Title: East Side Oil Co. by JL Innovative Design
Post by: ak-milw on February 26, 2016, 09:46:19 PM
The next scene coming down the line for the Milwaukee Road is Maracowski's Moble gas and diesel truck  repair. I was going to scratch build this but I found JL Innovation Design's East Side Oil Co. kit that matches my prototype almost perfect. Here is a pic of the kit.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Feast%2520side%2520oil%2FDSCF1740.jpg&hash=ef660245c0d69e9efab78e473c21e66ac94381ff)

and what you get.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Feast%2520side%2520oil%2FDSCF1739_1.jpg&hash=2351a26eb892a04988ba14948e7ca243392c215a)

I will be making a few minor changes to match my prototype

Hang on and here we go!!

I will be starting this project with the diesel repair shop. Here are the parts I am working with.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Feast%2520side%2520oil%2FDSCF1743.jpg&hash=a1fb7f99e4aab5872c3a5a9b6b356ca95509ee13)

I already have the 1/16 sq. strips added to the ends of the walls and I have started the bracing, I am using more than is called for, but that's just me. The only changes being made to this building are the small addition on the side will be moved to the other side. The kit came with card stock for the roof's and has been promptly replaced with basswood sheet.

Lurking is just fine Tom.

I added the brick to the walls using the Micro Mark self stick sheet. I normaly use the Rusty Stumps brick sheet but didn't have enough for this project so I went with what I had.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Feast%2520side%2520oil%2FDSCF1745.jpg&hash=ba26a3088a8f3a76e1b9236eac055af5e95c5e2c)

I then added all the bracing and painted the inside black then assembled.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Feast%2520side%2520oil%2FDSCF1748.jpg&hash=68a4dbe4ecfe721896870c6a010fa62e6f0ab121)

The black rectangle on the side will be a vent that I have to build. Nice thing about this building is plenty of room for signs.

I like the JL kits.  It looks like the kit was supposed to be stucco, what did the instructions say to use for that?  Looks good with the brick, though.

Jeff, The smaller building came with peel and stick stucco but nothing for the larger building. I checked with JL and they said that was it. I am saving the stucco for another time seeing both my buildings need to be brick.

Finished the overhead door and side door. Also finished the large vent which seemed to take forever.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Feast%2520side%2520oil%2FDSCF1750.jpg&hash=0ce1101f95297bebdf2dd6a15710e6af5b57e3f4)

The side addition is also built but needs some paint.

Andy,
I like the flat arch brick above the doors and vent.  Nice touch that really adds a three dimensional look to the building.

I got the roofing done and couldn't wait to add some signs. Also put the addition on, still have to paint the roof.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Feast%2520side%2520oil%2FDSCF1756.jpg&hash=a03be47ebd74c3ba341537e57f32ad8e55998a05)

next to build the frame for the big Mobil sign for the roof and working on roof clutter. The kit comes with some black gravel to put on the roof, still thinking on that one.

Another nice looking model. Do you add any other type of glue to the brickwork material or just go with the peel and stick?
Title: Re: East Side Oil Co. by JL Innovative Design
Post by: ak-milw on March 03, 2016, 08:35:06 PM
Jim, on the large pieces I just stick them on. For the pieces glued on top of the brick I use a little CA glue.

I added the roof caps, chimney and roof access ladder. The big sign frame is just sitting there until it's painted.

I hope to have the completed pictures posted latter tonight.

The diesel truck shop is ready for the layout. I did go with the gravel roof, it turned out ok for my first one.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Feast%2520side%2520oil%2FDSCF1760.jpg&hash=a3682cf14714f481f30003b6b0024584d4b99e14)

before I move on to the gas station building I have a small diesel tank to build. While I am doing that I have to whip up a few pine trees so I can get this building on the layout. Stay tuned more to come!!

Now it's on to the gas station building. Here is what you start with minus the roof. In the back you can see the tank stand painted, the tank is still drying.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Feast%2520side%2520oil%2FDSCF1763.jpg&hash=7f64d7bc4030da77d0d502ec796b7946ae9c9c5a)

If you are looking real good you can see the walls have three doors and there are only two there. The back door is boarded up.

Tom, I will see what I can do. The East Side Oil has been turned into Maracowski's Mobile gas and truck repair, which was a real place. The truck shop has been demolished and the gas station is turned into a office for a roofing company.

I have the bracing done on the station building, Also painted the inside black and assembled.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Feast%2520side%2520oil%2FDSCF1766.jpg&hash=051a7723995e34f1f2101cb071c5fa0195e1c916)

I decided to put a small open shed behind the station so I will put this aside and build and detail that first, then back to this.

Well I have the shed in back of the gas station finished. It can be seen on my Milw. Rd. layout post here http://modelersforum.com/index.php?topic=86.0

And so much for laying out all the pieces and getting familiar with them before you start, I just noticed I didn't get two big windows for the gas station. I don't really want to wait for them to be replaced so I am going to work around it with something else.

Here it is, all finished and ready for the layout. I had some extra Central Valley engine house doors, so I cut them down and used them for the side windows.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi51.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff373%2Fsteammodeler%2FAndy%2520folder%2Feast%2520side%2520oil%2FDSCF1768.jpg&hash=3198c93b4f48f7b4fa23be44ea0d220c9efa7cfc)

I still have to build the gas pump island and the tall sign out front. I also have to paint the clutter details.

The station is on the layout. I have the clutter details painted , the gas island and the tall sign finished. I just have to do a little more ground cover and a few trees then I will get pictures posted on the layout post.
