I am back after some hiatus. Moving isn't fun as well as cabin crew strike. Yes, I got caught in this Lufhansa strike thing and had to extend my vacation by one day. I consider myself lucky. It could have been worse. The strike kept going for a few more days after I got back. I wish someone dug a tunnel under the Atlantic and ran a train. Steam preferably :D
It seems that FOS Red Hook office will have to spend some time on the shelf before I get back to it. I have to give priority to the projects I have promised to build. I have been wanting to do a kit in all box car red for quite some time but haven't had a chance. Therefore I am painting my Duffy's in the exact way George did. I will be attaching everything to a piece of 1/2 inch plywood but won't do scenery. The trestle will go away but I will preserve the coal bins.
I have to mention that I don't follow order of construction set in the instructions. It will bite me in the behind at some point but if I did it would take me way much longer.
Vilius
Hi Vilius,
I think Duffy's is my favorite kit and I remember having a lot of fun building it. I'll be following along for sure! It looks like you're off to a great start. :D
Hey:
You are off to a good start. Love your coloring and weathering. Very nicely done.
Karl
Off to a good start Vilius, don't you just love it when the weather gets all wet and cold and everyone starts building things and share it with us.
Vilius
I will also be following along - the colors look great.
Villius,
I like the colors enough to ask you what they are and how you did them, please.
One of my winter projects is Branchline's Crosby's Coal. It would look great in the color scheme you're using.
Always top notch work Villius.
Nice job on the foundation coloring, and the rot at the bottom of the door. 👍
Nice job! This is my favorite FSM kit. I wish I still had my kit. Maybe one day I will get another.
Frank
Thank you, everyone. This is how I paint the walls.
1. I apply a stain. Supposedly it is Driftwood replacement but I can't confirm since I haven't seen real Driftwood stain in my life. I got it from Sherwood-Williams and its formula is as follows.
Pickled White Base
B1 - 16
W1 - 20
Y3 - 11
Y1 - 2
It comes out a little thick so I dilute it with Mineral Spirits. I don't think exact formula is required. Some grayish stain would do it. It is possible that this step isn't needed but I believe the stain seals wood somewhat and helps in getting the look.
2. I apply A&I wash. I haven't done any comparison but it looks like ink mixes with paint and tones it down a bit.
3. I paint the walls with a craft paint. The craft paint is the key. I apply it with a number 6 bristle brush in semi-drybrush way.
4. I glue on "painted" signs
5. I do nail holes and lift clapboards at this point.
6. If I feel that any of the "painted" signs pop too much I dry brush white oil paint over them.
7. I add bracing.
8. I apply oil wash made of turpenoid and black oil paint with a touch of brown.
If anyone is interested in getting Duffy's it may be the time. I got mine on eBay for a very good price at a time. Now it would be one of the highest...
Vilius
Villius,
Great start and thanks for the tip on the wall coloring.
Tom ;D
Great start to a fabulous kit. Duffy's is my all time favorite FSM kit.
Keep the updates coming.
Jaime
Thank you, Tom and Jaime.
I believe I started building Duffy's around the same time Karl started his Skinner's. He is done and I am only somewhere at mid point...
The scale house is supposed to have corrugated metal roof but I realized that only after I applied tarpaper. Instead of peeling it off I will glue metal on top.
Vilius
Hi vilius:
Very nicely done. Love the colors and the weathering. Can't wait to see more.
Karl
Jan,
It is really looking good.

Jan,
It is really looking good.
Tom ;D
Thank you, Tom.
Jan
Really beautiful build, love the colors.
So much time has past since last post and so little progress I've made... At this pace I will never build all the kits I have accumulated ;D Here is where I am at.

Thank you, Jan.
Vilius
Very Nice! The first FSM kit that I bought years ago.

Beautiful build. Everything looks really nice. Outstanding job painting the detail castings. :D
I loved building this kit. It's my all time favorite.
Looks great. Nice work on the roofs. And the sides. And the details. ;D
Jeff
Vilius,
Looks good dude. By the way, can you please repost the link to your blog?
Thanks!
Alan
Vilius,
Glad to see Lufthansa returned you safely to your new workbench.
Looking forward to watching more of this build , and can't wait for the next update.
Your FSM Duffy's model looks fantastic ! 8) 8) 8)
Tom
Thank you everyone. I spent last night staining the rest of the wood. I don't know if I will get lucky tonight and get any workbench time. I need to pack my Christmas presents for mailing ;D. The truth is that if I mail them before Christmas they get delivered at the end of January. If I mail them at the end of January they still get delivered at the end of January...

Great build.
Duffy's is a real FSM classic. I bet Sellios could have sold thousands of that kit had he made that many.
Jaime
Great job on my favorite FSM kit.
Frank
Hi Vilius:
Very nicely done. Great paint and weathering.
Karl
Thank you Jaime, Frank, and Karl. It is hard for me to single out any particular FSM kit as my favorite. That makes difficult to pick next project. This was easy though. I was asked to build it.
Here are progress photos.
Vilius
What a great kit.
Very well done Villius..... 8)
Thank you Jan, Gregory, and Eric.
This is as far as I go. The scenery isn't part of the deal. It has been most complex kit I have built to date. Nonetheless it was all fun except for the handrails.
Vilius
Looks great Vilius - very well done.
Great looking build.
Very nice. Great job, Vilius.
Jeff
Very nice indeed Vilius .... wish I could be 5% of your talent.
Nicely done, I like especially your corrugated metal roof, very well done.

I appreciate everyone for stopping by and checking out my thread.
Vilius
Very nice build two thumbs up.
Vilius,
Great to see you completed the FSM Duffy's Coal build. Excellent modeling ! 8) 8) 8)

Hi vilius:
All I can saw is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a wonderful job. Love the colors and weathering.
Karl
That looks awesome Vilius!
Hi Vilius:
As I said above WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your colors are exquisite. By the way there's that little office building I put on the Roadside Delights diorama that Bar Mills put out as an office building. I believe it was also used in The FSM kit Barongould's Tannery.
Karl
Jim, Tom, Bobby, and Karl,
I appreciate your comments very much. The office building is very cool by itself. I may build Bar Mills version some day as well.
Vilius
Villius, I like everything about this model. I've built many FSM kits but this one has eluded me. Like many have commented, the finishing is superb. I really like the color of the walls. I believe you said it was a craft paint- do you remember what brand and color?
Thank you, Mike. Luckily the paint was still sitting on my workbench so I had not trouble finding it. I have way too many paint bottles...
It is Delta Ceramcoat Red Iron Oxide 02020.
Vilius
Hi Vilius:
Was nice talking with you at the EXPO.
Karl.
Hi Karl,
It was nice talking to you too.
Vilius
Hi Vilius

Great job! I particularly like the roofing but it's outstanding from top to bottom.
Nice meeting you at the EXPO.
John
Thank you, John. It was nice meeting you as well.
Vilius
Vilius, you've done a superb build on one of my favorite kits. I really like the colors you picked and the weathering techniques. Great job! Good seeing you at the Expo.
Vilius,
This is a wonderful build. I ditto all the other comments! Really fantastic modeling.
Tom ;D
Thank you, Mark and Tom. It was nice to meet you both at the EXPO.
