Title: FSM Mackenzie Milling Co.
Post by: Kimkatkim on June 26, 2016, 09:55:51 PM
Hello fellow modelers! As a rare female modeler, I wanted to share my latest project with everyone here. I have been modeling for most of my adult life. My interests have led me to the enjoyment of structure building and scenery. I don't have room for a layout, so I am putting my efforts into small scenic dioramas until that time when (hopefully) I can build some sort of a layout to place all my work. I love to super-detail everything that I do. I want the overall take-away when someone views my work to be WOW!  ;D  Enjoy and please leave any comments and helpful hints. I am always open for improving technique and learning more about all aspects of structure building.  :) Thanks for everyone's help!  Kimberly

Beautiful work, Kimberly.

I would love to see some close ups of that decapitated concrete work - especially the wall behind the truck.

Cheers, Mark.

Thanks to everyone for your kind remarks!
I will post more pics for sure if everyone would like to see more. In response to Mark, here are some close-up pics of the stone retaining walls taken before some of the scenery was in place. Also, there is a close-up of the fence which I am very happy with. It is amazing to me how much detail pops out when you take a photo like that! I kept a fairly consistent photo record of the build, so I can share any part of this you may want to see. This is a great kit and it's my first COMPLETED FSM kit. I am currently working on the FSM Seafood Emporium which I plan on making into a scene inspired by Doug Foscale's Execution Rocks diorama. It will also include the FSM Pile Driver and a scratch-built lighthouse if all goes according to plan.  ;)  I am going to be attempting my first try on building a sea wall and making realistic ocean water. Any tips, pointers, pointing me to help from the community would really be appreciated. I have read up on several techniques, but ya'll sound like a super helpful group - so sound off! Thanks again!
Kimberly  :)

Beautiful work Kim! I'm very much looking forward to your next one. Emporium Seafood might be my favorite FSM kit and Doug's dioramas (particularly Execution Rocks) are most inspiring to me. Sounds like it'll be a great project.

Wonderful!  Simply wonderful!

Welcome to the forum Kimberly.  I'm certainly looking forward to you Emporium Seafood/Pile Driver/etc. waterfront adventure.  Emporium is on my short list of things to built (but, in all honesty, it's been on my short list for years now  ::) ).

Hi Kimberly:

I will add my WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to your work. Very nicely done.  Recently I've been building FSM kits (My first ones) that belong to a friend for his future layout.

I started building craftsman structure kits back in the mid to late 70's on a bet that I couldn't do it from Another modeler and very good friend. They weren't anything like they are now.

Your colors are very nicely done and your weathering is very well done. Looks like you have dry-brushing down pretty well. Please post more of your work. I'm sure I will learn something new.

Anything I can do to help just let me know OK. And Of-Course welcome to the forum. Keep-Em coming.

Karl

PS:-----Emporium seafood is also one of my favorite FSM Kits. Built one years ago for a friend. I'm also very interested in your scratchbuilt lighthouse. I have several lighthouse kits.

Here is one of my favorite websites and I think you will also enjoy it. Maybe you can find a lighthouse to scratch build here. www.us-lighthouses.com Has all the lighthouse in the us listed by state.

Hi Kimberly:

Just talked to George Sellios. He and I are very good friends. He told me to tell you your model is one of the best jobs he's seen on that kit. Loves your coloring and especially your weathering & scenery. That's a compliment you just can't beat. Good show Girl.

Wow! Karl please thank George for his compliments! He has always been a strong inspiration in technique and striving for realism in every kit I build. I think we can all agree that he is one of the legends of the model railroad community and will go down as one of the most inspirational artists of our time.  Kimberly :)

Nicely done Kimberly! I finally mustered up the courage to open one of those yellow boxes (Hazen Boyd).

Hopefully mine can look as good as your FSM effort!

Thanks for the close ups, Kimberly.

You're right - that fence has come up a treat.  I especially like the plank in two broken pieces - very convincing.  Your concrete retaining wall is outstanding as well.

Looking forward to your next diorama.  Is the base to be round?  Doug has done a tremendous job of leading the eye into the focal points on that diorama.  Check out the way the shape of the land just naturally leads your eye right in there.  One of my favourite dioramas.  I spent ages at the expo in Scranton just standing there watching it go around and around!

You might find Troel's little video very helpful for your water.

Hi Karl!  With the summer vacation time working against me, progress has slowed a bit on the Emporium Seafood project I am currently working on. I am almost finished with the main building complex and am trying to decide which type of shingles to use on the one structure that has shingle siding. I may have to do two versions and see which I like best. Campbell shingles are good, but I wanted to try something that might be more like what you might see in a coastal area - grayed shake shingles seemed like they would fit nicely. I got some Bar Mills to try. I'll try to get some photos together soon to show my progress.
I'm still here, working on it when I can. The heat does not help either! Just broke the century mark in the last couple of days here in Southern Oregon.  8)
Posting pics soon!

Hi Kim,

I used the Bar Mills shingles on my Emporium seafood, I was happy with the results.
http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=46226

I didn't do much to them to weather them, just A&I and some white dry brushing.

I think The Bar Mills shingles Steve used on his kit look great. I'd go with them.

Hi Karl

I did end up using them for siding on the guard building. They look great. I'll probably use them extensively on the lighthouse when I get to it.
I'll get pics posted this weekend of the build so far.
