This thread is a log of the life of Franklin & South Manchester Hopper Car number 838075.
Pictures, the story to-date and instructions for participation to follow. Stay tuned.
At the recent EXPO I had a discussion with George Sellios and Thom Driggers about the forum thread chronicling the travels of a AS car started by Tom Langford a few years back. I enjoyed watching Tom's AS travel the world generating revenue for the AS. I asked George if he would be interested and doing the same type of thread for a piece of rolling stock from the Franklin & South Manchester. With Thom Driggers help and motivation George weathered the hopper car number 838075 to model the heavy use seen on the Franklin & South Manchester. He then sent the car to the Superior & Seattle Railroad by way of interchange with Jimmy D's Pennsy and Dick Ellwell's Hoosac Valley (Thom will include pictures of these stops on this thread).
That brings us to the list:
1. George Sellios on the Franklin & South Manchester
2. Jimmy Deignan's Pennsy
3. Dick Elwell's Hoosac Valley
4. John Siekirk's Superior & Seattle
5. Tom Langford's Atlantic & Southern
6. Frank Baker's Morristown & Erie Railroad - Western Division
7. Bob Parish
I will keep up the list of stops for the F&SM Hopper Car on this thread. If you would like to host the car on your layout - post your request on this thread and send me a PM Message with your mailing address.
John ....
Let me know when a coal load needs to come to down town Idaho.

We will have a few simple running rules.
1) Don't ask for the car to be sent to you until you are ready for it.
2) If you have some local layouts that you would like to exchange with and photograph the car on please line it up when you know you are next on the list. For example - Tom Langford and I talked to this afternoon and he knows the car is headed his way the end of this week. He is already scheduling some stops while the car is in Florida. He will then ship the car out to Frank Baker in AZ where I'm sure it will be photographed on a number of layouts.
3) The car should never be on one layout more than 5 days the Franklin & South Manchester will loose way to much revenue.
4) This spot is reserved for any rules that I need to add.

Your on the list after Frank Baker if that works for you.
With the rules in hand from Superintendent John Siekirk. Here we go!
I'm at my desk Monday morning sharp in the Franklin dispatchers office, when I receive a call from the COO of the Franklin & South Manchester railroad telling me coal traffic is up and to order a new fleet of 2 bay hoppers lettered for the F&SM rr. I quickly send the order out to the buckeye state to commission new hoppers to be built and delivered for the Brass Hat at the F&SM home office.
George, not one for wasting time or revenue ordered that the car start generating revenue on it's way back to the F&SM. We pick up on the Pennsy Middle Division with CEO Jimmy Deignan first receiving the first car of the order #838075, an 2 bay open top hopper manufactured by the Accurail Co.
Pic #1 Shows f&sm car #838075 just loaded with "Broken" coal (that's 4" -8" size rocks for those keeping track) at Gobbler's Knob coal mine.
Pic #2 Shows Gobbler's Knob coal mine built by Dave Frary.
Pic #3 Shows a rare double header of F&SM equipment pulling a long string of hoppers from the Gobbler's Knob coal mine down to Dixon Yard.
Pic #4 Shows f&sm #6 leaving Saint Andrews to personally P/u the first hopper so the f&sm Brass Hat can get an early inspection of the car's overall manufactured quality before she goes into hard service.
Two weeks later we catch up with f&sm #838075 hard at work on the f&sm.
Pic #1 shows local engine #12 working a cut of cars with f&sm car #838075 and FSMRE #2016 right after the Expo show coming off the main line in Dovertown.
Pic #2 shows a view from one of the high rises next to the branch line.
Pic #3 shows the loco stopped at the tower with the crew getting their switch list.
Pic #4 shows a close up view of the not so clean new hopper. (Boy! it doesn't take long for rollingstock to get dirty on the Franklin & South Manchester does it!
Well it's Monday Morning again at the dispatchers office on the F&SM rr. when I get another call from the COO telling me to dispatch a revenue load of coal west to Bassi Coal Co. in Hoosick Falls a.s.a.p. It would appear a wash out of one the main lines just west of the Hoosac Valley rr. has delayed coal this week to the sister railroad of the F&SM. George not hesitating to assist in helping a fellow railroad, we now go to the Hoosac Valley railroad with the COO Dick Elwell.
Pic #1 shows f&sm #838075 being shoved out of Berkshire Jct. Yard on it's way to Hoosick Falls.
Pic #2 shows f&sm #838075 just set out at Bassi Coal Co.
Pic #3 shows the rear view of the duel bay unloading platform behind the structure in Hoosick Falls.
Pic #4 shows the car just after delivering her load. (the phone rings again), Guess what! Now Mr. Sellios tells me he wants the car dispatched to MI. on the Superior & Seattle Railroad and to let Superintendent Mr. Siekirk know car f&sm #838075 is on it's way to do a world interchange public relations tour in this "Worlds Greatest Hobby" Thanx Thom...
Hi John
I'm keen to be involved.
If you guys are feeling adventurous you can ship across the pond to Australia.
I hosted Tom's AS car when it was traveling the world so wouldn't mind doing likewise with George's.
Regards
Bagman
Great idea and of course modesty prevents me from taking credit for the first run. ;D ;D ;D
As Bagman stated, he also hosted my AS down under. The car made it to England, France and Germany. I believe it also made a revenue stop in Canada as well.
There will be a few stops here in Central Florida for sure.
Tom ;D
We would be happy to host the car on the Four County Society of Model Engineer's (FCSME) layout. We are only set up a few times a year, so we would have to coordinate the schedule so as to avoid any lag time.

Count me in on the fun Tom.....
I will add everyone that posts a request to the list and update it once a week.
Thom suggested that I take pictures of the unpacking process so I, and those that follow can remember how to package the hopper for shipment to the next layout.

Be advised that FSM 838075 has cleared the Eagle's Nest Yard on the S&S RR and has been added to a consist headed south.
Tom Langford please keep an eye out for it on the AS.

