Baggage Car - Daily Chat / Friday - 10/16/2020
« on: October 16, 2020, 06:44:55 AM »
Morning all,

Woo-hoo!  Friday.  I should count how many Friday's I have left to work this year.  Not many I bet because I scheduled most of them as vacation days.   :D

Yesterday at lunch I started painting some rust streaks on the hull of the boat I'm building using oil paint (Yellow Ochre), a small brush to apply the paint and a larger brush dipped in mineral spirits to drag it down the hull.  So far it doesn't look like much but most of it will be covered up with subsequent applications of darker rust colors so fingers crossed.  ::)

Have a great one!

Morning all,

October seems to be flying by!  I'm not sure when it even arrived.   :o

I did a little more painting yesterday.  Nibbling away at it.   ;)

Have a great one!

Vehicle Modeling / Sea Port Model Works 65' Workboat / Lighter
« on: October 11, 2020, 12:39:43 PM »
And now for something completely different!

This is a kit I picked up the EXPO up in Altoona.  It's Sea Port Model Works 65' Workboat / Lighter.  I've build a few Sea Port kits over the years, mostly very small stuff.  The biggest being an N Scale Sardine Carrier for Cuse.  This one is a little more complex than any I've done in the past.

Hard to believe I hadn't even opened the box.  Here's the fun part, breaking the seal to see what I'm getting myself into.   :D

The kit comes with a relatively thick instruction book.

Plus various sealed packages of laser cut parts, metal castings, resin castings, plastic windows, etc. and a resin cast 'waterline' hull which will make it appear as if it's floating in water when placed on a flat surface.

The first thing I noticed is the hull has a bit of curve to it. It doesn't lay quite flat.  If I hold the back end down the front sticks up pretty far.  We'll take care of that a little bit later.

I started by cleaning the castings up with files, sanding sticks, emery boards, etc.  This is a metal cowl casting and I used a fine sanding stick to smooth out the little bit of a part line that it had.

More in a moment... ;)

Morning all,

Squeezed some more workbench time in last night and I'm certainly looking forward to more of the same this weekend.  All I gotta do is survive Friday.  :o

Have a great one!

Morning all,

Got about 15 minutes in at the workbench last night.  Better than nothing I guess.  Looking forward to the weekend though.

Have a great one!

Good Morning all,

Midway thru the work week.  I'm looking forward to the weekend as always.  The first five days after the weekend are the hardest.

I've narrowed down my choices for my next build to these four kits.

Feel free to vote for one if you're at all interested.   ;D

Have a great one!

Put the finishing touches on McLeod's over the weekend.  Now I need to update my thread, pack it up and get it in the mail to Paul.  Next up....TBD.  ;)

Morning all,

T.G.I.F!  For those of us who care.  I definitely care.   ;)

Added some ground cover to a small section of the base I'm working on for McLeod's.  This weekend I'll be able to mount the structure, billboard and other details to it.  Time to start thinking about what to build next.   :)

Have a great one!

Morning all,

Midway through September already.  Apparently time flies even when you're not having that much fun.   :o

Need to add some dirt, grass and weeds to a little base I made for McLeod's this week and I can consider that one wrapped up.  The base was just a practice thing and something to hold the structure and billboard when I mail it to Paul.  They'll be lightly glued down so they can be easily removed (fingers crossed).

Have a great one!

Morning all,

Halfway, kind of, through the short week this week.  I still have vacation days in the bank but I'm saving them for the last quarter.

I've been, rather unsuccessfully so far, trying to use drywall joint compound to make a concrete area on a base.  At least it's cheap.  I'll keep trying until I get it looking halfway decent.  Gives me something to do on my lunch hour.  Take it outside and sand the last application smooth.  Exam the results.  Try again.   ;D

Have a great one!

Morning all,

Really looking forward the upcoming three day weekend.  No major plans, of course, but I won't be sitting at this computer either.  Workbench time here I come!   ;D

Have a great one!

« on: September 01, 2020, 06:31:02 AM »
Morning all,

Well August has come and gone but down here in Florida that doesn't mean the heat/humidity has left us.

No workbench time last night but perhaps tonight.  Or maybe even a little during my lunch hour today.  ;)

Have a great one!

Morning all,

Well the two days full of meetings are behind me and it's back to the normal stuff.  Next two day planning session isn't for another twelve weeks.  I should plan my vacation accordingly.   ;)

No workbench time the last two days.   :(  Maybe tonight.  I need to break out the soldering pencil and hook up the lights.  8)

Have a great one!
