Baggage Car - Daily Chat / Saturday, January 15th ?
January 15, 2022, 08:09:29 AM
Good Morning All,

Hopefully some train time today. Had a possible exposure from youngest grandson so we got tested which ended up being negative but wasted 3 hours.

I hope everyone has a good day.

Afternoon All,

Unfortunately I don't have a decent picture to post of the structure but it appears to be 3 main buildings and some small attached sheds. Today I started on the Tichy window frames. I first painted them with Rustoleum Kahki. After that I used a makeup sponge to put on the red highlight color followed by 2 coats of A&I. To finish up today I sorted the different size wood strips. Tomorrow I plan on A&I'ing the wood strips and start on the bag of detail parts.

The colors that I am using are:

Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black for the interior and mixing winto the red.
Tamiya XF-5 Flat Green for the walls
Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red with Flat Black mixed in for wood trim and walls.

Good Morning,

Taking Dad to VA today to pick up new hearing aids. I'm not happy with the static grass I put alongside a dirt road so I need to remove it.

I hope everyone has a good day.

Baggage Car - Daily Chat / Sunday August 29th
August 29, 2021, 08:01:09 AM
Good Morning All,

Spending the day at Dad's.  Yesterday I ballasted another 10 ft. of mainline. I have about 15 ft. left, unfortunately most of it is 3 tracks wide.

I hope everyone has a good day.

Good Morning All,

I can't believe that I'm the opener today and it's later than 8 am. Going to Dad's today, we found someone that is taking all the books (at least 500+). That means they don't have to be boxed up and moved by us.

Had a great time at Tom's yesterday with the SBG. I needed it badly.

I hope everyone has a good day.

Kit Building / BTS Cabin Creek Mine
August 04, 2021, 07:39:51 PM
This is my current build started back in January. The pictures today are of a hill I had to build for the mine legs to sit on.

In the first photo the brown section is plaster cloth covered WS risers. I then used cardboard strips attached by hot glue. The wood faces came in the kit but bracing and NBW's (in kit) had to be added. I stained them in Hunterline Creosote stain. I added two flat pieces of wood painted in MM Aged Concrete to simulate "footers" for the wooden legs.

In the second photo the stripes are covered with plaster cloth, painted and ground cover applied.

Good Morning,

I can't believe I'm first. Brothers are driving down from VA and will be here tonight. I'm getting blood drawn then meeting Dad for breakfast to talk about facilities for Mom then I'll be at the hospital today.

I did manage to run a train yesterday for about 10 minutes.

I hope everyone has a good day.

Layout Tours / PRR Bellevue Sub Build
June 07, 2020, 02:32:45 PM
I've completed the buildings that I wanted to build before starting the layout. I purchased heavy duty adjustable feet and attached them to the painted legs and have painted the beg bracing.

Greg DeMayo helped me out by producing a CAD drawing of the benchwork that I use to determine what lumber I need. I have purchased the wood for the first 2 modules that go against the left wall of the trainroom. Unfortunately the humidity and rain the last 2 days have stopped progress since I need to build the modules in the driveway.

Kit Building / FOS Hendrix Style Foundary
May 13, 2020, 03:17:20 PM
Afternoon All,

I started out with the hydrocal walls by spraying them light gray. Afterwards I used wet weathering powders to randomly paint stones then did a heavy (intentional) wash of Tamiya German Gray (grimy black). I want this kit to look very dirty but not falling apart.

Hello Everyone,

I built 3 small kits prior to this (BTS Company House, AMB Company Houses (3), and Blair Line Truck Coal Dump). I decided to start small since I haven't built anything in about 6 months because of the layout tear down. The plan is to build all my major structures then start on the layout. I don't do very well jumping from project to project.

I have been working on this kit for about 10 days now and it is by far the most complicated kit that I have built but I love the look of it and B.T.S. did a great job putting it together. They even pre-drilled the NBW holes! I figure I still have about 10 more days to go with it. I hope you enjoy the build as much as I do.

First I would like to give a big thank you to Tom. The last time we were at lunch I mentioned what project I wanted to do next and he said he thought he had one, he did and he gave it to me.

This will be a single posting for the build since it is a pretty easy kit to build. The biggest issue I had was cutting out the preexisting approach which was 2 1/4 inches high and putting in a 1 3/8 high one. I used Woodland Scenics risers for the basic structure.

I received the FOS Gardiner kit for Christmas, finished the freebee kit and am now getting ready to start on the main kit. I plan on several modifications. The lean-to on the front right side will be moved to the back and I plan on extending the platform the entire length of the front and possibly add a extra door or two.

I have decided on Tamiya XF-9 Hull Red as the trim and can't decide on either the Tamiya Flat White XF-2 or the Tamiya Buff XF-57 for the main wall color. Any suggestions?

Kit Building / HO FOS Preston Printers
October 08, 2018, 04:50:29 PM
First thank you to Jim Donovan and Dave K. for their help with downsizing photos.

I just received a Preston Printers kit in HO, so as I make the journey of discovery I will share my progress. The kit recommended off-white for the walls and dark green for the trim. Based on this I will use Tamiya Flat White, Tamiya Flat Field Grey (Greyish Green) and Tamiya Flat Buff (bare wood). The bottom part of the walls are stucco.

After reading the directions several times I still had several questions so I sent a email requesting clarification to Doug at FOS scale models.

Today I removed all the wall and roof wood parts, then I sanded all the edges and put A&I, Field Grey, and splotches of Buff on the wood trim.

Scratchbuilding / Freight Depot Platform
May 08, 2018, 03:28:47 PM
I'm not sure if anyone is interested but I am doing a scratch build freight depot and almost all depots have some sort of platform. The platform I just finished is 22" x 5" and has a concrete base with a wooden deck on top of that. Thank you to Greg for the answers to my initial questions he provided.

The wooden decking are NESL 2x8 strips cut to 10' lengths then stained with Hunterline Medium Brown. Every 4 or 5 rows I put a square on it to make sure it wasn't starting to veer off square. I used 11 or 12 packages of the 2x8's and the actual construction took about 12 hours.

This is what was originally on the layout and the changes.

Afternoon All,

Well I finally got started on my project. This is my first scratch build and it will replace the Walther's Sand House and Sand Pit I currently have. I will also need to design a support tower to support a supply pipe from the house to the existing track sand dispenser.

I previously completed the measurements and did some drawings to help me with the project. Today I cut out the 4 walls and the spaces for the windows and doors. I was a bit rough on one window but I can make it work.

It may be Thursday before I can do more work on the project due to Grand Parent duties this week.

Kit Building / AMB Interlocking Tower (Kit #702)
July 08, 2017, 03:31:34 PM
Afternoon All,

Since my Saturday plans were cancelled by weather I decided to start the kit today instead of tomorrow. Today I painted the inside of the tower. The lower part was painted with Tamiya Flat Black and the part you will be able to see is a Medium Foliage Green (craft paint). I painted the floor Asphaltium (craft paint). The roof supports were painted the flat black also.

I was cheap so I built a tower lever machine that will go inside. It looks unimpressive in the photo, but I think it will be OK when inside the tower.

I ordered shingles from wild west models for the roof of the tower instead of the provided tar paper. I did this based on a conversation with Greg when we met at Tom's.

I completed the kit today. It was pretty basic so I didn't want to do a full thread.
