Title: 2018 National Narrow Gauge Convention - Bloomington, MN
Post by: NEMMRRC on September 03, 2018, 07:48:09 PM
Greetings one and all.

It's National Narrow Gauge Convention time once more.

2018 brings us to air-conditioned Bloomington, MN. I think that is right there with the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. I'm expecting some excellent modeling at this convention since it's THE Runner's stomping grounds and I hear they retired the Best Of Show Award and just decided to leave it on THE Runner's mantle.

Follow along as the convention gets started. Early registration beings today (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday) there is a steam excursion in the North Shore of Lake Superior.

I decided to begin my convention experience by tasting a local delicacy, fried cheese curds.

More as the convention develops.

Glad to see your jersey come out of retirement.
Remember, we LOVE pictures, but watch out for the $16.00 FSM kits. They ain't necessarily what they're cracked up to be.   8)

Bad news - no steam.
Good news - it's still a train ride and I'm not at work

Here are a few more photos of the train excursion yesterday. It was a dreary drizzly day but it was still a fun time riding an old passenger coach and enjoying the North Shore scenery along Lake Superior. I was very surprised how much the scenery reminded me of the Pacific Northwest. Maybe I should get out more often.

There were quite a few rail fans along the route. The track parallels one of the highways as well as the scenic route along the sores of Lake Superior.

Soo Line 2500 replaced the out-of-service streamer that was to pull the period consist. Any locomotive older than me is "vintage" in my book  ;D

Some more info - I have spent a ton of time at the Bar Mills booth talking to Art and Jack - very interesting and likable guys.

The kit, called Dovertown Wharf, is $335 plus $15 for shipping. Shipping expected to begin on Dec 10 or so. That includes the entire diorama, including figures and a truck (and the usual Bar Mills goodies) but does NOT include the boat. Instead, Art said you will get a coupon to get 30% off of the boat model of your choice from Seaport Models (seaportmodelworks.com) if you order within one year of getting your Dovertown Wharf kit.

The kit is gorgeous. Genuinely looks the diorama was plucked out of the F&SM. Needless to say, I ordered one. What I am going to do with a waterfront kit when I'm modeling Central Illinois? Well, as my signature says, I'm protolancing. I might need to call in the Army Corps of Engineers to move the Kankakee river a little north. I can't help it. I just love the scene. BTW, in some discussions with Art and Jack, they said they are contemplating a few improvements to the kit before actually shipping. No matter what they do, it will just make it a better kit.

FYI, Art said that he will get the kit up on barmillsmoose.com sometime late next week. He won't get back from the show until late Monday night or so. Then, of course, he'll need a couple of days to update the web site and maybe do an intro video. I would say take a look on Thursday for it and it will probably be there Friday for sure. I reckon this will be at least as successful as last year's Christmas kit. I would bet much more so.

oh yeah, despite my lack of waterfront real estate, I had to have the new Bar Mills release...no questions asked, " take my money Art!"... that's a beauty.

I'm also really intrigued by the Brandon geodesic rock system. The way you can shape outcropping sand overhangs, etc makes me want to be much more dramatic in my scenery planning. I plan to order what I'll need today. Great clinic too by Joel Bragdon- he had that passionate "Mad Scientist" love for the product and the hobby. I'll go to his water clinic today.

My other big purchase was the Sierra West work train. Brett's stuff is so great and this is one I can take chunk by chunk (over years, if needed) and fill my sidings with craftsman structures without glomming any more real estate.🏆...I've been drooling over this kit in contest rooms for years.

Also grabbed some of Jimmy's FSM castings and some Scenic Express stuff.

Great layouts in the afternoons with John S. And Raymo. Looking forward to Forum dinner tonight

This NNGC is running like a Swiss watch. Mike and his gang should be very pleased and proud. I'm very inspired and motivated to get back into my layout room- so I'd call it a success.

I stopped by the Bar Mills booth again to see if I could shoot a few pictures of the new super kit without the plexiglass cover on. Turns out Art couldn't remove it and recalled that they had a heck of a time wedging the diorama in there before they brought it out. Might have a heck of a time getting it out when they get back to the shop.

