So here is a look at the back porch from the alley.

Other than the slats changed not much is different from 50+ years ago

So I got back to this project..........  recall I was interrupted by the school house project when the grand kids came for Christmas..

I had no idea when I started this that there would be so many glue steps and the need for yellow glue and super glue.  Yellow glue was needed for initial holding of stuff together and allowing for minor adjustments for square before setting aside.  Super glue was needed for simple strength as it would need to be handled so much during the steps of construction.

For whatever reasons in Chicago, there are google earth photos taken in the alleys so I had at least some recollection of what was there.  They have since replaced some of the railing with stuff that has a spacing.  I am building this as it was in 1950 so there are no spaces.

This will get de-fuzzed before painting.

The roof is to be removable so appearances from the top need to be maintained also.

There will be a 2x12 around the edge of the sliding roof so you cannot see under.

I would have liked to not use a 4x12 on the back edge to tie the verticals together but there was no enough strength otherwise.  It is not visible with the roof in place.

Coming in late...

Late arrival so I may need to take the late train  ! ! !

I made a change in a track access to my Nampa Yard and finally got to the ballast.  I operated it for a time to make sure all is well.   The way I do ballast really glues stuff down.  Ya get one chance to do it right.

For now it all looks good.

More time later this afternoon.

Mornin' all

Bench time this afternoon  woohoo ! ! ! !

Tom... as always you find the best old photos.   A commentary on life before sigh ordinances.  i think this is the part that George Sellios really understands.  He has signage everywhere.

Here is a photo of my Grandfather's younger brother in 1912.  He was the only other of the family to come from Greece.  This was taken on South State Street in Chicago.   It was on the east side of the Greek neighborhood that is now replaced by the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle campus.

Another example of signs everywhere.

Have a great weekend.

Jan..............

Sorry to hear of your friend.....

I have considered such thing as you observe and I fall back on some saloon sage that once said, "A guy has a finite amount of stuff to get done in his lifetime,  as far behind as I am, I'm going to live forever!"

Such occurrences do give us pause.

I'm off to the work bench.

Wow !  John..............

A fully framed joist roof............. I am impressed.   No card stock for you.    I've gotten to where I can throw up a framed roof in about an hour.  I'll never go back to card stock................

I long ago lost the argument with some of my "friends" that, "but you can't see it!"    Yeah, but I know it's there.

Thanx for a great build.

Jan............

I have on my to-do shelf a Period Minatures #15 velocipede kit that has to be from the mid 1980's.   They are great kits and force you back to older construction techniques as the are not lazer cut.

I'll be looking in.

thanx

Graffen...........

Your aged flaking white paint is just terrific.

I need to work on a way to duplicate that idea......

It is amazing how much stuff was painted white over the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.  I remember asking my dad when I was a kid what color he was going to paint something around the house.......... including parts of the house.
I recall thinking as a kid how boring white was.   After a while I stopped asking.

Thanx

Checking late today...........

No bench time today..........Maybe late tonight.

it's Friday................  doing Mexican take out and margaritas.

I got back to the brick house project.  I'm doing the back porch.  All wood sticks and such. Pretty fragile until I get it mounted on the back of the structure.  Kind of like standing up a lace curtain with only starch ! ! ! !
