Title: Removal of old layout from benchwork down and more.
Post by: ACL1504 on December 20, 2013, 06:54:39 PM
I thought it would be interesting to document the removal of my old layout. I don't think there has ever been a thread on removing a layout and all that is involved. I've certainly learned a few things in the process. I'll share them as I get more into the thread.

I have about three dozen photos to crop to start with and I'll be posting them soon.

Well, let me say that if you decide to remove your old or existing layout, make dang sure you have the desire, fortitude and a plan in place when you do. I had the first two but had no clue what was in store for me. I had a very severe case of "a lack of understanding" about the demolition of a layout!

Those of you who know me and have followed my threads, my desire wasn't the issue at all. I have the fortitude to begin the demolition and here is the proof.

Also, since I would be taking hundreds of pictures of the new build and the demolition of the old layout, I needed to keep the pictures separated.

I labeled my old layout photos as LO and a number, such as LO1 - etc.
For the other two threads I came up with this:

NLO - New Layout to document the new build when it actually begins. The photos on the new layout thread as currently posted are just labeled for what they are.

DOL - Demolition of old layout.

When I added my last addition it was obviously empty. I had plenty of room to store stuff and add to the layout. With the existing layout in place the demolition took on an animal of it's own. I started removing sections and had NO WHERE to put them. I had a large display case in the middle of the layout and one I took apart on the floor. This was a major problem as far as space was concerned. I needed another train room to store my old stuff.

To get started, I felt I needed to remove the items under the layout. I especially needed to remove models from the layout and the rolling stock on the layout and what was stored under the layout. I started by removing and packing the extra stuff and rooling stock under the layout!

I purchased boxes from Public Storage where I have a unit so I can store other family stuff. Yes, I'm paying for a place to keep stuff we are no longer using. Does hoarding come to mind? I'll deal with that later but my RR is a priority.

When I removed the rolling stock, brass locos, some other stuff, etc. I had 42 of the size boxes shown below stacked in storage. 42 boxes of stuff I could open my own hobby store with.

The box is marked small but the actual size is 18" long X 13" wide X 13" high. I filled four of the 24"X24"X24" boxes but they were just to big and heavy when full.

Continued in a few days.

I'll be watching as I plan to tear out mine after the first of the year. Only not as big mine currently is a  4.5 x 9 rectangle and I plan to get a little better use of the 9x9 room I have been allocated

Having the great pleasure/privilege of being in Tom's man cave on occasion I can tell you that this is by no means a small undertaking.  I recently ripped apart my own, very tiny (4' x 6') layout and that kept me busy for the better part of a day.  I can't begin to imagine the effort this is going to take!

I'll be following along!

I though I'd add a few more photos. The good news is that I don't have to post a lot of narrative. Here, a picture is worth a thousand words as they say. I'm not sure who or the "they" are but they are correct!

Tom,

All I can say is OUCH. I know what you are planning and this has to be a painful change. I've been there and still remember taking the layout apart. Not fun my friend. looks like you are being very methodical in taking it apart and saving all the wood, wire, etc. That's even more stuff to contend with. You'll need another storage room for the transition. now i will only have memories and a few photos of your layout. I guess I'll have to come down once you get the new one started!

I've been cleaning up my room in preparation for my inspection from Cruse. looking forward to it. He's going to see my layout and my neighbor's, so he will be taken care of during his visit. I'm sure he'll bring back lots of pictures.

Glad to see your progress. hope to have a couple more ideas to you soon.

Frank,

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at the end of the first build of the A&S!

I started saving the wire but not so much now! Yes, I need another storage area to store what is recoverable. About 95% of the lumber is going to be recycled and if not it will make good fireplace wood!

I appreciate your help and ideas. I didn't get the time to post more photos as I mentioned earlier in the post. Hopefully, I'll get the time this weekend.

Tom,

I received an email with the proposed layout design from Greg. Good start, but you know me, I have some suggestions. I'll be working on them this week and give them to john when he get here next week. I just get the willies when i see a layout being torn down. When i moved many years ago, my neighbor and I took my old layout apart. All i  can say, it was not fun. you just have to keep saying to yourself that the new layout will be better and I am sure that your new layout will be awesome.
Happy Holidays.

Okay, I was trying something but it  didn't work.

When removing this portion of the old layout I forgot I had stuff under the layout and stuff behind stuff that was under the layout. I found an old scented candle, a dead moth, an HO scale broom and a piece of wire insulation.

