Title: KC's Workshop, Grumpy's Cafe - 2021 Build Challenge.
Post by: ACL1504 on January 01, 2021, 06:19:14 PM
My choice for this year's challenge is a special kit by Kenny Crump of KC's Workshop. My build will be of Grumpy's Cafe.

It is Kenny's rendition of the Riff Raff Cafe on the F&SM. I believe Kenny still offers this kit upon request only. At least it is still on his site but I think they are SOLD OUT.

https://kcworkshop.com/products/by-request-fsm-tribute-grumpys-cafe-ho-scale

This is not a full kit, by design, as the kit comes with no instructions or casting like roof vents, etc. Footprint is approximately 3.5" X 5.5".

The photos of the kit were copied by me off Kenny's website. I added some brightness and contrast to the photos.

Between John Siekirk and me, we have close to 3,500 photos from the F&SM. Oddly enough, I couldn't find any of the Riffraff Cafe in any of the photos. I did find a partial shot but I was taking a photo of another structure.

Again, here is a photo I copied and changed from Kenny's photo sheet. This is the F&SM Riffraff Cafe.

More on this build tomorrow.

Tom, I've been debating to buy this kit for some time.

I'm super keen to see your progress and build of this.

Looks like a neat kit, Tom.

I looked through my photos but couldn't find anything.  I think John has posted all mine, anyway.  The one thing I did notice is just how many bar and grills there are on the F&SM!  People sure like eating out there!

Cheers, Mark.

It's always been so challenging to keep the riff-raff out of this forum and now this ...

LOL  ;D  LOL  ;D

It's odd how I have been to the F&SM several times and made many photos of the layout but I never paid attention to what the structures are called. The only structure I know by name us the Y. B. Fardy (Makers of Gastorex) building Maybe that says more about me than the layout  :)

I'm looking forward to this one. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers, Mark,

I'm looking forward to this one as I have several changes in mind. I see some issues with George's build I want to correct.

I found a partial photo of Riffraff's but not a very good straight on photo.

This structure isn't even listed on John's Index for the F&SM -

Jaime,

Ain't it the truth! George has some very clever names on many of his structures. Not as funny as Howard Zane does, but still clever. One Howard has I can share here is a Doctor's Office of Proctology. Dr. name is I. C. Pyles.

Tommy,

Thanks for following along. FYI, the signs are not scanned to HO scale. If you want me to send a set, send me a PM with your address. I always take the kit signs to a local printer and have them scaled to HO. They do it better than I can.

The ones shown above were just taken with the camera, cropped and posted.

I mentioned I have several changes in mind for this kit. One that some may consider drastic but for me they just make sense.

For the purpose of this post, you can refer to the fuzzy photo below to follow my thinking.

In this photo, it appears the roof is slopped from rear to front. It isn't, it is the angle of the camera shot. The roof is flat. This brings me to another point. This is not a criticism of George's Riffraff Cafe build. It is an honest observation on my part. The rolled roofing on a flat roof doesn't look correct to me. If 90lb. rolled felt paper is used, it would be hot mopped with tar at the seems to prevent water incursion. I pan to have the roof set between the front and two side walls and slopped from front to back. The three walls will also have a wall cap and possible corbels on the front.

Another change will be the addition of an outside stair case to the second floor.

In the next photo you can see it will go on the right side wall.

When I first posted this as my 2021 Challenge, I didn't realize anything was missing. Two weeks ago I got a note from Kenny saying he noticed the concrete base to the structure was missing. He included one in the mail with the note.

Thank you Kenny for the excellent customer service even though I was clueless in Orlando.

Everyone knows I like to change or kit bash structures I build for the Atlantic and Southern RR.

After studying the kit walls, I realized the kit bash would be more involved than I originally thought.

This kit and the RiffRaff Cafe on the F&SM, has a flat roof that overhangs on all four walls. If one wants a flat roof, then tar and gravel is appropriate and not rolled roofing. Yes, rolled roofing can be used but it will leak sooner than later.

Here is Grumpy's showing the flat roofing.

More in a few.

The above photo shows the rear wall of Grumpy's. I believe this will be fine and no modifications will be needed.