Apparently, there was a yard hold on the FSM Hopper Car. It didn't get to the post office (Sorry) I have been carrying it around with me all weekend in the Jeep because the Post Office was closed on Friday afternoon when my wife got there. I just got back home this evening from a visit to my daughters on the other side of the State. It will ship out tomorrow morning. Again, sorry for the delay.
Tom
The cars on it's way - let's see how many layouts you can exchange with in your area before you send it to Frank Baker out in AZ. The lady at the post office said it would be there by Monday at the latest for less than 4 bucks. The 2 day was over 20 bucks and overnight was 32 bucks. I decided that a 1930's vintage hopper car had no business on a bullet train so I took the $4 slow ride. We will be waiting for pictures.

John...
Could you please reverse the order for Karl and I. I am leaving for the PNR convention in Salmon Arm Canada and will return on the second of July. My fear is that if the order is left as it is the car will sit in my mail box for some days. The box is perfectly secure but.........
Put me in after Karl and then let me know who comes next.
I will e-mail Karl on the side with my address here in down town Idaho.
thanx

John...
Also ............ if you would add the road name....... Boise Nampa & Owyhee for the road name associated with me.

That'll be a great trip! I've been to Salmon Arm (twice, in the '90s when we lived in BC) and it's a great place in beautiful surroundings.

Dave.
Thanx for the encouragement. Vivian and I are turning it into a larger loop trip to Banff and Victoria and then on to Portland Oregon to my daughter, son-in-law and grand kids. Fun stuff.
It must be deemed criminal by some that after 40+ years in Idaho I've never made it to Canada................. Well here we go ! ! !
I'll probably be asked to judge at the PNR convention as I did two years ago in Tacoma. I really enjoy doing that with the new rubric that we are using........ thanx to Jack Hamilton ........... where the modeler may be present at the judging and field questions about what he attempted to do in the creation of the model. It is a much more comfortable venue for the modeler and less of a 13th Century inquisition.

A package from Clarkston, MI. arrived yesterday morning. Normally it would be like Christmas getting a package like this. However, I was forced by scenery demands to wait until this morning to open the package.

It was a wet rainy day on the Atlantic and Southern RR. It was so wet the yard looked like a plywood prairie. The Yard Foreman was walking the West Tahope Yard. Manchester Franklin was beside himself with what he saw. On the South inbound #2 track he noticed a lone F&SM hopper #838075 spotted.
"Those dang guys." he thought to himself, "They know that any inbound car is to be spotted on the #3 track."
He immediately radioed the tower to reroute the SAL Southbound freight due in 15 minutes. He then called for a yard switcher to move the hopper. He was then notified the Union was on strike due to the Diet Pepsi stock being below what the contract called for. Until the Diet Pepsi cooler was refilled, no work was to be done on the A&SRR.
It appears the cooler can't be filled until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.
About that time, SAL GP9 #1911, came through the yard literally at yard speed. The engineer wanted to see what fancy car had his loco rerouted. When he saw the name on the car, he said to his brakeman, " OH, that car is from the world famous Franklin & South Manchester RR owned by Mr. George Sellios. He went on the say that Mr. Sellios lives in Peabody, MA. and that he owes all his inspiration to the his Lord and some guy by the name of John Allen.
This photographer noticed the first car in the SAL freight was another world famous hopper from the Atlantic and Southern RR. For a ferroequinologist it can't get any better.
The F&SM hopper will remain on track #2 until the Diet Pepsi contract violation is corrected.
Tom,
Lol, Oh that is a good ol' funny story for sure! Love the pics of both Famous hoppers... Thanx Thom...
Tom.....you should have let the StL&D superintendent know about the Diet Pepsi shortage.....we keep plenty on hand for emergencies and would have be happy to send a fast freight down to resupply the A&S. ;)

Very much appreciate the help. I'm sure the union members on the St. Louis & Denver Railroad have less stringent rules.
Go ahead and issue the orders for the fast freight extra with a load of Diet Pepsi blister packs of 8 - 12 oz. bottles.
I'll teletype the A&S RR superintendent to watch for the load.

Butty Jim,
While the hopper is in the Orlando area, we need to get in on your layout. I'll give you a call in the next few days. We need to get it off the #2 track first. The President of the ST. L&D RR is shipping a load of Diet Pepsi to the A&S RR to get things moving, er, the hopper moving.

June 8th update - added color code and changed some spelling errors.
Although the Diet Pepsi caper is still on going, the St.L&D RR has offered to help. Butty Jim Miller, jimillho, offered to help as well, but all he offered was tea. While the carload of the Diet Pepsi is still in route, one salty engineer had his fill of all the nonsense.
With his 55+ years of being a steam locomotive engineer, he looked left to his fireman and said, "Lum, we're going in". Lum replied, "Okay, Abner, let's move the hopper"!
Abner said he had to make several switching moves to move the F&SM hopper but he was going to do it. After all, being on the job for 55+ years made him feel like he owned the railroad.
Abner's loco is an old Mikado type steam loco. For those not living around the A&S RR, it's also referred to a 2-8-2.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161419.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161419.jpeg)
Old # 835 backed onto the main headed for the wye. Once the loco was turned, old Abner, in old Mike #835, backed into the West Tahope Yard.

Old #835 coupled to the hopper and a yard hand set the air hoses. Abner then had to turn the loco on the wye to get the caboose.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161507.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161507.jpeg)
The caboose was coupled and then promptly set off on the siding.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161534.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161534.jpeg)
Lum and Abner set the F&SM hopper on the inside passing siding for pickup by the loco Tahope Coal train #1.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161550.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161550.jpeg)
Lum and Abner got their caboose and brakeman and went back to doing their own switching. Lum mumbled, "Damn union guys. They don't know what real railroading is all about".
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161618.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161618.jpeg)
In the distance the sound of three Pennsy Baldwin sharks were heard coming up the main. It's probably the Tahope Coal train #1.
In the mean time, this photographer saw these same two people waving. I thought these people have no clue as to what they are doing. However; I only said, "Hey, ya'll. George isn't in the hopper. What are ya'll thinking? Now get off the main, the coal train is coming and won't stop for you"!
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161646.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080616161646.jpeg)

"Ok, don't move, see if I care.", said I.

Jose must have felt the heavy vibrations of the three Baldwin Pennsy sharks. When I looked back he was gone.
No matter, the coal train was backing to pick up the F&SM hopper.

