Tremendous effort, Bob. Looks great. The light effects add a lot. I need to give that more thought as I do things in the future.

Thanks for sharing.

Just walked the beast and threw down a couple of yogurts. Heading down into the basement now to get to work!

Vince, I did a thread on signaling my HO layout on the other forum ( ).  I needed Searchlight heads and didn't want to deal with surface-mount LEDs, so I used the Oregon Rail Supply heads and 3mm bicolor LEDs.  The widow of the ORS founder had a booth at the Portland NMRA National Train Show in 2015 and said she planned to keep the company going.  But I've seen stock getting thin at distributors.

If I had to re-signal my layout, I'd definitely use Free State Systems ladders and platforms. I would use NJI 2-light dwarf signals, as I was successful at converting them to bi-color 1.8mm LEDs.  I would scratchbuild single-light searchlight dwarf signals using John Purbrick's method.  I would have to research what to do for mast-type searchlight heads.  I seem to recall some expensive lost wax brass castings, but I couldn't get 30 or more unless they were in current production.

Thanks, James. Great information. For the LEDs I was planning to use RR Cirkits tri-color LEDS. Seems to be a decent product. I did look at the Oregon site but really couldn't get a feel for how realistic the mast kits really were (no ladders, equipment boxes that I saw). Sounds like you used just the heads and supplied the rest of the detail yourself. Your pictures in the other thread look really good. The products from NJ and others look pretty nice. But, I've had a hard time finding something in a hobby shop to look at. Guess I will need to take a flyer.

Morning all,

Sorry Vince.  I don't have a clue on signals.

It's amazing what you can find on the internet.  I searched for the USS Westmoreland, the ship my Dad served on in WWII, and found pictures and history of the ship.  I even found one with the crew and, sure enough, my Dad was in the picture.  The Westmoreland was a Bayfield Class Attack Transport assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during WWII.

Have a great one!

Cheez, Bob. That's amazing. How did you ever pick him out of that picture of zillions of teeny little heads?

Enjoying the warm-up. 45F in Chicago yesterday.

I'm looking for commercial HO scale signals. Kits or pre-assembled OK. I saw the thread on scratchbuit thread in the Lighting forum but I'm not looking to do that. Does anyone have a recommendation or maybe there's a more appropriate forum for that sort of topic?

Morning. Hopefully you'll get a nice box of chocolate toy trains from your loved one's today.

No, no, no. Chocolate is chocolate. Railroading is railroading. Never the 'twain shall meet. Yuk yuk.

fitting together the structures onto the dock to see how everything will come together....

Yes, indeed - the Red Hook is beautiful. Nice idea doing the individual shingles for the roof cap. Really works.

Morning all,

Just back from my walk, bumped it up to four miles today.

I'm going to back off kit building, but will continued what's on the bench, and resume work on the layout. I want to get moving on the third level. So much to do but little time in the day to do it. I already have a "round tuit".

Have a great day ya'll.

Another photo from Cliff Powers soon to be Fallen Flay Magnolia Route.

Great scene. Did you use one of those SWAT team under-the-door camera thingies to get that shot?  ;)

Beautiful. Your tar around the roof vents is nice and "trim." Not three scale feed wide like mine are. My recollection is that I used toothpicks to apply a mixture of white glue and Polly S Grimy Black it but they still came out very fat and blobby. What is your technique?

Thanks for your well-wishes. Sorry for the confusion T.C.  There were a couple of photos missing but it is because I deleted them. During my computer meltdown I tried to post some photos with my phone with minimal success. I have resized and reposted since and you aren't missing anything. Actually there is one classic missing and I can't find it anywhere. I'm sure it will turn up someday.

I have the walls together and the roof panels on. Many details to add (rafter tails, vents, stacks, roof trim, etc.)
but everything fits, is square, and perfectly flat, and I am proud of the corners.

Looks fantastic, Mike. That stonework really provides a nice accent to the whole structure.

Hello and good morning. More snow in Chicago. Well over a foot total accumulation in the last few days.

No snow in the basement, tho.

Happy Saturday. A little more snow in Chicago this morning then hopefully this pattern is finished.

Trains, trains, and more trains today.

That's the plan, at least. Somehow it frequently gets derailed, though (see what I did there?)