I also found three railroad signs I forgot I had and I found more old Floquil paints.

Looks like your demo has resulted in Christmas every day. It's amazing what you find under the layout!!! Been under my layout and have found all kind of misc things that I had totally forgotten about. Now I just have to decide what to do with them!!! Having seen your layout, I am in awe that you are making this change. That being said, I think that the new project will be even more awesome. I sure hope that you get a lot of help or consider full retirement, because you are chewing off the butt end of an elephant with this new project. :) :) :)

John,

Thanks for stopping by. I didn't follow this thread as I should have. I'm finished with all the 1:1 modeling for the present so now I can get on with the layout redo!

I have about 150+ more photos of the layout removal to upload and share. More to follow this weekedend.

Well, it's been two+  months since I added anything to the thread.  I haven't been idle on removing the layout but my time was spent remodeling the interior of the house. 1:1 modeling is over for now so here I be, back where I belong.

Let's see, I was at the point of removing the area just north of the large yard. I even found a few treasures mentioned earlier in the thread under the layout. That part of the old benchwork was removed as shown in the first photo below.

I then moved to the large upper yard. First, I had to remove all the cars. Once the cars were removed, I began removing the track work.

Continued in a few minutes.

You can see in the above photo that I still had some revenue items still working the yard as the demolition was moving forward. How do you like my Rube Goldberg wiring? I pormise it didn't look like this when the layout was operational.

Yea, right!

Now a large portion of the large yard is removed, last photo shown below.

Continued in  few.

I really enjoy seeing the teardown of the layout, but at the same time a little sad because I know how much time and effort you have put into the current layout. My first question is where are yu putting all the train stuff, because I know you have a lot of it! Looking forward to the new build. Looking good my friend.

Andy,

Thanks for stopping by. Yes, there is and was a lot of material and supplies to be removed. I find myself moving stuff from one side of the room to the other. I need another room just to store the good stuff I'll be reusing.

It seems I have my very own lumber yard in the train room. I'll post more later this evening.

Good Morning Tom,

I really enjoy seeing the teardown of the layout, but at the same time a little sad because I know how much time and effort you have put into the current layout. My first question is where are yu putting all the train stuff, because I know you have a lot of it! Looking forward to the new build. Looking good my friend.

Frank / Erieman

Frank,

Thanks for stopping by and checking in. This has been a labor of love and hate. I love removing it all for the new one but hate removing it for all the labor I've invested. Alas, poor Tom, I knew him well! Ha, it's time to move forward on a better layout.

Yes, I have a ton of stuff and need to thin out. Maybe one day but the good stuff is just moved from one spot to the other.

I reached the corner of the "L" on the layout room and found two more treasures under the layout. These have been under the layout and in the corner for probably the past 18 years. But first the corner area with the layout bed removed.

When I got the the "L" corner of the layout I found two more treasures. These have been under the layout for the past 18+ years. The first photo is of the corner, well sort of anyway!

[attach=1]

One of the items I found was an old "O" model of the Indiana Harbor Belt 0-8-0. I think it was either Revel, Monogram or AHM I just can't remember.

[attach=2]

The other treasure was given to me by my father in law. It is his old hand made tool chest. It is solid oak.

My father in law was a naval machinist in WWII. When his service was over he got hired with a local machine shop in Baltimore. He was on probation when he and another man built this tool box. Also, he had to buy all his own tools for the shop. He got a good start on the tools and then the Baltimore Police Department hired him as a veteran of WWII.

I'll let the next several pictures speak for them selves. You can see his name, K. Johnson, etched on some of the tools. He passed away about 15 years ago and I miss him as we had much in common. He knew I liked old tools and such so he gave me this box.

I recall those 3-cylinder 0-8-0s; IIRC Rivarossi introduced them in the early 1970s in both O and HO, built in what was then Yugoslavia.  They were of special interest in New England because they could be re-detailed for New Haven.

You commented on an old hammer............. what's to wear out on a hammer ? ! ? ! ? ! ?  But with abuse they can...

But after that you're right...........  I hang on to most any old tool that I have.

Bob,

I have antique saws that still cut a fine line and a few very old planes that work like new.  Ref. the hammer, I have seen wood hammers that split/splinter or crack at the neck. Remember all the old tools hade wood handles, but like you said, if abused they, well the crack and break!

They don't even make wood like they used to either. That should make you laugh as well.

Making wood like they used to....... Absolutely correct.  Force fed trees don't make the same as old growth stuff.

My first job was in a piano restoration house in Chicago in 1962.  I was a sophomore in high school.  Damn I'm old...

The guy who ran the  place had this standard thing that he would tell someone when they complained of this figure of grain or that..........  " I'm really sorry but I didn't stand out in the forest and tell the trees how to grow."

Solved a lot of consumer complaints.......

Now I'm getting into the areas I really hated to remve. I keep my eye on the new prize which will be a new, improved Atalntic and Southern. The photos from here on will be of the areas of the layout I spent the most time on doing. Of course this includes the Mitchrooney Curve, High Trestle, Three Pine Junction, Helper Service Set Out, Highway Overpass, Coaling, Diesel Repair, Turntable and Roundhouse.

But first is the Mitchrooney Curve removal.

Two weeks ago I removed the Three Pine Junction Section including the upper and lower tunnel portals. I scratch built them from sheet styrene. Upon removal I gave them to SBG, Greg DeMayo! Hopefully these will live on! If not, they did serve their purpose for ten years.

Jan,

No need to cry here, I've done enough of it for all of us! I did start another there on the new build but haven't done much on it! I do have some photos I'll get loaded later today or tomorrow. Anyway, here is the link. It's under Layout Tours with the heading of Atlantic and Southern Build.

Jan and others,

I just realized the photos were posted on the other forum so I'll move it all over here and basically start over. It may be a repeat for some and new for others. However; it seems to get me motivated when I read over the other forum.

I'll get it started this evening. Thanks Jan for getting me moving on this.

This afternoon I was under the layout removing a few Tortoise machines and I heard this flapping sound and wondered, "What the He--"! I looked up and out from under the layout and didn't see anything so I went back to the task at hand.

About twenty minutes later I heard this humming/chirping noise. I looked around and this is what I found in my light valance.

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-270314184825.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-270314184825.jpeg)

I tried to guide the Morning Dove, she came in the afternoon, to the door with a broom and she kept banging into the wall so I left her in the valance. After a few hours she flew out.

Someone asked me abut the stained glass that was seen in one of the earlier photos. Here is the story on the stained glass. Back in the early 80's the City of Orlando was in the process of condeming property so the Orlando Magic could build their arena. There was an old Four Square Church to be demo'd and the Orlando Fire Dept. was going to do a training burn on the church. I did a walk through to make sure no "homeless folks" were in the church and I found this window/stained glass in the basement. Obviously I hauled it out. The church was built in 1910. I'm not sure when the stained glass was installed in the church but I'm assuming it was when it was built. All the other windows were removed prior to the burn. Anyway, here is the original 100 year old window as I found it! The window measures 35"W X 45"H.

Thankfully, the demolition is now complete. I'm finally out of my misery and can now focus on the new layout. I'll respond and answer any comments or questions.

Thank you all who followed this thread and for posting your thoughts and comments.

Apologies to Li'l Bobby P. for my comment earlier on your brass body parts, but after looking
at Uncle Tommy's demolition - the winner of the biggest brass ones goes to that Langford boy!
Should know - here's his favorite secondary job:

Congratulations on reaching a milestone on your project. It has been a lot of work and tears taking the layout apart, but now the fun begins. Are you going to share your ideas on the new build? Are you going to make scale models? Inquiring minds want to know.  By the way, It was me that mentioned the stain glass window. Really looking forward to the new build thread. First you have to paint the walls and put down the new carpet? You are like the energizer bunny. Looking forward to the start. If you need to discuss any ideas, you have my number. And we can always SKYPE!!! Enjoy the weekend.

Frank,

I remember now it was you that mentioned the stained glass. I'll be sharing my ideas and yours in a coming thread. Hopefully I'll get something posted this weekend.

I just couldn't leave the walls the way they were from the old layout and the green carpet needed to be replaced as well. Besides a new layout needs, no it begs/screams for a new room to boot!

Speaking of a boot, I need to boot myself in the A-- and get my Skype up and running. I have the camera - it's just taking the time to do it!

Bob,

I'm looking forward to it as well. My Babe asked me again, "You aren't going to be changing this one several times are you"? "Of course not honey, I'm getting the track plan together and it won't change"! Fingers crossed here. Mt Babe just looked at me. I haven't seen that look before.
