I will be adding a few pictures of the layout tours and contest room from the 2019 Narrow Gauge Convention in Sacramento, CA, here in the next few weeks. I'm downloading the pictures from the iCloud as I'm getting this thread started. Please stay tuned - this will take me a while to complete.
Alright !!
I sure do miss having been there.
Thanks.
Jaime
Been waiting for this...so bummed I couldn't make it this time. Thanks for the effort John!

Jaime and John
I missed having you guys there. I was amazed at the number of first Narrow Gauge attendee's.
Thanks John. I am looking forward to seeing your photos.
;D ;D 8)
John really looking forward to the pictures.
Thanks for going and making up for those who couldn't make it!!
Jerry
Thank you to all that posted encouragement to get this thing going. I decided to start with the contest room and the best of show winner. After the best of show I will be posting the pictures in the order that I took them. My goal is to post a few pictures a day so it doesn't keep me away from building the layout for too long. I walked the contest room taking pictures during the normal open hours and tried to get everything, but I may have missed some models, sorry if I missed yours. You may find someone you know in the background. ;) Enjoy.

You are welcome. I don't have the names of the builder's. They were presented very quickly at the Saturday night meeting and I couldn't take notes fast enough to be accurate, so I decided to wait for the Gazette to publish them.

John,
Thank you so much for the photos. I hated to miss the convention but can no longer travel.
The O scale sawmill was built by Brian Block. It won the Best in Show and the Gazette Award and a few others.
This sawmill was featured in the Gazette a couple of years back.
Brian has won many awards over the years at Narrow Gauge Conventions.
Many people don't recognize his name as he does not do the internet.

I met Brian at one of the past conventions. He was working your booth/table at the dealer room. Really great modeler. I was very impressed with his model of an aboned mine. I believe he brought it to the Pasadena convention. I need to dig up the photos I made of that model.

John,
Thanks for the great pictures. Do you have any pictures of the Baitshop diorama?
Frank
I called Brian Block to ask if he built the Corner Lobster Bar.
Indeed he did.
His O scale sawmill won Best in Show and his Corner Lobster Bar won the Gazette Award.
He sent me a photo of all of his awards but could not read them all.
The Gazette will eventually have them all listed.
The more I looked at the Corner Lobster Bar the more I thought only Brian could build that model.
Thank you so much for sharing the photos.
Incidentally, I have uploaded several of my video clinics to Youtube.
You can find the one on Rusty Metal at this link:

Once there you can also find my other video clinics.

You are very welcome. I feel very blessed to have the time, money and health, to attend the Narrow Gauge Conventions, there has been years where it was not possible. I have always appreciated someone posting the pictures from their trip. Jaimie has done a great job over the years to name one - there have been many others. The Narrow Gauge Convention has always been a source of great modeling knowledge and inspiration. I will keep posting pictures over the coming days.

Thank you, this is it for the contest room pictures. I will be starting the layout tour pictures, soon.
Thanks for the pics (and the ones to come)...anyone know where the website for next year's NNGC is? I would have expected it to be up, if a little barren, by now. I need to have it on my bookmarks bar to remind me.

I got this from a card at the convention. It works I booked my room. A google search failed to find it last week.
40th Narrow Gauge Website:

So John, I was watching this video by the Toyman of the Narrow Gauge Convention in Sacramento. I came across the section on the entries for the photographs. I was stunned to see a photograph of a model sawmill. This is my sawmill which was 1st place for scratch built display at the NMRA convention in Salt Lake City.

I didn't take any pictures of the photo entries - so I can't reference the photograph you are talking about.
Tonight, I'm going to get started on the layout pictures. My first layout was Jack Burgess' - Yosemite Valley Railroad. I have been following Jack's work for many years and it was great to see his layout in person.

I tried again and found it. I think I got too aggressive with the skip the adds button.
I have a program called ad remover and it is great. No Ads!
John......
I got a solo visit to Jack's railroad many years ago. It is a great railroad. He has made a lot of changes since I saw his railroad. It is my visit with him that I made the weathering move to chalks with no sealer.
The story is......... we had been operating for well over an hour and we were talking about his weathering. He announced that he does not use a sealer. I asked how he keeps the chalk from going away when the cars are handled. "No one touches my cars!" he stated. He has a specific way of handling them from the trucks and hardly brushes against the body of the car.
Then I thought about it for a moment........ we had not had a single derailment in way more than a hour of steady operations. OK................. that alone impressed me.
Upon returning home I started on experimenting with various chalks and settled in on some Bragdon but mostly artists pastels and shave them into small jars with an x-acto blade. I applied the chalks with a soft dusting brush. I also discovered that after a time of warming and cooling of the rolling stock in regular room temperature shifts, the chalks get pulled into the paint and become pretty stable. Thanx Jack.............. you go me off of high center.
see ya
