Build challenge 2018 - Campbell Blacksmith Shop
« on: December 31, 2017, 04:22:27 PM »
I'd like to join in... a very 'Old School' wood kit. Nothing like Campbell. Always found them so suitable for railroad settings.

The original price sticker on this box said $14.98

Here's the contents

I'll be watching too.  This will be like a flashback.  It's been over 30 years since I've tackled a Campbell kit.   :o

I love the Campbell designs, and the instructions are first-rate.  One hint, if the instructions don't mention it:  Cover the back of the wood with masking tape before you cut out the window/door openings.  This helps keep the (dried out) wood from splitting.

Dave....

My thing to do for splitting is prestain the wood and then stiffen it with super glue.  Usually not the whole panel panel but anywhere near a cut.

I use your method if Iím doing an interior as the super glue is hard to hide.

Thanx
Bob

A million years ago Dyna Products (NY) offereda blacksmith kit that came with some super highly detailed tools. There must still be some of them out there.

Did that last night, pictures tomorrow...
In my younger days, I would have rushed thru these steps, and caused myself more problems. I am much older, and more patient now. Plus, it's amazing the difference a new blade in the knife makes when starting a new project.

Now I cut out the window openings and test the fit

then I did a light spray of primer to seal the BACK side of the walls
