Hey guys thanks glad to have you along.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Got the windows and the door installed in Bunkhouse #1.
Here's A photo.
Karl
Great start, Karl. I'm following along, too. I've always loved seeing this kit, but my layout theme is seaside, so this was too much of a stretch. But I'm really eager to see what you do with it.
--George
I will be lurking following along on this build as well Karl. Are you planning to combine these kits with your previous build?
Hey George:
glad to have you along.
Karl
Hey Bruce:
I have the rest of the kits to build for this also. They will not be added together until they are put onto my friends layout.
Karl
Karl as usual your moving right along.
Its great to see someone change the coloring to there liking and your doing a wonderful job with the colors.

I hope you will post some pictures when everything is put into your friends layout. That's going to make for one hell of a scene!

Nice rugged look, Karl.
--George
Hey Bruce:
His layout is 35 X 45 feet and it's just getting underway so I have no idea when they will be placed on the layout. glad you like the way it looks.
Karl
Hey George:
thanks buddy glad you like how it looks.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Bunk #1 if finished. Added a few signs and some newspapers. I started this June 13th so it took about a week to finish. Here's a few pics. Hope she looks OK. Brett said you could ad A piece of wood instead of cap shingles so that's what I did. A flat piece and a ridge piece on top. Got this idea from another kit I built years ago. I may put a rolled roof on bunkhouse #2.
Karl
Awesome job Karl. A week for you is a month for us mere mortals, but I'd love to build one of his kits.
Hey Dick:
Thanks for the compliment. Glad you like it.
Karl
Looks great Karl..... 8)
hey Gregory:
Thanks buddy appreciate you comment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Separate boards have been added to Bunkhouse #2. Here's a photo.
Karl
Hi All:
Been working on Bunkhouse 2. Walls are are done and door and windows are installed. Not many replies. Hope it isn't to boring for you guys.
Karl
Nice looking bunk house Karl.
That first bunkhouse came out great, Karl.
Cheers, Mark.
Hey Curt, & Mark:
Hey guys thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Really loving this one I especially like the hand sawn look of the wall planks
Hey Dick:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Been busy Karl. But still following along.
Great work on the coloring.
Jerry
Hey Jerry:
thanks very much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Working on Bunkhouse 2. Almost done. Hopefully photos tomorrow.
Karl
Hi All:
Both bunkhouses are finished. Bunkhouse # 2 doesn't have much detail against it as it goes on the ground around it. I decided to go with rolled roofing to give it some variety. Hope it looks ok.
Karl
They both look great Karl.
Beautiful work, Karl. The variety in roofing works well to distinguish them. I think it also balances them out--makes each one distinct.
--George
I think you did a fantastic job getting the wood to look very realistic. I always like greyish wood that just aged over time and you can still see the woodgrain.
As for different roofs, this is even better because as times change materials, styles, and methods change. I love to show additions to buildings by changing the roof style.
Looking good, Karl.
The red rolled roofing makes a nice contrast. I like the old pallet steps.
Cheers, Mark.
Looking good, Karl. Really enjoy this build........ Dennis
Hey Curt:
thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Mark:
thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Hey George:
Thanks much. Appreciate the compliment.