In its place, Art sent me one of the pics he took before they covered it up:

Remember, the big boat you see is not included but the little rowboat you see in the lower right is included. Also, the diorama ends at the stone wall so that lighthouse and other buildings you see in the background are not included.

The kit is very striking in person.

If you're wondering, no, I'm not affiliated with Bar Mills and am not compensated for being their newest fanboy. However, I did get a Bar Mills badge with my name on it today from Art and Jack. Apparently, I'm their new VP in charge of being a PITA.

I did take a few of my own pics thru the cover. I'll pull them off my phone when I get home and post them if they're any good. In the meantime, you'll see the real stuff later next week on barmillsmoose.com as I mentioned before.

Cheers.

That new kit from Bar Mills is a real winner!  I'm sure it will sell out in record time.  I took some good photos of the original back in 2015 - its always been a favourite.  Have fun spending all your hard earned cash - I am a little jealous!  Any $16 FSM kit purchases yet?

Back home in Chicago, safe and sound. I had a very good time time at the convention. Was great to meet a few of the forum names in person. I didn't know what to expect as this was my first convention of any kind, but I was pleasantly surprised at the clinics and all the great stuff to look at -- including the vendor exhibit. Sue (my wife) and I even had a chance to do some non-railroad activities (site-seeing, hiking, driving home along the Mississippi) so she enjoyed it, too.

Hats off to Mike Engler and all of the activity chairs for a very well managed event. And thanks to all you forum members for reaching out to say hello to me. Hopefully this will help me engage in some more direct interactions with some additional forum members.

(http://modelersforum.com/gallery/760-070918212028.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/760-070918212028.jpeg)

Cheers.

For a number of years I've had my eye out for a reasonably-priced (HA!) Emporium Seafood. Looks like I just found it. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Congrats to Sam Swanson, one of my favorite modelers, for his Best In Show module. I've been to his seminar and was amazed to learn that he models wood structures with plastic. Really really great finish work to simulate old wood. It never occurred to me that that module was his-are those structures plastic as well?

On another note, no disrespect to Sam's fantastic work, but to me, Don Railton's builds always blow my mind...he's the GOAT!

Great job Mike Engler and the rest...fantastic convention!

Yep. When I first saw the dio, my first thought was "Emporium Seafood meets Fox Run Milling." My guess is that both Dovertown Wharf and my Emporium Seafood will end up on the same fictional body of water that I have yet to dream up (the "lancing" part of my protolancing).

I'm back at the S&S RR Headquarters. Fantastic convention - Mike and his crew did a great job - thank you guys for all the hard work. It's always fun to see all my old friends and to make some new ones.

I took a lot of pictures on the layout tours (visited 16 layouts) - I will be sharing them on the forum as soon as I get time to process them. Minnesota and Wisconsin is home to some wonderful modelers - thank you to all that opened their homes and layouts to us. We managed to get Jaime out of the contest room a couple of the afternoons to join us on the layout tours.  Jaime thank you for all the hard work taking pictures, preparing the presentation, and keeping everyone on the forum up-dated.

I just want to thank the forum members (and NG convention attendees) who made the drive to my layout last week.  It was nice putting a "face" to the names I see often here.  Most of you will never know how much inspiration you have given to me by your fine model building.

Thank you for opening up your wonderful layout for us. Fantastic modeling - a real inspiration.  The team did a great job - one of the best NG conventions. I had a great time.

It is fun being at these shows and I'm glad I am bale to share the photos with the group here. If it weren't for THE Runner I wouldn't have been asked to make all these photos of the models in the contest room. It was a privilege and I appreciate it a lot.

Be sure to check out my website (http://www.narrowperspective.com) where I have photos from all the narrow gauge conventions I've attended. Download as many photos as you want as Jimmy Deignan is kind enough to pay that internet bill  ;D  Just be sure to visit Jimmy's Railroad Kits (http://www.railroadkits.com) website and buy some FSM castings.

That is pretty much all the winners of the model entries. There is of course the winners of the photograph entries. I've chosen over the years not to post photos of the winning photo entries. This is due to various reasons I won't get into here. But, let me tell you that each winning entry was fantastic. Maybe you will make it to a narrow gauge convention one day and see for yourself.

