New Haven RR "Wire Train"
« on: March 26, 2017, 03:27:59 PM »
I'm working on the New Haven wire train in HO scale. I have been kicking this idea around for a very long time but only recently have I decided to try building it for my New Haven layout that's in the planning stage. My resources for this project are a small number of photos I found in two books about the NH railroad. Attached are progress photos. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

As of 29 March 2017, I am adding a new addition which is work in progress, the wire supply flat car that makes up part of the wire train for your review and comments. Oh, I failed to mention that all these train cars are scratch built from cardboard. That is, the only things that are pre-made are the brake wheels, trucks, weights and couplers.

NH junkie,
How do you say Nice train in 3 different languages?  I find the platform car very interesting!  Does it come with an NMRA height gauge? ha.  Nice modeling, welcome!  Thanx Thom...

Thank you for your kind words. I'm working on the fourth car of the set as I write this. However, I will have to go back to the other three as I find details that I missed in the initial construction and will have to add them. I'm trying to get them done by 27 April. There's a model train contest on the 29th in Green Bay Wisconsin that I plan to enter. The wire train should turn a few heads of those few, familiar with the Eastern Corridor.

Model train contest, interesting  I use to live just down 43 to 94 in Waukegan, ill. for a short spell.  Can't wait for the next pictorial you post.  Speaking of which, I like to and always encourage any serious modeler to always take pics of their work and then study for a couple days.

A camera of some type should be in every modeler's toolbox.  Because as you must know, as we view our work, our minds fill in all the missing links, details, the should of's & could of's. Hell mine even adds the coffee and sandwich in the missing lunch box on the cab floor. (which only i can see because I forgot to model it). ha.

My point is pictures tell a thousand words, ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_picture_is_worth_a_thousand_words ) but mostly it don't lie, unlike my mind.  So like you said, you start to find details & defects which need improvement from the pictures.

It should be a standard tool for models.  One question.  What is your name? Just curious tiz all.    Thanx Thom...

My name is Chuck Valentine. I grew up around the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroad. It has been my passion and I have waited a long time to build this layout, now that I have a place to do it, up here in Seymour WI, just 14 miles west of Green Bay. Ironically, railroad modelers up here scratch their respective heads muttering, "Eastern Corridor, catenary wire, is this guy out of his mind?" My response, "Maybe!"  ;D

Hi Chuck:

Interesting project and very nicely done. I was somewhat interested in the New Haven at one point.
