Morning all,

Everyone must have slept late like I did.  Nearly finished with downstairs cleaning.  Need to run the track cleaning train today.

Quiet here on a Sunday morning.  Wife got back from her trip yesterday, the dog is quite happy.  A trip to the grocery store is on tap for today.

Morning, all.

The Judge has already made his Saturday report, where are the rest of you all?   :) Continue taking out ceiling panels today.  They're like a puzzle box, you have to move out one to take out another, etc.  The wiring goes over the west end yard, so all the trains need to be moved.  It's going to be over 70 today, so maybe some outside work as well.

Kit Building / Barlow's Bar B Que build
« on: March 27, 2021, 06:00:43 PM »
I'd mentioned to Karl at the end of the Bernard's Tractor build that I considered this kit for the same spot on the layout.  I think it will be a little to big for the spot, but let's build it anyway and see.  I probably won't be able to finish this by April 15, so won't include it in the challenge.  Here's the kit. I wonder if he's using the bags as they are cheaper, or maybe it's an issue of not feeling constrained by the box dimensions for packing. Anyway, time to open it up.

Vehicle Modeling / 2021 Build challenge, Act V
« on: March 27, 2021, 05:43:12 PM »
With a short time remaining in the challenge, I thought I'd add one more Act to the play.   ;D  I have several of these Alloy Forms vehicles, including three of these pickup trucks.  I like them because you can pose the tailgate in an open position.  The detail is pretty good as well.  As they are too new for my era (they are year 1956), I will pose them with the front end away from the viewer's perspective in case someone who really knows their old trucks tries to call me on it.   :D  I also have an old Dyna Models truck I probably bought at a hobby show 20 years ago.  The detail is not up to the Alloy Forms standard, which I think is a bit below the  Sylvan models.  Anyway, here they are.  I've both of these a long time, look at the price on that Alloy Forms.  :o

Rolling Stock / Build Challenge 2021, Act IV
« on: March 24, 2021, 08:14:55 PM »
I wanted to do another build for the challenge, but a quick one as we're running out of time.  I like to build these Proto 2000 kits.  They are a challenge to see if I can still do them physically.  As some of us get older, vision and coordination tend to worsen.   I've also picked up a mild intention tremor, only in the left hand for now.  So I usually like to do one of these kits yearly to see how I'm stacking up.  Really scientific!  Car body, grab irons, teeny plastic parts, and instructions.  Note on the package it says it builds in an hour.  It took me four days.   :o  But there is a reason for that, as you'll see.

Morning, all.

Get up all you sleepy heads.  I've got three days off and can't wait to get started.  Here's a Shorpy pic that shows some lines on the siding.  Made by nails, perhaps?  ;D

Everyone must have slept late with the time change.  Trip to the grocery store later is the only thing on tap for today.

Kit Building / 2021 Build challenge. Act III
« on: January 28, 2021, 02:29:47 PM »
I was undecided what to do next after the two small projects.  I have a brass caboose I'd like to paint, something I've never tried before, but I needed to order some paint/decals for it and who knows when they'll get here, so that was out.  I thought a resin boxcar kit would be doable, as it would be the same color as the caboose, but after looking at the parts and instructions, it went back in the box for now.  My present layout "plan" is to finish the scenery in the rocks area (on the right in the first photo), and extend that to the left.  I'd also like to go from the "west" end of the layout (staging yard in the photos) and go east.  This leads to the end of the peninsula.  The overall plan here is for a "Bernina drop" meaning the curve would be covered with backdrop so you can't look down the edge and see both sides at the same time.  I'd envisioned a small farm on this side of the peninsula (where the aforementioned boxcar kits are still stacked)  ::) , placed on a hill to block the vision of the curve from the other side.  I now think the farm would be too small, even for a barn and house, set on a hill.  I need to extend the road which will follow the curve of the track and disappear around the hill.  So another small business would fit here.  I'm going to build FOS' Bernard Tractor Repair and see how it fits here.

Kit Building / Build challenge 2021, second act.
« on: January 25, 2021, 08:01:11 PM »
I usually don't work on the layout in the winter as the rooms are cold, though this has much improved with our new HVAC system from 2019.  The billboard was my first challenge build.  Here's the second.  I ordered some sidewalks for the town scene from FOS, and it was free kit time as well.  I really like these freebies.  They're quick and usually have a lot of personality for such small buildings.  This one is Keen's Gas.  Here's the stuff in the package.  Definitely different materials, thick card sides, one piece of clapboard siding, two "peaks" of wood, one piece of stripwood (!), a sheet for the doors and windows, thick plywood for the store front, pre cut windows (Yeah!), a metal cast chimney, a cardboard roof, a rolled roofingsheet, and a single sheet with a picture and signs, no instructions.

Kit Building / Build challenge 2021, Bar Mills billboard.
« on: January 11, 2021, 03:35:01 PM »
I needed a sign for the side of the Addams avenue structure.  I have several of these Bar Mills Billboards, I don't think they make them anymore, and thought I'd use one.  It's my favorite for "Doctor Recommended" cigarettes.  Gotta keep that waiting room full.

Kit Building / Downtown Deco Addams Ave 3
« on: December 18, 2020, 04:48:46 PM »
On my layout thread, I recently noted that I needed a taller structure than the planned one, to "block" a sight line.  I already have built this kit, and used it for the area, where it seems to work well.  However, I had already planned to use this on another area in the town.  Therefore, I'll build it again to use in one of the two spots.  I may (or may not) change the signs.  It's in the back of the town, and not very visible.

Morning, all.

Up and at 'em, people!  Spent yesterday replacing a decoder in the Twin Cities Zephyr loco.  I had initially thought it was the speaker causing the sound go be on, then go off.  Replaced the speaker, and it did the same thing.  Had to order a new decoder.  Installed yesterday and it works so far.  I need to change out the irritating horn and reverse polarity on the motor.  It's a ESU loksound and I have their programmer, so this is easy.
