Scratchbuilding / A Narrow Gauge Icing Facility
November 23, 2020, 12:20:43 PM
In the January/ February 2017 issue of the Narrow Gauge And Short Line Gazette, Peter Smith wrote an article describing his icing facility. It is a small facility that could serve a narrow gauge branch line. Peter included an HO scale drawing of his model. That drawing will be the basis for my facility.

Over the past few weeks I've been gathering all the parts and pieces needed to build it. Included are two San Juan Models reefers, A good selection of Northeastern scale lumber, Builders-In-Scale shingles and chain, a Musket Miniatures wagon, JL Innovative ice blocks, some Tichy doors, and a couple of bags of detail parts from my stash. For the roof vents I'm using the ones from a Banta Model Works Sargents Roundhouse kit.

My old western town will need a carriage / blacksmith shop. The Barn At Jackson Corners should be a good starting point. I want a building that has been in service for a couple of decades, but was never painted.

A stock pen for Cimarron
As the structures for my Cimarron module set near completion, the stock pen is next on the list. I am scratch bashing it based on a combination of the standard D&RGW drawings for a stock pen and the kit from Crystal River Products. In addition, the Library of Congress has a series of photos taken at Cimarron of the sheep loading process. https://www.loc.gov/photos/?q=fat+lambs+cimarron

I bought the kit years ago, and the wood has dried out, making it quite fragile and brittle. Since the stock pen will be on a module that will travel to train shows, I want it to be more sturdy. So, I'll be building it with strip wood rather than laser cut bass wood.

Kit Building / Campbell's Susannah's Frocks
January 24, 2019, 12:07:08 PM
About 20 years ago, I started building Campbell's Susannah's Frocks kit. Shortly after that, We moved to a new home and I packed up all my train stuff. I finally got around to resuming the kit. I don't remember the reason I painted it two tone purple, but I was probably thinking that it would look Victorian. So, at this point the main walls are glued up and I will be continuing on.

Hi all,
This is my first post on the modelers forum. I model in HOn3. My layout consists of six modules that depict Cimarron, Colorado and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. As a member of the Near Sighted Narrow Gauge club, we display our layout a few times per year at various show, mostly in the Rocky Mountain region.

The next structure that I need for the module is the store that sits behind the ice house. The Wild West Models Miners Supply https://wildwestmodels.com/products/miners-supply.html is very similar except that it is a mirror image of what I want. So, being one who just cannot leave well enough alone, I decided to build the kit as a mirror image.

For starters, the floor is flipped over. And all the walls are all inside-out. So, all the laser etching for the outside walls is now on the inside. I'll be building this structure as it appears in the photos from the early 1880s, before any of the additions. It is in the lower right corner of this image at the Denver Library http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p15330coll21/id/8231/rec/25. The structure at that time had no paint except the windows, which appear to be white, or at least a light color.

I've added horizontal siding to the front wall and random width board and batten siding to the rest of the walls. All the color on the walls was done using Prismacolor markers.
