I've been seeing all kinds of threads of this Tom Langford guy.  Is he a celebrity (on a tv show, or sports person)?  Is he a writer in a train book or something?  Has this guy done anything worth researching?  I hope he's ok, but did he get covid or something?  Why are there so many threads on him?  Has he ever modeled any trains?  If so what scale?  I've tried looking him up on the internet, but nothing comes up.  Are there any pictures of this guy on the internet?  Who is Tom Langford? Just curious what's the hubbub... :o

 ACL 1504,

Let me simply say when you're able to read threads on the forum.    Get well soon my friend!
I simply wanted to say (and I'm sure I'm not the only one here) thank you for all the great layout/build posts and your never-ending support for being an inspiration and good friend and supporter on the forum.

You are good people.   Pam is a saint for putting up with you and for letting you come out and play trains with us every day. (thank you pamy.  ;)

Tom get well soon brother and take your time healing (but teach pam how to finish the layout and post so we can see it completed in case you get lazy). ;D

Love you brother!                                                                                                                                              Thanx Thom...

Hi all,
I need help finding two full sets of Microsoft 87-358 Monon Early F-3 Diesel Cab Locomotive Decals.
                                                                                                                                                            Thanx Thom...

Hi all,
The backstory for this car is:
This car started life on the Milwaukee road in early 80's then sat for a while after Milwaukee was dissolved, then the car was used for a while in the next merger, then was showing it's age/rusting and poor treatment from poor forklift operators damaging some of the ratchet side brackets and sat once again waiting to be repaired and eventually sold to it's current owner CGTX and now I hear it's still waiting to be repaired properly and the rumor is, it might be sold soon again to a local lumber company.

Below:
1) Starting with a HO scale undecorated Walthers opera bulkhead flat car. I started by taking a deep breath and asked myself (why did I buy a one piece model)? :o Oh yeah!, because I have modelers disease...   ::)

2) All details (lack thereof really) provided (including the trash can fillers horn hook couplers and plastic wheels). Ok, enough B****in'!

3) Side view of car. Humm??? First order of business is to give this car some character.  First I painted on the base rust color because I want this car heavily weathered. (sorry I forgot to take pictures of the added brass details before I painted the base color). :-[

4) First I cut off every molded on (flat) cable spools and replaced with drilling holes in side of each bracket and installed a brass rod for the cable wires. Next I drilled every cable slot hole (two different drill sizes to achieve the tear drop design). This process only took me 5 extra minutes...after a whole day.  ;D

5) I couldn't leave the molded on grab irons, so I cut them all off and drilled new holes and brass wire to the rescue. Also I took the time make from scratch to small quick end grate platforms. (this was mostly because I did away with the plastic long long swing shank and installed a long shank metal kadee couplers w/draft gearbox.

6) I felt the underside needed some details as well (why not right) so I added air hoses, air lines, brake hangers & rods, brake piston chain, main butterfly bracket and piping & metal Branch line wheels. (for the rivet counters I knowingly didn't run air piping to where it goes properly). I just gave the flavor, I don't count rivets anymore (getting old I guess).  I did however, had to add a lot of weight (cerrabend) to bring this car up to NMRA standards.  (modeling a M.T. car that runs well is harder).

Hello all,
I have a Walther's 6-pack quad bay 100 ton hopper car kit set. I bought many years ago and just happen to open a box of rolling stock and out came this set.

Below:
1) Walthers quad 100 ton hopper car is longer than the plastic coal load pack I had on hand.
2) Walthers 6-pack car kit (collectors edition #3).
3) Floor bottom cut open. Note: car inside is factory painted flat black.
4) B-end details added are brass wire air piping and brake chain w/cog wheel, air hose, un-coupling lift bar and metal kadee couplers.
5) Styrene rod car side air line, car center sill metal weights with cerrabend added in center. Note: all add on bay doors w/latches glued on with open door latches w/brass wire latch connecting rod added.
6) Inside of car with cut open floor doors.

Hi all,
Here are some quick links to the updates on the F&SM boxcar & traveling 2 bay hopper cars.  I built & lettered both cars for George and he weathered both cars.  The hopper car was donated to the Colorado Greely Museum and the boxcar was auctioned off on E-bay to raise money for the museum expansion.  Thanx Thom...

Modeler;

I wonder two thoughts in model railroading today with regards to skill & imagination (i.e. FSM kits).  If no John Allen, then would we have a George Sellios?
If no George Sellios, then where do you think your modeling skill & imagination would be today as a builder?  Let's face it, Both John & George brought model railroading to an elevated level with overall skill of modeling theme.

If neither contributed to model railroading, where do you think your modeling skill & level would be today?  This is a simple question because both are no longer contributing directly to model railroading today, (John has passed, George has retired) so where will you take your modeling skill & imagination tomorrow?

Does model railroading need another modeling trendsetter for the rest of us to follow?  If so, who do you think it will be?  What modeling direction will we take?  Will our skills increase?
You know the history of model railroading, you know where model railroading is today, where will model railroading be many years from now?  What say, you modeler?     Thanx Thom...