I believe the F&SM is going to the Pennsy. That will be fun as we can see it on Horse Shoe Curve, Tunnel Hill and other points of interest.
I guess I can safely say this is the end. I'm still waiting on the load of Diet Pepsi.

That's a relief - George is real careful with his rolling stock and we don't want anything to happen to that Hopper.

Great to see Tom's AS on it's home line with some very special company. Tom great pictures and story - I'm looking forward to seeing the Hopper on some other Florida layouts before it makes it's way to the really hot area of the country. I'm sure you have Frank's address.
Tom,
I copy cat John S... what he said, great pictures and great funny story! I for one, had fun taking the journey so far!!! Thanx Thom...
Hi Tom:
That hopper looks great on your RR.

Quote from: ACL1504 on June 08, 2016, 07:24:27 PMAlthough the Diet Pepsi caper is still on going, the St.L&D RR has offered to help. Butty Jim Miller, jimillho, offered to help as well, but all he offered was tea. While the carload of the Diet Pepsi is still in route, one salty engineer had his fill of all the nonsense.
Help is on the way.....a boxcar loaded with Diet Pepsi is on the way. The photo shows it leaving the StL&D Columbia yard behind old No. 2. They will be highballing it as fast as they can.
The FSM hopper #838075 is seen arriving at the Columbia yard of the St. Louis & Denver Railroad for some revenue opportunities after a profitable stop on the A&S rails.
Now, let's "go back to the future" when more of the empire is completed.
Let your imagination run wild and picture the empty hopper arriving at the Palmer Coal & Coke Tipple No. 2 to pick up a load of coal for Palmer Coal in Columbia.
Keep that imagination going and picture that loaded hopper dropping off coal at Palmer Coal in Columbia after a short run on the StL&D branchline.
Isn't it amazing what your mind can create.
Many thanks to George for providing the hopper so that we can all have a little fun and get to see some of our forum friends layouts.
Ole' #838075 will be returning tomorrow to A&S rails for forwarding to distant lands for more great adventures.
I'm very glad the F&SM hopper is full of coal now. The people of Tahope need it for the power plant. It was very generous of the President of the St.Louis and Denver Railroad to host the famous hopper.
While the hopper was being rerouted, the St. L&D sent a Frisco 40 PS1 boxcar over to the Atlantic and Southern RR. for the much needed Diet Pepsi. The Union strike would have been over was it not for the three days is took the St. L&D RR load to arrive.
It's a bit unclear why they chose to send the boxcar down behind some kind of Porter Mogul. In any event it did arrive.
The engineer was told to set the car off at the freight office next to the main station.
It was unloaded and all the Diet Pepsi cases got an armed guard escort to the A&S RR main office.
I guess it will take another three days for the Mogul 2-6-0 to return the Frisco boxcar to it's home rails.
Dang, that Jose sure gets around. I hope he's strapped in as if he sleeps there to long, he just may fall out. Well, that will solve at least one problem with the non revenue passengers.

The Board was glad to help a neighboring railroad in its time of distress and Diet Pepsi crisis.
FYI.....the Board is responsible for the delivery of the life saving elixir by ole' No. 2. It was their collective wisdom that the Porter Mogul be preserved, as it was the last wood burner to have run on the lines and holds a special place in the hearts of a few of the senior members.
They thought it would be an honor to have this special delivery made by such a historic loco. ::)
Just a thought.....might it not be a wonderful gesture on the part of the Pepsi company to distribute a few substantial grants to the A&S and StL&D for all the free advertising they get on these threads? ;)

Hmmm... I suspected the Mogul was crewed by Railroad executives who were not bound by the union contract. All those old guys who used to fire steam and got promoted to dispatcher, roadmaster, etc, was the only crew that could operate on the railroad.

Hi Dave.....your suspicions are correct and you should have seen the party those guys got when the returned. A well known local brewery furnished all the beer and the ole' boys consumed vast quantities of the free stuff. ;D
The Board was thrilled that the guys and the engine got back in one piece. ;D ;D ;D
The sun was poking it's shinny head through the Pennsylvania woods. Three men, all of whom have no desire to work, were up early. At least one of them was excited! Clem was poking the fire with a long branch being as he was to lazy to even stand. Slim had his head in his hands and leaned back on his log pillow. You see, Slim decided that poking the log to get the fire going was to much like work. On the other hand, the most excited of the three was Jim. He was standing by the fire banging out a tune on his banjo!
He was singing, "Tis coming round da mountin, here tis come. Tis comin round da mountin, here tis come. F&SM hopper tis comin round da mountin, comin round da mountin, here tis come." Clem said, "Be quiet Jim, ya want the local PoPo to eared ya and took usin in?" Jim replied, "I's ain't worried, nary one bit cause I'd eared the F&SM is comin round da mountin. I just gots to see its".