However, the two side walls will need to be higher for my kit bash.

In fact, both side wall and the upper front wall will need modifications.

I can cut the three new walls from a larger piece of scribed siding. Shown below -

Or, I can just cut three small wall sections and glue/splice them to the existing wall sections. Decision on this in the next few days.

Looks interesting, Tom.

Splicing weatherboard invisibly is pretty easy - Campbell kits do it all the time.  Just splice at the lap.

I think if rolled roofing is installed correctly you should get a long life out of it without leaking.  I know my old neighbour was one of the architects involved in the design of our town hall and they did a roof check 40 years after installation and found the roof to be still like new.  Here in NZ we call it butynol - I assume that's the same stuff.

However - its always nice to make a change.

Cheers, Mark.

I think you'll find that butynol is a roofing membrane product that is glued to form a complete seal.  In the US, rolled roofing normally refers to just that.  It may be hot tarred or seam heated to get them to adhere to the adjoining piece.  There was a time when it was thought that buildings could be kept cooler in the summer months, if water could be ponded on the roof and let evaporate.  But it required a impermeable roof covering system to do so.  Hence membranes.   The down side is that some systems could be peeled off during extremely high winds.

Mark,

We have plenty of flat roof structures here in Florida. All the flat roofs I've been on have been gravel over tar. Maybe it's just me but a flat rolled roofing doesn't look right. Cheers.

Bob,

During my LEO days, I've been on my share of roofs. Some had standing water that wasn't draining.  Usually these roofs had small bushes or even the start of small trees growing out of the water with the roots reaching through the gravel, tar and down into the sub roof. Standing water on a roof in the South is a NO-NO!

Appreciate the info.

I came up with another option for the upper wall additions. I decided to use a piece of strip wood 1/16 " X 1". It was cut to fit and edge glued to the top of the two side and rear walls.

I used a metal square to ensure my cut was flush to the wall edge.

I'm not concerned about any gap between the top of the wall and the strip wood. It will be covered with a trim board which I'll cover later in the build.

More in a few.

I also plan to have an out side stair case leading to the second floor.

I positioned the door where I wanted it. I then turned the wall over and positioned it as shown below. This was so I could cut the door opening from the rear.

In one of my other build threads I mentioned I have several door and window plugs I've either cut or saved from other kits.

I marked the location of the door and placed the plug over my mark. I used the metal square again to ensure the plug was aligned properly.

I then traced the door plug. The extended lines are to let me know where to start and finish the cut. When I use a ruler to cut on line, I can't tell where the other lines are. So, the extended lines give the the correct reference.

The opening was cut. I used an Emory board to clean up the corners. The door on the second floor now has an opening.

Not shown here but I then added nail holes as Reaading Bob said, "Cuz I like them."  I don't add nail holes to all my kit bashes or scratch builds but I do like the look when weathered.

I used a large sanding board to clean up the kerfs on the wall edges. The laser cuts at a very slight angle and I sand the wall edges smooth to ensure a clean and tight fit on the corner trim.

Done for now.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I wanted this roof to slope from front to rear. I made a pencil mark two HO scale inches from the top of the front of the side walls. I drew a line from there to the rear.

I then added the interior wall bracing and cut them at the angle of the pencil line.

Horizontal bracing was then added as shown below.

Since the roof card for the un-kit bashed kit was larger than the exterior dimensions of the four walls, I measured and cut a small piece off the side.

Bernd,

Thank you, much appreciate the compliment. Glad you are getting a few ideas from my threads.

Now, for the BIG question. Yes, and here's why. I'll try not to write a screed here.

On the old forum, we could post up to 6 photos, same as here. For me posting two photos per post is due mainly to habit. When posting 6 photos, there were a few times I hit the wrong key and lost all the post requiring me to start the post over. Thus, I started keeping my thread information short, to the point and posting only two photos.

Also, you'll notice, as mentioned above, my threads are short and to the point I'm trying to show or make.

I find myself loosing interest in a thread when I have to read long paragraphs to see what the modeler is wanting to say about his build.

I want my followers to get a few new ideas from my posts and not get frustrated by me pontificating.

