Title: Inaugural Expo Kit; Hayden Lithography - 2021 Winter Build Challenge
Post by: NEMMRRC on January 01, 2021, 07:08:19 AM

Howdy!

It's challenge time once more and that means this may be the only thing I almost finish this year lol!

For this the 2021 Challenge I chose a most collectible, rare and hard to find kit; The 2011 Inaugural Expo limited edition kit Hayden Lithography;
named after notorious model railroad author Bob Hayden. I know, I have ruined its value already.

The kit is loosely based on a prototype structure. B.E.S.T. is well know for releasing kits based on actual historic buildings. Thus,
any resemblance to an actual structure is no coincidence. You will note this kit is a coordinated effort by several of the fine
Expo movers and shakers. I sure do miss those Expo shows. Hint, hint.....

Here is what you get inside the kit.

The kit instructions were written by Jill Bollinger. I gather she built the pilot kit as well. There are multiple full color photos in the instructions to guide
the modeler through the build. There is also a very helpful sheet with tips and techniques that apply to any other kit.

Thank you to all those that made the initial Expo and all those to follow such a fun show.

More as it develops.

Looks like a neat kit, Jaime.

I really like that side elevation.

I'll be watching your progress on this one.  I was so pleased to make it to the 2015 Expo.  A real bucket list moment for me.  We don't have anything like that in NZ.

Cheers, Mark.

Who knew those fellows that started the Crafstman Structure Show and later on the Expo would contribute so much to the hobby. I guess this build will teach them to spend so much energy on such endeavors lol  ;D    Seriously, the 2011 Expo was so much fun and I am so glad I got the show kit.

I am not sure I'll be able to find a spot for every one of the castings. There are bunches of them and they are really nice. The structure does have a good mix of rooflines to make a scene interesting.

The gang at B.E.S.T. did a super job of packaging the kit. It was kind of a shame to ruin the shrink-wrap and all. But, you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet.

Howdy!

Time to start gluing some stuff together.

The instructions direct the modeler to apply bracing to the wood walls prior to staining and painting.
I did just that using the 1/8" square strip wood provided in the kit. If one is careful, it is possible to
brace the walls in a manner so the corners can be glued against each other square against the bracing. Furthermore,
this also helps to provide surface area to glue the 1/16" square strip wood used for the corner trim.

I'll let the pictures do the talking.

I measured the required lengths of strip wood and cut them to size.

I line up the 1/16 corner bracing so as to make sure I get the 1/8 bracing in the right spot on the adjoining walls so everything is
tight when it glues up. I use the machinist squares to help keep things perpendicular.

I find it helps to stab the strip wood with a fine point and use that as a handle in order to position the wood
in jus the right spot.

I cheated on this build and glued the bracing with CA glue so I didn't have to wait for stuff to dry. I hate CA glue.
However, I am getting more tolerant of it the more I use it. Go figure ?!

Once I had everything braced I lined up the walls to see how square it all ends up and to make sure my corners would all
go as I planned.

Is a different approach for me to glue the walls of a wood kit together before painting and weathering.  Its how I approach almost every other medium, just not wood.  I'll be watching to see how it goes.

I did not glue the walls together yet though. I only mated them up together to make sure my bracing was in the correct spot. I guess I needed to make that clearer. Although, there are some that glue it all together and then paint and weather. I've only ever done that with plaster castings before

Howdy!

Here is where the challenge begins.

There has to be something challenging about this to qualify, I surmise. The challenging part will likely be
different for each modeler. I have chosen to try new techniques for doing regular normal stuff during this
build. Already I have been using CA glue to brace strip wood to my walls. I'll try to stick to stuff like that.
For example, recently I read of a different way to black out the backs of wood walls.

Why would one want to black out the backs of wood walls?
Well, it helps if you light up the inside of your structure. It keeps the light inside the structure giving it a more realistic look.
Also, it helps to avoid seeing the insides of your building
through open windows. It can be distracting to see an unpainted braced wall inside your model.
In the past I have painted the insides with craft paint or sprayed the insides with a rattle can. This time I am
trying something new to me. I am staining the backs of the wood walls with leather dye. I read about that in the
instructions for a Smokey Creek Desings kit.