I have lots of photos of the layouts on tour I attended. I am hoping others that were present at the convention will post some of their photos as well. So stay tuned for more to come as it comes...

I have some photos of layouts from the convention.  These will not be near the quality of Jaime's, so don't get your hopes up too high.   :) The first is an HO scale layout built by the late Bill Briggs.  The Musselshell & Yogo Peak Railroad.  Modeling Montana in the '60s.  Even though he has passed on, the layout will be donated to a local museum for exhibition.

Next is probably my favorite from the convention.  Dave Hamilton's CB&Q River Division in HO.  We model kinda the same area of the "Q".  His is set in the late 60s.  He was very interesting to talk to about the Q (and airplanes and Corvettes).  I could have spent the whole day there speaking with him.  I didn't take many pictures of the actual layout due to chatting.  I often take pictures of fascia, control panels, etc.  This is to help me decide how to do them.

On either side of his swing door to get into the layout he had 1/2 Atlas rerailers.  He said he had no further derailments after crossing the swinging door after he installed these.  He had full ones on the door.

Gerry Leone's Bona Vista Railroad (HO).  I really liked the black fascia and pleated curtain under the layout.  I plan to try something similar.

John Niemeyer's D&RGS/Gilpin, James Peak and Middle Park Railway HOn3 and HOn30.  The layout room was dark to show all the lighting effects in the buildings, etc.  He said there was a miner's hat with a light somewhere on the layout, but I didn't find it.  The dark pictures are the actual room lighting, the lighter ones were taken with longer exposures, but they are a little fuzzy as I didn't have a monopod.

In the first picture, the figure on his back on the ground has been hit by a car.  He's holding a sign that says "The End is Near".   :)

Steve Doyle's CB&Q Lines East.  This was in S Scale.  The city scene is supposed to represent Chicago.  It is intentionally dark.  The bright picture was with a flash.

He also states it's supposed to be a journey along Route 66. So there are some quirky roadside architecture elements.

I was great seeing so much CB&Q motive power on a finished layout, unlike my own.   ::)

Next up is a layout by some guy named Mike Engler aka "THE Runner".  We need to find out how he got that nickname.  The layout is basically a showcase for his incredible dioramas.

Mike cleverly built this on cabinets so he could have storage under the layout.  Who would have though a Minnesotan would be clever?  (We Iowans are not impressed by Minnesotans.  ;D ).  I didn't have a chance to ask about the backdrop, I don't think it's one of the purchasable ones, and it really looks good.  Mike, where did you get the pictures and how did you do the backdrop?

Finally, Jeff Otto's Missabe Northern Railway in HO scale.  I took more pics of this layout than any other for a few reasons.  One is I'm not a fan of two level layouts (only part of his is two levels).  One level is usually too high and the other too low.  His seemed OK, partially because the way he tapered the upper joists so the fascia is narrow, improving the sight lines.

There are no switch machines, just push/pull knobs.  These are also used for movable uncoupling magnets, so you don't need to reach over/under the upper deck to uncouple.

The railroad is built for operation.  Custom car cards, maps of switching areas, etc.  help "move the freight".  There are 1040 ore cars alone on the railroad.  :o

You're welcome, Jaime.  One thing that interested me on this layout was the minimal scenery.  He's basically just used cardboard strips, butcher paper, newspaper, glue, paint and ground foam to outline the scenery.  No open grid/Plywood Pacific (like my railroad).  I think this is a great way to get the topography started and get it to look better than just plywood/pink foam.  Later he can go back and tear it out if he doesn't like it with not much time/expense involved.

Pictured below is mike all happy with his Twin Mills diorama.
This diorama won Mike Best of Show at the 2009 National Narrow Gauge Convention in Colorado Springs.
I made some photos of the diorama and posted them online and that is how I met Mike. The rest is history.
Mike has been a wonderful friend and mentor to me.
Folks like Mike make model railroading such a rewarding hobby.

Art VanDeWater - HO HOn3 Winona & Southwestern Ry Co

Art is yet one more of the Minnesota mafia.
I first met Art at the Craftsman Structure Shows in Mansfiedld, MA back in 2007 or 2008 or so. I've been running into Art at every major train show I've attended ever since.
It was such a pleasure to visit Art's wonderful layout.