John Siekirk (S&S RR), likes to post larger photos. When he posted using the larger photo format, it took a long time to load on the thread. So, he started to post one larger photo per post.

I guess it comes down to personal preference and in my case it is just easier to move through my thread.

Hope this answers the question.

Thanks Tom for the explanation. I have a tendency to post more pictures with less words.
I feel pretty comfortable with the forums format. It's as good if not better than the other one.
As far as pictures go I'm sure you may have noticed I host my own pictures on my website. Much easier than up loading to the forum and using up valuable disk space. I find a 1024 pixel width picture works fine. If I want to do a bigger picture so you can see the details better I use my website to post a larger picture in another tab. I've also learned to use a word processor to write my post. I've lost to many posts the other way.

Okay, I'm a little behind on this one so I'll get caught up tonight.

The building front has seven pillars.

I used a #17 Xacto to remove them from the carrier piece. The small tabs are delicate so take your time. I failed to do so and broke a couple.

From the photo below, looks like I broke four. The small white spots are missing a broken piece. These won't show after painting and will explain later.

I studied the door and door opening and determined that you can cut off the sides of the top piece to make it fit flush. You can also make this a screen door.

If desired, you can remove the side where you see the small laser burn cut at the top of the door. I did experiment and it really doesn't look bad fit flush with the wall section.  Shown below.

NOTE: If you use a screen door, be very careful when removing the sides. I pulled the door apart at the door knob and will need to glue it back in place.

The small window piece fits here, at the top. Yes, it is crooked but not yet glued.

I glued the seven pillars to the front top wall piece and let dry over night. I used some long weights to hold them until the glue dried.

Here is a view of the top piece with pillars and the bottom piece.

NOTE: The seven pillars are glued at the bottom of the front wall and flush with the bottom.

Not sure if you mentioned it earlier, but this kit lacks instructions.  It is a "bare bones" offering from Ken and he is very clear about the lack of an instruction sheet.  Why do I make a point of this?  Easy, your clear explanation and photos will make assembling this kit a breeze for me.  I won't have to sit and compare the pieces and try to figure out where they belong.  Thanks for paving the way so to speak, and making my build so much faster and easier.   ;D ;D ;D

A thought about finishing this:  The posts, in particular, on a Victorian building like this were built up from pieces of cast ironwork.  You could take advantage of that, using a semi-gloss paint or even adding metal or rust if you're after a 'well used' look.  A semi-gloss paint on the posts would contrast nicely with flat paint on the wood parts.

Dave,

What a great photo. I've saved it to my misc. building photos file.  "Confessoes" is Portuguese, femine noun for confections. English translation is clothing. I wonder if it was a pastry/candy shop or ready to wear clothing store.

Yes, you have a point. However, this looks like some very fancy woodwork to me. You can see the rot at the bottom. My pillars are very plain on this kit and will be weathered accordingly.

By the way, the color of the front in your photo is very similar to what I've chosen.

Thanks for the info.

Work on the front of Grumpy's continues.

In the photo below the front bottom and front top are temporarily aligned. It appears the two wall sections are flush.

However, when I push down on the top of the lower wall, you can see it isn't flush at all.

These two sections of the front wall need to be flush. Bracing from the rear won't solve this problem.

More in a few.

Post by: ACL1504 on February 17, 2021, 07:37:37 PM
Here is how I solved the problem.

I measured the difference in height and it is 1/32 inch. I went to the scrap strip wood stash and  found a piece that was 1/32" thick. I then cut it to length. I then measured the height required which was 1/4 inch. I shaved a little off the top to get it 1/4".

When this strip was added to the top of the pillars, the two wall sections were then flush.

The Grumpy's Cafe signage goes here so it needs to be flush. There you have it. Besides, it looks more architecturally correct.

Back in a few, Diet Pepsi time.

This morning I stained the walls with a light application of Hunterline Light Gray A&I.

I have a little story to tell here. I'll try not to make it a screed.

A few years ago I purchased from Sam Flax three glass jars. I use these to hold the Hunterline A&I stains.

Two weeks ago I went to Flax to purchase more glass jars. They no longer carry the glass but have plenty of thin plastic jars.

