Kit Building / Taxi cab company signs
March 03, 2020, 04:46:25 PM
I'm in need of the above for a structure.

Anyone have anything to spare, or can suggest available decals (or a kit to rob them from)?

Thanks.

Scratchbuilding / Beginner
February 19, 2020, 08:15:12 AM
My wife, bless her heart, asked if I would build the structure shown in the picture. I want to do it in wood.

I've never scratchbuilt a structure before. I can guess at the dimensions, but really stumped at how to begin. Anyone know of a book or other source of info, to help me get started?

I have "Scratchbuilding For Model Railroaders" by Bob Walker. Huge amount of excellent info, but no where is there a section of the "lets get started" sort (The station model on the cover is almost a dead ringer for the other structure she asked if I could build).

I looked at build threads on here, there were a couple that may have shown steps, but the pictures are no longer available, and most of the rest just show finished projects.

Any hints, tips or 'how to' info anyone can share?

Thanks.

Kit Building / Bar Mills Delancey St - Rickett's
February 18, 2020, 03:22:30 AM
I actually started this kit back before Christmas, but put it aside over the holidays, and then for the Challenge build.

I have mixed feelings about this kit. Not just Ricketts, but the whole set. I love Bar Mills kits, I've built several, and always have fun doing them. Their instructions can sometimes be a bit erratic, or scattered, but if one reads them all before hand, it's not a problem. And they usually contain some of Art's humor.

Delancey St comes with 70 pages of instructions, broken up into sections for each building. But you almost have to read them all through before you begin, as there are bits here and there that might pertain to one of the other structures. With all that, they admit that the instructions are not complete, and refer you to several 'How To' videos for further info. There were supposed to be 7 videos, one for each structure and one for the overall diorama, I believe. That would work fine, I guess, if they had actually done it that way. But they only did one each for 4 of the buildings, a part 2 for 2 of those, and one on the scaffolding. One building was missed altogether. As for the videos, they basically just consist of Atr and Jack Ellis talking about the individual kit, pointing out a few things you might not notice at 1st glance while building it, and a bit on techniques. Overall, an experienced modeler could probably build the kit just fine without the videos, and I don't feel they would help a less experienced modeler all that much.

Perhaps this large a kit just took way more time for them to do up, and they had to do it this way to get the kit out the door without a lot of delay.

Ok, so that being all said, here's the 3 pics, of the kit parts and the instruction sheets showing the built kit.

Modeling: Signage / Creating signs?
January 12, 2020, 08:33:04 AM
Anyone know of any good "How To" tutorial or write up, etc.. on how to actually create signs using a computer?

I see folks saying "I created my signs on my computer and printed them out" or similar,  and sometimes they might mention they used ABC or XYZ software, but never seem to get into explaining how they did it.

I have GIMP and Irfanview, and whatever Windows 10 gives you, but haven't a clue how to use them for creating signs.

I'd rather not have to buy some expensive software, if I can help it.

Anyone?

General Information / Just a thought...
January 01, 2020, 10:49:31 AM
if you could only get to either the Fed show or the May one, which would you opt for?

Will there be fewer of the 'Craftsman Corner' dealers at the Feb show, with the Springfield show being so close?

General Information / Lodgings??
December 31, 2019, 02:34:55 PM
I know this is a bit last minute, but wife and I may be able to get up to Timonium in Feb, after all.

We will be driving up, so will have transportation.

Any recommendations regarding lodging, before I start calling a whole list?

Thanks.

eBay Crazies / FOS' The Treminal...
December 10, 2019, 09:45:16 AM
There are 10 of this kit listed on ebay, currently.

Here's a link to a search page showing all 10:  https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1312.R1.TR10.TRC2.A0.H0.Xthe+terminal.TRS1&_nkw=the+terminal&_sacat=220

Nine are from the same seller (though under 2 different names)

Will someone buy one of those 9, just so we can see if the other 8 become unlisted? Or did he or she buy a bunch, hoping they would be a retirement investment? LOL

Vehicle Modeling / Stoney Mtn. Classic castings??

Anyone built any of SMCC's auto kits?

Are they basically clean up and try to do a neat paint job?

Thanks.

Kit Building / RSM's Carrick's Bakery
November 14, 2019, 03:08:30 PM
I've started the build, but as usual, forgot to take pictures at the beginning, though I doubt pics of priming detail castings is all that interesting :).

Will try and do better from here on.

One dilemma I want to resolve before I get to the step, is the windows. Kit instructions have them installed as shown on the right 3 windows, with the laser cut lintels on top. However, that puts the window casting upside down, regarding the sashes (upper half of window is to the outside).