Karl
Looks good Karl.
Hey Curt:
thanks decided to add some signs for color and fun.
Karl
Hi All:
Been working on the kitchen. Here's a few pics.
Karl
Hi All:
Here's a photo of the front. I will touch up those windows.
Karl
Hey All :
I touched up the windows. They look ok now.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Hope to start painting the castings for this one today. May it will look a little better then.
Karl
Karl, I love the way it came out ....Dennis
Karl
This build is looking great. I like how the wood siding turned out.
Very nice on all these buildings, Karl. I also really like the roof on the kitchen.
--George
Hey Dennis:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hey J9ohn:
yeah thanks compliment much appreciated. I like how the wood looks also.
karl
Hey George:
thanks much. Glad you like how the roof came out.
Karl
Looking very good Karl.
Hey Steve:
thanks buddy:
Finished the kitchen today. Here's a couple of photos.
Karl
Karl, kitchen and details look really good. Your placement of details really makes the model. Nice eye for that.
--George
Karl,
Wow, fantastic build and look my friend. Beautiful job.
Tom ;D
It looks great especially with all the details Karl.
Beautiful work Karl!!
Hey George, Tom, Curt And Cuse:
Hey Guys thanks for all the great compliments. so much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Guys:
started the Fuel Depot building #5 today. Colors will be Depot Buff walls with Zinc Chromate Windows.
Karl
Karl
Another great build, my friend!
Love the speed you work. A new build almost every week :D
Hi John S. & Dick:
thanks for the compliments and following along. Walls are assemble for the Fuel Depot. Here's A Photo. Walls are Depot Buff With Zinc Chromate Windows & Door. A&I is applied to both along with dry-brushing of a light gray.
Karl
Great colors. Are you still using floquil or is there a good substitute for depot buff
I use Tamiya Buff.
Hi Dick:
Yes I used Floquil on the walls. I do not have any Tamiya buff. I will check it out if I can find A place that carries it. Thanks for the tip Curt.
Karl
Karl, nice weather-worn look to the walls, without getting into decrepit. Weathering is so much fun I sometimes overdo it, myself. You have a good eye for just right.
--George
Hey George:
thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Karl,
Love it all my friend, love it all.
Tom ;D
Hey Tom:
Thanks so much buddy. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Decided to do something totally different with the roof on this one. Instead of shingles I applied corrugated metal roof by paper Creek Models. Hope it looks OK. Next is the porch and barrel plat form and other scenery.
Karl
I Love it!!!!!!!!!! I love the way you can make it so rusty and natural.....Dennis
Fantastic roof, Karl. Rich variety to the rusted panels and the contrast with the roof cap and fire barrels is really nice.
--George
Hey Dennis & George:
Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated and glad you like it.
Karl
Very nice Karl.
The roof looks great. I have used paper in the past and while it looked great in photos, I thought it looked flat in person
"Paper Creek" had great products! It's a shame that line didn't continue. I color the edges of the corrugated panels with a dark grey (not black) artist marker, it covers the white paper and helps set off each panel.
dave
Hi Curt & Dick:
thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi Dave:
Yeah It's a shame you can't get the stuff anymore. Thanks for the tip.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Today I assembled the front porch and the barrel platform. Also chose all the castings shown in the photos. Here's a pic.
Karl
Here's Paper Creek tarpaper, where I colored the edges using a grey artist marker, as well as the corrugated siding on the walls. Also Paper Creek brick for the foundation.
dave
Nice job on the roofing. A good choice to change them!!
Jerry
Hey Jerry:
Thanks much. I'm working on painting and weathering a bunch of castings for this structure to finish it up and move on.
Kar.
Hi All:
Finished up the Fuel Depot structure today. Took A pic nect to the kitchen which is also finished. On to the accessories for the fuel depot. I believe there is 3 mor structures to go.
Karl
Karl, What a great job!!!! I love the roof and they way the color's run together....Dennis
Heh Karl, It seems to tie altogether as a good mini-scene. (I still wonder how the drums got on the platform? :P
Great as usual.
Hey Dennis:
Thanks for the great compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Marty:
Glad you like it. Thanks. I guess the employees put them on the platform.
Karl
Marty:
Just looked at the plans. When installed on the diorama there is narrow gauge track behind the fuel depot. So I will assume they will be loaded and unloaded to the plat form from there. I will not be building the diorama as my friend will install the kit directly on his layout.
Karl
Great structures, Karl. This is building into one heck of a scene. I didn't realize there were so many structures in the kit. You've kept a really nice consistency in their appearance throughout the build that keeps them looking like they all belong together so far.
--George
Just caught up Karl.....great job. 8)
Hey George:
Thanks for the great compliment. Glad you like how they look ling they belong together. Thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Greg:
thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
The Fuel Depot is finished. had to go to the end of the instructions to do the fuel tanks next to the building. On To I believe the Rigging Shed.
Karl
That looks marvelous Karl , great job , well done, of course it's the usual from you.
Excellent modeling Karl.
Hi Janbouli & Curt:
thanks for the great compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl;
At the top of your game on this one Karl.
Jerry
Karl
It looks great! Keep up the fine work my friend.
hey Jerry & John:
Thanks for the great compliment guy. It is so much appreciated. Working on the rigging shed.
Karl .
Wow! Thirty day's That's three months for us mere mortals. It really shows that sierra west kits, while expensive, are actually a lot of bang for the buck. And Karl you're hitting it out of the park.
Dick
Looks terrific, Karl. I love the row of fuel tanks.
Cheers, Mark.
Hi All:
finished up the Rigging Shed. Here's photos. On to the tool house.
Karl
Really nice modeling Karl.
Hey Curt:
thanks buddy appreciate the compliment.
karl
Karl, that might be my favorite structure in this group you are currently working on. Lots going on -- lots of detail to look at.
--George
Awesome looking build Karl.
Jim
Great work, as always, Karl...I consider this thread the supplement to Brett's instructions for the SWSM kit I'm diving into next
John
Hey George & Jim:
Thanks for the compliments guys much appreciated.
Karl
Hey John:
Thanks for the great compliment. What SWSM kit are you going to build?
Karl
Hi All:
Been working on the Tool Shed. All separate boards. Stained with A&I first then dry-brushed with Floquil Zinc Chromate as I did not have the color Box Car Red in the instructions. Here's A few photos. Hope it looks OK.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Got some more work done today. Added rafters and gable trim. Also finished the platform and glued structure to it. On to the details. Roof is flat black Dry-brushed with light gray.
Karl
Great coloring.

