Hey Guys:
Here's my next project. The Sierra West Deer Creek Mine.
Karl
You'll have fun with this one!
dave
Hey Dave:
Sounds kie you may have built this one???
Karl
I'll be following along closely. I'm about 3/4 ready to buy this kit to replace the Walthers New River mine that will be a second mine on my layout. At the time it was a toss up between this and the B.T.S mine that I went with.
Great kit Karl, can't wait to see what you do with the scene.....I'll be looking in. :)
No, I haven't built any SW kits. I've been tempted by a couple. But watching other build threads (and seeing the kits at the NNNGC a couple years ago), I'm looking forward to see your process and results.
dave
It would be nice to see someone do the kit other than from pg 1 to the end.
I would leave that up to your imagination Karl.
No doubt you would be the one to do it justice!!
Jerry
I will be following along Karl. I have this kit on the shelf and on my build list.
I'm following along, too. I don't plan on building this one--no mining happening on my pike--but I like watching you work, Karl.
--Opa George
I'm on board for this build, looking forward to seeing how you "weather" it. I have a few Sierra West kits on my list, after I get a few more builds under my belt.
-Steven
I will also be following you on this one Karl, I have this one on my shelf to build yet.
Hey Curt, Greg, Dave, Jerry, John S., George, Steven And Steve:
Glad to have everyone along for the ride. We shall see how it goes.
Karl
Ok Guys:
I started this kit a couple of days ago. So far I have Supports. The small short pieces are the support spacers. Holes are drilled for truss rods. Coloring is as follows. 1/8 X1/8 wood stained with A&I. The two colors of chalk used to color the pieces are Raw Umber & Burnt Umber Chalk. You wash the color into the wood with rubbing alcohol and A soft brush. On to assembly. Here's A photo of the parts. The ore bin casting is also painted.
Karl
Great start Karl.
Hey Curt:
Thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Here's where I am on this kit so far.
Karl
Looking good, Karl.
Cheers, Mark.
Quite an intricate and substantial looking support structure. Lots of interest there. The color of the wood is very rich, Karl. Nice!
--Opa George
Very nice modeling Karl.
Looking good Karl - you are off to a great start.
Off to a great start Karl, these types of builds really interest me. I really enjoy watching these more complicated builds come together, they spark a ton of inspiration.
-Steven
Hey George,Curt,John and Steven:
Hey guys thanks for the great compliments. Just fimnished the ore buin floor. Here's a pic.

Karl
Looks great Karl.
Hey Curt:
Thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Karl,
WOW ... never owned a Sierra West structure kit ... but have seen several of them built up by Mike Engler here in Minnesota.
They are very good looking models. Enjoy your project. Always pick up a few tips on your builds.
Tommy
Karl,
Just getting caught up on the build. Wonderful build my friend.
Tom ;D
Coming on really nicely, Karl.
Cheers, Mark.
Can not beat a Sierra West kit in the hands of a great modeler. If you want the O scale version go to Stoney Creek Designs. Would need to buy it second hand.
Hey Tommy, Tom, Mark and Engine 909:
Thanks for the grat compliments guys. Much appreciated. Got the stair landing added today. Here's A photo.
Karl
Looking real good.
Hey Bob:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl

Karl
Hi guys:
Started working on the walls for the tipple house. Here's A progress photo. Boards are stained with A&I and dry-brushed with pollyscale Zinc Chromate Primer. Here's A pic.
Karl
Very nice Karl.
Karl
Your build is coming along nicely, good to see you back at the workbench. ;)
Karl,
Great job on the build.
Tom ;D
Karl
Looks nice. How did you get the red???
Jerry
Hi guys:
finished the tipple house today. Fair amount of work. All Separate board construction. Hope it looks OK.
Karl
Looks terrific Karl.
Hey Curt:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Guys:
The rafter tails and perlins have been added. Lot of work.
Karl
Looks great, Karl.
They are full rafters, not tails. I would also add rafter tails where the supporting gable walls are positioned, flush with the framing behind the cladding (including the gap in the lower row) and fly rafters attached to the underside of the purlins at their very extremities (not attached to the side of the wall) to support the roof. This is how we always did it in the prototype.
There are various ways of attaching the fly rafters in the prototype, but when the gable soffit is two foot wide or more it is common to have the top plate of the gable wall in line with the bottom of the rafters. Outrigers are then attached to the side of the first rafter in and run at 90-degrees across the gable top plate and protrude by the width of the soffit minus the thickness of the fly rafter which is attached to the ends of the outrigers. Dwangs are then cut and fitted down the rake of the gable wall to stop the outriggers twisting, and rafter tails are attached to the bottom outrigger, with the end of the gable wall top plate supporting them and stopping them droop.
Cheers, Mark.
Looks awesome Karl.
Hey mark:
Thanks for all of that. All the roofs have rafter tails. I'm not A roofer and never ever put one on. so I'm not even sure what you are talking about. Sorry bout that. But thanks thanks for the info.
Karl
Hey Curt:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Got A fair amount of work done today. Got the roofs finished. Used Paper Creek Weathered Corrugated roofing. It's one of my favorites. I really like his products. Also put the rolled roofing on the shed roof. Also added the railing around the stair platform. On to the Chute Extensions. Here's A few pics. Hope she looks ok.
Karl
Looks really good. So you're saying that you added all the rafters just to cover them up?
Looks awesome Karl.
Good progress Karl.....looks great. 8)
Hey Bob Curt & Greg:
Thanks for the great compliments much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
One side of the head frame is assembled. On to side two. Here's A pic.
Karl
Hi All:
Just finished building the minehead frame. Also redid the roof as it didn't match the head frame correctly. There are lots of parts in thss It to me 3 days to completely assemble it. Here's A photo. On to the hoist house.
Karl
Looking great .
Beautiful build Karl.
Beautiful coloring all the way around.
Might be in your top 10 of builds!!
Jerry
Karl, I'm just catching up on your thread, I love the wood framing coloring and I agree that it was a shame to cover up all that beautiful wood framing on the roof with the corrugated roofing. If ever there was a time to show a roof panel job in progress it was with this build. Nice job. Jeff
Hey Jan, Curt, Jerry and Nycjeff:
Hey Guys thanks for all the great compliments. Much appreciated as always.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Just finished the walls for the Hoist House. Here's A pic. Hope they look ok. Boards are stained with A&I. Then I dry-brushed them with Pollyscale Zinc Chromate Primer.

Karl
Like I said this has to be in the top 10 of your builds. The detailing is perfect. Beautiful wood coloring.
Just an all around beauty.
Jerry
Karl,
I love this build. Just one comment, are you going to add a little weathering to the door and windows? I think they should, in some way, blend in better with the exterior walls.
Tom ;D
Hello Karl, I agree with everyone else, this is one of your best builds ever. My only problem is that you keep covering up all the great detail work. Jeff
Hey Jerry, Tom And Jeff:
thanks for the great compliments. Much appreciated. Got the roof finished today. It is removable so you can see the interior detail. Instead of cap shingles I put A Patina copper roof finial on it. Here's A photo.
Karl
Simply gorgeous Karl.
Damn, that's good looking.
Holly Molly. What they said WOW!!!......Dennis
Hey Curt, Bob D. and Dennis:
