Hi all, Just getting started on the new harbor which will be connected to my Snug Harbor diorama. This new section will not be a diorama, I'm going to build it in place on the layout.
All my progress pictures will be posted on this thread.

Sam
Thank you Sam .
Sam
It looks like a great project! I'm looking forward to following your progress. We all need to stop by - you are doing some great modeling.
Thanks John, I'm not sure if Robert is going to ask me if I wanted to be on the tour Sunday after the Expo or not, but you are very welcome to stop by along with anybody else. I only live 30 to 35 minutes for the Expo.
Sam
Sam that is some beautiful work .... I'll be sure to keep tuning in.

Robert, I sent you a PM check your messages
Thanks
Sam
Good evening All,
I didn't get much done on the layout today. I only added some ground foam around the road. Next I'll be adding some shrubs and grass and some bushes.

I hope to get more done tomorrow, before the Pats game.
Have a great rest of the weekend.
Sam
Great looking addition. I don't readily recognize the ship in the photos. Could you tell me more about it. Thanks
Sam,
The new addition is looking great. I'm enjoying the progress.
Tom ;D
Nice work Sam..... 8)
Thank you everyone for all the kind words. I think I have to start building some docks for around the harbor. While I'm waiting for some
northeast scale lumber,, I'll be doing a little more landscaping.
John, thanks for asking, those boats you see are New England fishing trawlers. They were mostly seen in Boston, New Bedford, and Gloucester, Mass, and along the
Maine coast. From the late 40's to the 90's, and there are still a few around today. They are called Eastern Rig trawlers. What is mostly used today are Western rig trawlers which is much like a shrimp boat.
Hope this helps
Sam
Good morning all,
Not to much to post this morning, but I did manage to get my seawall in, and weathered. My order from Northeast Scale Lumber came in, so now I can start building the docks.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1228.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee460%2FSam_Novello%2Fsea%2520wall%2520001.jpg&hash=08fb3447a29f9c3794216df10287a009fe87f821) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/Sam_Novello/media/sea%20wall%20001.jpg.html)
This will be it for a few days, hopefully I can get one or two docks built this weekend.
Till next time :
Have a great day
Sam
Love the seawall. Is it carved right into the foam?
John
No John, the sea wall is not carved into the foam. I made my own molds and cast them with Durum's Water putty.
Thank you
what the happened to the photo's??
Sam
Well anyway. Here is the seawall again.

Sam
Sam, when I look at the both pages of this thread, I see the pictures. 'View Image' on one from page 1 worked, fetching it from a photobucket URL that I presume is your account there.
Sam
Great to hear you are going to be on the EXPO tour - looking forward to seeing your layout. I have a question for you since your a local guy - how should one get to the EXPO if they want to avoid flying into Boston and driving out from the airport. Is there a better airport choice?
Sam
I also see the pictures.
James, I don't know why the pictures vanished, but they suddenly came back for some reason.
Thanks
Sam

John, good to hear from you. As far as airports go, The only other option I can think of would be the Manchester NH Airport. That would be a straight shot down I93 then across 114 to the Expo.
The Manchester AP is a whole lot less confusing than Logan.
Sam,
The new harbor is looking really good. I won't be at this Expo so unfortunately I'll miss the tour.

Good morning gang,
I got the train room all cleaned up and ready for the Tour-De-Chooch this Saturday. I haven't made much progress on the " new harbor" because of it. I just placed a few buildings on it, just for for the tour. It's only to give the visitors a general idea of where I'm going with this. I will get back working on it after this weekend.
Sorry for the bad lighting.

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone,
Sam
Good luck with the Tour, Sam. I've got things under control but there will be more cleaning late in the day Friday.
John, Manchester, NH is indeed much less scary to drive to and from. But public transport to and from the Expo is not an option. And you may pay extra - fewer airlines serve Manchester and each of them charges considerably more for routes where they have a monopoly.
Good morning,
I had a pretty good turnout for the T-D-C so I didn't get much done on the new harbor but, I did at least manage to layout the footprints for my docks yesterday.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1228.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee460%2FSam_Novello%2Ffootprint%2520001.jpg&hash=851c0d1b5f608708a9358df013b7e90c475e5697) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/Sam_Novello/media/footprint%20001.jpg.html)
I am now in the process of getting all my lumber stained so I can start building them.
Till next time, have a great week.
Sam.
I decided to frame up the first dock, before the stain went on. I will have to stain all the rest of the lumber before I can start the rest of the construction. when that's done I mount it on the layout, and then start on dock #2.

Looks great Sam. This is my favorite kind of modeling. I'll be watching closely and, most likely, touring at the EXPO
John
Thank you Tom, I'll keep posting as I go along.
Thanks Mark, the other side will also have odd shapes.
Thank you John, seaports, and waterfront modeling is my favorites as well. Hope you can stop by on the tour.
Thanks all,
Sam
Good afternoon,
Well it took a while, but I am just about done with the first of 3 wharf's. I still need to add a few more details before I start the 2nd one. cutting each and every plank to size really takes up a lot of time but I think it's worth it.

Thank you Jan.
The dock isn't glued down yet, it's just placed there for now. I will lift it off when all the wharf's are done and then I'll pour the water. I build the wharf at the work bench and I place them on the layout just to make sure they fit. Once everything is hunky dory I'll make the water and set the docks in it before it sets.
Sam
Should have known that's what a clever modeler would do ;D , keep progress coming Sam , I know most of us here just love harbor scenes.