Thanks for the great compliment. What SWSM kit are you going to build?
Karl
The Woodcutters Shack
Hey John;
Sounds good. I'll be following along.
Karl
Looking good Karl. Are you building a diorama with all these kits or are they destined to be a new town on your railroad?
Hi Bruce:
Thanks for the compliment.
I'm building these kits for a friends 35 X 45 foot layout. He requested I not put them into A Diorama so they can be installed on the layout the way he wants them to be.
Karl
Looking terrific Karl.
Hey Lynn:
thanks much appreciate your comment.
Karl
Hi All:
finished the Tool Shed yesterday. I really liked this one because of all the detail it has. I painted the large pipe rust. I didn't care for it so I painted over them with black. The rust showing through the black was some type of chemical reaction. I liked it so I left it that way. Hope it looks OK.
Karl
Really nice Karl.
I've always wondered why tool sheds are always made just a little bit too small to hold all the junk that goes inside them. Your shed is an excellent example and I really, really like it. It looks like it would fit nicely next to the Midlands engine facility on the Atlantic & Southern RR.
Looks wonderful Karl! :D
Really beautiful work, Karl
Jim
Hey Curt:
thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated as always.
Karl
Fantastic work, Karl. What is the gray sandy looking ground cover you are using? I like it.
--George
The tool shed looks terrific, Karl!
The red tone sets it apart nicely from the norm. I really like that chemical reaction on those pipes too.
Cheers, Mark.
Hi George:
It is Highball real dirt. Glad you like how it looks. Thanks.
Karl
HeyMark:
Thanks appreciate it. Yeah I liked the reaction also.
Karl

It's not that tool sheds are too small. It's that "mess expands to exceed the space available". If you build a bigger tool shed, you'll just get more junk.
dave
Hey Dave:
You just might be right. More room for more junk.
Karl
Hi All:
Station walls are finished. On to assembly. Looks like I need some touch up on windows & doors. That will be b4 assembly.
Karl
Rigging & Tool sheds. A perfect match and you really did a great job painting the details and placing them.
Jerry
Hey Jerry:
thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Walls are assembled. Here's a few pics.
Karl
Fantastic work Karl!
Hey John:
Thanks buddy much appreciated. Here's a few straight on shots.
Karl
Very nice Karl.
Hey Curt:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Got the baggage shed and one of the platforms done. I does get A set of stair I haven't done yet.
Karl
Very nice Karl. What type of roofing are you planning on using?
Hey Curt:
Thanks. I'll be using the wooden shakes in the kit.
Karl
Fantastic work Karl
Hey Lynn:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
The station is finished except as I just notice for some gable trim. I will add that. I decide to do my roof cap in copper. Hope it looks ok. added the deer Creek sign to the Baggage Shed. On to painting all those cstings. also added the bracing on the platform legs.
Karl
Looks good Karl!
Hey Steve:
thanks buddy appreciate the comment.
Karl

Jim
Karl, Nice work on this kit--the roof in particular. I'm just getting caught up on posts.
--George
Karl
Another fine build by the master. Great work buddy.
Beautiful work!!
Jerry
That's some pretty impressive modeling Karl. Everything you've built looks fantastic.
I am curious on how you are able to paint so many castings in what appears to be a short period of time. These always seem to take forever for me to do. Any hints you would be willing to share?
8) 8) 8)
Hey:
Jim, Opa George, John S and Jerry:
Thanks for the compliments Guys. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Bruce:
Thanks for the great compliment. Most of the castings are items that are wood based. I tape them to a pice of plywood and spray paint them with Krylon aomouflage #4295 sand. Looks just like Floquil Earth. Then all the details are painted by hand. Metal barrels are all painted by hand. Some are painted one color and others are painted red or green with a white middle band.
Karl
Great job Karl..... 8)
Thanks for the info Karl. I will have to give that a try. I've been dinking around with an O Scale structure that is in need of detail parts. I guess there's another order to Rusty Rails in my future.
;D ;D ;D