In the mean time, the famous F&SM hopper was spotted on a siding behind Langford Wood, also know for selling high quality lumber and roofing materials.
What this photographer finds interesting is the fact Langford and his Babe aren't waving at the hopper. And by the way, where is Jose. I expected to find him in the woods with the other three nonworkers. You see they all have in common that every day is Saturday.
The hopper was sent to the Pennsy, Six miles West of Altoona, PA by the Atlantic and Southern RR. There is certainly no telling how long the hopper will stay behind the lumber company.
At some point during the day, the hopper was moved to the coaling tower to drop the coal. Here a Pennsy H10 consolidation pushes the hopper back to the coaling tower.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171556.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171556.jpeg)
The brakeman is attempting to get the attention of the coal tower operator to verify the coal is to be dropped here.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171609.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171609.jpeg)
Horace, the angry coaling tower supervisor, is waving his arms saying, "The hopper is empty you idiot, get it out of here, can't you see I've got huge Pennsy locos to service."
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616183226.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616183226.jpeg)
The hopper was then spotted next to the huge Pennsy T1- duplex.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171622.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171622.jpeg)
Look at those massive M1 mountains double heading up the grade. They are pulling a long coal train up the Gallitzin grade. I wonder if the hopper is in this train?
It appears the Pennsy recognized the famous freight car and placed it directly behind the Pennsy M1s.
A few hours later, the hopper is spotted coming out of Tunnel Hill. Look at the smokey haze! That smoke is still coming out of the tunnel.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171704.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171704.jpeg)
WOW, lookie here, the hopper is now seen behind the Langford Wood and Lumber Yard. Who is that guy anyway? Don't tell me he is the guy with the Babe that waves at the F&SM hopper.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171716.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171716.jpeg)
Where is that Jose guy? Must be sleeping somewhere cause we know he ain't working.
Here we are at AR Tower. All Pennsy trains must stop here to perform a brake test before going down the Rat Hole.
Hey, is that an express ACL reefer in the train? Yep, sure nuff.
But where is the F&SM hopper? Oh, there it is behind the Pennsy Shark B unit.
Here the hopper goes into the Rat Hole.
The hopper is now well past Altoona and passing Kattanning Point headed for the very famous Horse Shoe Curve.
How lucky are we? Its a fly over Horse Shoe Curve. We see the F&SM hopper on track 4 behind three Pennsy freight units.
A Pennsy passenger train is passing in the opposite direction on track 2 being pulled by two Tuscan Pennsy PA units.
And there is the wonderful Pennsy K4 Pacific #1361.
This car is so famous that it takes two massive Pennsy SD40's to spot it for the next pickup.
Hey, I think that is Danny Raymond, (Raymo) watching the switching moves. Nice car there Raymo.
The travels of the traveling hopper car have come to an end on the Pennsy, six miles west of Altoona. The car is waiting to be sent to the Morristown and Erie Railroad oddly enough in Phoenix, AZ.
To be continued by the owners of the famous Morristown and Erie Railroad.
Nice job Tom presenting the F&SM hopper car. By the way, we found Jose. He was hitching a ride with Raymo near the coaling tower. Not sure where they might be heading.

George and I were talking about the thread yesterday and he was telling me how he's really interested to see all the great layouts the hopper car travels too! He's pleased to see so many people are having a good time setting up and hosting the hopper car. I must say I agree also. Thanks to John S. and Tom L. for having great ideas like this to involve the modeling community in sharing a common interest and thanks to George S. for sharing and participating. Thanx Thom...

NEWS FLASH !!! The Franklin & south Manchester Hopper #838075 has arrived and is being joined with Atlantic & Southern 3667 on the Morristown & Erie Railroad - Western Division. Two beautiful cars. I'll post some pictures later today.
Frank / Erieman
Franklin & South Manchester car #838075 was placed on a westbound fast freight thru the town of Ironia arriving at Little Falls to drop a load of coal at Wrisley Papers. The car was placed on the siding , passing Ezra Cooper's Garage on the front right and Little Falls General Store on the front left. Vehicular traffic in both direction on Main Street is halted as the car is placed at Wrisley Papers.
Frank / Erieman
Frank ....
Great to see that the hopper got to LV. That coal load load sure has a lot of miles on it. I'm surprised that the pay load has not sifted out through the doors by now and gone empty. I have a coal yard in Meridian Idaho that can top it off if necessary.
Great photos Frank
Thanx

Frank,
Hey! Glad to see the east coast hopper made it to the western side of the country. I wonder if it will make it all the way to the west coast? I know it's going to make it to other shore lines across the pond soon. ha.
Great pictures Frankie... I know George will be checking in on the pics soon. Thanx Thom...
Continuing our journey on the Morristown & Erie Railroad / Western Division with the Franklin & South Manchester hopper 3838075. (1)The F&SM hopper was moved from the Wrisley Paper siding by 0-8-0 #1406. The cars were moved to the nearby siding, couple to a few other cars and awaited RS3 932 to move them West on the railroad. (2) Engine 1406 adds Atlantic & Southern hopper to the consist
(3) RS3 can be seen approaching the siding in Little Falls to pick up the cars set out for movement West.
(4) RS3 has a green light to move the consist to the next block. The train will pass thru Great Notch (5) on its way. Great Notch is situated in a very small notch in the valley, yet there is infrequent passenger traffic. (6) RS3 emerging from tunnel 12 on the climb to Chester, which can be seen in the background.
More tomorrow

A railroad interchange happening. Tom's AS is now in Phoenix feeling the heat the rest of us in Arizona are experiencing. The car is probably so hot you can't sit down any where on it with out burning something.
The railroad is looking good Frank. I like you little detail work. Makes for a very interesting layout.

Thank you for stopping by and your kind words. The devil is in the details. Lots of details to be added to each scene before the layout actually gets photographed, but that's another day. Here are some photos that I took today. Enjoy.

Tom,
Too Damn humid to work any longer outside. Need to run a couple of errands, then into the train room and will take a few more pics. Thank you for your kind words, my friend. The nice thing about staging photos is you can hide all the uncompleted areas and there more than you know. The good news is that I am filling them. soon, real soon.
Off to Home Depot and the propane store.

Thanks Greg, good to hear from you. My kingdom is progressing slowly. One interesting fact is as I add all the scenery, the room seems to be absorbing a lot of the light. Kind of interesting. No I don't need glasses. Weird Phenomenon is all.
Frank / Erieman
Frank
I have noticed the same thing on my layout - I think it's less light being reflected.
Good Afternoon All,
I was down helping my neighbor on his layout today and took along the F&SM hopper. Russ models the Pennsylvania Railroad - Philadelphia Division. He has the high line behind 30th street station which looks great. He is currently working on the Baldwin Locomotive engine works in Eddystone. The is also a large roundhouse, engine facilities and yard area. Here are a couple of pics. Only the first pic has the hopper in it. Tomorrows pics will have more pics of the hopper on his layout. More will follow tomorrow.

You don't want much do you?! Only kidding. I'll mention it to him, but he typically is not into participating on forums. I certainly can do that if you would like. As far as plans, they eist only on a 30" 40" piece of foam board and have never been reduced in size. He might want to do that. I'll ask. Glad you enjoyed the pics.

Visited the Scottsdale Model Railroad Historical Society this morning to take pic of F&SM on their layout. This is a club layout with 40 members. The scenery is representative of Arizona. The layout is three years old and is almost finished ( until they make changes ). There are a lot of F&SM structures on the layout and i thought George would like to see some of them. so here goes. By the way, the club is located in the McCormick Stillman Railroad Park and is open to the public all year long. If you haven't been here, it is work a trip.