I bought some Fiebing's black leather dye and applied it to the back of the wood walls as one would any
other wood stain. Here it goes.

It went fast and easy and a little of the dye goes a long way. I loaded up the dauber once and it ran dry just before doing
the very last wall. That means a bottle of leather dye ought to last me a lifetime.

And now to test how good this works.

The top wall has been treated with the leather dye. The bottom wall was left "virgin" out of the box. I would
say it works fantastic. By the way, the dye did not warp the walls and it did not seep through except at the edges
where I was careless. But, those little seeps add to the character on the front of the wall as you will see later.

Now to stain the front of the walls. Normally I would use the tried and true alcohol and India ink wash. Not this time.
This time I am using the "sweet and sour" stain. I've never tried it before. If you don't know it, it is basically
a solution of white vinegar and rust. You take some white vinegar and you let a wad of steel wool dissolve in the vinegar.
It takes a couple of days to "cook" and it is stinky. I used one pint of white vinegar and one wad of 0000 steel wool.
I then diluted some of it by half and some of that by half again to end up with three strengths of the solution. For this build I went with
the 1/4 dilute solution since I am in uncharted waters. You can always add more. You can't always take it off.

You basically brush the stuff on the wall and wait. Here I go.

I had to shore up the bracing on the walls and weigh them down flat as the sweet and sour stain started to warp the walls. The alcohol stain is practically 9% water and 91% alcohol so any warping is minimal and the walls dry quickly. The sweet and sour
solution is for all practical purposes 91% water and 9% acetic acid. It will warp your walls some kind of awful
and it takes overnight to dry.

Here are the results.

I have mixed feelings about the sweet and sour stain. I really like how it ages the wood. I don't like the warping and I don't like that the stain doesn't penetrate like the alcohol stain. Notice I inadvertently left a small area on the wall uncovered and well, it didn't stain.

I took this time to check that the window and door castings fit in their respective openings after all the staining.

More as it develops.

Jaime,

Interesting to compare the methods. Thanks for the experimentation and results.  I remember the sweet and sour method from way back and used it on some models that I no longer own.  I remember that I liked it; don't remember the warping but that may be due to a foggy memory.  Makes sense though, considering the high water ratio in the mix.

I believe I read that shoe dye (not polish) may also substitute for the India ink in an A&I mixture. Never tried it, though.

Hi, George.

My train buddy that introduced me to craftsman kits way back used black shoe dye and alcohol instead of India ink. I haven't tried that yet. I was warned though to use USMC Black for the shoe dye color. Apparently some black shoe dyes have some blue in them and when diluted in alcohol it makes your models look not so good  ;D

Oddly enough I found out about the sweet and sour stain from a YouTube video on woodworking. The fellow in the video wanted to make his garden shed look aged and run down lol. Truth is stranger than fiction sometimes.

Just be careful each time you open the bottle of 'pickling stain', so you don't get an explosion from the hydrogen....  Keep away from open flames.  Oh, the humanity!  :-)

The idea of staining the back walls is interesting, I wouldn't have believed how well that worked without the evidence.

Mmmmh... I will be sure to extinguish all scented candles in the train room prior to using the sweet and sour stain again.

I was pretty impressed myself wit the blacking effect as well. It almost made me want to light up my structure interior. I'll leave that for the 2022 challenge.

Howdy!

Time to paint some walls.

Again, I will do normal, everyday, mundane hobby things a tad differently on this build. I am not
going to brush the paint on the walls. Instead, I am going to sponge the paint on the walls.

The kit suggests "barn red" for the walls, white trim, and dark green for the large freight doors. I
like that so that is what I will use. The closest I have on hand to barn red is a bottle of Ceramcoat®
Red Iron Oxide. Plus, Ceramcoat® is America's Favorite Acrylic Paint™.

Sponging on paint is a piece of cake. You squirt some paint on a sponge (I used a tile grout sponge),
you squeeze your piece of foam together (a small piece the size of a lime is sufficient) to even out the
paint on the sponge, and then you drag the sponge along the grain of your wall. You want to smear
the paint across the walls. It goes fast and dries quickly.

