I discussed this with a few people at the EXPO and figured this would be a good time to ask. My thoughts were it would run from New Years day to April 15th, Tax Day here in the states. 6"X 6"building or smaller, but if you want to build a building flat that's 2"X 12" or a building that's 3"X 8" that's OK too. Detail, modify, add lighting on to it as much as you want or build it straight out of the box. Doesn't have to be a diorama, but if you want too that's fine if you want to go that far. We all have plenty of these small kits stuffed in a box or on a shelf, so lets get some build threads going on this forum and help winter go by a little bit faster. If there's plenty of interest, I'll start a thread on the Contest Thread Board. Let me know what you think.... Raymo
sounds good count me in
I'm in, once I get the two locomotive decoder installs finished. :)
Jeff
It sounds good to me, I'm in. I need a signal tower for my Eagles Nest Yard.
I'm in
There sure seems to be more pondering than committing going on here. Where are all the modelers?
I'm in for what I can do at this point but I'm willing.
Tom ;D ;D
OK...........I'll try!
Welcome aboard Whiskeyriver
See ya
Bob
Count me in. I may get a late start as my bench is tied up with rolling stock right now.

Great to see you joining us! Welcome!
Welcome aboard Whiskyriver. :D
I'm still pondering the contest. I have one build in progress and several more lined up. Most are too big to fit in the allotted time frame even if I started one right now (but I'd rather finish up what's on my workbench first). I'll keep pondering though. ::)
I'm returned to build things....so I'm in too!!
I have pondered. Searching my stash of kits initially revealed the majority to be FSM, SRMW and FOS limited editions and way to big for the challenge size-wise. However I have uncovered a Bar Mills "1 of 500" kit which having researched shingled structures in Norway could be re-purposed.
So I'm in too.
Mike
It sounds like this party is starting to take shape.
How many members we need...?

How many members we need...?
We have a definite 9 and maybe 2 more out of 400 registered members of this forum. I'll move forward with the challenge, and hopefully get 10 more build threads on the forum.
count me in.
Time to start building

I think we will get many more - we have a number of our members traveling and off-line for the holidays. I say Full Steam Ahead!
Can I give you a definite maybe. 2018 looks like some medical events maybe be in the offing so it's hard to plan ahead. Jim
I will get in on this after my eyes get fixed in Feb.
Jim
so what are the rules exactly?--- the whole diorama is 6 x 6 or the structure is 6x6? is it just a structure build without it placed on a scenery base/diorama?.......
Bob, my thought was any building 6"X 6" or less. But if you want to building flat that's 2" X 12" or a building that's 3" X 8" that's fine. It doesn't have to be a full diorama but if you want to go that far, that's OK too. I'll start a new thread on the contest threads board this weekend so people can show off what they're building and then you can do your thread under the kit building board.
I forgot to mention you can build the kit stock or change it up as much as want.
Just joined in the fun here.
Count me in.

Thanks for the welcome all

Tom, It's Florida............a stuffed alligator eating a 6 foot python!
The pythons in the Florida Everglades are big enough to eat a gator.
This year I've seen a Georgia Bulldog eat a gator, a South Carolina Gamecock had some gator, an FSU Seminole had some gator, LSU Tiger had some gator, Texas A&M Aggies had some gator, etc and etc.
I'm getting depressed now, I need to stop. :'(

Boy things in Florida have changed there since I last lived as a young adult. It was almost everything could bite you and only big gators could eat you. Pythons never entered my mind too often except only the rare news report of capturing a baby python by accident. Not like today's almost daily news reports. Oooh, I get the heebie jeebies just thinkin bout it. T...

Hey Tom.....didn't the Mizzou Tigers eat a bit of Gator too? ;D ;D ;D
Any chance of one of these build challenges taking place in 2019?
The Annual Raymo Tax Day Challenge...

Mizzou? Wow. That is embarrassing. If you ever lose to the Illini, it's time to hang up the cleats.
(yes, I'm an Illinois alum)
OK I'm in. Took a little time to get the dates in the thread straight in my head. Definitely should be my buddy Raymo's event. Jim

I'm in ... brought lots o' goodies back from Expo. I'm thinking T & B Wiley Waterproofing...FOS' new one.
Dave,
I'm looking forward to seeing what new techniques you brought home from the Expo.
I'm up for the challenge, too. Not sure what I will build, more than a few on the shelf to choose from.
I'm in and will probably start it in December.
I'll build one that hasn't been built, at least not in a thread on this forum.
Tom ;D
Sure! What the hell, I've failed at it the last 2 years... ;D ;D
Hot dog !!
I had better go find some shelf orphan screaming to get built.
Jaime
So a kit before New Year, is that the challenge? I'm in.

"So when do you think Danny should start his build thread?"
OK...confused. Seems this is a thread from LAST year. Is there a new New Years Challenge?
Both ;D ;D ;D
🤯
How about dedicating this year's challenge to Tom Schwarz....
Very cool...

Great Idea. Although I never got to meet him, all accounts show a tremendous passion for the hobby. The FSM Sewall's is next on my build list - I think it has just become the T. Schwarz Foundry. It will reside in the industrial area of the Eagles Nest Yard on the Superior & Seattle. Oh and I'm in for the build challenge. I have to finish Threadwell's / Delabrarre's first so I hope the deadline is tax day April 15th, right?
Awesome, John!
I'm in. I've got a whole bunch of smaller structures I need to build for the layout.
Contest doesn't officially start till January 1st?
-Steve
Can we get a verification on the spelling of Tom's last name?
Schwarz.
Do we need a new thread with some parameters, i.e. start date, end date, etc. I'm definitely on board with naming it for Tom Schwarz. Thoughts?
C'mon, one of you challenge initiators, Jaime, Dan, Dave?
Tom was likeable. Think it is neat to name a model build for him. I will look through all the cool kits I got at the EXPO and see if I can try this and tag along if time frame works. I have some traveling coming up, so depends on dates and time line for me.
Jim D
Good idea...just so we're all on the same page. I couldn't start until late December, anyway, with other projects in the works.
Why don't we plan on Jan 1st for start date. Tax day to end it. I know the last 2 years some of us syarted early. I can start a thread for showing what you plan on building and then you can start your own build thread.
Could someone describe exactly what the Challenge is? I remember seeing this as I had joined this group last December. I have never really understood the activity.
Just build something and try to do a detailed build thread on the forum for other modeler's to use for reference or inspiration. Last year I tried to limit it to a 6"x6". It can be anything you want, building, boat, vehicles, or even a seagull out of putty....
Well count me in. I'll have to build a smaller kit in conjunction with the larger one (FSM Avram's Bakery) that I'll be working on cuz I know I'll never get the larger one finished by Tax Day. ::)
I wasn't at the EXPO nor did I ever have the pleasure of meeting Tom Schwarz however based on the touching things folks have written about him the spirit this thing should be to simply have fun and smile. :)