So Karl called this morning at seven and told me that the FSM hopper had been logged in at the interchange yard five hours earlier.
I jumped in the truck to get to the crossing where all traffic comes through Meridian after being picked up at the interchange.

So I caught up with FSM hopper today on its way back to the East Boise transfer where the electrics are pulled off and the steam is put back on for a return trip to Meridian.

But then....... They did what can only happen on a short line....... they stopped at Uncle Louie's Trolley Cafe for lunch while waiting for the steam to come out from Nampa.

On the way to Meridian they found a shipper's request for the car to go out of Boise with a load. So back to the coal yard.

I just got a telegraph back from Mike Engler - The Hopper has a lot of work to do while it in his area. Including a trip to the Narrow Gauge Convention that will take it back to the East Coast - Maine to be exact. It will then get orders for a trip to Australia.
Hi Bob:

So I put out the hopper on the siding today.

HI Bob:
Nice photos. I see you have caternary wire up (Or is it trolley wire)? If not how about a photo with an electric.
Karl
Karl...
About half of my railroad is under trolley wire as there was extensive trolley service in the valley here in downtown Idaho before 1928.
Back up a page in this thread to see a box motor and a steeple cab delivering coal to Idaho Power.
My operators don't seem to have it get in the way during operations and there are areas of the railroad where freight can only be moved by box motors. It makes for some really interesting switching. It took a while to get Ship It to play nice in the sand box about holding things apart. I had to dedicate some cars to keep cars over 40 feet out of the tight turns of the street railways.
The operators don't see it. They only see the transfer points where the steam comes off and the electric service begins.
see ya
Bob
Hi Bob:
Thanks for the detailed reply. Love to see one of those box motors with that hopper behind it.
Karl

Hi Bob:
Thanks buddy. I really like the center cab electric. Thanks for posting the pics.

Thanx. Karl
I scratch built that one about four years ago. I used two NWSL Stanton drive power trucks.
The whole thing is sheet brass.
See ya

Hopper number 838075 arrived in River Falls, Wisconsin this afternoon in fine shape. It was set out on a siding very near the road, so I transferred it to another siding on the Winona & Southwestern Ry., where it became the center of attention for the camera. Now I have to figure out how to post some photos and find out what the size limit is. Before it goes to Mike Engler, it will travel to Monticello, MN to run on Seth Puffer's Puffer Bridge Lines. That should happen early next week.
Art VanDeWater
River Falls, Wisconsin
Hopper number 838075 was pulled behind W&SW #375 as it headed for the town of Otis where it could dump its load. It was going to be a long trip and should arrive sometime on Saturday - stay tuned.
Art VanDeWater
River Falls, Wisconsin
The journey continues as 838075 leaves the Narrows and heads West towards Otis. Word was out to rail fans to be on the look for the hopper. It was seen by several rail fans at various locations along the route. Barring any malfunctions, it should arrive in Otis tomorrow.

Hopper number 838075 was dropped of at the siding in Otis and taken to the coaling trestle by the local switcher, where it will sit until Tuesday and then travel to Monticello, MN to run on Seth Puffer's Puffer Bridge Lines, before making its way to Mike Engler in Lakeville, MN. Stay tuned.

The F&SM Hopper looks great on your layout. Beautiful layout! I hope you will be open when the Narrow Gauge Convention comes to that part of the country.
Hello all,
My name is Seth Puffer and I am new to the Modelers Forum. I live in Monticello, MN, about 40 miles northwest of Minneapolis. My good friend Art VanDeWater of River Falls Wisconsin made the trip up to my layout on Tuesday with the "traveling car". Of course, we couldn't resist a few photos as it traveled the layout. I am very honored to be a part of this endeavor and appreciate the opportunity to share my photos with you.

Seth welcome , and may I say what a beautiful scene, I think I can speak for everyone here when I say , please show more of your layout, cause we love pictures.
Seth,
Welcome to the forum and like Jan said, very nice scene. I hope you will be posting more photos of the layout and the traveling hopper.
Tom ;D
I agree with Jan and Tom. More pictures, Seth! Welcome to the forum.

Hi Seth:

Seth
Welcome to the forum - Thanks for being part of the traveling hopper and for sharing your layout with us. Looks great! Oh and if you couldn't tell from the previous posts we love pictures.
Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your kind comments and welcome to the group. I do consider myself a fine scale modeler (as Art V. will attest). My layout is a freelance railroad and I really enjoy building kits and scratchbuilding too.
Here are a few more of the traveling hopper while it visited my layout.

I know we lost some pictures of layouts from Minnesota when our server crashed. Mike, Seth, Art, can you take a look and see if we can restore the pictures. I remember commenting on the pictures from some layouts that will be part of the upcoming layout tours for the 2018 Narrow Gauge Convention. Also, I'm looking forward to seeing the Hopper Car at the 2016 Narrow Gauge Convention in Maine.
I'll be at the NNGC, and also opening my layout for visitors on Wednesday and Sunday. Where will the F&SM hopper be?
Hi PBL;
Looks great on your layout.
Karl
Here's a repost of the FSM Hopper sitting on Gary Hanson's layout. This posted a week ago, but got lost when the server went down.
In 2018, The Twin Cities will host the National Narrow Gauge Convention September 5 - 8, and the last three layouts - Art VanDeWater's, Seth Puffer's, and Gary Hanson's will be on the home layout tour.

Thanks for reposting the picture Art. I'm looking forward to visiting these layouts for the 2018 Narrow Gauge Convention.
F&SM Hopper Car Update: I just got a report from Mike Engler that he is in the middle of sorting out a hard drive crash on his computer. That's extremely generous of you to say that Tom but don't get folks expectations built up.
There's a whole lot of layouts out there way better than mine, starting with the layout that the hopper car originated from !
Once I return from my vacation in Greece at the end of September, I'll send out a shipping request.
Again, kind words and thank you.

It sounds like you guys are going to have a great layout tour. I already have it marked on the calendar.
There are certainly some superior layout in that part of the country.