Now is a good time to add the window castings, door castings and other decorations to the walls. Here
I am adding one of the signs to the walls at this time. I've read and seen all kinds of ways to glue
signs on walls. Let me show you a really easy way. I cannot recall where I came upon this. It doesn't matter.
Pay close attention.

- Make a copy of the sign you are working with
- Weather the sign copy as desired
- Cut the sign copy to the desired dimensions
- Take a glue stick and cover the back of the sign copy completely with glue (this is the trick)
- Glue the sign copy on the wall
- I take the wrong end of my tweezers and press the sign copy snugly against the wall

The glue stick will not curl up the sign nor disturb it any other way. Notice I didn't have to sand the back of the sign
or any other fancy trick. Glue stick is the trick. And, a copy of the original sign. You wouldn't want to muck up
the original sign and not be able to recover.

I use machinist squares and small magnets to help me square up the walls as I glue them to each other.

The kit does not include glazing for the windows. Instead, the kit suggests the modeler use canopy glue to make the glazing. I don't like
using canopy glue for glazing. So, I took some .007 clear styrene I bought at the craft store and cut up a bunch of little panes of "glass" for the windows.

Time to wait for all the walls to dry as they get glued together. This hobby requires the patience of a saint.

More as it develops.

My brain is almost up-to-speed now and I recall I read in a South River kit how to use a glue stick to glue on tar paper roofing. That is where I got the idea to use it for the signs. Be sure to get the non-washable kind of glue stick. There seems to be a trend towards washable/removable glues at the stores lately.

Time to figure out how this beast will fit into a diorama.

What?! Scenery already ?!

I've gotten so I don't work on these things linearly. I get too bored with some stuff so I
need something else to keep me interested. Plus, you have to do something while stuff dries and
sets and such. This hobby requires the patience of a saint.

I found a piece of gator foam laying about that was big enough to make a scene with the building. So,
I took my glued-up walls and plopped them on the gator foam and I teased that around until I found
a configuration I liked.

That looks good enough.

The kit box artwork shows a freight car along one of the docks. Might as well do that for this effort.

That will work. I am off to the races. I need to mark the permanent spot of the building on the
scenery base. I've gotten so I "key" my structures on the base they will go on. I do that by gluing
pieces of strip wood along the inside corners of the structure. This way I can remove the structure
from its base as many times as I need to and still be able to position it on its base in the same spot.
Also, it helps me set a boundary for the actual scenery around the structure. Furthermore, it
gives extra surface area (vertically) when you go to glue the structure permanently on the base.
Here is how I do that.

I noticed the upper section of the building needed some lateral support. So I glued a piece of
strip wood in between the center of the walls. This was not in the instructions/suggestions that came
with the kit. I need all the help I can get to make these things look plausible.

Perhaps it is an optical illusion. Although, the lower roof line on one side of the building is not at the same angle and height as the one on the opposite side. I suppose they did that sort of thing sometimes.

Nice progress Jamie!

To be honest, I don't know if I'll ever get around to building mine.  Not because it's not a cool kit of anything like that.  It's more like I have way too many cool kits stashed away and I don't build them fast enough.  Maybe that'll change when I join the ranks of the retired someday.   ::)

I didn't go to the show this was one was featured at.  If I remember correctly I got it from John (Cuse) who was there.

Looking very good. I bought two of these at the Expo. Like Bob, I realized I wouldn't get around to building one so I sold them both. One to a local member of the forum and the other one on Ebay sold for $200.00.

Great job on yours.

Howdy!

Time to add the roofs.

In the past I have glued my roofs on with wood glue. This time around I grabbed whatever I
had handy. That turned out to be this diminutive bottle of Aleene's Tacky Glue I bought at the
dollar store for exactly $1. Can't go wrong for a $1.

B.E.S.T. includes perhaps the coolest roof cards I have ever seen. They are laser cut to size.
They are firm and sturdy. They are a handsome dark blue so they blend in really nice when added
to the structure. Plus, when added on there is no need to paint the underside as it disappears
because of its dark color. I have visited many layouts of super modelers and I have on occasion
seen an unpainted underside of a roof card that sticks out sorely.

