Title: FOS' Hollis Pest Control
Post by: ACL1504 on July 26, 2019, 05:41:49 PM
It's been several months since my last build and now is the time to get back at building.

I'm working on the second level scenery and structures at the south end of Tahope. This area includes Bar Mills Sweaty Betty's Restaurant, Bar Mills Sokols Furniture, CCK's rural Post Office and Country Store, FOS' Caldwell Junction and Gusano's Mexican Rest., the kitbash of KC's Workshop Jenson's kit bash and finally FOS's Hollis Pest Control.

Here is where this will be located.

I won't be starting this kit for another week or so but the start of the tread will give me a little incentive to get on it.

Today I cleaned the flash off the castings, windows and doors. They'll get a soapy bath prior to painting.

I also reviewed the wall parts and instructions. I have an idea of how I may kit bash Hollis but I'm still kicking the can down the road on it.

I used the original kit walls to see how it fit in the space I had available.

This is how the kit, as built, fits in the space - not enough room!

If I turn the kit, as built, to the side it still doesn't fit and not pleasing to my eye.

More in a few.

After some thought, I used the side walls and came up with a solution that will work for me and fit in the space.

You can see I carried the rear second story across and to the front.

This still doesn't give me space for the aub assembly that fits on the right.

Some minor cutting is now required.

Since I made new main walls there is no need to use part of the kit. So, I made copies of all the other walls.

On the original walls the scribed siding boards were a scale 12 inches wide, I used scale 6 inch scribed siding for my copies.

I then determined where I wanted windows and the one door. I decided to use the door in the angled wall section. There are no other doors to the main structure at this time. I will add a door to the rear later.

The window openings were cut in and the windows fit in place.

Lynn,

Hey, thanks for stopping by for a look see. Laser cut walls sure are easier to build. However, on this one I recut all the walls, window and door openings using a #11 blade and steel ruler.

After building Hollis Pest Control, I'll still have a Hollis Pest Control.

I finished cutting out all the window and door openings.

I then started bracing the walls. I live in Central Florida so our humidity is high. I've learned through the years to add more bracing to the structures. I wonder how I learned this?  :'( :-X

For Hollis' I'm using scale 12 X 12's instead of the  10 X 10's. As you can see I had some left over from other builds.

I purchased from Ace Hardware a set of brushes. One brass, one steel and one nylon. I used the brass and steel brushes to add a little stress to the clapboards. I then used the nylon brush to remove the "fuzz" the other two brushes caused.

The nylon brush worked very well. However, I still had to use tweezers to remove some of the larger pieces of fuzz. X-fine steel wool also works well. Thank you for checking in.

I applied one coat of Hunterline Medium Brown A&I to the walls and let dry overnight.

I decide on a green color for the bottom trim and Scalecoat Sand for the rest of the building walls.

The green color is a mix of Floquil MKT Green and Reefer White.

Normally I hand paint the two colors without using tape to cover the top portion of the walls. Since I plan on using the two colors more as a stain than paint, I decided to use blue painters tape.

I used a pointed 1/4" round tip brush for applying the green wash.

With the paint still damp, I used an old soft t-shirt to dab off some of the thinned paint.

You can see a different wall in the above photo. I forgot to get a photo of the larger wall with the t-shirt dabbing.

I used the bottom seven rows of clapboards for the paint line.

When the green paint was dry, I used fresh painters tape and covered the green. I used a short piece of stripwood to press the tape down in the wall.

I used the Scalecoat Sand color next. I dipped the brush in the paint and then the tip in thinner. I then applied this to the walls. Every so often I painted some Sand color directly to the walls and then thinned it with clean thinner. I used the t-shirt to remove some paint and thinner.

When I first opened the Scalecoat Sand color, I panicked as the paint looked pink in color. When dry, the walls appear to be almost Driftwood looking.

Fast forward and here are some of the finished walls.

Next, the corner trim was painted using the same colors.  Here is how I married the two different colors to be even on the  corners.

I applied the Hunterline Medium Brown to four pieces of corner trim using scale 6 x 6's.