I asked for help and the girl said they never carried glass jars. I asked to speak to the manager or the person in purchasing. Not sure which one showed up but she also said Sam Flax never carried glass jars. I said thank you for your help and left.

Yepper, I went straight home and got me little glass jar with the Flax price sticker still on the GLASS JAR.

With the evidence in hand, I returned and asked to speak to the person who told me they never carried glass jars.

I proudly lifted the glass jar so she could see the Flax sticker. Her, comment was, "Oh!"

All of a sudden they remembered possibility carrying the glass jars. I said, "There is no possibility, here is the evidence in real life."

And she remembered then where she got them. They were ordered from Uline.

I like these little 4oz jars as they don't leak and you can dip windows, doors and other smaller parts in the A&I. Much easier than trying to fit on in the top of the Hunterline bottle.  The jars come with a metal or plastic cap. I got the plastic as it has a seal on cap to prevent leaks.

I paid $1.99 for one jar. I ordered more form Uline for .75 cents each. The only problem is that I had to order 24 glass jars.

Looks like I'll be giving a few away.

Your build is coming along great.  The glass jars look very useful.  I'm currently using baby food jars (from the Grandkids) but the lids don't fit as tight as I would like.

John,

Thank you for the kind support.  These glass jars are perfect and seal tight. Baby jars don't hold the seal after they are opened.

Wow, hard to believe two weeks have passed since my last post. Been busy on lots of stuff.

I decided on the two colors for Grumpy's . I'm going with Floquil GN Gray Green for the front and G. W. Cream for the main walls.

Back in a few, Diet Pepsi is needed.  ???

That's similar to my railroad's standard color combination (German Army Field Grey, Yellow Oxide), so "good choice!"   ;D

I sprayed the front back wall with the G.W. Cream and let dry.

I then sprayed the GN Gray Green on the front portion with the pillars. It was set aside to cure and dry.

Prior to the walls being glued together, I'll need to paint the front of the corner trim the GN Grey Green. On both sides of the front wall that is.

I waited to add the store front header after the corner trim was added. This needs to be flush with the outside of the side walls.

I put the three front doors together and sanded the sides as shown below. After painting, the thickness of the paint and the swelling of the parts  made them wider than the opening.

I used a heavy duty sanding board to sand the edges.

If your sanding is true the doors should stand on edge.  :P

I know I said to sand the edges due to the paint but you need to very lightly touch up the edges now. If not, the beige color will show on the sides of the doors when installed.

Now for the fun part.

I had a friend, now deceased, who was a photographer/lighting expert for Disney World. His name was Ross Goodenough. Yes, that was his real name! He was the main man who made the decision how to light a Disney scene.

His gave me a color wheel of colors. There are over 137 colors in this pad. The colors represented all had a filter of that color that fit over the lights in the displays.

I'm going to fast forward here a bit and just say the colored Mylar/Actetate samples make great stained glass.

Many stores had stained transom windows above the entry doors. At least they did as I remember growing up in the South. Grumpy's is no different.

I cut the colored acetate to fit the small (very small) transom windows.

The red and blue will be on the barber shop.

I painted the four walls with Floquil G.W. Cream. I thinned the paint with thinner to a 70% thinner and 30% cream. Basically this went on as a wash. While the paint was still wet on the walls, I then pressed them down onto a clean white paper towel. This gave me the look in the two photos below.

This is the first step in weathering the walls.

It appears the wall in the first photo is a darker cream than the wall in the second photo. The angle of the photo and light on the wall looks different. The walls are in fact the same color.

Also, I was going to paint the windows to match the store front but nixed that idea. I thought it would not be a good fit for the eye. I'll either go with weathered Cream or White weathered to match the walls. After all, the windows weather at the same rate as the walls.

The Babe recently gave me this sign for the train shed. Either I'm to slow or she couldn't find a Grumpy Old Man sign.

Detailing and weathering the walls was something I've been putting off.  Many years ago I started to remove some boards from walls and replacing the boards with new 1X4s.  This time I tried something different.

I used a new #11 blade and removed a short section of siding. I then turned it over and glued it back into the wall as shown in the two photos below.

In the center of the rear wall there is a small alcove with three walls. For those of you reading this thread and have the kit, you may want to pay attention to this next little bit of information.

