Hi All:
Back to FSM. Will be building Houligan's Alley.
Karl
Looking forward to it Karl. Another one I don't have so it'll be fun to follow along. ;)
Lets see how along it takes the energizer bunny to build this kit.
Oh , great , I will be following along , or are you already finished ;) ;) ;)
Following.
Hope I got here in time!!!!! I will be watching as long as I can.
Jim
Karl
I will be watching!
Hi All:
t WOW!!!! This is quite the list of followers. Glad to have all of you aboard. Thanks so much.
Karl
Lurking and learning.
Awesome, this one is on my shelf, but got a few ahead of it!! looking forward to following your build thread!
I've build it some years ago, very funny kit.
I will follow your effort on this one.
Eric
I'm on board :) ..........Dennis
Hey BadOGuy, Bob C., Erric & Dennis:
Glad to have you guys along for the ride. 1st thing I have to do is get the base made I believe 10 x 22 inches.
Karl
Thank God I'm not to late!
Always love a good Karl build!!
Jerry
Hey Jerry:
Glad to have you along.
Karl
I'll also be keeping an eye on this build Karl.
Done yet? 😁
Hi Karl,
I'll be joining the following team. Or maybe in my case it's the lurking team.
What a great choice of Kits. I have to admit, this is one of my favorite kits that George created.
;D ;D 8)
Hi Karl,
Best of luck on this build. Can't truly say I will be following as we're leaving for a 10-day vacation tomorrow--no internet, no phone, no media, but best of all no work. I love my job but I love it even more when I can get away once in a while. I'll check back in October, but you'll likely be near done.
May your #11 blade never chip and your paint never clump.
--George
Count me in as a watcher, too.
One of the few, if not only, FSM kits that could possibly go with my diorama.
Jim
I'll be expanding the list by one Karl..... :)
Hey MAP, Dave K., Janbouli, Bruce Oberlleitner, Opa George, Jim F, and GP Demayo:
Thanks for following along guys. Great to have you along for the rid. This is my 2nd build of this kit as Frank Bernard and I built one for George before it came out.
Hope you enjoy the build. Starting today on Sept the 19th.
Karl
Karl
count me in as well! 2 pages on the forum and no progress pics yet! Then again, knowing Karl it is probably finished by now!
OK Darryl:
You are in for the ride. Thanks Karl
Hey guys:
Having trouble posting. Lets see if this works.
Karl
Hey All :
Think I fixed it. Didn't realize pics were to big. Bricks are installed on the wall and Interior bracing has been added.
Karl
Hey All:
Here's a picture of the painted back wall.
Karl
Hey All:
Finished the back wall. Hope it looks OK.
Karl
Nice job Karl. Are you keeping the window frames grey?
Karl,
I love that stucco! That's dead on for both color and the sand in the finish, at least for where I live in upstate NY.
Hi Curt:
Yes the windows are painted as per the instructions. They are D&H gray. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Hey Jerry:
Thanks. I did not use the stucco material provided in the kit. I used Liquitex Ceramic Stucco from the craft store. It's premixed.
You just brush it on.
Thanks Karl
Looking good, Karl.
I always assumed those bricks were laser etched into the wood. Are they separate pieces that you add?
Cheers, mark.
Karl,
Great start, love the stucco.
Tom ;D
real nice work Karl.
I am totally a fan of the Liquitex stucco, it comes out nice with a good "scale" to it. I like to hit it with sandpaper after it dries to knock off any high spots, other than that it, I agree- its super easy to apply.
Hey Tom:
thanks buddy appreciate the compliment.
Karl
hey Bob:
Thanks I totally agree with you. I'll try your sand paper trick.
Karl
Hi All:
Thought I'd show A photo of the wall with Stucco progression. Here is one of the wall with Liquitex stucco applied and painted Polyscale Aged Concrete Per the instructions. On to the weathering.
Karl
Hi All:
A&I has been added.
Karl
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Dennis:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Karl,
What a nasty looking wall and stucco, I love it. as you tell me-
"Keep the pictures coming!"
Tom ;D
Hey Tom:
thanks buddy glad you like it.
Karl
Hi All:
Walls are finished and assembled. On to the roof. Here's a few pics.
Karl
Karl
It looks great. There is no such thing as a white stucco wall around steam locomotives.
Looking good, Karl.
I love the alcove to the personal door - I'd never noticed that in this kit before.
Cheers, Mark.
Hey John & mark:
thanks for the compliments much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Guys:
here's a couple of progress Shots. Roof has been added It is painted Rust-Oleum Camouflage Army Green. Canopies have been added. My Corrugated is by Paper-creek. Rafter tails have also been added.
Karl
Karl,
As usual, it looks great! Stucco is perfect, roofing looks good. I like the worker in the window, too.
Karl- I really didn't like the wall coloring in the first wall photos you shared but put together it looks terrific. I guess I have problems visualizing things at times. Well done.
I get sidetracked for a couple days and I'm liable to miss an entire Karl build ;D . I love the stucco effect and, as always, the coloring & weathering. Great job Karl!
John
Hey Mark:
Somehow missed your post. yes the bricks are separate metal castings that fit into laser cut holes. And thanks for the compliment.
Karl .
Hey Jerry:
thanks for the great compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Curt:
Yeah you probably saw it before the dry-brushing was done. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Hey John:
thanks for the great compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Oh , wow, superb, love the brickwork.
Hey Janbouli:
thanks buddy appreciate it.
Karl
Hey guys:
Ok the front wall is finished. I did not use the sidewalk material in the kit. I had some laser cut side walks that were the same size so I used them. Painted Aged concrete with concrete curbs. Added the cellar door, A barrel, A trashcan, Newspapers and a seated figure. Here's a pic.
Karl
That really looks great.
I like the guy in the window Karl. Nice touch!
Hey Oldguy:
thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Bruce:
thanks much appreciated. He's in the instructions.
Karl
Hi All:
Added the telephone pole that I missed and also finished up the sway bracing with corrugated panels and signs.
Karl
Karl,
I appreciate all the little subtle things you do that add up to an outstanding model. Your stucco, sidewalk and curb are slightly different concrete colors. Add in the painted steps and the roofing weathered with grayish tones on the green. Your colors are muted and compliment each other. Your overall execution is great. Thanks for sharing your efforts with us.
Karl,
What did you use for the cellar entrance? Is it a casting from the kit?
Very nice modeling Karl.
Hey Jerry:
Glad you like how everything looks. Thanks for the great compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Chris:
Yes it is a casting from the kit. It is concrete with wood doors.
Karl
Hey Curt:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Karl, I missed the first week or so of your thread and am just getting current with your progress. Wonderful work and weathering, as always. This is a kit I have been considering, so your build thread is valuable. To echo the others, "keep the pictures coming." :)
--George
Hey George:
thanks for the great compliment. Much appreciated. Glad you are along for the ride.
Karl
Hi All:
finished the Cupola on the roof today. On to the water tank. Telephone pole looks crooked in the photo but it is actually straight. Dullcoat is still drying on the tar. Looks nice and rough just like on Georges model.
Karl
Looking good Karl!
Hey Steve:
Thanks buddy appreciate it.
Karl
What a start for the kit Karl! Looks amazing from the photos. I bet it looks even better in person.
;D ;D ;D
Hey Bruce:
thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
spent about 2 days building the rooftop water tank. George uses thread for the tank bands. The water tank band I've seen are flat so I use rust colored paper the double face sticky side tape. The turnbuckles are I believe Tichy Train Group. Hope it looks Ok.
Karl
Very nice Karl.
Hey Curt:
thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Looks really good Karl.
Jim
Hey Jim:

Finished up the F B Casey Wood Working Co. and added it to the base along with the track. Rails are glued down with 5 minute epoxy. Street and parking are are 1/32nd thick task board. Also added scenery around the area. I will scenic the rear wall ground area next. then on to The R. J. Skoots Fishing Supply Co. Skoots was one of George's cats. Still have details to add to the freight platform.
Here's some pics of Casey's Wood Working.

Karl
I must admit Karl this is one of my favorites by you! Excellent work!!
Jerry
Hey Jerry:
Thanks. Glad you are enjoying the build. On to the Skootz building.
Karl
love it Karl! some great modeling there! Maybe I asked you this before on another build, but I forgot: what do you use on the cardstock to make it look like concrete (primer/colors/ type of paint, powders......???)
Same question sir........Dennis
Hey Bob & Dennis:
The card stock is painted with Floquil Aged concrete, then a was of A&I and finally dry-brushed with antique white. Some times I use Apple Barrel Country Grey.
Karl
Thank you Karl, Dennis
thanks Karl, I ran out of my Floquil paints a long time ago...... they smelled bad but I really did like them.
Well Done Mr. K!
Hey Dennis & Bob:
You are quite welcome.
Karl
Hey Darryl:
thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Been working on the Skootz Fish Co. named after George's cat. I change my color for this. I used Floquil Earth for the Walls, and Rustoleum Gray auto primer for the windows, Doors & trim. I added the 1/16th Sq. trim at the bottom of the bump out on the right side. Signs are weathered with A&I. Glass in the windows is clear Gallery Glass. Shades are from A yellow envelope. Fish casting is done with Dark A&I only. I applied 3 coats. All Is dry-brushed with Apple Barrel Country Grey.
On to the roof and dormers.
Karl
Very nice job Karl.
Looks great, Karl. Those colors go really well together.
--george

Cheers, Mark.
Hi Ed & Mark:
Hey guys thanks for the compliments much appreciated. Mark it is actually grey.
Thanks:
Karl
Hi All:
Have been working on the R. J. Skoots & Son Co. Been working on the roof. The kit says to use a folded piece of paper for the ridge. Ad can be seen I decided to use separate cap shingles as on a real roof. One dormer is finished with one to go. then I will weather the roof. Here's a photo.
Karl
Now that's craftsmen skill.WOW!!!!!!!!
Karl,
I really like the building. That ridge cap is so awesome. I have tried to use individual shingles for a cap but have trouble getting them on straight. My hat is definitely off to you!!!
I agree with Jerry--your work and patience in putting on cap shingles in fantastic. Looks great, Karl.
--George
Great job with the ridge shingles Karl..... 8)

Hi guys:

Karl
Karl,
Love it my friend.
Tom ;D
It looks great Karl!
Hi Tom & John:
thanks guys for the grat compliments much appreciated.
karl
Hi Guys:
Finished the Skootz Fish Co. Skootz was one of George's cats. The sign on the roof does not come with the kit. It is A sign that George had and my friend George worked on it so I could use it on models. What better spot for it.
Karl
Karl, great job on that structure and overall nice fit into the scene. That sign you added is really nice.
--George
Very nice Karl.
Hey George:
thanks buddy much appreciated. Glad you liked the sign.
Karl
Hey Curt:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.

Not to much farther to go on this one. Watson's Tool is almost finished. Have to add window sash, Finish the sidewalks and add the details. Also I used a Paper Creek I found in my stuff. I thought it was kinda neat so I used it instead of the roofing in the kit. Hope you guys like how it looks so far.
Karl
really nice work! I have this kit on the shelf,,, my favorite part of this kit is the R J Skoot's building. I've got some of that Paper Creek material also, its pretty cool- shame he went out of business. I've found some packages at train shows over the years.