After a brief stay in Minnesota, and a trip to Maine where it didn't make any layouts (sorry James- you will have to get on John's shipping list), it will soon be heading down-under. It visited the Renner City and Western, and actually wound up on an HOn3 siding for a while. Stay tuned to see how we pulled that off. Only the sharpest viewers will notice.
Note in the foreground of the second photo what Postal Karl's real job is- he is an entrepreneur.
A few more tomorrow.

Hi Mike:
The F&SM hopper looks especially good in front of the Karl Scholz Truck Repair. Thanks for naming a building after me. It's an honor.
Karl
Yes, it does. Great diorama also.
Tom ;D
Great pictures Mike. You guys did a fantastic job implementing the HWAB technique. In your case it was hide it with a fence, a shed, and you pulled it off. The term HWAB was invented by Howard Zane - it stands for Hide It With a Bush.
I just got off the phone with Mike Engler - the F&SM Hopper is in the Yard ready for shipment to "the land down under" (at the postoffice). The yard master (post master) estimates 2 to 3 weeks for delivery which should be perfect timing for the work that is scheduled for it. I have been informed that I owe Mike a drink at the next Narrow Gauge Convention to help with the cost of shipment. ;) Mike we promise to keep you happy at the next narrow gauge convention.
Looking forward to the pictures from down under.

Thanks John. I hope a few others join in as a one-way fare on the USPS raft to Australia was $22.75.
Here are a few more of the getting-more-beaten-up-all-the-time hopper car, before it was boarded onto the raft for Australia. Hope it survives the storms, pirates, etc.

I built a special crate to move my Coal Dock. I built an "L" shape from 1x4 wood, padded the model, and then finished the box with an L shaped piece of cardboard. That box was 4' long!

Tom....too kind, too kind but thank you for your generous comments.
Here's a quick shot of F&SM # 838075 being switched from the Saranac Lake yard by NYC S-2 # 8530.
Boyce and Robertson are coal dealers in Saranac Lake. I used a Laser-Art Structures kit from Branchline Trains as the basis, along with custom lettering.
I'll get my act together over the next couple of days and get some more photos up.
Appreciate your patience.
Regards
David
Great start David!
Apologies as these photos dribble in.
Too much going on at the moment....which I guess is good in a way.
So here are a couple of shots of F&SM # 838075 coming into Saranac Lake with the local from Lake Clear Junction headed by RS-1 # 8105. The hopper was dropped off in the yard to be collected by S-2 # 8530 to be delivered to Boyce and Robertson coal dealers.
More to follow as the hopper is collected and continues its journey on the Saranac Branch.
David,
Great photos and a great looking freight train. Oh yes, the scenery looks fantastic as well.
Tom ;D
D~,
As usual I agree with what TL say's. Nice!!! Thanx Thom...
David
The Hopper looks great on your layout.
After leaving Saranac Lake RS-1 # 8105 crosses Rogers Brook on its way to Lyon.
Passing through Lyon with the FH&M interchange in the background.
The FH&M bought out the trackage rights from the D&H between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid in 1946. The railroad lasted 2 years before selling its trackage to the NYC.
Well on my railroad that's what happened but in reality the NYC actually bought the 10 miles of track that they shared with the D&H from them in 1946.
Here's a shot of NYC RS-1 #8105 with the F&SM hopper car in tow about to cross Chubb River on its way to Ray Brook.
More photos to follow.

Thank you Tom. Too kind.
After crossing Cubb River via the covered bridge we pass through the small town of Ray Brook.
Great layout and pictures. Very reminiscent of that area. Jim
Fine looking layout David. Keep on showing us where the Hopper goes next.

Here's a shot I forgot to post earlier.
F&SM hopper unloading at Saranac Yard coal facility.
Here's the hopper leaving Ray Brook, passing a couple of local industries.
Once out of Ray Brook the local crosses Route 35 on its way to Lake Placid.
Lots more scenery work to be done in this and following photos.
So we finally arrive at Lake Placid.
Here we the local crossing Main Street. As I said lots of detail work to be completed.
Once we cross Main Street we pass the station with train # 2, the daily passenger from Lake Placid to Utica that departs at 8.20am.
Finally the F&SM hopper unloads at the coaling station in the Lake Placid terminal. The coaling tower was based off the Central Vermont tower at Palmer MA and was built by Rich Cobb. A similar structure featured on Paul Dolko's New Hampshire Division of the Boston and Maine.
Whilst in Lake Placid the F&SM hopper dropped of a load at Lake Placid Coal.
This is in an area that I have just started working on, hence the lack of detail.
I just realised the F&SM hopper car must have magical rejuvenating powers as its dropped of quite a number of loads without actually being refilled anywhere !
It's been a real pleasure to host the F&SM hopper car. Thank you for sending all the way down under.
John, please let me know where I am to send the hopper car to next.
cheers
David

I sent you a PM with the error message I'm receiving when I try to email you. I tried again today with the same results. Hi All,
It's been nice to see all the great layout visits so far interchanging with the Franklin & South Manchester Railroad Hopper Car #838075. After receiving the hopper from Bagman from Australia, George wanted see how the car was doing being handled so much.
Truth be told, the membership has shown that the car could not only survive the mail travels, but also the many hands without so much as a scratch. That said I added a couple un-coupler lift bars to upgrade the detailing just a bit. So here are a couple upgraded pics. Thanx Thom...
Hi all,
Here we see the F&SM #838075 interchanging directly with Franklin, Hamilton & Essex railroad on the Hoosac Valley railroad. Here we see a couple quick pics of the Saranac Branch of the New York Central Adirondack Division local train with RS-1 #8235 running by the Hoosick Valley Station on it's way to the Franklin & South Manchester railroad. I followed the train down Old Valley road until I reached the crossing where I lost the train cutting through the valley. Thanx Thom...
Hi Everyone,
Now for a treat! After following the F&SM #838075 again from HV rr on it's return to F&SM rr I notice the Saranac Branch of the New York Central Adirondack Division train goes by a new structure next to John Allen Trestle.
The Otis Hidden Co. I believe they sell hay, coal, flour, grain, seed, feed and I think the kitchen sink also. ha. I tracked the train from a distant water tank located in Franklin outskirts on it's way to drop off the hopper at the Colbert yard coal tower to be filled and sent on it's way to Dr. Jeff Hawkeye country. ha. Thanx Thom...
Hi Thom
Please thank George on my behalf for interchanging my train on the F&SM.
Now if only it will look that good on my layout !
Love the new structure. See, it just goes to show that you can always make changes to your so called "finished" layout.
It's never finished. All it takes is the courage to rip something out and start afresh.
Bagman
I will tell him, but don't forget Dick Elwell hosted the same time spent on his layout also, pics posted above. ha.
Very nice pictures Thom. I see George is making changes again ;) . I love the new structure. Thanks for sharing the pictures with us. It's also good to see the hopper on Dick's layout. So I wonder how many miles are on that hopper already. Nest stop is out in Iowa. Dr. Jeff it's coming your way.