When dry I paint on the green color on both ends. When the green was dry, I used painters tape to cover the green.

I then used the sand color to stain/paint the center sections of the four 6X6's.

The tape was removed when dry.

Now to get it glued to the wall edge and even with the bottom color.

I marked on the rear wall section where the green color is on the obverse side.

I glued the corner trim to the wall edge and used the pencil line to align the green. Prior to the glue drying, I made sure it was also properly aligned on the front.

I then cut the trim off on the bottom and top.

Busy day tomorrow with the Babe so I'm not sure I'll get any modeling done.

I sprayed painted the doors and windows with the Scalecoat Sand color. I tried something different this time.

When the doors and windows were still tacky, I dipped them into a jor of Hunterline Medium Brown A&I. I think the A&I will become part of the paint for the overall weathered look to match the walls.

I found the jar at Sam Flax Art Supply.

Once dipped in the A&I, they were placed on a paper towel to dry.

When dry, I wrapped some painters tape around a wood paint stir stick and sprayed them with Model Master Flat finish.

I added the front wall sign. I used fine sandpaper on the rear to thin the sign. I then made a few vertical, from top to bottom, swipes with the sandpaper on the front.

I fingered on some white glue, let it sit for a few seconds and then applied the sign to the front wall.

I pressed it into the clapboards with my fingers and then with the side of a toothpick.

I'll add a little more white fading from the sign to the wall area.

I added Canopy glue to the windows and when dry installed them in the front wall section.

You can see I also glued the four main walls together.

I added the fifth wall section. It was critical for this wall to be level. The pencil mark showing the gable angle matches the outer gabled wall section.

Yes, it is level.

The rear sub assembly was glued in place when the fifth wall section was dry.

The small office section (on the right) was then glued in place.

The angled office wall section won't be glued in place until I make a roof card for it. The angled wall section is just placed up against the main structure.

Tom,

When I mentioned the windows in mt previous post, I was meaning the way you did the coloring.

I've used Canopy Glue for the older glass look, before. For the FOS Pressman Radio kit I did, I tried Elmer's Clear Glue, and got the same effect.

Cheaper, if one is at the point that one needs a new bottle of CG, and a lot more readily available, locally.

As for your build, I'm really liking the structure. May have to find a side street or back alley location for a exterminator business.

Jim,

Okay, I'm with the program now. For some reason I was stuck on the appearance of the glass. Now it makes sense. The dipping of the windows in the A&I when still tacky was just a thought at the moment - luckily it worked out.

The pest control is going to sit next to the river so they can violate all the OSHA regulations. Oh wait, there was no OSHA in the early 50's.  8) 8)

When building a structure I try to come up with something different than the original model.  I guess changing a model from the original floor plan is a means to an end. In this case, the means to an end is more work for me. Not sure why I do this to myself.

I decided to have the bay door open with a concrete floor.

I cut a piece of 1/16" thick board for the bay floor. For it to fit, I had to cut 1/16" off the bottom of each vertical wall brace.

Now I have a nice tight floor fit.

I marked where the vertical wall braces were located using a sharp pencil. I then glued scale 10X10s to the outside edge and between the vertical posts marks.

I painted the floor with full strength Floquil Aged Concrete.

Tom,

I often make myself more "work' by modeling an interior, usually asking myself why I didn't build it according to the instructions and leave the doors closed.  I read somewhere that adding an interior to even a few structures leads visitors to think most buildings have an interior.  I'm looking forward to what you do with this one.

For the walls in the garage area I chose Northeastern Scribed Siding. Mainly due to I had them in my stash.

I didn't notice this but NE now places a thin piece of cardboard between the siding sheets.

I measured the wall on the right and cut it per my measurements. I found a Tichy door and placed it where I wanted to cut the opening.

I then measured the floor area where the left interior wall will be located and drew a pencil line on the floor.

I'm guessing by now ya'll are thinking I glued the walls to the interior of the structure.

Well, I did and I didn't. what I did was glue the three walls to the floor.