This is looking great! Really enjoying the thread.
I got my second wharf pretty much done today, and I'm checking to see how it fits, and with very little effort it seems to fit pretty good. So now I'm about to start the third wharf, and then I can start to do scenery. I need to build more building kits and also a pile driver barge.

Hi gang, I didn't get anything done on the harbor the last two weeks, because I ran out of scale lumber for the last dock. North East scale lumber was closed at the end of the year due to inventory. So while I was waiting for my lumber order to come in I started to build this. from Seaport Model works. It's the Coastal Passenger Steam Ferry. Kit #HI36W. I'm really enjoying building
This one.

Sam
Great work! Your thread is inspiring me to make some design changes on my upcoming harbor scene on the S&S RR.
Sam that is some fine work. I have the same ferry but mine will be a long time to being finished. What is the cup like appendage on your spring clamp and plier???
Looking very nice, Sam!
I bought one of their coastal freighters at the expo. Hope it comes up as nice as your boat is looking.
Cheers, mark.
Thank you John, when are you planing on starting you upcoming harbor? I know your modeling skills are up there with the best of them, and I'm sure it will be awesome with your talent.
Sam
Hey thank you Donato, those are the cowls, they are basically air vents used to get fresh air down into the deck house and lower decks. They are more commonly known as ventilators.
Sam
Hi Mark, thank you. This is a fun kit to build, although I had to read through the instruction a few times and keep checking over all the parts, but take your time and I sure you will be just fine with it.
Sam
Good morning all,
I spent most of the day yesterday at the work bench and I finished up my little ferry build. I started a week ago today on this little kit, New year,s eve, and now it's done. That got to be a record for me.
I picked up my scale lumber yesterday so now it's back working on my harbor scene

I have two more areas on the layout to finish before I will get to it. So - who knows a year or so??? I never know how long an area will take until it's done. Retirement means no time pressure - been there done that. I was just out on the West Coast taking some prototype pictures so it's already in the design stage.
I'll be looking forward to that John. Did you get any prototype pictures? If so, can you post them somewhere. They would be interesting.
Sam
Good afternoon all,
Well it rained all day here today and I pretty much stayed at the work bench, working on the third dock and it's almost done. I just stuck it in place to check for fit, and it fits pretty good. so now I'll pull it out again to finish it up back at the work bench. Still needs the outer pilings and the edge boards and of course a lot of detail.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1228.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee460%2FSam_Novello%2F100_0671.jpg&hash=7984e4a6c2796e382804724b34582d3ebb17fbb0) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/Sam_Novello/media/100_0671.jpg.html)
I'll have to look for a kit to bulid, to put on the land form behind this dock.
Have a good one
Sam
Looking really great, Sam!
I've been really enjoying watching your progress on this thread. Just thinking a little on your spot for another kit - perhaps you could take advantage of the two different building platform heights and kit-bash something 'into' the slope? There are plenty of kits to draw inspiration from - many South River Modelworks kits, some Foscale ones and Master Creations Coachworks come to mind. Just an idea - I'm sure whatever you choose to place there will look great.
Cheers, Mark.
Thank you Mark,
I have a few kits in mind, but so far I'm leaning more to Bar Mills Tylic tool Co. The foot print seems to be a good fit, but I'm still looking for more options.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1228.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee460%2FSam_Novello%2F100_0673.jpg&hash=39324f4a6f141fac349b3b4ff8fe53ca1c3c1379) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/Sam_Novello/media/100_0673.jpg.html)
If I go with this one I'll have to change the name to something like; Tylick's Sardine Co. or something to that affect. I'd like to keep Mike Tylick's name on it some how.
Sam
Good morning all,
well I started Tylicks Tool Co. I'm a messy builder so I'll have to see how this comes out before I decide if I'll use it on the dock yet. I'll post a picture of it when done.

I can't wait to get to Springfield. I need so much stuff so I can get going on the new harbor.
Have a great day
Sam
Good morning all
well I finished the Bar Mills kit. I didn't put any signs on it yet because I'm not sure if I will use it on the new harbor yet. I have to find the right signs for it to transform it into a water front stricture. I'm just getting ready to go to Springfield.

Looking at this structure from Bar Mills , I do have to say that a lot of the parts are the same as in the Mooneys I'm building at the moment. Loading docks , doors , chimneys, have to watch out not to place Bar Mills kits too close to each other if you have more then one.
Very nice Sam...I'm looking forward to seeing the harbor scene on the EXPO tour. I really like the coloring & weathering and it's a great kit.
Nice job on the Tylick's structure.
Jeff
Sam,
Wonderful job on the Tylick build. Like John said, the coloring is perfect.
Tom ;D
Nice work, Sam.
Cheers, Mark.
It looks great Sam! You have been busy.
Thanks Jan, Cuse, Jeff, John, and Mark. Thanks for visiting the thread and for your comments. Just got back from Springfield, so I'm a little late getting on today.
John the color is just A&I over plain bare unpainted siding, and then dusted with weathering powders. I was going for a faded green look, but when I got to the point where you see it now I stopped there because my wife told me to, Ha Ha. Just glad I have her around, she just has a good eye for this stuff. I'll get more progress pic's up soon.
Have a great week everyone
Sam

Thanks Tom, I got a new lighthouse at Springfield, so it will be my next build ,. after I make the land form for it.

I'm not going to start the light house build yet because I'll be leaving for Florida this weekend, and I'll never be able to get it done by then. So I'll just do some more scenery in the mean time.
I hope to see most of you at the Expo, and be sure to visit me on the Expo tour.
Have a great day,
Sam
