Hi Guys:
Thought maybe I should build these things here instead of kit building. Starting on the gas station today.
Karl
I have this one to build so I will be watching with interest.
Mike :)
Hi Mike:
Where the heck have you been? Haven't seen you for a while.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Here's the first step per the instructions. Coat the walls with Floquil Drift Wood Stain. Yep I actually have a bottle of the stuff. Here's a photo.
Karl
I will follow your effort on this kit. I never see a thread about it.

So this is the "Driftwood Stain" the elders of the forum talk about . ;D I have this one in my stash also, can't wait to see you build it.
Hi Eric:
Thanks appreciate you following along.
Karl
Hi Raymo:
Thanks glad to have you following along.
Karl
Oh boy, this is one of my very favorite kits from George. You know I'll be checking out the thread on a regular basis.
Tom ;D
Karl
Great kit - I will be watching as always.
I'll be here also.

Count me in......
I will be following your good work again Karl.
Karl
Can't wait to see what you do with this one, you do spectacular work !!
I'll be following along too! This one's on my shelf and I hope to get to it someday. ::) It's one of my favorites as well. :D
I'll be watching too Karl. :)

Hi Mike:

Karl
Sorry Karl,
I'm still here but I have just been so busy. The Red Hook Bay show layout has attended 22 train shows in as many months. 4 shows in January alone. Next shows are Eurotrack in Southampton this weekend, then On-TraXs in Utrecht, Holland and then the London Festival of Modelling and so on................ I'm looking forward to meeting Janbouli in Holland!
Also I was voted in as Chairman of my local Railway Modellers club (85 members). Apart from that I am scratch building some British station buildings for a new layout - probably not much interest on this forum.
However I have just received the new kit from Fos - Carter Supply, which I could not resist as my surname is the same!
Keep up the good work and when I come to build FSM 270 I can follow your tips to the letter. ;)
Mike Carter
This one is in my pile as well. As I recall it didn't sell well at the time.
Jeff
I don't have it in my pile. Nonetheless I will be watching as too.
I saw new revision of the Driftwood stain at Michaels the other day. Isn't it what you are using, Karl? I didn't buy it though.
Vilius
Hi Vilius:
That's an original bottle of Floquil. I also have the Roundbell brand.
Guys: Here's a resized Duroil Sign the fits the wall a little better if you want to add it to you kits.

I'm down to my last three bottles of Floquil Driftwood stain. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Tom ;D
Vilius, what was the driftwood stain you saw at Michaels? What section was it in/ type of product?
Bob C.
Hi Tom:
I still have 8+ bottles.
Karl
I still have 31 bottles of Floquil Stains, 7 of which are Driftwood.

Mike Baker ("Nick & Nora Designs") took his wife on a date to go see "Maltese Falcon" at the movie theater last night. This could be a trend, old movies coming back to theaters. (Might say something about the quality of new movies, too.)
Karl, thanks for the oil sign. That's from the PA Oil Country that is part of my model railroad's focus.
dave
Hi Dave:
You are quite welcome. Enjoy the sign.
Karl
Hi All:
Have the main Gas Station building assembled and am working on the roof. here's a photo. I made my red trim a little less dramatic.
Karl
Karl,
Looking good so far.
Tom ;D
i Tom:
Thanks appreciate it.
Karl
Looking good Karl! How many FSM kits do you think you have built? Have you kept track?
Hi John:
Thanks for the compliment. 4 of the older FSM kits sofar. The Ice Platform, Skinners Row, Rollin Saywer And Now Roadside Delights. Plus I've built all the new kits for the past several years.
Karl
Looks great. Has anyone built FSM #9 Bartholow Coal company? Bought it at a recent club train show. Can't decide whether to try and build it or sell it. It would be my first "yellow box". Jim
Because of the quality of George's instructions, it's worth building an FSM kit even if you don't have a good spot for it on your layout, just for the practice.
dave
Hi Jim:
Dave thanks for the excellent comment.
Dave is absolutely right. George has some of the best instructions in the business and you will learn lots of techniques from him. I learned most of what I know from George.
Build that Bartholow Coal Co.
Karl
Thanks for your input guys. My wife also says to build it. I like her attitude! Of course it means she may have some massive quilt project lurking in the background. Thanks again Jim
I'll add a vote for you building it......I would definitely look in on that one, it is a good looking kit and I don't recall seeing a build on it before. 8)
Hi Jim:
Cool. Lets get on it buddy.
Karl
Hi Greg:
Not sure but I think Mike engler built that kit.
Karl
I'm quietly waiting...