I wanted to add some interior details so the structure needed to be removable from the floor.

I used three Rusty Rail castings for the interior detail. No photos of the painting process of the casting.

www.rustyrail.com

I added a few wall signs and some newspapers. The figure in the front is from a Preiser roundhouse figure set. I also added more weathering to the floor area.

Here's the best part, the garage walls, as mentioned, were constructed so the structure fits over the "garage box".

I forgot to mention, I added a base to the bottom of the walls so the structure will sit just above the scenery when applied. The base is scale 4X4s and painted full strength Floquil Aged Concrete.

I still need to touch up the concrete color on the corners as you can plainly see.

I've been very busy on Hollis Pest Control the past two days. I have 20+ photos but this afternoon I'll only cover the interior lighting.

I used the same material for the garage ceiling as I did on the floor. However, I did laminated a piece of wall section to the piece, placed some weights on the bracing and let it dry overnight. Yesterday morning I used Hunterline Medium Brown A&I to stain the ceiling.

I marked in red the center of the top side of the ceiling. I drilled two small holes on each side of the red line for the LED leads.

I marked on the top of the ceiling the + and - for the LED leads. I used Tamiya Flat Black and painted the top around the positive and negative as shown.

I used Slim's 5mm WW LEDs.

www.microlumina.com (http://www.microlumina.com)

I then glued the ceiling in place on top of the three walls. Once centered, I used weights and metal squares to keep it all square while drying.

In the next photo the LEDs appear large due to the close up. When the main building is in place, the lights barely show.

In the next photo you can see the lights have the old incandescent light bulb look.

Notice also I switched the positive red + and the black negative - on top. I did this to make it easier for me to wire the LEDs and not have the wires crossed.

Prior to leaving the State Attorney's Office, I made a few rounds to the attorney's and asked if they needed new legal pads. First, I went to the supply office and picked up about 30 new legal pads. The supply office at the SAO, no money to Staples or anything like that.

I exchanged the old for the new. I then went to the paper shredder and removed all the card board backings. The paper was then shredded.

When finished, I had enough thin cardboard to populate more scratch builds than I'll ever build.

Here are two from my stash.

I then realized I forgot to add the bracing against the fifth wall for the roof support.

I clamped the roof braces so they wouldn't shift while drying.

While the braces were drying, I then gave myself plenty of material for the side roof.

I made a test fit with the roof to make sure the roof decking was square to the walls. They were.

I then removed more decking from the right to the proper width.

I measured from the decking edge to the peak, 34 ft., and drew a ridge line.

I didn't like the look of the decking over the rear door.

I took the top roof panel and drew the wall lines using a sharp pencil. I then cut rafter tails and glued them in place as shown. Notice the rafter tails are longer than the edge of the roof. These will be trimmed when the roof is actually glued on the walls.

In the next photo you can see the extended rafter tails. The roof is now glued in place.

I then added the fascia boards on the gabled end as shown.

I then glued scale 2X6s to the outside edge of the roof panel. The roofing paper will cover the cardboard panel as well as the top of the 2X6.

Once all the glue was dry, the rafter tails were trimmed as shown below.

The trimmed ends/edges of the rafter tails were then stained with Hunterline Light Gray A&I.

For the second story roofing paper I used some left over from a previous kit build. The paper was cut in strips.

I'll also use Elmer's Glue Stick for attaching the roofing material.

I mentioned in prior builds my use of a glue stick instead of the double sided tape. The double sided tape is sticky and doesn't leave any room for mistakes or adjustments.

There are two ways I use the glue stick and it just depends on my mood and desired result. I started out on this build adding the glue from the stick directly to the cardboard roof. The first strip was then placed on the roof panel.

I then added glue to the next upper area and on a small portion of the applied strip a shown.

This method allows you to curl or peal up some of the roofing material.

The other method I use with the glue stick is to apply the glue directly to the strips.

The strip is then added to the roof.

You have about 45 seconds to make any slight adjustments/alignments to the paper strip prior to it really getting "stuck" on the cardboard roof.