Just like I "key" the building on the scenery base, I also "key" the roof card onto the building. This
lets me work on the roof while removing it from the structure and it goes back in the same spot
every-time. Plus, it adds surface area when you go to glue it permanently.

As my wife would say, "it's starting to look like something."

On to the roofing itself.

B.E.S.T. knocks it out of the park on this one with this way cool laser-cut peel-and-stick tar paper
material. It has a vinyl-like backing and a very fibrous surface. I like it.

I picked up a trick when I built my fitst South River Modelworks kit with respect to tat paper roofing.
If you scrape a razor blade along the length of the tar paper you get a shiny bumpy texture to the material.
I think it adds to provide a weather-worn roofing surface instead of a like-new look.

Here you see how easy it is to roof this building with the material provided in the kit.

And here you see the building all roofed up.

The plaster cast loading dock foundation in the photo above is already glued in place on the scenery base.
I spray painted it grey (with the last drop of Walmart grey spray primer (http://modelersforum.com/index.php?topic=5583.msg152214#msg152214) in my stash) and then I weathered it
with some earth tone acrylics and India ink alcohol stain.

Looks like there will be a lot of rafter tails to do.  If your roofs are removable you can mark the underside intersection of the roof/ wall, measure and cut all the rafter tails on your chopper (or by hand)  And attach them flat on your workbench.  Is so much easier that way.

Cheers, Mark.

There are some 50 or so refer tails. The instructions provide minimal guidance on how to apply them.

Your suggestion is a clever one. I have tired many different things over time to find the "magic bullet" for rafter tail application. So far I am still searching.

There is this cupola that is meant to go on the roof. I wasn't too crazy about its proportions. I built it anyway. I failed at it. So I decided not to add it.

I may change my mind later. After all, it just plops on top of the roof so I can add it at the very end, if I can salvage it that is.

If you have the 'carrier sheets' from the end walls, you can use them to set the roof line slope for adjusting the cupola to sit correctly (plumb) on the roof.

You should have fly rafters at the very extremity of all your roofs (not attached to the side of your cladding), rafter tails where the gable walls supporting your cladding are (the scale thickness of your cladding back from the corner) and evenly spaced between.  3' spacing is common, but 18" often looks better on a model, and is still fine.

Cheers, Mark.

Fly rafters. Yeah. Those crashed and burned on this model  ;D :o

Its peculiar to me how rafter tails are so diminutive in comparison to the entire model yet stick out like a sore thumb when not done properly. Go figure.

I am leaning towards leaving that dormer/cupola off. There's already enough stuff on the roof as it is.

That is a clever suggestion. I have done something similar once before. Alas, this kit had no carrier sheet for the walls. They were in the box free and clear (bag of parts on left side of photo).

Howdy!

Time to add a loading dock.

The instructions guide the modeler on how to assemble the wooden loading dock on the back of the structure.
There is a "notch" formed by the stone foundation side dock where it meets the back of the structure.
I was curious why that was. Perhaps the master for the side dock came out larger than anticipated. Who knows ?!
I went with it.

This is completely a board-by-board construction. To make sure I had the correct height for the
dock I buil the top first and then flipped it upside down to measure the length of the piers holding
it up so it met just at the bottom of the large green freight door in the back of the structure.
This meant the wooden dock would be slightly above the stone foundation side dock. You might
wonder if that would be prototypical. Honestly, without doing some fancy adjustments to the
plaster casting I didn't see any other way to go about it. Plus, that is how B.E.S.T. build it and
that was good enough for me.

So here it goes.

Howdy!

Time to work on the detail castings.

The kit comes with a nice complement of metal castings. You know, barrels, pallets, smokejacks, etc.
I wanted to blacken the castings representing metal items first rather than prime them.
I have some metal blackening fluid I wanted to try out. The castings representing wood items I
primed with a rattle can (Rustoleum camo tan).

So here it goes.

The cast of castings lol

The wood items.

The metal items in the blackening fluid.

I wasn't sure how the blackening fluid would work. I let the items sit for about 5 minutes. This is what I got.

Ugh. All that stuff did was leave behind a slimy film on the castings and on some it actually corroded and pitted them. Notice my "control' casting (small chimney) is still "virgin".

What is odd is the fluid instantly blackened the brass chain length that came in the kit.