That's my recollection as well. I think he shared that on the old forum. Very nicely done too.
By the way Jim. I'll cast a late ballot for you building it as well. As Karl said, George's instructions are some of the best out there. In my opinion they are the best I've ever dealt with but I haven't built kits from all of the manufacturers. Just take your time and enjoy the build. You'll learn a lot and have fun doing it. :D

Jim
I'm not sure that I get a vote - but I would recommend you build a yellow box kit. If you have any questions along the way you sure have lots of experience to draw on here on the forum. And if we get into trouble we will call George. It would be fun to see a build thread tOO.
I agree with the above.

sounds good to me.

Jim,
I have the kit so I'd like to see what you do with yours. Hard to go wrong following George's instructions.
Tom ;D
Well it seems the vote is in and it is a resounding "BUILD ". Not sure when. Jim
HeyJiM;
Ahhh what the start tomorrow. You'll be done sooner than you think.

Hi Guys:
Back to Roadside Delights. Finished the main gas station building and am working on the service bay. Here's a few photos.

Karl, I'm looking forward to seeing some actual modeling updates. I love what you do with George's kits.
Hi Dustin:
I'm working on the gas station. I'm building the service bay at this point.
Karl
Super job on the build Karl, looks great.
Hi Jim:
Thanks appreciate it
Karl
Hi Guys:
got the service bay done. Hope you like it.
Karl
Great stuff here Karl! Thanks for all the pictures.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
Thanks appreciate your comment.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Here's where I am on the gas station. Next is the front canopy. Here's a few progress photos.
Karl
Looks great Karl. Love the roofs!
John
Hi John:
Thanks. Glad you like it.
Karl
Karl, your build is amazing
Jim
Hi Jim:
Thanks. I appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Hi All:
Here's a progress photo.
Karl
Hi All:
Here's a photo of the gas station installed on the base.
Karl
Hi All:
Canopy roof looks crooked in the photo and it was. I ripped it off and am in the process of making a new roof. Should be done sometime tonight.
Karl
Oh, the unforgiving eye of the camera!!!!
dave
Hi Dave:
yep you are right. The camera sees all.
Karl
Karl,
Camera or no camera, it's still looking like a "Karl structure". Great job so far.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
Thanks appreciat your compliment.
Karl.
Hi guys:
Roof is rebuilt and replaced. Island and gas pumps are installed. I painted mine yellow instead of white and red after shell gas pumps.
Karl
Hi All:
Detail casting are done on the left end. The right end is next.
Karl
Karl
Looking good! I'm looking forward to seeing you at the EXPO.
Karl,
Nice! Can't wait until you get to my favorite part of this kit - the diner.
Vilius
Hi John & Vilius:
Thanks for the compliment. Here's a progress photo. The auto ramp and billboard are in on the left side. The billboard is a real 1930's add, Yes she does have a bathing suit top on. I also added the finials from SS Ltd to the top of the billboard.
Here's a few photos.
Karl
Nice color on the concrete! Are you going to weather it further, or keep it looking like it's relatively new?
dave
Hi Dave:
Thanks. It's painted, black A&I & Dry-Brushed with Gray. I'm not going to weather it further.
Karl
Hi Vilius:
You said you couldn't wait to see the diner as it is your favorite part of the kit. Threw this one together for you last night. Just kidding I built this by copying the parts from my kit many years ago. It was on my RR. I will be making some changes to the kit version Mostly the signs. They will be a surprise.
Karl
Been away golfing for a week and Karl puts together another great kit , I don't know what I should wish for , your time amount or your talent , I could do with both.
Karl,
Looks great, thanks for sharing.
Tom ;D
Hi Jan & Tom:
Thanks for the compliments. Here's a photo of the diner on my layout.
Karl
Thank you for the pictures of the diner, Karl. It is such cool thing.
Vilius
Diner and layout look awesome Karl.
Karl,
The garage build looks great. Can't wait until the diner is done as I am getting hungry and need some good food. ;)
Tom
Hi Tom:
Thanks for the compliment. I've decided to use the diner in the photos that I built years ago to save some time as I have 3 other FSM kits to build for my frined Jon. I also have a news stand that I built at the same time as the diner and will be using that also. The Signs have been changed on both Itmes. It will be Bubba's Diner & The Daily Planet News Stand. Photos soon.
Karl
Hi Guys:
here's a few progress shots of Roadside Delights. I used my diner and news stand I build years ago. I changed the signs on both of them and added the Truckers Welcome Sign which was made for a diner I scratch built years ago. Also A Bubba's but different signs. It now resides on Howard Zane's RR. It can be seen under my scratch built buildings.
Here's a few photos.
Karl
Hi All:
Hope you like the diorama sp far. I'm going to add an additional surprise to it soon. Hopefully pics of it soon.
Karl
Karl,
I like it but this annoying little real life thing called work is preventing me from spending much time on the forum.
Vilius
That looks great Karl!
Now I want to pull this one out of the closet and build it. The problem is I have far to many of those "I want to build this one next" type kits in the closet. :D That's where having friends like Tom (ACL1504) and John (Cuse) comes in handy. They sometimes make the "what am I going to build next decision" much easier. ;)

