Enjoy the pics. The track is just sitting down on the structure for the moment.

Karl, Thank you for your kind words. We all know that the devil is in the details. The station platform is fairly close to the edge of the layout so i wanted to detail it as much as possible. Glad you enjoyed it.

Good Morning Bob,

Been side tracked with another water leak in the front yard. After digging for about four hours over the last two days, i have found the leak. Working in 100 plus degrees is no fun. I dig a little, then cool down, then get back at it. I finally found the pipe (s) and still need to dig around then to make a final judgement on which pipe is leaking. Then its cut, glue and fit and test. Put three feet deep of dirt back will be last. Its sort an half hour on and hour off.

Glad you enjoy the trolley station. Hope to have it up and operational in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks Dave. This project appears to be getting bigger. When i got to the bottom of the hole, i found three pipes, not one. To make matter worse, they are REAL close together. More later. Thanks for the encouragement.

I participated in a ZOOM meeting last Saturday. I had the pleasure of showing my layout. So open the link and go to the 25 minute mark. You can start it there and it ends at the one hour mark. Enjoy the pics.

Duffy's tire is a poor man's knockoff of the SRMW kit you mentioned. I saw this structure on Bob's layout many years ago and came home and made my design.

Good Afternoon All,

I received my December issue of Model Railroader yesterday. To my surprise, there is a picture of my layout in Trackside Photos that i submitted earlier in the year. Page 67. This is my last issue. MR has gone down hill over the past year and i have decided to take RMC. My sister-in-law gives a yearly subscription to a train magazine of my choice. Let's see how RMC does. RMC was the first magazine that i was published in many, many years go with a different layout. Just my humble opinion.

I noticed the latest RMC has more pages than MR.  That's a change from how it used to be.

MR should change its name to "modern railroads", there's rarely stuff of interest for me...

Congratulations on the photo.  I continue to subscribe to MR, but when they offered a gift of a year's subscriptions with my renewal, I don't have grandchildren so offered it to my division members.  None took me up on it.

i have automated the trolley line. It runs from point to point waiting in the station for a few minutes and then returns travel to the station at the other end. I am looking for a sound effect  - a trolley bell sound that i can install at both stations. just a basic ding-ding bell. Anyone come across anything like this? any info would be helpful.

Coming up to speed, i purchased two trolley sound boards / speakers. The speakers have been installed. One speaker is below the station on the elevated platform. The other speaker is in the Army Navy store adjacent to the other station. I removed a door and installed the speaker. The speaker is not visable from the aisle, however the speaker location will allow the trolley bell sound to revirberate off the adjecent wall, or so it says here, somewhere. Installation of the electronics to make the sound is pending. I'll take a video and post it when it is done.

In the meantime, i have been working on the Electric Furnace structure. It is 3 1/2 feet long. The basic structure is done. Metal roofing is partially complete. Several electric ovens have been built and installed in the interior of the building. I'll take some pics soom. I have also been working on the backdrop rea behind these structures. Pics soon.

Good Morning All,

Several house projects have kept me away from the forum. I graze, but have not had the time to post. The house projects have taken priority for the past couple of months. I graze the forum from time to time.

Last week i recieved official notice that i completed my MMR #683 ( master model railroader ) certification from the NMRA. This has been a long journey, but a fun one. Another placque to hang on the wall. This is a fun hobby. You meet a lot of wonderful and talented people. Of course there are many great modelers on the forum.

Hope everone has a wwonderful holiday. Back to another structure for the layout.
