Scratchbuilding / wslc reynolds camp cookhouse
May 20, 2020, 07:34:25 PM
here are a few pictures of a Thomas Yorke WSLC cookhouse , one of 4 examples I built .  This one was done using FLOQUIL FLO-STAIN wood colors on the board and baton siding.

I used paper bag cut into strips as the roofing.  Colored that with ROOF RED floquil .  Tar lapping lines were done with a really small brush.  Some staining to illustrate smoke was done with Bradgon weathering powder.

All the deck wood from northeastern lumber,   was done using Fiebings leather dye, USMC black and 99% pure rubbing alcohol.

The brass MOOSE rack on the wall was from Dave Braun at THE BACKSHOP , now owned by keith Wiseman.

Scratchbuilding / plans for coal dock
January 30, 2020, 02:06:30 PM
I saw this on ebay and managed to purchase these set of plans, lost out on the other coal chute plans.

Got it in my hands today full size print.  Studying it, I see FSM #60 coal dock and also FSM #155 elevated coal dock that was shown built up on this site.  I can see where George got his influence to design a similar one into a kit.   Plans has all the right wood sizes and heigths so it could be built in any scale.  Shows coal cutes to both sides, interesting.

Dioramas / Augustus Beadlebaum blacksmith shop
January 26, 2020, 12:13:51 PM
This is O scale and not sure if it was yorke kit #112 or whether I scratch built it from northeastern scale siding board and batton.  Its based on the Johnstown calif yards structure.  Yorke and Stoney creek both produced a model of this structure.

From the original design I changed the grandt line windows to another style as shown.
I made the roof vent as long as possible.
I made a hydrocal one piece stone & concrete foundation.
Freight doors are scale wood and grandt line engine house hinges.
Roof is made of HO scale campbells corregated roofing.

Zeke Pugwump at the door and his 2 brothers at the shed are visiting today.

A seagull has perched on the sign hoping to get a free lunch today

As I was creating the PUGWUMPS BROTHERS rail services, I made elevated water tanks, oil tank, sand and drying house, an engine house, and also a mechanized coal dock , all to be lined up on either side of the track to the engine house.

I started by constructing an ore dock and the vision was that a rail would run to it and dump into the tapered structure.  But during the construction I had an idea, what I really need is a coal dock for the locos, but the regular type wasn't to my liking for a remote engine facility.

Got to thinking and came up what you see here a steam powered coal fired mechanized coal lift.  A rear track where gondolas could pull up and the contents shoveled into the bucket lifts.

I never got around to building some kind structure where cord wood would be stored in a roofed structure and passed to the fireman on the wood burning locomotive.

Dioramas / PUGWUMP BROTHERS porter engine house
January 13, 2020, 11:54:26 AM
I bought this banta engine house kit o scale minus the wood windows and doors.  Was cheap so jumped on it.
Walls are usa gypsum hydrocal white with real nice stonework I believe from roger Malinowski.  He does real nice work.

Visiting today is Zeke Pugwump head of the company and thats 2 of his brothers Lionel + Bart.  Has pet pig Aretha in truck bed and they are out at all the family facilities looking for the 3 doggies that went missing after a photo shoot of "Day at the Vets"

I used alcohol and indian ink mix , to colour the stonework.  Because the windows and doors were all missing I had to create new spots to fill the holes with wood and grandt line windows.   The upper clerestory set of windows also got filled in with wood.   Roof is my usual rusting process with what looks like a dusting of bragdon pigments.  That's a Bachmann On30 porter locomotive just peeking out.

Ground cover is woodland scenic products and beach sand from lake Ontario, one of the 5 great lakes on the border.

Rolling Stock / PUGWUMPS BROTHERS SANDHOUSE..........
January 11, 2020, 11:51:46 PM
While i was constructing various structures to service the PUGWUMP BROTHERS RAIL SERVICES, the consortium of these structures will service the railroad.

These PUGWUMPS are very industrious and building a great business.

Here is my version of a SANDHOUSE with drying room.