On the left are windows installed with sashes correct, no lintels. Think that looks ok, not having the lintels in place?

I think so, but thought I would ask.

Thanks.

Updating this based on Tom's info.

Years ago, Chooch Enterprises made & sold five Victorian styled building facades, numbered 8200 through 8204

If anyone has one or more of 8200, 8203 or 8204, stuck in a box or closet, that might never get used, I'm interested in buying them.

Thanks.

Dioramas / Basing structures...
October 27, 2019, 02:48:23 PM
...to be able to add them to diorama after built.

Trying to decide how to base structures, and what to use.

For my in progress (slow) Horwood Bros. kit and my Carrick's Corner kit, Dario calls for 1/2" plywood to base the complete scenes on. I am wondering if 1" blue insulation foam would do, instead.

I have a small structure from a few years ago, with a foamcore base. The regular type, not gator board type. I painted both sides with a earth base color, mounted structure and did the small amount of scenery it needed. Has not warped at all, even having been in a box out in shed for about a year. I also have done a couple of small military models scenes in same way. All these are aprox. 2 or 4 inches by 4 or 5 inches. I'm wondering if larger bases might warp despite painting.

My Thames kit is mounted on picture mounting board, about 1/16" thick. The sidewalk is printed surface, attached directly to the board.

So, I'm very curious as to how others do it, and what they use.

Thankful for any input.

I have 2 Sylvan auto kits:

No. V-175 '34 Ford 4 Door Sedan
No. V-176 '34 Ford 5 Window Coupe

My diorama was to be set on the 30's, but will now be the 50's.

Anyone have 2 Sylvan kits of the 50's they would be willing to trade for?

Thanks

Kit Building / Busch Diner
August 11, 2019, 07:55:06 AM
Not really a build kit, but built this diner a few years ago, didn't quite finish it.

Found it with the other kits I have been pulling out, and finished it up. Only needed the precut sides and ends applied, and the steps done.

May have to call my street scene 'Diner Row' or similar, what with the cafe at the Horwood service station, the future KCW Linda's Lunchenette, and now this diner. :)

Kit Building / RSM Horwood Bros.
July 29, 2019, 05:32:49 AM
Ok, so a few years ago, I hit a low point, lost interest, it seemed, in building structure kits. Not enough time, no space for finished kits, wife's health issues.. This, after shelling out quite a bit for large ticket kits.

Most got sold off, to fund a new interest.

Now back into structure kits, and of course, kicking myself regarding those I sold off. Doah!

One that I kept, as I had started it, and wasn't sure it would sell, was Rail Scale Miniatures Horwood Bros. Garage.

While waiting for a couple of new kits to arrive, which one of was to be my next build, I dug out the RSM kit, thinking I would at least sort out and organize all the parts, ready for a future time to finish it.

However, I think I will tackle it, next, as it will be one of the focus points in my diorama, and because of it's size, will help with the positioning of other structures.

So, my next build, picking up from where I left off..

eBay Crazies / Not 'crazies', but curious...
July 27, 2019, 10:18:45 AM
It's probably me, but what is the Enticement to a buyer, when seller lists 'Free Returns'? Free shipping I totally get, but returns? Granted, if I but a item that turns up damaged, or missing parts, I might want to return it, if the seller can not correct the issue. But, is a seller using "Free Returns' selling items he expects the customer won't like, once received?

Also, is there that much of a market for built up kits? For me, it's the kit building. Are there that many out there who don't want to build?

Just some Sat AM puzzlements :)

Vehicle Modeling / Street sweepers?
July 26, 2019, 08:44:26 AM
Anyone know if anyone has ever produced a model similar to this?

I can remember them coming by early in the mornings. One day a week, everyone had to park on opposite side of the street, the night before.

Kit Building / CCK's Thames St Shops
July 09, 2019, 01:34:55 PM
Another kit I started, and put up, a few years ago.

I'm not sure this one is going into my street scene diorama, but I'll start back in on it, and see where I get to. It will get done, just may get put on hold for a kit or 2 that I do know will be in the scene.

Yes, the wall color is basically the same as the Pressman structure, but not by intent :)

Kit Building / Aged concrete paint?
June 27, 2019, 04:36:56 PM
For those of us without stashes of Floquil paints, anyone have a suggestion for a good substitute for the above paint color?

Preferably a craft paint, as that would be easiest and quickest to get. Barring that, any other brands.

And no, there is not any outside I can walk out and look at LOL

That will have to wait until next time I am in town.

Thanks.
