Title: N-scale architect Wharton Iron becomes a grain elevator.
Post by: Janbouli on September 19, 2015, 07:34:36 PM
This a build of the Wharton Iron Mill by N-scale Architect, however I will be changing it to a grain elevator , mill complex.

The contents of the box, I bought this 2nd hand and I'm not sure all of the parts are there, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Using templates provided I will be cutting out walls the next few days.

Nice looking kit. I have a couple N scale Architect kits in my N scale town. They're both great!

Thanks for sharing Jan!  That's a nice looking structure.  I've built one N-Scale Architect kit.  It's in John's N Scale town.   :)  It was a fairly complex, but fun build.  You have to cut the walls out for this one using templates?  Wow.  In N Scale none the less.  That will make this one a bit more of a challenge.   :o

Jan,

I always look forward to your builds. Many of the structures don't even appear to be N scale.

Thanx all for following, it does seem that this one will be a long build.

A few hours of cutting.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fwhmill%2Fwhmill4.jpg&hash=4fe71cfc0029749780be37a614819968cddbafcd)

And some small cuts to break the monotony.

Adding bracing to the walls.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fwhmill%2Fwhmill10.jpg&hash=1b00e81b3c9e1aa48ba6c048aba94ba6cb6863c6)

Starting some sub-assemblies.

More walls, more bracing.

Wow. I've never seen a kit where you have to cut out the walls. That's a tough job...I thought that was called scratch building.

Using a magnetic Jig and several weights to assemble another sub-structure.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fwhmill%2Fwhmill13.jpg&hash=a8711e9df1f85d07b282f109d5ab09c36ab22672)

To the left the jig with the last ( for now ) sub-structure , to the right the other sub-structures , given a wash of A&I and ready for painting.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fwhmill%2Fwhmill14.jpg&hash=d5afcd4130bb48669f307c4388a3af4de54e855d)

Painted all the subs with Badger Model Flex Caboose Red, first time I used this paint. Definitely a nice paint for wood structures, goes on very smoothly and is translucent enough to give a lightly weathered effect with the A&I wash visible. The sub to the back right is the one in the jig on the last photo. The rest of the weathering and painting will be done later on.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fwhmill%2Fwhmill15.jpg&hash=1c52068a055e07ccec91cd2c0b82aa173e2b1b01)
Title: Re: N-scale architect Wharton Iron becomes a grain elevator.
Post by: Janbouli on October 03, 2015, 03:05:56 PM
Started weathering by using a small drill , scraping it along the underside of the boards.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fwhmill%2Fwhmill16.jpg&hash=fae54b96d43fd407a7731ccda8d8d055efb9c632)

A darker wash of A&I for the underside , and then another wash of A&I for the total structure.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fwhmill%2Fwhmill17.jpg&hash=ba5bad82557cd3602f01bcd0e80a3ffd13bbf662)

Using green and gray powders to give it the worn wood look.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fwhmill%2Fwhmill18.jpg&hash=c31ed0e23011b3cf24532f0b220e81d28cb6e67d)

And completed by a dry brush with light gray acrylic paint.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fwhmill%2Fwhmill19.jpg&hash=b4b3a308e4e924034b165d808d62a1ba9ca880cd)

Thanks John , the drill thing was holding a drill bit ( is that what you call them in English ) between my fingers and scraping with it.

Started on the roof bases, this is my way of holding down sloped roofs using weights and plastic bags filled with ballast.

Some of the roofs installed, lots of angles and shapes.

As I said it looks great. Didn't think I was gonna like the black roof but on the finsihed model it all comes together. Great job. Any signs gonna go on it? Can't wait to see the detailing and see it placed on its home on your RR. Trackwork and scenery also looks great.

The build turned out great. I like the worn and weathered look on the bottom of the main building. Are you going to add the weathering to the smaller sub-structure to the left as viewed in the above photos?

Not sure yet , that part of the building was built at a later time, so maybe some weathering but not as much.