Oh well. You have to break a few eggs to make an omelette.

I guess I'll just have to prime the metal items with a black rattle can.

Time to work start building some signs to go on the roof.

There are two large signs that go on top of the roof. The modelers is guided to build these out
of laser-cut scribed wood panels and strip wood. I stained the wood with alcohol and India ink
and painted the frame on the billboard white. I applied the signs to the billboards the same way
I did on the walls, a glue stick.

Wherever possible I like to make jigs when cutting or gluing multiples of simliar pieces. Here you
can see how I made a jig on the cutting template for the billboards' supports.

Once I had the signs glued on the billboards I began to frame the whole thing with the stripwood.

I then glued on the supports.

And when the billboards were all done they went on the roof.

Thank you.

I'm cheating. I began the build on December 16. I had 4.5 days off from work the weeknd of Christmas. I spent a great deal of that time on the build. However, this kit does build easily. I think the trickiest parts so far have been the wood loading dock and the yet to come rafter tails. That tar paper roof B.E.S.T. threw in went on in one evening. All the walls fit perfectly. I can't complain.

Perhaps I'll stop posting updates for a couple of weeks to make it look like it is taking a long time lol  :P

painted a nice green. I spray painted the lamp plastic castings a hunter green to match the wire. After
some fancy tweezer gymnastics and a lot of tongue biting I was able to glue the light bulbs and bent
wire on the lamps and the lamps on the walls.

I then took this really cool casting of a hoist with a pulley and glued it above the second floor loading
door and then glued the chain I blackened earlier to the whole affair.

It's getting very delicate having to handle the whole building as I glue stuff to the walls now. Normally one
would do as much of that while the walls are flat. However, that did not happen that way on this build. Oh well.

Time to put down the track.

For some time now I have been following Joey Ricard with TracksideScenery.com on YouTube. He makes it
look real esy to do a lot of scenery stuff. I followed his methods for weathering track on this build.
You can learn about it by following the link below:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=paint+track+trackside+scenery (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=paint+track+trackside+scenery)

I am cheap when it comes to buying supplies and tools for the hobby. A great deal of the stuff
sold by the major hobby retailers is re-packaged everyday stuff. For example, if you bought the
micro brushes from the big box model railroad supplier you would pay a lot of $$ for the same
stuff you cab buy on Amazon marketed as something else. I bought a mess of micro brushes from Amazon
for only a few dollars. Amazon sells them as "disposable makeup applicator brushes" or something similar.

Anyway, these micro brushes come in handy when weathering track. That box I bought has 400 brushes for $8.

Here it goes.

- Spray paint your track flat black (preferably before you fasten to your diorama/layout)
- Fasten your track. I glued my length of track on the scenery base with UHU glue. It works like a champ.
- Take rust colored weathering chalks and mix that with rubbing alcohol to form a paste
- Paint the rust paste on the rails and tie plates
- Paint the ties a light earth color (I chose Country Tan from the Apple Barrel folks)
- Spread the ballast evenly (dry)
- Fix the ballast permanently using cheap hair spray. Soak it real good. I mean really soak it.
- Once the hair spray is dry take a dark color weathering chalk and blend everything together (I chose black)

Here is a graphic representation of all that.

By the way, that length of track came from an old Bachmann Train Hauler train set from over 25 years ago. Bachmann steel snap track.

Once all that was done I began to add some ground cover to the diorama.

I had a Woodland Scenics fuel oil tank in my stash of junk so I decided to add it to the diorama.

Howdy!

Time to put down some gravel.

I've decided I wanted the surrounding grounds around the main building to be gravel or something
similar to that. I've tried this once before after watching a Joey Ricard video about it. It is
very simple and straightforward. Here is a summary of that:
- Sift Sakrete and collect the fines. This will simulate the gravel.
- Spread the "gravel" in the area of the diorama where it is required.
- Soak the living daylights out of all that with cheap hair spray.
- Wait until it is dry.

So here you see me sifting the Sakrete. I used a tea strainer I found at a yard sale.

This is the result of the sifting; gravel, rocks and boulders from right to left.