Hello all,

So with all the videos, books, articles, kit models, pictures posted or in person visits, what do you think George is saying with his expression of his layout and what do you want to say with your modeling expression whether or not you model the same scale, theme, time frame or completely different models all together?

                                                                                                                                                                                              Thanx Thom...

Hey all,

Spoke with George Sellios today.  George is well and enjoying his full-time retirement & is busy, busy, busy building & improving his layout.  George is considering having only 3 open houses this next year.

George is having his first open house Saturday, April 14th 9:00am-12: 00pm only $5.00 admission, no kids under 10, no food or drink in the layout area.  Any Groups over four should call George to make sure overcrowding is controlled.  George hasn't confirmed any future open house dates for the remainder of the year as of yet.

The layout is something to see if you're able.                                                                                                                                        Thanx Thom...

Hi everyone!

Wanted to share pics of a fun rebuild & Dcc sound upgrade.  After stripping and soldering loose parts, I worked on articulating front bogie to traverse uneven track better.  Added all wheel pickups.  Added Zimo sound decoder with current keeper and nano led headlights, 2x3mm cab light and nano red led in a custom made rear lantern and peeling paint weathering.  Hope you enjoy!  One note here:  Bryan from The Streamlined Backshop helped me with the Zimo 4 cylinder gasoline sound file.  Very cool.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Thanx Thom...

Hi all,
Thought I'd share a pictorial on some particulars with making a factory painted shelf dust collector upgraded to an operating Dcc layout runner.  Starting with the basic running aspects.  The motor runs smoothly and has less than a half of amp or draw.  The gear boxes and couplings operate correctly as well.

However the front truck doesn't swing freely and completely when running through a 22"  "S"  curves. So the first order was to determine the frame ladder was preventing the truck a complete swing.

A simple fix of grinding the outer frame rail to the point of clearing the ladder.  Once painted this type of repair is simple and doesn't affect the pilot or operation of the truck or can be seen. Also noticing the lower frame ladders are soldered crooked.

I took the time to make slight paint removal to resistant solder the ladders straight again.   Thanx Thom...

With all the demand on manufacturers to produce more & more accurate detailed models, isn't proper weathering also part of your demand list?  Why is weathering always included & expected in modeling contests, but not our everyday modeling?

What is too light weathering for your models (just dusting)?
What is too heavy weathering for your models (de-stressed or altered parts)?

Should there be a monolithic weathering theme for your models (all light eveningly applied)?
Should there be a varied weathering theme (light, medium, heavy uneven throughout)?

Are your very rare or expensive models weathered?
Are very well well done weathered models or very poorly weathered models an a incentive or distraction to try weathering yourself? (ARE YOU AFRAID OR EXCITED OF WEATHERING?)

What say you?

Hi all,

If you visited the F&SM rr anytime over the last 30+ years you must have a picture you are either most proud of, or best shot of, or most rare picture containing an angle or happening there that you'd like to share!  I bet there are some absolutely beautiful shots out there.  So what's your BEST .  Here's a rare night shot of the Rocky Point Harbor Station.  Thanx Thom...

Hi glue sniffers,

My question is a curious one, but a fundamental one.

What are your thoughts on diesel or locomotive balancing, if any? If so, how do you go about balancing your equipment.

Do you feel it's important as a part of modeling? Do you know if the prototype weight balanced their locos?

I wanted to pause on my thoughts first so as not to influence your thoughts on the subject.

Thanx Thom...

Hi Everyone,

George had another fun filled open house today.  George unveiled several small structures and upgrades this last week to his wonderful layout.  He wanted me to share some of the pics.  If you're a buff on knowing where everything is on George's layout you'll have no problem spotting what's new.  Thanx Thom...

Rolling Stock / Mystery Engine build???
May 12, 2017, 08:08:38 PM
Hello all,
Thought I'd try something new?  A current build I'm working on this week.  From the ground up.  Test your eye skill level to see what it is I'm building, what material, what era, what model, what road, what history follows this Engine?

I won't say till the end unless someone guess' all 6 questions, then I'll come clean.  Oh the best part.  There's a prize!  Yes, you can guess that too!  Good luck!  :)  First pic, these wheels are painted black with a gold or brass metallic stripes.  Air brushed all except the center black stripe on the counter weights.  Can you guess how?   Thanx Thom...

Hi all,
Well I started this project 8 years ago, just to see if I could do one.  A Dcc Loksound all wheel pickup with lights, peeling paint, 9 member crew w/dog & all the tools I could stuff in.  Thank you to George Sellios for supplying all tool details.

It runs good and looks like crap! ha.  So what say you?  Thanx Thom... P.S. I have 3 more different types-which means I may finish them by the time I'm 90. ha.

Rolling Stock / Rare Loco Test Runs on the F&SM rr.
February 01, 2017, 06:49:10 PM
Hi all,
Sometimes when I'm over at Fine Scale Miniatures helping George with his layout, I sometimes have a few minutes at the end of the day to shoot some test run footage of maiden test runs of customer locomotives to make sure they run, pull & operate as intended or at least see where I need to make adjustments.  George thought I should share a few of them with the forum members.  We hope you like!  Thanx Thom...
