Choices, Choices need so help here!!!
« on: October 07, 2020, 03:14:42 PM »
I have three different colors for the siding I'm looking for some help on what you think would be the better color.

If you've looked at the building framework on R.T. Harding Mining Co. you can see were talking a big building.

I'm just wondering if the brown would be better then the red because of the size of the building.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

As a rule, I think lighter colors will look better.  But I'd vote for your middle color, as a good faded "scale" red.

I agree with Dave, Karl and Darryl, the middle looks like it will be the best choice.  I'd also mix in a few (just a few) strips of each of the others, though.

I vote for mixing it up - I have been taking pictures of old weathered buildings for years and most of the time I find that each board will weather a little different.

Sorry, that I won't be much help, I'm torn between 1 and 2  ;D . Although I am leaning toward the 2nd one.

I'll cast my vote for 2 also although I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.  I think mixing in, here and there, a few of the two you don't chose will add a lot of visual interest as well.  :)

Jerry,

More questions than answers from me.  So, was the building painted initially, or just left to weather?  How old are the boards?  If never painted initially, the age should determine whether the boards should be brownish or gray.  If painted, how old is the paint?

I'm kind of leaning toward John's suggestion of mixing the three colors as long as it doesn't look too "ring streaked and speckled' as my grandfather used to say.

Jerry,

I also vote for the mixing of boards. Nature doesn't weather consistently.

Tom, if you use the same base color on each board, and you weather the boards individually, they will come out different shades due to the wood grain, density etc.  I also vote for the middle one. Sometimes if boards are damaged for some reason and then replaced you could have different colors.  But that would only be a few boards maybe.

Steve,

I'm going to stick my neck out farther. I don't like any. Have you considered an India ink mix. Most wooden buildings i have seen are more variations of grey. The sun typically bleaches out COLOR. As far as matching a building you already have, well, that's a different story. Have you made any samples with various densities of India ink, maybe with a touch of stain one, possible #2.

Just my humble opinion.

Jerry brings up a very good point. I've found the more "random" I try to be in placing different color (or width) boards, the more "planned" it looks.  There is real art in knowing where to place them.

I've had the most success with mixing them together and installing boards without looking at them first--trying to be truly random.

Thank all of you for your opinion and help.

I've decided to g with the middle one with a few of the other boards thrown in here and there.
Or where needed.

I just figured if I keep worrying about the color I'll never get going on this.

Again thanks for your help.