I took some dilute white glue and I painted the area where the gravel was to go and then sprinkled the
gravel covering all that and added some more for good measure. The white glue part is optional. I have to
do the dirty work downstairs in the basement so I have to take my diorama from the workbench in my
breakfast room down to the basement. Thus, I wanted to make sure the gravel didn't roll around
during the short trip.

Here is how that turned out.

I bought this nifty doghouse and dog on sale from the largest model railroad supplier back around
Christmas so I decided to use it on the diorama. Here is the kit contents.

Here is is all put together along with another item I bought on sale at the same time.

And here it is on the diorama.

I lack very little left on the main building (rafter tails and roof decorations) before I can
permanently glue it on the diorama base.

Howdy!

Time to wrap it up...

I am getting close to finishing this up.

Here is a view of the jig I made to chop up some rafter tails.

I ended up gluing each rafter tail individually with the whole structure turned up side down.

When gluing the roof decorations I made up some "tar" by mixing up some Aileene's Tacky Glue and
some black Gallery Glass. When it dries it leaves a simulation of tar and it glues the metal casting or
any other decoration to the roof.

Here you can see how I used the "tar" on the billboard supports.

And here you can see how I also used the "tar" on decorations that got glued to the outside of the walls.

I wanted to simulate some spilled oil under the fuel oil tank I added. I used some Mod Podge I
bought at the dollar store for $1. I've heard they changed the Mod Podge formula and that it does
not do as well as it used to. I did not have that experience here.

I wanted to add a utility/telephone pole to the diorama. That Bachmann toy train set that provided me
with the track on the diorama also provided me with said pole. I took some brown thread and soaked it
with dilute white glue to stiffen it and have it serve as the utility lines.

I took some floor shine and used that to give the insulators on the pole a glossy shine.

And here is how I planted the pole in the diorama.

I'm pretty much done with all I need to do except tidy up the diorama and make it photo-ready. At
this point I need to look it over with a critical eye.

More as it develops.

The electric meter box on the wall is a casting that came with the kit. It does look like one of FSM's castings that serves the same purpose.

The only detail castings I used that did not come with the kit were the fuel oil tank from Woodland Scenics, the dog house and dog from Walthers/Faller, the little people from a Walthers set,  and the Bachmann train set utility/telephone pole.

Thank you all that followed along. It's not too late to join in on the build challenge yourself.

A huge thank you to the Expo guys and gals that made it a blast to attend those shows where I have
met some super people in this hobby. I can't wait for the next Expo... hint, hint, hint.

I started on the build on December 16 and the final photos I'm posting here I took on January 10.
I'd say that may be a record for me. The last "finished" kit I built took me some 200 hours over
the course of perhaps 6 to 8 weeks. Its hard to say. I used to record the time I spent on these
things but I stopped when it became a chore to keep up with the build time. I estimate I did 60%
of the work on this one during the 4.5 day break from work I had during Christmas of 2020. Maybe I
should retire as soon as practical so I can have more modeling time.

Anyway, enough rambling. Here are my final photos of the 2021 Winter Build Challenge.

It's been fun putting this one together. I tried some new techniques and refreshed my muscle memory
on others. This is a finished as they get for me. Maybe the next one will get a little more finished
and then the one after a tad more and so on...

Wonder if Best RR Models used a prototype structure for this kit like all of their other releases ?
Think that we will send you a large box of kits to work on since you are much faster at project completion.

That build came out fantastic , like the colors, and your scenery work is well done.
Wonder if Best RR Models used a prototype structure for this kit like all of their other releases ?
Think that we will send you a large box of kits to work on since you are much faster at project completion.
Tommy
Thanks!
B.E.S.T. did base the kit on a prototype.
Now this is turning into a regular job if more kits will keep showing up as I build them  ;D

Beautiful work, my friend.  The outdoor photographs really turned out nice. Are you going to start build two for the challenge this year?

Thank you.
I have started another kit but I don't think it will get added to the challenge. So far it is not proving to be a cooperative kit so who knows what will happen to it.

Over this past weekend a Hayden Lithography kit sold on eBay for $177. Maybe I should have held on to mine lol

Thank you, Doug.

There are more Expo kits made by B.E.S.T. so who knows if I get to build a different one.