More in a few.

I took a regular piece of copy paper and rattle can sprayed it with Ace Hardware Auto Primer Gray.

I'm also fast forwarding here as I applied the lower level roof with the same method as the second story.

Since I drastically changed the foot print, the structure will no longer fit the original site pad.

For the office area, I added a scale 4" thick concrete pad across the front.

I placed a piece of wood under the building and traced the front wall and corner trim on the new slab.

I then cut the wood and made a test fit. It did fit as planned. I then added a small step pad for the office door.

The new slab was removed and painted with full strength Floquil Aged Concrete. When the paint was dry and cured, I glued it in place.

More in a few.

I also made a concrete pad for the rear door. It was painted with the Floquil Aged Concrete but doesn't show in the photo below.

I lightly sanded the "pest control" sign using the backside of an Emory board. I pulled the Emory board down - for those living in Orlando, I pulled it down from top to bottom.  8) 8)  I then used PanPastel Burnt Sienna to weather the sign.

More in a few.

For the sign back, I edge glued some prestained 1X6's. I used two coats of Hunterline Medium brown A&I stain.

I chose to use the 1X6s as the back of the sign will be viewed and I didn't want to show cardboard.

I fingered painted some white glue tot he rear of the sign and pressed it onto the 1X6s.  The next day I used a new #11 blade to trim off the extra 1X6s.

Continued in a few more.

I removed the wings on the fly, and dipped them into Hunterline Medium Brown A&I and set aside to dry.

I painted the fly with full strength Floquil Roof Brown and added highlights of Floquil Antique White to the main body and legs. When dry, the fly body was dipped into Hunterline Light Gray A&I.

The wings were placed back on and highlighted with Hunterline Light Gray A&I. When the fly was dry, I glued it to the sign as shown.

The sign posts are scale 4X4s. The outside edges of the sign were trimmed with scale 2X2s.

Break time for a Diet Pepsi. Back in a few more.

For the office roof shingles I chose to use Northeastern Lumber shingles. Once glued in place, I used Prismacolor markers of green and gray for an individual shingle look. I got the Prismacolor markers from Sam Flax Art Supply.

Okay, I'm nearing the end of this build. It has been fun. Here's a front view of Hollis Pest Control.

A few details were added to the office area and then weathered. Notice the tar pitch around the lower roof and the edge of the shingled roof. This was done using a small paint brush and the Gallery Glass Simulated Liquid Leading.  I used to mix white glue and black paint and thanks to Reading Bob for giving me the Gallery Glass leading.

A small chimney was added to the rear of the office roof.

I added a small roof over the rear porch and supported it with a 4X4 post. I set it at the same angle of the main roof. The roofing paper was weathered with Light and Medium Gray PanPastels.

A barrell and misc. cabinet were added to the rear area. The cabinet was a gift from JusticeCity (Marty) when he visited the A&S RR.

This next photo shows the weathered roof and tar. The roof paper on the corner has been reglued.

Good question and I should have covered it in the thread but didn't. After any application of pastel chalks of any kind, I never spray on dull coat. Two reasons, NO ONE touches my models on the layout and the dull coat will hide the weathering, Meaning, the dull coat blends and makes the chalks appear to disappear.

BTW, I believe that if you want to seal an object that's been weathered with chalks, there's a Krylon product called matte fixative that will do the job.  This is what artists use to seal pastel drawing and I usually find it in the paint department at Micheal's craft store.  The key difference is that the matte fixative doesn't attack chalk like dullcoat.     I remember reading this as an old "Dave Frary" tip.

The funny thing is I never seal the buildings either.

Dick,

Thank you, much appreciate the kind words.

I like to move walls and make the kits look somewhat different than the original. This way it doesn't look like a kit 100 other people have on layouts. George once commented when he sees one of his kits, he like them best when the original floor plan is changed.

I don't do it on all the kits but I try to change a few.

The Krylon sounds like a good idea. Like you, I know "I" won't be moving structures so no spray necessary here either.
