« on: July 21, 2020, 06:12:20 PM »
As I'm working of the Big Tahope River area, I'm also going to build a River master Office. I'm using the KOM #18- June 2020.

It will be placed here with only river access to the structure. No stairs from above. You arrive by boat and you leave by boat!

I'm off on yet another brass loco painting. I'm coming much further south for this one. This is a brass PFM Southern Railroad class Ms-4 mikado.

I'll have more information on this loco in the coming days.

Rolling Stock / C&O K3, 2-8-2 Mikado Painting
« on: May 29, 2020, 06:03:17 PM »
This is the next brass loco in the paint shop. This is a brass PFM C&O K3 2-8-2. In fact, I'm behind in the thread as this one is already painted but needs details and decals added.

This model came in two versions. Both a rectangular tender and a Vanderbuilt tender model was offered in 1978 at a retail cost of $495.00. The Vanderbuilt version cost $550.00.  Also, they both had the Elesco K-40 feedwater heater on top of the smoke box. 730 of both versions were made and imported.

Here is a photo of the Vanderbuilt tender version. The locos were identical with the exception of the tenders. At various times, these have sold on the secondary market for upwards of $1200.00 to $1800.00. Prices are low so now you can probably get one, if available, for around $650.00.

More in a few.

Rolling Stock / Louisiana & Arkansas Railway Ten Wheeler Painting
« on: May 22, 2020, 04:03:52 PM »
My A&S paint shop has a small ten wheeler up next for painting. This is a United/PFM brass loco 4-6-0  known as a ten wheeler. 750 of this model was made by Sam Hongsa in 1976 and sold new for $160.00. While visiting Cliff Powers the Babe bought this from Cliff for $100.00.

The L&A referred to this little loco as the "Hustler". It ran as an overnight train from New Orleans and Shreveport, LA.

The A&S RR will renumber and letter this one for the Atlantic Coast Line.

This photo was taken from the 1977 PFM 14th Edition Cartalog. I already have it in pieces, cleaned and ready to paint.

Morning all,

Another Saturday in my Coronacation. What fun it is to stay home.

Last week Pam and I met friends and had a side walk picnic. We were social distancing but had our little tables set up in front of a closed business. Guess what, some busy body called the PO PO on us.

They said a complaint was called in that we were gathering and not practicing safe social distancing. I spoke to the police and showed them my retirement police ID. They told us to have a great day and to stay safe.

Some people just have to complain about anything cause they have nothing else to do but get in someone else's business.

Stay safe my friends and have a great day.

Rolling Stock / C&O H-5 2-6-6-2 Articulated Painting
« on: April 21, 2020, 05:37:43 PM »
The Judge, AKA: the A&S RR Ticket Agent, made a request to the A&S Paint Shop to paint the Chesapeake & Ohio H-5 articulated 2-6-6-2 loco. This H-5 is the USRA version.

This loco is a Key import made by Samhongsa. This particular model was released in 1981 at a retail cost of $557.00 On the current secondary brass market they can sell anywhere from $500.00 to 850.00. Only 75 of this model were made and imported. Key also imported 35 H-4 and 130 H-6 versions.

For this thread, my plan is to show the before and after photos and address any issues that come up. I see a couple issues already which I'll get to when the time is right.

We installed TCS DCC WOW sound and it will have to be removed.

Rolling Stock / B&O RR 2-8-0 painting - B&O Guy will like this one.
« on: March 29, 2020, 05:55:02 PM »
Off on my second brass painting adventure. This one is an B&O RR. E-27 class consolidation. This model was made by Atlas and imported by PFM in 1975. PFM imported a total of 2601 of these between 1967 and 1975. The 1967 model sold new for $55.00 and the 1975 model sold for $180.00. This model, the 1975 version has plastic brake shoes.

Our resident B&O Guy, Chip Stevens, will probably watch this one.

I have already taken it apart and forgot to take a loco photo. Here is the 1969 version from the 13th Edition of the PFM catalog.

Two years ago I installed DCC WOW sound and have removed the decoder. Many years ago I also installed a new 20 X 32mm Sagami can motor. I've never had a problem with the PFM gear boxes so I left this one as is.

More in a few.

Baggage Car - Daily Chat / SBG, Jim Miller passed to a better place.
« on: March 27, 2020, 05:11:29 PM »
Our good friend and Charter Member of the Saturday Butty Group, Jim Miller (jimmillho) died last night at 9:40 PM at Orlando Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his wife Claire and two sons Steve and Danny.

Jim loved model railroading and thoroughly enjoyed this forum. Jim joined the forum on December 10, 2015 and his last post was March 13, 2020.

Jim recently had open heart surgery and on Tuesday had a pacemaker installed. However, he still suffered with congestive heart failure. Wednesday he was told he was also in kidney failure. Jim is now in a better place and is no longer suffering the pangs of old age.

I spoke to Jim on Wednesday evening and although he was very weak, he was aware of his situation.

My sincere thoughts and prayers for Claire and the boys.

Rest in peace my friend.

Rolling Stock / Pennsylvania K4 Repaint
« on: March 17, 2020, 05:57:33 PM »
I have 7 or 8 brass locos left to paint. When I finish these I'm done. My plan is to do 1 every two weeks if possible. After all, I have no other projects in the works. Hope my nose isn't getting longer.

The Duluth, Missabe & Northern 2-10-2 is out for some back shop repairs so I'll start with the Pennsy K4.

Note: This is not one I painted but rather one painted by one of my old competitors.

This is a brass K4 built by Atlas and imported by PFM, Pacific Fast Mail. This is the 1975 version and sold for around $180.00 back then. More on the loco details later as well.

There is a lot of history on this model and I'll get into that later. For now here are some photos of how it looks at present.