I will tell him, but don't forget Dick Elwell hosted the same time spent on his layout also, pics posted above. ha.
As I said Thom...clearly I need new glasses !
Totally missed the post on my train interchanging on the HV.
A thousand apologies for that.
Looks fantastic running on such a well known and much admired layout.
Please thank Dick on my behalf for being such a gracious host.
Very much appreciated.
Of course many thanks to you for being to thoughtful and taking my train to both layouts.
Your a good man !

Hi All,
It's been nice to see all the great layout visits so far interchanging with the Franklin & South Manchester Railroad Hopper Car #838075.
Thom,
We all respect George and his work so we were very careful with the hopper. The coupler lift bars really look good.
Thanks for the update.

Hi all,
Here we see the F&SM #838075 interchanging directly with Franklin, Hamilton & Essex railroad on the Hoosac Valley railroad.
Thom,
David's train looks great on the Hoosac Valley RR.
Thanks for sharing it with us. You did a fantastic job with the weathering on the cars.
Tom ;D
Hey, like John said, I also see a new structure at the John Allen Curve.
Looks wonderful!
Tom ;D
Tom,
Thanks for all the great lies comments ha. shhhh don't tell John S. but now he'll need to go to his pictorial of the F&SM structures and update the "The Otis Hidden Co." to his list. ha. Thanx Thom...
The F&SM hopper arrived on The Empire early this hazy morning. It transferred from out east via the NYC in Chicago and onto the Chicago to Minneapolis line of the CB&Q. It's on a through freight with a fresh load of eastern coal to be delivered somewhere on the Q. The engineer and conductor are getting their orders and should be moving shortly.
Finally underway and traversing the truss bridge over Buck's Run Creek and the Illinois Central. The once beautiful scenery here was destroyed when Godzilla got loose and his fiery atomic breath ruined everything in his path. The bridge and mainline were quickly rebuilt, but Mother Nature will have to restore the scenery.
We run by a local produce wholesaler on the mainline "makin' time".
"In the hole" waiting for The Morning Twin Zephyr to clear the mainline.
Arrival at the Division point yard. The North Coast Limited is leaving the station. Our F3s will pull off and let the local switcher do it's job.
Jeff,
The F&SM hopper sure passed through some fine looking scenes. The layout is looking good.
Tom ;D
Jeff
Great pictures. I especially like the scene with Bailey's. Your layout is really looking great.
Note to all: Jeff is sending the F&SM hopper back to the S&S RR so it can travel to a few local layouts while awaiting orders for it's next visit. If you would like to host the FSM Hopper please add your name to the list by posting to this thread and by sending me a PM with your mailing address.
The yard switcher is going to break down the train and add the F&SM car to a local going back east.
The train is made up and the next morning it's time to deliver the coal. Due to a motive power shortage, and since all the deliveries are close to the yard, the 0-8-0 can handle the job. First stop is to deliver an empty refer to Stuffy's Brewing. Looks like Stuffy had to call in the men in blue to help remove an over imbibed customer as the hopper passes by. Could that be our friend Bob P. in the red truck?
Yep, it's Bob all right, he's staked out a spot to watch the reefer being spotted.
Just chuggin' along.
Next stop is to deliver a box car of supplies to Forley's.
Need good communication between the switchman and the engineer, don't want to back it to far and go thru the building.
The crew went to beans, and by the time they got back and were delivering the car to it's destination, it was too dark for photos. No O. Winston Link here! The next day the near empty was picked up. The initial destination, run by a man with a white beard in a red suit didn't need all the coal (rumor was the local kids were good this year), but another local industry, Zepeda's heating could use the partial load, so the hopper was spotted there.
The next day, the empty hopper was returned to the yard. It was placed in a special train of cars from some of the greatest railroads ever, a "heritage train. This was run over the entire property.
Alas, it was time for our hopper to return east. Shunted into a train of empty hoppers, it was sent back to Chicago with connections to Michigan for further adventures. It was quite an honor to have an F&SM car on The Empire, and I want to thank George, Thom, and John for making it possible.
Jeff,
George & I say you are welcome! Your layout is looking good! You laid out the buildings and trackage well. Keep up the great modeling. Thanx Thom...
Jeff...
Great photos ..... great railroad.
I really like your 544 0-8-0 switcher. As you recall my dad worked for the Q and modeled similar hump top boiler steamers when he modeled in the 1940's.
The wide shot of 544 pushing the hoppers past the ware house is a really cool shot.
But..........
I don't recall my loaning you my red pick up for the street corner photo at Lightman's Army - Navy store.
Did you boys come and steal my truck again ? ? ? I better not find it out of gas in the garage ! ! !
Thanx for the photos
see ya
Bob
Thanks for the kind words Tom, John, Thom and Bob. In reality only the Forley's area of the layout has any scenery at all. All the rest of the pictures were "staged" on the layout or in my professional photo studio (picture one), the rest of the layout looks like picture two.
Jeff
Jeff,
L@@k out folks!, I think we got another John Allen with a camera, smoke and mirrors on our hands. ha. I don't care, it all still looks good and captures the imagination. Thanx Thom...
Jeff
Nice camera work! I thought I was way behind on your build thread. You have some really nice looking structures ready for planting.
Great pictures of the hopper and layout Jeff.
Is it me or does it seem that the FSM hopper car isn't making the rounds of as many layouts as previous traveling cars? :-\
Any chance of getting it to a bunch more layouts for display? ???

Anyone who wants to host the car just needs to post on this thread and send me a PM with their mailing address.
It could take a turn around my B&M Eastern Route (there's somewhat more scenery than when Tom's AS hopper visited, plus signals). I'm north of Boston, so I could easily pick it up or drop it off at the F&SM, or relay to other layouts in the area.

