My daughter got me an American Model Builders pickle car kit for Christmas. I think it's about time to get it built. The kit can be built on either a Athearn or Tichy flat car kit, I opted cfor the Tichy. Here is a picture of the packaging.

and the contents.

It looks like a fun build, I hope you follow along.

First thing to do was to build the flat car, leaving off the brake wheel and ratchet.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fpickle%2520car%2FDSCF1727.jpg&hash=2b7fd9eb4f1b788e562410afe835cece7991969a)
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fpickle%2520car%2FDSCF1728.jpg&hash=d7aff449b72ab3e1ca7603cc18bf4b470e222f43)
then to paint it. I left the center plain so the wood deck would have something to stick to.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fpickle%2520car%2FDSCF1729.jpg&hash=cef624931c36ff8e0a63375d2a4c83062a36fa65)
Now this gets set aside.

The Tichy kit comes with the weight, I think it's steel.
dave
Dave is half right, it comes with the kit but it is die cast, pot metal.

I just found your thread - I will be following along.
Now on to the AMB kit. first thing the instructions say do is to build the four tanks or vats. Here are the parts for the frame.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fpickle%2520car%2FDSCF1730.jpg&hash=d02234e7a8b7a9386e23fceae848d8281a9fc407)
First glue on the six uprights making sure they are square, let dry, then glue on the top.

Andy,
I'll be following along as well. This will make a great looking car. Here is a pickle car from Ambroid, all wood car.
Tom ;D ;D

Great looking kits ill be watching.
Thanks for joining in guy's.
Tom, the cars are similar, mine has a peaked roof and eight hatches.
After the tank frames have been built we add the scribed sheeting. I start by gluing one edge to a frame upright.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fpickle%2520car%2FDSCF1732.jpg&hash=9e619c6de97e6a70f63a27011a10f7b3ec193790)
The white laser cut paper in front will be the tank bands. They are cut from peel and stick heavy paper.
8)
Andy, I am waiting to see how you do the bands around the tanks. I have the Ambroid pickle car and vinegar car which require the bands. I never came up with anything that worked out very well.
So the kits have been unfinished for the last 50 years or so.
Steve I have the vinegar car on the shelf. This kit gives you self stick paper for the bands, it looks like they will work ok.
8)
Well the instructions tell you to glue the edge on like I have done, then wet the board and wrap it around the frame. Sorry it don't work. the part that is glued on just pops off. So I decided to wet down half the wrap and get half of it glued down before continuing.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fpickle%2520car%2FDSCF1733.jpg&hash=1786e5af1b4f758f342a0ba31dffdef15837a073)
seems to be working so far.
8)
What kind of glue did you use to attach the edge? I'd expect yellow carpenters' glue to resist wetting, but maybe not on whatever kind of plywood/laserboard they use for the tanks.
Titebond wood glue. The kind I always use.

I've used that and 'cheapo' yellow carpenter glue, thinned to the consistency of cream. Now I'm using NESL's Flamingo Glue, which doesn't have quite as much initial tack, but dries a bit quicker and is clear when it dries. But glue preferences are an instance of "opinion" - everyone has one, dot-dot-dot....
dave
I think it was more the fault of the area I was gluing to than the glue itself. I was expecting a 1/32 strip of glue to hold. Oh well my other method worked just fine.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fpickle%2520car%2FDSCF1736.jpg&hash=37ae132a272141513584fd29155086e050d9f60e)
The four green colored disks at the bottom of the picture are cut acrylic, painted a speckled green. They sit in the top of the finished tank and if you leave the hatches open it looks like pickles in brine. The tanks are all glued up and washed with some A/I. now starting the self stick bands that I prepainted black.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fpickle%2520car%2FDSCF1737_1.jpg&hash=b712485e5c21a507704f5f666fa8464a26d1b099)

Andy on my tanks I say to wet the outside only. It will expand and form a curve by itself. Then wrap around the frame untill it drys then glue to the frame. For that I us CA for a fast bond. Works great even on the small N scale water tanks.
Thanks for the tip Rich.

I'm enjoying your build Andy. Thanks for sharing. We need all the rolling stock, vehicle, ship, etc. build threads we can get. I love building structures but every now and then it's nice to do something a little bit different. :D
I will have to agree with you on that Bob. That is the main reason I build my layout like I do, a small scene at a time. I can do all it takes to make the scene over and over and not all at once.
Now that the tanks are done the next step is to build the 5 cradles the tanks are nested in. There are three different kinds, one for the middle, two for inbetween, and two for the ends. Here I have them all built, now to get some paint on them.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fpickle%2520car%2FDSCF1738_1.jpg&hash=7f1bf37cc3b58cf7342fe082ff8b4ed08c3edecf)

The cribbing has been painted and the tanks are getting glued in place.

Great thread - I'm wondering what technique you used to get the bands on straight? The self stick part is fine but how do you get them where you want them?
John, I took a compass and held it in a small vice, then set the height and turned the tank to get a line on it. Then I just followed the line around with the banding.

A 'poor man's surface gauge' http://what-when-how.com/metrology/universal-surface-gauge-metrology/
An idea that occurred to me, but I haven't tried, is to construct a sheaf that's the same diameter as the tank (using heavy paper). Then you can use that to align a band by pushing the sheaf to where the band should be, aligning the band to the sheaf, then removing the sheaf as you glue the band in place.
dave
That it is Dave, I have two surface gages but haven't adapted them to hold a pencil.

I have all my tanks in a row and added the roof supports.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Fpickle%2520car%2FDSCF1744_1.jpg&hash=6f2459dbfb04596f0bacac3475f6054993744c87)
then the roof and hatches.

Andy,
This is coming along nicely. I like that you are building the tanks on your surface plate. Great way to keep them perfectly flat and everything square.
Thanks Jerry, I build everything on here.
the ladders are attached and the wood floor is on the flatcar.

Thanks for stopping in Bob, I just installed the roof grabs tonight ,didn't think it was worth a picture. Now to get the decals on the flat car.

Great work Andy, the build is coming along nicely.
Thank you Jim.

Do I smell pickles? :D Nice job on the car.
Jeff
very nice. I like! :)
John
Nice job , it pickles my fancy.
Andy,
Nice job on the pickle car.
Tom ;D
That looks great Andy! Thanks again for sharing the build with us. :D
Thanks to all for following along. I don't know if we needed all the pun's though. No I guess we did.

Andy,
Really nice job on this pickle car build. Liked it so much after finding this thread, had to have 2 Claussen Kosher Dill Pickles with my ham on rye sandwich for supper yesterday. ;) You built a great looking model ! ;)
Tom
Great job Andy.....I'm sure it looks neat running around the layout. 8)
Andy,
The pickle car looks great. Don't know whether I want any pickles though.