I always test fit stuff like wall additions and sub walls. I fit the three alcove walls together and placed them on the center of the rear wall where they go.

NOTE: Don't glue the three wall pieces together, not yet anyway.

When I test fit the three alcove walls together and placed them on the opening, the sub assembly didn't fit. If you glue them together then they never will fit properly.

I got them to fit by not tightly pressing them together as shown below. These walls are a tight fit so you can make the adjustment as the flue dries. So again, be sure they fit prior to gluing the together or in place.

You can see in the  following photo that the two side walls are not pressed up against the back wall.

More in a few.

Title: Re: KC's Workshop, Grumpy's Cafe - 2021 Build Challenge.
Post by: ACL1504 on March 09, 2021, 06:27:43 PM

Also included in the kit are three peel and stick pieces the go on the three alcove walls. I'm not using them on my build but in the next photo you can see I have them painted the front wall color. I could have painted them the cream color but then it would make for a bigger problem in the alcove walls not fitting properly.

Kenny includes in the kit a base for the structure. I don't plan on using it so the rear alcove needs a slab of concrete.

I took a scrap piece of strip wood, turn it over and made a test fit.

In the next photo you can see I cut it to fit the opening. I cut it large enough so the entire alcove wall sub assembly fits on the slab.

Prior to gluing it in place, I used a flat sanding stick and beveled the front edge and then painted it with Floquil Concrete. When dry it was glued in place.

I was  going to leave the rear wall as it is in the above photo. However, I decided to stain and paint some scrap 4X4 wood and cut it to fit the door opening as shown below.

The four walls were weathered to the point I felt comfortable enough in gluing the two front walls together.

First, I stained some scale 2X8s and painted them the wall color. This was added as a trim piece at the top of the front and two side walls.

If you decided to do this on your model, be sure you leave plenty of trim on the sides of the front wall. This will fit over the trim boards on each side wall. After the walls are glued then the trim can be trimmed.

Referring back to the photo below, you can see how I extended the wall bracing down past the upper wall. This is to give me a little gluing area for the lower front wall section. Also, I only extended them long enough so they didn't show in the windows of the lower front wall.

I applied glue to these extended braces and then married the two front walls.

Here is how it looks with the extended bracing from the upper wall section.

I then added extra bracing to the lower wall and extended it to just below the windows on the upper front wall section. This bracing method is required if you want a strong front wall. Due the the placement of the large store windows, this was the only way to add the bracing.

I'll spare everyone the boring facts of making the deck for the second story. This will be added to the upper door I added on the right side wall.

I chanced making the platform by using the lines on my cutting mat. To my surprise I got it square and it is probably level as well.  :P

You can see I also had a boo boo and cut one of the deck/platform pieces to short. I used one of the braces to make the easy repair. This error won't be seen by any visitors once on the layout.

I randomly added some Hunterline Medium Brown A&I stain to the top of the deck. Once dry, I used the rough side of an Emory board and lightened the deck stain to represent a more weathered/worn look.

I then used an Xacto #11 blade and cut a few boards, nailed holes were then punched into either side of the cuts.

After adding the nail holes, I used a OOO Floquil paint brush to add stain to the nail holes.

Done for this fine night.

I didn't get much done on Grumpy's today. I plan to build an open air roof over the second story deck. In the next photo you can see I glued a scale 2X8 above the door. This will be where the 2X8 rafters will be attached to the wall.

I then glued a 2X8 below the door where the wall portion of the deck will be attached. I also glued two vertical 4X4's on the right.

A structure as this would look great with interiors and lights. However, the planned location and more structure details are a cause for concern. Concern in that it will probably not be lighted or have interiors. I'll explain as I finish the build.

In an attempt to decide on lighting and interior I glued the front and right side walls together.

I made doubly sure it was square as the glue dried.

I left the walls clamped over night.

I found some barber stuff and tried to see if it would work on the right store front. Looks okay her, however, all is not what it appears.

This photo was taken on the work bench.

The planned location of Grumpy's is on the east side of the Tahope Main Street and across from another structure as shown below. In the photo below, Grumpy's is set off the road on the right as the stairs and second floor deck are yet to be attached.