At least you don't have room for skeletons in your closet....... :o
Hi Vilius, Bob & Donato:
Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated as always.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Finished detailing the gas station. All I have left is the open tool shed behind the news stand. Here's a photo.
Karl
Looks good Karl. Are you using chalk for the rust streaks on the roof?
Hi John:
Thanks for the compliment. No the rust streaks are Floquil Polyscale Rust paint.
Karl
Karl,
This is another one of my favorite kits. I can't wait to start mine and it's near the top of the bucket stash for builds.
Thanks for the build and the great photos.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
You are quite wecome.
karl
HI Guys:
here is the surprise I said I would be adding to the kit. I didn't like the large open area behind the diner so I added A Bar Mills yard office and a shack Frank Bernard gave me some years back. I thinks it add a nice touch to the diorama. Frank also made the sign on the roof for me. Hope you like it. I will be adding some details.
Here's a photo.
Karl
That is sweet Karl!
Hi Bobby:
Thanks appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Great as always Karl. I love the roofing and colors on the gas station, especially. I think that little Bar Mills structure is a nice complement. I always admired it's interesting design - nice little structure.
Well done...John
The diorama is shaping up nicely, Karl.
Jeff
Looking good Karl! I like your additions.
Karl,
Beautiful diorama and great structure building.
You are the man.
Tom ;D
Karl,
Great looking scene, typical of your talent.
Jim
Hi cuse:
Thanks for the compliment. Yeah that Bar Mills kit is pretty nice. George used that structure on a few of his kits.
Karl
Hi Jeff:
Thanks appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Hi John S., Tom & Jim:
I put you guy together cause site went to page 8 and was talk a while to load to do replies.
I appreciate your compliments and interest in my build. Thanks for following along.
Karl
Karl,
The Bar Mills office is nice addition to the diorama. Have I mentioned that I love the diner? ;D. Since Bar Mills got the rights to do the office maybe Art could convince George to allow them to make the diner as well. Just a hopeful thought.
Vilius
Hi Vilius:
I'll check with Artie OK.
