Baggage Car - Daily Chat / priming metal details....
April 28, 2021, 08:04:04 PM
Hey All,
I have a stupid question to ask. What is the best way to clean, and prime metal details. No matter if i tried dish soap, or alcohol, and than did not touch the casting, sprayed with 2 light coats primer, and dried for several days, I still sometimes on edges get the metal coming through when handling to paint.
Any thoughts, or better ways would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks

Hey All,
Here are pics of the new Fos Scale kit, named in my honor. A big Thanks to Doug for including me with such greats as Panzera / Jensen / Jimmy Dee / Grove / Wiley.
Make sure you check it out at Fosscalemodels.com, and pick one up....

Scratchbuilding / Emporium Scratch
February 23, 2019, 01:01:34 PM
Hey All,
As you can see from the first pics the door building department has been busy. Some of George's castings are a nice challenge to duplicate in wood. The fifth pic is all of the walls cut, and ready to go. I am going to go for a plain gray/driftwood by the sea type of finish. The doors are pretty much what the walls finished color will be.
The last pic is of one of my proud accomplishments. All of Doug's limited kits (except The Garment District) graciously signed by Doug. If anyone out there is willing to give up their Garment District, I will pay a GOOD price...

Thanks for taking a look....

Kit Building / FSM Coal and sand Shed
February 09, 2019, 12:27:23 PM
Howdy All,
So here is a first for me. I have almost 50 FSM kits on the shelf, but never have built one. A fellow modeler here on the Forum, asked if I would build one for him. The only question I asked him, was new, or Old? You can guess from the pics what his reply was. Thanks for taking a look.....

Scratchbuilding / The Tannery
November 29, 2017, 12:22:03 PM
Hey all,
Here is the next scratch build I am going to tackle. The old #11 blade was busy last couple days, as you can see for the majority of the walls are cut out.
I still need a little more B&B for the conveyor shed. The peeling paint effect, I wanted to try something new. I am not sure if I read this someplace, or it just popped into my head. I was standing in Michaels, and I was thinking, "what will paint not stick well to?" WAX was the answer I got. I painted on the  trusty driftwood pickling wash, than a thin coat of clear wax. on top of that goes the Skyline blue. Once this has dried for awhile, I take the euro scratch tool, and lightly scrape off paint here, and there. I than hit it with a grimy black wash, and dry brush ever so lightly with a lighter skyline shade. Excuse the crappy lighting again for the photos. One day I will get it right....
On a side note, the kit that I have, seems to be missing some castings, I think. If anyone out there has the Tannery on a shelf, and can check to see that there should be three of the standard freight doors as pictured, that would be great. If anyone has two of these in their spares box, I would certainly pay for them, so that I can make the kit complete. Thanks for taking a look...

Scratchbuilding / Barnstead Lumber Scratch build
October 11, 2017, 02:02:04 PM
So the last two mystery builds, someone guessed it in under an hour. I put up pics of the cut walls, and could not stump you all. This time I have made a copy of one of the doors used in the kit. I am hoping this might take a little longer. I used the old school method of stacking the layers of wood to build this. (been reading some old 50's MR lately, and this was the only way they knew how to do it). Let the guessing begin........

Scratchbuilding / Schramm Scratchbuild

Hello All,
So this is Mystery Scratch build installment #2. The last one went sooo quick, that my head almost spun around. Let see if I can stump the masses this time. Here is the main building pieces cut out.....I had not planned on building this, but I had some Aged Clapboard siding from North Eastern Scale, that I was dying to try....Anyways good luck, and let the Guessing begin.......

Scratchbuilding / Crocker Bro scratch build
July 03, 2017, 09:06:30 AM
Howdy All,
Back here in my favorite Forum. Jumped over to Kit building for one, but back Home again. So I thought I would have some fun with all of you fellow Modelers. I had a few extra hours yesterday, and some left over clapboard, and decided to do a scratch build copy of a kit. I have this kit in my collection, and was able to measure the pieces.
So lets see how long it will take one of you to identify the Mystery building. Some hints are that it was released in the 80's, and Frankly it was a kit that I had purchased when I was 12 yrs old, but sadly traded to another kid for some baseball cards. All these years later I have another one....
  Let the Guessing begin.........

Kit Building / FOS Carter Supply
June 22, 2017, 01:55:11 PM
Hey All,
So I broke down at the Amhearst show, and purchased a kit from FOS. This will actually be the first kit I have ever built.
The first photo is of course of what Doug's looks like. The second photo is all of the walls put together, and stained. The next step, was a shot in the dark. I wanted to play with the hairspray technique some more, but I also saw modelers using crackle medium for a cracked paint effect. So, being adventurous I combined the two. I sealed the stained wood with Dullcote, and than used a really great product. Tim Holtz Picket Fence Crackle paint. (This has been discontinued, but Jo-Anns still has some left in a three bottle set) I sprayed on the hairspray, and let dry. Than I painted on the crackle paint, and let dry until cracking started. Than came the warm water scrubbing. The results varied, so cracking appears in certain areas only, but it looks pretty good. Started working on the Green lower color. This will be done with just the hairspray alone. Those pics will be up tomorrow. Thanks for taking a look.

I recently purchased this kit from a collection. I however can find little to no information as to if it was a limited run, or other. If anyone out there has additional information on this, please reply here.
Thanks so much...

Scratchbuilding / Mclachlan Hat factory
December 08, 2016, 10:18:05 AM
Hey All, so I just finished up the brewery, and here is my next project. The town I live in used to be the Hat making capital of America. Here is the McLachlan hat factory from the early 1900. The first photos are before they moved in, and the last is what it looked like when production was at peak. Not sure yet which I will tackle, I kind of like the original building.......So Here we go again....