This is a good view but again, not what it appears to be.

Two issues come into play here.

!.  Grumpy's center store front will have an awning, partially blocking the view of the store on the right, the barber shop.

2.  When the upper level is added, it will be more difficult to see the complete store front from anywhere close to street level.

I'm pretty sure this just answered the question to light and have interior or not. So, no lighting or interior. Instead, I'll concentrate on the exterior details.

For the angle issue, would turning the chair 180 degrees let us see more? Barbers always turn me from the mirror to do their magic.

I wanted to add a little more detail to the deck so I turned my attention to the deck posts. These are usually 4X4 posts and I didn't want to just glue them flush to the top of the deck.

I decided to use HO scale 2X4s and glue them together.  I cut three 8.5 HO scale inches long and three 7.5 inches long.

I then glued the two together as shown below. The 1 inch difference is the height of the deck plus the top boards.

More in a few.

I made two more for the side posts at the height of the railings at 4 HO scale feet and three feet. These were also glued together. I cut one 4X4 to a length of 4 ft.

When dry, I glued all of them to the deck. I used a square and weight to keep them vertical as the glue dried.

One was just slightly off so I left it as the building is old and the deck post has shifted just a bit.

Again, when all were dry, I glued a 2X8 header to the top of the three posts.

The header is level but my small level wouldn't stay on top so I held it.

The 2X4 that runs down the edge of the deck needed to be secured other than just the glue.  ???

So I went to my nut and bolt stash and found some the size I needed.

I painted the five N&B castings with Floquil Rust and let dry over night.

I used a #64 bit in the pin vise and drilled holes in the three long and two short posts.

I then glued the N&B casting in the five holes.

This is a far as I'll go with the deck until I get it glued to the building.

As I move from detail to detail, I'll touch the ends of the exposed strip wood to match the correct color.

Yes, the structure is square.

That's all for now folks.

I'm happy to be back on this one. I've been a little grumpy not getting back to my name sake.  :-X

Today, it took a few minutes to locate my parts for finishing Brumpy's Cafe.

I installed corbels along the top portion.

I installed them on all sides except the rear.

I then added wall caps to the three walls with crobels.

If you ever do this, be sure to leave some for the overhang on the structure.

I had a little glue squeeze and used a tooth pick to clean the offending glob.

Once all three wall caps were glued in place and dry, I trimmed them and touched up the exposed ends.

I placed four weights on the bottom to ensure the top caps were flat and flush with the building.

More in a few. I already have the Diet Pepsi.

One roof detail I'm adding is the Inter-Action roof top A/C unit.

This is great little detail to add to your model where visitors can view the roof.

I added one to the Stella Scale Models, New Erie Cafe.

More in a few.

I used a single edge razor blade and cut the A/C pieces from the carrier sheet.

I then used an Emory board and carefully removed the small kerf tap where the sections were attached to the carrier.

I then glued the pieces together using Elmer's wood glue. When the glue on the main unit was dry I glued on the bottom piece. This piece fits nicely between the four sides. That is provided you get the unit square.

The top of the A/C unit has three pieces. There is a bottom piece, which has the fans laser cut on the board, a middle piece and the top piece.

I glued the small fan piece to the bottom side of the middle piece. This section/piece has two holes on one end. Make sure the fans are centered under the  middle and under the two holes.

The top piece has two holes and two thin bars across the holes.

The next photo shows the three pieces glued together.

The top piece is slightly larger than the middle one. If you center the middle piece under the top piece, the pieces will look as they do in the next photo.

Notice the difference in the pieces?

The completed top section fits snuggly between the four walls of the main unit.

I used Model master Green Zinc Chromate to paint the unit.

I'll add weathering when the paint has cured.

I tried several times to talk myself out of lighting and installing an interior. I failed on that attempt.  :-X

Old buildings that had multiple stores on the bottom had wood floors. So, I'll add a wood floor to the three stores.

I cut a piece of Northeastern Scale Lumber 1/16" X1/32" scribed siding for the floor.

I added a little more to the exterior stair case and glued it in place.

I used a small metal square to keep it level and in place as the glue dried.

