Title: The Ressurection & Addition Railroad
Post by: stan.b.shields on March 30, 2015, 03:25:49 PM
OK, new guy here, gonna try to post some pictures and words about what I'm building in the hopes that they don't get me thrown off the train here :-)
I'm building a layout that incorporates one half of a 4X8 that was nearly done when it had to be moved about 12 years ago.
I would love to get some dialog going with you guys while I attempt to get my structure skills up to your level, wish me luck.
I'm one of those model railroaders for whom the trains are mostly an excuse to build the structures. OK, here goes...
This is the 2Ft X 8Ft section (half of the 4X8) that was salvaged after moving it from the small condo it was built in about 12 years ago:

This photo was taken after removing the clear plastic that covered it for 12+ years, most of the structures had been removed. If you look closely at the lower left you can see the super-detailed, very realistic mouse turds! They must have thought they had entered a time warp and were living in a very small village :-)

Stan,
Very nice start. Sorry to hear that it sat for 12 years, but a little cleaning and it looks great. How about a couple more pictures from different angles? I like the different levels. Speaking of an excuse to build structures, how about a couple of picture s of what you have built already? Is the 2 x 8 the total size of the layout or are you going to add on to what we see? sorry for all the questions, but I like what I see so far. I know what you mean about building structures - it is an infectious portion of the railroad and sometimes overtakes you. I look forward to seeing more of your project.

Those could be lizard turds from MassiveRalph when he thought it was his personal solarium!
He has NO RESPECT!!!
Keep hangin' around here and you'll quickly learn how we rag on each other.

12 years is no problem as long as you're back enjoyin' it - you've got a great head start on a bunch of us!

Stan,
Was the layout all done in HO or did it have some HOn3 track too ?
Will follow the rebuild too.

Stan,

Add me to the list of followers. The 2x8 is a nice place to get started and the scenery can be revitalized with no problem.

Wow, thanks for all the interest guys. Here's another angle of the salvaged part of the layout. It was 4X8 originally. Tom- You have a good eye! There is a mine run on the upper level that crosses diagonally and connects the mine to an ore bin in the small yard. It runs back and forth (or did) stopping at the loading/unloading spots automatically. I used the Circuitron auto-reverse modules with the photocells to control it.

Here's a shot showing some of the HOn3 line that services the mine, more mouse turds visible on the lower left :-)

I found this drawing by Dave Meeks and decided to use it as a basis for the addition:

Here's a drawing I did of the old salvaged section added to Dave's concept drawing, the narrow gauge shortline is omitted:

And here's the benchwork completed showing the original salvaged section on the right and the addition based on Dave Meeks's drawing on the left.

Stan,

The new layout track plan is very good. It allows you to add later, if desired. Lots of great looking scenery coming your way.

Thanks Tom. I wish I could have eliminated the "race track" section with the long straight track along the edge but there was no avoiding it. It's gonna be a challenge to make that area look like something. (all ideas are welcome) The outside track is a steep uphill grade needed to clear the track under it. Incorporating the salvaged section was more of a challenge than I thought it would be but I couldn't bring myself to not use it.
