Hi Karl,

This is one of my FSM's favorite models and you have done a fantastic job on it and in such a short time.

Thanks everybody for all the nice comments.  I wanted to try out some new modeling techniques with this project and for the most part seemed to work.  I have to do a better job on the water next time.

I needed to build one more scratch built structure towards my Master Builder - Structures certificate so I free-lanced this old dilapidated barn and the scenery surrounding it.  I researched old barns and prototypical construction methods on the internet and drew some plans.  I wanted to share the results with everybody.

Hi Martin,

I am now in the process of figuring out the lighting for my model railroad so I can install it before I start the bench work.  What is your opinion of how may lumens per square foot you should use?  There are several manufacturers who make retro fit T8 LED tube lights that you can install in existing fluorescent fixtures.  For some of the  tubes  you have to rewire the fixture around the ballast and others you can use direct.

The diorama looks great.  The detail, weathering etc.  I like it very much.

Thanks for the nice comments.  I need to stop building models for a while and start building my layout.

I have been using the pastels for the last several years.  They work great for getting that actually aged look on your castings.  I to prime the castings with an acrylic paint and use acrylics for any additional basic colors. iWork on a piece of glass which is like a painters palette fo me. It is very easy to mix the paint dusts together and with alcohol. You can take the various shades of rust, Browns and Greys and apply to you castings easily.  Sometimes I just apply a little grey dust to tone down those bright colors on your model and castings.

On metal castings, I will use the replacement product for Blacken It.  I will then use a polishing wheel to polish the wear parts an then dry brush a little acrylic to the non wear parts.

The pastels work fantastic on strip wood for that aging look.  There are some very fine examples of this on the forum such as Mike Englers recent mine build.

There is a whole lot of more information on this on Sierra west scale model' s web site

Thanks for all your nice comments everybody.  I especially want to thank Frank/Erieman for his support through this whole process.  He has been a great help.  My next build will probably be Sierra West Scale Model's Shelby's Marine and promise that I will keep everyone informed during the build process.  But I want to start to build a layout this Fall now that I have the room in my garage.

Frank/Erieman twisted my arm to put pictures of my model on this forum.  I won the Best in Show at the PSR Convention in Scottsdale this weekend along with the Favorite Model Award and Presidents Award.

My model is based on the Sturgeon's Sawmill located in Sebastopol, California.  It is a working museum of a steam powered sawmill.  It is open to the public about four times a year when they have it in operation.

I was able to get a set of plans from a modeler, Boone Morrison.  I adapted the sawmill for the rail delivery of logs to the mill for a future layout.  I drew my own plans and templates to construct it to my needs.

I am including pictures of the original sawmill so that you get an idea what it looked like.

I want to thank those that have helped me in this project.

Hi Frank,

Looking nice. The windows look great.  You sure like to do shingle, don't you.  This is going to be a formidable challenge