It is level of course!

I added two strips of 2X4s to the back of the stair stringers. Instead of cutting my own stringers as I usually do, I used Northeastern Scale Lumber stringers to save time.

More in a few.

I previously had the measurement for the width of the stringers. I used three HO scale 2X8s and glued the stringers flush to the outside edges of the three 2X8 spacers.

When the stringer sub assembly was dry, I glued it in place against the platform and wall as shown.

Continued, Diet Pepsi time. Back in a few.

Once the stringer sub assembly was in place and the glue dry, I added the HO scale 2X6s for the treads.

When this entire sub assembly is dry you may choose to remove the three spacers. In my case, I chose to leave them in place for a little extra support. I did  use Hunterline Light Gray A&I to stain the ends of the treads.

Done for today.

Here's an underside look at the porch assembly.

I finished all the support braces and railing on the porch and stairs.
I next added some very old Rock Quarry tar paper roofing.

More in a few.

The roof decking is a thick piece of cardboard. I trimmed it to fit the new angled roof. With the Florida humidity, I noticed it would sometimes not lay flat on the wall supports.

I turned the structure upside down and marked in red pencil the outline of the roof supports.

I used scale 10X10's and glued these in place.

Since the Elmer's Carpenter's glue is water based, I left the weights on the added bracing for two days.

More in a few.

The extra bracing helped with the vertical warping, it then warped horizontally. I added the horizontal bracing for an easy fix.

I used 1" wide 3M Transfer tape to secure the roof papers.

More after a fresh Diet Pepsi is grabbed.

I turned the roof over and trimmed the transfer tape using a sharp #11 blade.

I sprayed a sheet of typing paper with Ace Hardware Premium Gray primer. fast forward here and the papers were cut and taped in place.

I left a little paper overhang on the deck and added a small line of glue to the roof supports. The roof was then pressed in place and weighed until dry, no photo here.

Reading Bob gave me a bottle of Gallery Glass Liquid Leading.

It was a little to thick from drying so I added a couple of squirts of warm water and gave it a vigorous shaking. I squeezed some out on my glue pad and using a small brush painted it around the edges of the roof.

When dry, I used a fine medium tip Flair paper Mate pen to add some tar to the seams.

I still need to add weathering to the roof top and side roof. A few more details need to be added to the main structure also.

I've placed an Inter-Action Hobbies roof top A/C unit on one side of the roof. I've order a couple more and will add one the the other side.

Thankfully, this 2021 build challenge will be coming to completion very soon.

I weathered the roof and roof top A/C unit. The A/C unit was weathered with Floquil Roof Brown using a thin brown wash. When dry, dusted with pastels.

The roof was weathered with Pan Pastels - Gray, Dark Dray blended with Raw Umber Tint and Titanium White.

The middle and left stores are yet to be named and filled.

The Coca Cola sign could have just as easily been placed on the upper portion of the wall. However, the building going next to it would block the view. I'll make a small alley way so the sign being on the bottom makes more sense.

For now, I'm calling this one 98% finished. I still need to add a second A/C unit to the right side of the roof. Some vent pipes and possibly two chimneys. Not sure about the chimney type yet.

This was an easy kit and very well done by KC's Workshop. I made it much more difficult in terms of time by adding extra detail and changing the over all look of the structure. I seem cursed with the need to change a kit to fit my mind's eye.

At the last minute I added three interiors starting with the Barber shop. The other two are yet to be decided.

I drastically changed the entire look of the structure by drastically changing the roof - from flat to pitched. I raised the wall sides by four feet allow for the pitch of the roof and to add the corbels.

The outside stairs and upper porch area required as much time as did the main structure. This added feature changed the over all look as well. Yet, it was fun to build.

The three interiors will be lit at a later date but I'm in the mood to move on to another build.

I appreciate all whom left comments and followed along on this "never ending" build.

Looks great, Tom.

I think the outside porch and stairway add a great deal to this structure.  The sloping roof, too, is a nice change.  Maybe next time you can try adding a hip roof behind the parapet walls.  Those are quite common, even though from the street they all look like flat roofs.  They also add a great deal of personality and individuality to a structure.

Cheers, Mark.