I will add you to the list. The car will probably be mailed to you from across the country. You will be asked to mail it to the next person on the list. I will update the list after the holidays.
The F&SM Hopper has been spotted on a couple railroads in Southeast Michigan this week.
The first sighting was on Richard Harden's - Chicago & Northwestern. It was added to a consist during our monthly operating session.

John,
I just got off the phone with George this morning, we were discussing an upcoming work session as well as modeling in general (as always). George asked me If I've been watching some of the on going threads being posted lately.
"Yes", I replied and he brought up several specifically one was this one on the traveling hopper car. George likes the latest new postings also. He's really impressed with all the great photos and stories being told about the layout operations.
George said following the stories of how the F&SM car traveling through the different layouts, has given him interests in seeing & following different layouts he normally wouldn't have know about otherwise.
George doesn't really post or replies on the internet, but he enjoys starting his day off with surfing the modeling web each morning & seeing what others are doing. I must say J.S. starting this thread and the others you've done have been very learned & interesting. Thank you and keep up the great work. Thanx Thom & George...
Hi John:
The F&SM hopper looks great on your RR and does your layout.

Hi all,
I was looking through from the beginning. Wow! The little hopper has been all over many really cool layouts. Hey! was curious. I wonder would it be cool if the car was to make it back to Frank Baker's layout again or someone's layout who Lou Sassi is going to film soon and it might be interesting to see the F&SM car gets filmed and make it to model railroader during it's tour through the modeling community. Good idear or a horrendous suggestion? What say the community? Thanx Thom...

The F&SM Hopper car has been rerouted back to:
Frank Baker's - Morristown & Erie Railroad - Western Division
I talked to Frank yesterday, the F&SM is on it's way back to him for the photo shoot. Another famous piece of rolling stock is also there.

I received a PM from James that the Hopper car had arrived safely. Looking forward to the pictures. Frank, if you read this I forgot to ask you this morning on the phone to post your pictures of the F&SM Hopper during your recent photo shoot on this thread.
Hello, everyone. F&SM 838075 has been spotted on the B&M Eastern route. I like to shoot photos like long-ago railfans did, so I hope this fictional narrative amuses rather than annoys you:
I got a caboose ride Sunday; my friend Joey and I were having a beer at the Flying Yankee last month and his uncle Slivers was there. He's an extra board conductor and we got talking about the railroad. Saturday night Joey called me to say Slivers was going up to Portsmouth in the morning for a Sunday freight extra and he'd asked if I wanted to go along. The weather was supposed to be nice, so I hot-footed it over to Slivers' house early in the morning. We rode up on #2209 and hung around with the rest of the crew till the westbound freight came in. Maine Central Mikado #622 was the power, but my camera's shutter was too slow for the angle and lighting. I tried a few more near Newburyport, which came out so-so:
We'd been moving pretty fast; I could hear 622 working up ahead, even when we were on the level. The old Eastern RR laid out a really straight, flat railroad across the coastal plain and salt marshes and the crew decided getting home quick was the best plan back in Portsmouth. Only a few of the photos I took around Rowley came out:
Clouds started to roll in as we passed Ipswich; I love that Kodachrome in full sun, but I learned the hard way that shooting in shade just wastes your money. But so does pulling a part roll out of the camera, so I only tried a few shots the rest of the trip. This one, when I caught a patch of sun just before we went into Bexley Tunnel, came out OK:
James,
Absolutely love the pictures coupled with the backstory. Felt like I was standing right next to you! Great job! Thanx Thom...
James
Excellent pictures and narrative! I really enjoyed the ride. Thank you for hosting the F&SM Hopper on your layout and sharing it with us.
Once I got my pictures back, I thought the story was over too. But at the next Railroad Enthusiasts meeting, I found out Joey had put the word out: All my attention was on the train ride, I didn't even notice the guys staking out both ends of Bexley Tunnel. And most of them had taken a picture of me on the caboose's front platform.
Two other guys gave me prints at the meeting. One had been at the Chipman Street bridge - the box pony sides are too high to shoot over without a milk crate to stand on, so he was down by the King Arthur mill's ash pile. My friend Doug was on top of a boxcar across from the Acme building in West Lynn.
It was another two weeks till I stopped by the Flying Yankee again. Joey and I had been out on Mr. Rogers' party boat (Wilbur's all-year job is being a B&M engineer). What do you know, but three of the Newburyport RRE crowd had also taken pictures of my caboose ride. One had shot #622 going away at Merrimac St. Another had been on the Rt. 1 overpass. A third heard the whistle while he was snacking at the Clam Box on Rt. 1A in Rowley.
Finally, two months after my ride, I was having dinner at my Great Aunt's house when my cousin pulled an envelope out of her purse. She'd told the story of my ride at lunch one day, and one of her gal pals had said, "Oh, that must have been your cousin that my husband saw; he'd taken Junior out to Robinson Rd. to see what was going on at the Bexley yard."
That concludes my bit of old-time railfan fiction. Haying and volunteering at Seashore Trolley Museum (near Kennebunkport, ME) have me pretty busy, but I should be able to get F&SM 838075 to the proper interchange in the next day or two.
Very nicely done James.
John,
Haven't heard anything on the F&SM hopper car in a while. Hope it wasn't lost in a derailment somewhere. Where's it at these days and is it traveling to other great layouts and dioramas' some more? Thanx Thom...

The F&SM hopper is currently in a yard hold, awaiting orders, in the Eagles Nest Yard on the Superior & Seattle RR. I plan to take it to the NG Convention next week where it will end up traveling on the layout tours.
K, those should be some cool pics then. T...

Did the F&SM hopper car make it back to George's yet?
Hey, where's the F&SM hopper car at?
Thanx Thom...
The Hopper made an appearance in the latest issue of Great Model Railroads. See Frank Baker's layout.
Since it's been more than a year since the hopper has been requested I will be packaging it up and sending it home to the F&SM. Thank you George for opportunity to host the hopper on my layout and also I thank you for all of the other forum members that participated. This has been a fun project.
Here is the final list of layouts.
