Title: Somerville Junction a kit from N-scale Architect
Post by: Janbouli on November 05, 2015, 06:26:22 PM
Starting a larger kit this week, a bit intimidating one Somerville Junction by N-scale Architect.

Thanks for following , I will be starting after the weekend.

Is there anyone that has any experience or tips to make lasercut plywood look like concrete. The instructions say to paint grey and then speckle with black, but it seems to me that it will stay looking like grey painted wood. Luckily the large bin is resin, which shouldn't be a problem to look like concrete.

Seal the grain (shellac or sanding sealer), then lightly sand.  Spray prime, if you still see wood grain then sand some more :-)  If you have an airbrush, you can try moving the airbrush -away from- the structure to see if you can get the paint to come out 'grainy' (because the paint dries before it hits the surface of the model.)

To color concrete, I like artist Unbleached Titanium with a -very small amount- of olive green added.

Hi Jan:

Paint it concrete, add A&I wash and dry-brush with Antique white. Thats what I would do. Dave Might have a point about priming it first.

Thanks I did some testing on some scrap wood that has already been primed, will show the results tomorrow.

With John's transition to HO Narrow Gauge I think my days of building N Scale structures are behind me.   :D

Glad to have you along Bob , on we go.

Wooden parts that will have to look like concrete ready for first coat of primer.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fsumjunc%2Fsumjunc4.jpg&hash=786ff17cc4eff07dd6964d17091bf9e595116ae8)

The castings washed with detergent and rinsed thoroughly ready for priming.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fsumjunc%2Fsumjunc5.jpg&hash=5b6bb40a56206cbee487ecd153fc84c4eac724a3)

Some tests on leftover primed wood to determine what will look best as concrete. One is a thick layer of acrylic paint , one a layer of Lukas paste with texture, and two of them with Acrylic matt varnish in different thickness.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fsumjunc%2Fsumjunc6.jpg&hash=1adfe70cee2f5ddc8b41348f1dfb4952a9f240ce)

All 4 pieces after a layer of concrete paint from Floquil, the one treated with the thick layer of acrylic paint first looks best. It's the one at the lower left hand. The upper left hand one is with the Lukas paste , I think I accidentally hit the nail for concrete roads.

Putting pieces together that will paint easier afterward.

Always good to see "experimental model railroading" with how to get the best concrete effects.

There are 2 railings in the kit that need to be bent, to do that soak them in water for about 15 minutes , then tape them to a bottle or cup with the same curve as the platform where these should fit to. After they have dried install and paint them.

No there are not , they are concrete pillars so I suppose there shouldn't be any on the prototype. But I am working on exactly that at the moment , covering up those tabs.

Hi Jan:

why not try some type of stucco to fill the holes then paint. I know, try the light weight spackle with your finger tip then paint.

Jan, ok. Take a look at using Gesso. It takes paint good and can trowelled or painted on.

Vallejo makes an acrylic putty that is very easy to use, but it is also expensive.

Thanks for the tips , I used a filler that suits wood and plaster, and it seems to be working.

First filler applied.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fsumjunc%2Fsumjunc23.jpg&hash=b5eb3b799057bf2aa0794cdd5d485d3e2969c2a8)

Then sanded with an emery board.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fsumjunc%2Fsumjunc24.jpg&hash=612b02c7f38eddaeb0f694cabe522799ef7e9b74)

Coat of Woodland Scenic Top Cover, I like it but not satisfied enough , so I am doing another filler - sanding - coat of paint.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fsumjunc%2Fsumjunc25.jpg&hash=435657ea94846d19bb97e6d861972304b762ec6b)

Another part of the build after filler - sanding - paint.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fsumjunc%2Fsumjunc26.jpg&hash=7de1072b7a2f783c567a9a833b79501bad839323)

This is the platform build for the watertank, pretty straight forward except for one thing. The drawings in the manual are not correct.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janbouli.com%2Fimages%2Fgebouwen%2Fsumjunc%2Fsumjunc30.jpg&hash=92ae43b9baf42dee6d85ec0f1309f010c29661d5)

Build it like most of you would do without reading the manual. Like in the following photo's.

The rust on the tank looks very good.  There are 'accelerants' that will make oils dry faster.

Thanx  Bob , a fellow Dutch modeler told me of the accelerator as well, but it needs to be mixed with the oil before use.  Would the oil paint be tacky enough to do some powder work on it?

I've tried it once.  It speeds drying, but it's still a lot slower than acrylics!

Thank you John, the color is Aged Concrete, I think the weathering with powders went well.

I did the black specks on the roofs by holding a black chalk about 10 inches above the model and just scraping some off with a hard brush, then I sprayed matt varnish on it to seal it.

The weathering really makes the details stand out.

Jan,

Looks fantastic, the aged concrete looks like it should on an old coaling tower. Very natural looking to me1

Wonderful job!

Might want to add some 'soot' weathering by the coal chutes.  Otherwise, a very good job.  Large monolithic structures are hard to weather well.

Yes , right Dave, I realized that I had weathered the structure and then added the chutes , glad you reminded me of this.

Jan, you must have steady hands to get that quality you did in N scale. Good job.

One tip - when water comes iff roofs, windows, door etc, it carries crud that clings to the surfaces and leaves a cone (wider at the top) of weathering down the wall(s). Think like the rain and follow its path as you weather.  :)