I built and assortment of O scale facilities to service the PUGWUMPS BROTHERS RAIL SERVICES.

This is an elevated oil tank built from a picture and I think I used an On30 scale tanker from Bachmann.

This scratch built structure was created just for something to build.

Its clapboard siding, raised  seam rusty roof , painted in a 3 diff whites floquil paints to achieve that worn out look without being killed.

The figure is good old zeke pugwump leader of the clan, aartista figures and the 3 pooches.  Last time I saw those pooches as they disappeared in the modeling room, never to be found.

I love these short 5 days builds.

Scratchbuilding / SQUARE water tank On30
December 31, 2019, 02:38:34 PM
I only ever built 2 water tanks the round open top one and this one the square design.

Zeek Pugwump is hanging around waiting for the Pugwumps brothers rail services shay to come back and pick him up after younger brother Lionel ran into town for a bottle of Screech Liquor for the boys.

All wood is northeastern scale lumber, colouration of wood is Fiebings leather dye marine corp black, metal filler pipe is from grandt line.

The C & S cinder bear trap stack is a PSC item, appears a seagull has decided those Pugwumps might be good for spare food so has decided to hitch a ride and hang around for a while.

Scratchbuilding / RUBBLES DEPOT tom yorke #117
December 26, 2019, 02:23:02 PM
This my Tom Yorke O scale famous THE RUBBLES DEPOT.  I re-issued this kit with permission of tom yorke , made 50 kits .   The probably most well known kit name of all the yorke line , besides the Pool hall & Bordello.  This was made in both HO and O scale.  This is a modified and upgraded version I built for myself.

I built this kit at least 6 times and used various colours for the stone and also the roofing materials........COPPER RAISED SEAM, STEEL RAISED SEAM, CORRUGATED IRON, REAL WOOD VENEER BIRCH SHINGLES.

The hardest part about this build was trying to figure out how to make the turret hollow without making the turret as a 2 part mold and having the mold seams to deal with. !!!!!!  I figured out how.  Don't think Bendover has figured out how to do it.  The Turret section has a total of 4 parts to it.

I used FW acrylic ink and isopropanol alcohol to colour the stone using 3 shades of ink to colour individual stones.  A system i developed from using George Sellios alco/ink technique on wood.  I went another way.

The added freight open air shed was scratch built using standard construction techniques.  The rusty roof has grant line witches walk iron and the roofing was added too with BRAGDONS real rust pigments.

The rail truck is a on30 brass 1916 Garford truck and the rail bus is a 1914 fiat 1.43 Rio models of Italy Omnibus that I modified with a brass Mack truck hood and many other mods to it.  Believe its running on an On30 Bachmann rail truck chassis

Note the 3 characters sitting to the left on the deck.....I call these 3 guys.....George Costanza, Newman in the middle stuffing his face, and Cosmo Kramer, all of Seinfeld fame, because they sure look like them.

found a couple of "as I built it photos" are inserted into pictures

Scratchbuilding / ROADKILL DINER o scale
December 24, 2019, 01:16:19 PM
As a devotee of FSM designs I always loved his original diner kit and this morning was going thru this site and noticed a whole pile of diners on georges layout in a post.

Here is what I conjured up out of a Bachmann On30 diner car..............I call it THE ROAD KILL DINER, specializing in whats been whacked on the highways and byways.  The car is only a scale 7 foot wide inside and Lolly Pugwump , the plump waitress , has trouble navigating the small walking area behind the seating , so turned them facing out the windows.

I added the cookhouse and all the venting.  Stairs are Banta, people are Arttista O scale > Not sure if I used paper bag or Kleenex as tar paper for the roof.

Dave Rouse built 50 kits of the dual engine , chain drive MACK switcher.  Luckily I was able to procure 3 of them over a period of time on ebay.

2 got built, this one in green and another in yellow, the other got sold when I went to build hot rods again.  I can only find these few pictures of the RESIN BODIED model.

Backwoods miniatures in England also created the same loco but used photo etched brass you had to bend.  Was a lot more complicated build and never got to it, sold off.
